TSG would knock off a spike for that coupler, and another for that cab shade, cause that's how those guys roll. I think these look great and what I like about the operator version is the holes for the details are already drilled out which is very nice. The level of detail that goes into the Rivet Counter is just amazing, especially at the price.
Thanks James. That pretty much sets the new bar for RTR HO plastic locomotives. Nice job by Shane and crew. LokSound with Full Throttle is the cherry on top. Would like to hear a speaker with a bit more low frequency response, but that's common in HO.
I keep waiting for smoke to come from the exhaust it's so real looking and sounding
Those are super amazing models! Definitely revolutionary to the industry! Can't wait for the Tier IV's!
Man that sounds great. Brings me back to the days of running sd40’s in New England. After listening for a bit I was ready to start my locomotive inspection lol
Don't forget to sign the daily card.LOL
BossSpringsteen69 yeah, and that burned out headlight happened enroute. It worked when I did my inspection 🤣🤣
As always great review James, really love these model, that chessie model was outstanding and loved the horn on it. The NS is a very impressive model. I may order a pair of the NS units, but not quite sure. Im looking forward to seeing many more in the future. Kyle.
Thanks for the review now i know what expect when mine arrives hopefully this week!!
This locomotive looks and sounds good! I'd love one of these, great review!
smooth as too ..The Scale Models SD40-2 is superb Thanks for the as always thorough review JL
finally a diesel review! I absolutely love scale trains and I preordered the et44ah from them!
can't wait to get my x2 BN SD40-2!!!! They look and sound great!
Thanks for the video! Looks like a quality locomotive and thanks to this, I think I'll be picking one up
good to see you introducing detailed close ups
Lovely content! Keep it up!
These sound and look great, I really like the metched etal wiper blades. More details on these than any other version I have ever seen from anyone else. Nobody does the Admiral hood windows except ScaleTrains.
The detail on this locomotive is superb this is unarguably the best to date SD40-2 on the market
thank you,, love the sound of each one.. and the price seems great also...
What an amazing locomotive! I'm going to order the BN SD40-2!
I am impressed for all the details that the locomotives have that the locomotives are not more expensive.
I love that Norfolk southern locomotive
gota love the extended startup sequence on the NS unit :)
Very nice with awesome pricing. I hope there will be a CSX box car logo unit. Great review.
I believe there is, scaletrains modeled the sd40-3 rebuild.
I'll take that Chessie off your hands lol. Love the reviews
great video like always
That capacitor is something else!
yes great vlaue it even has see through dynamic brake intakes
they do go for great deteil,, i hope they keep the prixes done,, that will help the new modelers coming]
u made my day :p
Good job bro !!!!
Nice vid, looks awesome on the first glimps. We have to see how the quality stands up.Sorry ,but had too much crap in the hands over the past 2 years.
I HATE that they don’t seem to be liable to make any more of these in the Chessie scheme 😞
Totally want the NS Rivet Counter!
same here dude, I model NS and CSX so...
i have the same college shirt and a great review.
Good review.
cool video. hey did you ever take bowser bc rail sd40-2 and one of the scale trains sd40-2 and consists together? i wondering if factory speed is same since they both use esu sounds decoders
Man can you imagine if they did modern passenger trains. As a NEC modeler that would be EVERYTHING..... But i am waiting for the GEVO to come out too lol
woooow This is the ultimate SD40-2 model ... Yes something else i have to buy gulp
I picked up an BNSF Operator. Overall it's a really nice model. There are shells that have slightly finer detail, but things like see through DB grids are a plus and the handrails are very straight for plastic out of the box. The paint is crisp and neat although the BNSF orange is a touch red to my eye. That's fair though; I think the orange color Atlas uses on some of it's models is colored too much like a pumpkin. It's certainly good enough for me though. The drives are fantastic so far, right on par with my Atlas/Kato locomotives, and very quiet. I really applaud them for hitting the price point they did with the operator and the level of detail at the price point on the rivet counter version. Hopefully they do a run of operator Santa Fe units; I'd probably come back for one.
akahuddy1 shouldn't the bnsf model have ditch lights? Or were they left out to keep the price down?
gorgious detail
I should be getting mine tomorrow! btw who makes those NAHX hoppers?
Spring Mills Depot.
a review about the king of the road switchers the mighty SD40.
ok now i have seen the whole review 40 -45 cars with ONE locomotive .. impressive ,,,
Show..Um dia terei uma dessas..rssss
Question would be better to buy rivet fully assembled sound or is buying the other with out detail and buying detail pack to add just the same of course both with sound units .. is there any other differences other than having to buy and add detail parts or is there a lot of detail still missing if not buying rivet full assembled . Looking to purchase 3 so wanna make right decision

Where are the southern high hood reviews, I can't find any anywhere
Shouldn't the bnsf version come with ditch lights? Or did they just leave them off to keep the price low?
You can see that the rear coupler is drooping a tad. I wonder is there a way to fix that?
I'm looking at a DCC ready Rivet Counter SD40-2. In the description, it says there's limited functionality of the "beacon on the number board housing." What does that mean?
I noticed that you didn't make any mention of the sand lines piping. It's been an issue discussed in other video reviews for the SD40-2 units. The piping has issues and causes unnecessary clicking. Also most are somewhat bent out of shape and are hard to properly adjust.
nice horn
The red blueprint-like picture in the box is so Fleischmann, I guess they could not come up with a nice packaging design.
how do you uncouple a scale trains locomotive if the couplers do not have magnetic trip pins?
how do the scaletrains sd40-2 compare to the intermountain sd40-2? I am looking for a SD40-2 to go behind my Genesis DDA40X.....lol
I always enjoy your reviews of model railroading equipment. sadly due to drastic space limitations the option that I'm am
starting to seriously explore "N" gauge. Do you have any personal knowledge of any N gauge locomotives and rolling stock? thanks for your time and devotion to the hobby. Greg Long
some knowledge of that N scale stuff...but not a ton. How can I assist?
Would it be so cool if scale trains made a steam locomotive.
Grrrr my hobbies always jump around but I always come back to the same thing. I still want a HO scaled train but dont wanna pay too much for one. If you see this comment, what’s the best place to find these for cheap?
They did all the modern schemes except modern up
I thought folks liked Athearns Genesis engines the most? Is that no longer the case?
Athearn can do nice models in the Genesis but they also have very poor quality control. nowadays other companies have really come along to compete against Genesis
The NS version has the new cab
Hey James when these company's send you their products for you to review, do you get to keep this stuff, or do you send it back once you've done the review?
It depends on the video, I buy stuff, borrow stuff and get stuff. In the case of the NS SD40-2 in this video, that was borrowed and returned.
Do a new and updates layout tour please
3.5 ounces how many container cars wold that equate to
Not telling you how to use your channel, but may you do a video of you running some trains?
the operator looks good for the price..
I met Shane the ScaleTrains president I know him I got to see him at its factory too Benton tn

Where can you buy these? They are all back ordered
the thing that was called an eot holder is actually a rerailer
ArantiusVulpes No, James is correct. It is an EOTD holder.
SouthernPacificPatch I stand corrected I thought for sure they were equipped with them
Is this sd40 better than the intermountains
This make want to consider a move from N scale.
I got Atheran, Kato, and Bachman SD40-2s The Scale Trains version beats them all
The rivet counter is a nice model, got two dressed in ATSF on order, they're almost as good as Genesis in detail and only superior to it in the lighting department. Sounds awesome but I cant compare ESU sound to Soundtraxx - completely different systems both with their own advantages.
SPnoza LA I'd say that Scaltrains' underbody details are way better than Genesis' details. Don't get me wrong, Athearn Genesis have great looking models but these are railroad specific. Something that other companies tend to skip on.
Have you not seen the under frame details on the ES44s or the SD70s?
My chessie system came programmed with k5la.
Bery noice
if you want I'll give you my address and I'll run the chessie unit for you. lol. I can wait for the SD40-3
Do you sale your trains and train car
I just bought my first pair of River Counter locomotives…
What a disappointment!
Great physical detail, but the sound and speed suck.
it needs better speakers
Scale trains is trying to put small hobbies stores out of business no longer giving discounts to retail hobbies stores they may be great models but treat the retailers like shit cancelling already paid orders and selling to dealers higher than what you can buy the models from scale trains direct online store with very poor customer service so if you still want local hobby stores don't buy from scale trains
