I am very new to model railroading & spending lots of time trying to learn. Your video reviews are wonderful tools for a newby like me, even though I don't understand some of the terminology you use, but it gives me stuff to Google! Keep up the good work & thank you for taking the time to do this!!

Now James, this is what I love about your reviews . right down to the nitty gritty. and referance to ford vs chevy. yep that's always out there. but you always saying, " in your opinion " so that's what counts. I was suprised at the pull test. really thought Intermountain would have had that. decoder. scale trains, sounds are better, and like you say, and I agree. capacitor a great perk. a tie for lighting, and movement, both rotating bearing caps. nice.
Such a close battle, lol, but I would have to give the edge to Scale Trains. In my opinion. but over all. BOTH great models and I wouldn't say no to either of them

Honestly I think the intermountain engine looks bigger. I would have to give this to the Scaletrains, the flag on the side of the intermountain bothers me. I do wish the Scaletrains had some things the IM did, but I think overall ST is the way to go. Nice video James

Great video James, I see that its a tough decision to make and to see the difference in the UP colors that both companies produce. Looking at Intermountain color, it seems to have a fresh off the assembly line look, where's as for Scale Trains it has more realistic look. Now I'm a truck driver and I see these Gevos and EMD' s all the time and I really see that Scale Trains nailed as the "I been working on the railroad" look. To me Scale Trains just need a little rust for a good weathered look and it will look awesome on your layout.

Great video James! Love the enthusiasm!! Both fantastic models. The ST yellow I think is more realistic. The Intermountain grey is a touch too dark. Probably the ST detail is crispier. Not sure about the ST grills dimensions but there are several plus points here and there on detail. Ok, decided!! Scale Trains is the one for me. Where did I put my credit card??!!!....

very good review, although you did give the advantage to Scaletrains on the decoder, you could have mentioned the fact that the Intermountain locomotive features a Loksound "select" decoder while the Scaletrains locomotive has the Loksound "4.0" decoder which is a huge advantage. The Selectsound is Loksounds RTR soundset commonly used on factory sound locomotives. The 4.0 is Loksounds (Prototype, Platinum, Genesis, Rivet-counter) line of decoders because you can customize the sound to be a road-number specific soundset. you can make different forward/reverse horns, fouled horns, and custom exhaust. I think that Intermountain also had that little light on the anticlimber Scaletrains didn't

Great video comparison. Couple things I noticed, the UP shield on the front hoods are of different size. Which one is correct? Does it matter? Second, at about 32:00 in your video, I notice a slight corkiness of the handrails behind the cab on the fireman's side. Brass scale handrails would be an awesome improvement on these fine models.
In conclusion, I personally think the IM model is a better looking model overall. MH&HO.

James! I'm new to your channel - this was an EXCELLENT review - and you have a great home layout by the way! @19:07-08 at night, down in the yard/on the ready track it's "kind of noisy with both engines running" = )) This really confirmed what I'd been thinking; [ IMHO - in my humble opinion ] Intermountain and Scale Trains (listed in alphabetical order as you did) are really the top two contenders (no dis to other brands/preferences)...and especially with these Tier 4 GEVO's - both are outstanding! Gotta say; the fidelity of the "start-up" sequence on the Scale Trains model...just awesome...when those turbos spooled up @18:00-18:06 the hairs on my neck stood up!! As a modeler that has scratchbuilt, kitbashed, done fabrications and repairs, including brass...I've learned to expect and deal with misfit details and quirks - just part of the hobby we love.

Competition is good for the market, the quality of these trains is outstanding. The companies continue to create better and better products at reasonable prices. You can even (with Scale Trains) choose to get the less detailed model for less money if you're not into all the detail.

Scaletrains being the rookie in the business seem to be growing a lot in popularity in a very competitive industry. I have several of their Diesel engines now and several dozen of their rolling stock. They definitely have a good concept when designing these locos for production. I have many Intermountain diesels as well and have a hard time picking one over the other. However with that said if I had to pick one it would be Scaletrains. Both companies produce good quality products.

Did anyone notice a wider gap between the top of the front truck and the frame on the Intermountain? I received the Intermountain NS unit and it's just as James described...awesome. But the space mentioned above did seem excessive. When he is comparing the grills on the sides of the units and sliding them back and forth, it will give you a good idea of what I am talking about. James, great video, thanks for doing these. I would ask though, that we get a little more thorough review on sound than just a bell and horn. A lot of time is spent on the visual details in all of your reviews, but sound can have just as much detail that makes for realism. How about air compressor sounds, spitters, pop offs, fans, dynamic brakes. These are the sounds that can make a big difference. All units are going to have a bell and horn. Just a respectful request. Great review as always.

    • @jlwii2000
      @jlwii2000  7 лет назад

Thanks Brian. I go through quite a few sounds on each individual review but doing so on this would make the video over 40 minutes long. I didn't notice the wider gap but I'll take another look.

In my opinion this the best review video you have produced. Both products are great and affordable. It is tough decision on which product is better because they both have great detail. However Scale Trains has better pulling power, sound and paint. Tru color paint is a great product when matching RR colors. I ordered a Scale Trains model but did totally rule out a Intermountain purchase.

Thanks for the comparo. But you didn't review retail pricing. Are they close? That could be the deciding factor.
For vents, I care more about see-through or a sense of depth than correct size. And you never showed the top of the rear venting (radiator intake?).

  • @up9053
    @up9053 7 лет назад

Again, great review James. I am a stickler with details and sometimes I am my worst enemy because of that. Even though I favor the Scale Trains model, I see that they need to work on factory QC. One being the window placement (have the same issue with my Admiral Cab SD40-2) and the other is the red stripe. If you look at the cab side windows you will see ST did not do nearly as good job as IM. There is also a spot near a vent where the stripe goes to far onto the vent frame - (yes I know I am getting picky, but I used to do product reviews for a magazine and this is what I would pay attention to). The roll by of both models at the end of the video is a overall great comparison.
Even with that, I still favor ST over IM.

Great video, I'm happy I found your video review. I honestly say both companies have wonderful models and these two look great, by looking at the units and color difference the Intermountain UP looks like a fresh unit out of the locomotive shop and the paint on the scaletrains UP looks like it's seen rail action with the lighter UP colors. I plan on getting back into model trains so this review is helpful 👌

The reason why manufacturers may appear to struggle to get the nose herald (UP wings) correct, is on some locos there are variences on the actual protoypes. (I'm not sure about the Teir 4s). So for example, I'm interested in getting a UP SD70M, look at photos of UP5222, and 5187, and then 5124 - perhaps some other too. The same loco and period, yet one has the wing tips wrapping arround the nose, another has wing tips that are just short of the edge of the nose, another has wng tips that just meet the edge of the nose. One of Athearn's nose herald for this model matches the protoype, another road number does not.

About UP's color, I noticed that the grills near from front of locomotive are in oxidatiom proces, this is more realistic and can explain the less acentuated yellow.

I have a question about running both these engines together. James or maybe other modelers who own these models.
How do these models run together in the consist?
Both have LokSound decoders (IM Select, ST v4.0) but there might be a difference in gears. What about models speeds? I bought models from ScaleTrains and I want to buy other from IM. Are speeds compatible to run models together in the consist?

Well James, another fine job on your reviews I must say. Although I did notice during the last minute of the run by that the Intermountain has more of a gap b/w the trucks and body than the ScaleTrains has. Intermountain is like the locomotive just came out of the factory, as where Scale trains has a lot of UP experience with the Turbines and the colors.

Holy cow the level of quality has gone way up since I was into trains as a kid twenty plus years ago. At this point it would be a choice based on price between these two.

Definitely like the scale trains model as I have never gotten a loco from inter mountain that ran right . I have had to return each one to the company for repair.

Hey James great video. Not to be picky though but at the end of your video on the run-by I noticed the gears in between the trucks and the body on the intermountain unit.... It totally had me til I noticed that. 😔

In regards to slow motor control, is there anyway to measure the speed of speed step one? I still think the speed step one is too fast, thou constant.

Very tough decision, but as a railroader I can say I think the ScaleTrains sound is much more realistic. I feel the same way though it would be tough to decide

Scaletrains decoder has the bell come on with the horn. I don't like that feature and do you know how to disable that so i can ring the bell seperate from the horn.?

I noticed a few other differences while watching the video. The big difference to me is the size of the nose wings. The IM wings are larger than the ST wings. From looking at photos, the IM appears to be more accurate. Strangely, the nose wings on the Athearn flared radiator SD70Ms look a lot like the nose wings on the ST ET44AC, and I feel that the Athearn SD70M nose wings are undersized as well. I wonder why two different companies making two different locomotives would make the same mistake on the wings?
A less noticeable difference is the size of the yellow sill stripe. The IM stripe is just about the full height of the sill, while the ST leaves a little gray at the top and bottom. ST appears more accurate there.
Finally, I notice that the louvers on the panels below the cab on the right side of the locomotive are different. The IM louvers stop at the panel latches, while the ST louvers extend past the latches all way to the bottom of the panels. I have the video paused at 10:56 and it shows a good comparison between the louvers. From looking at proto photos again, it looks like IM got that detail correct.

I prefer ScaleTrains for Sound, Two different versions (Rivet Counter and Operator) and Realism but both Intermountain and ScaleTrains are awesome models

After running both units, I have to say the weakest link for the Scale Trains version are the ditch lights. They are rather weak, while the Intermountain really has awesome powerful lighting.

Had Tyco when I was a kid, mid 60's. If I remember correctly, and I do, they had sprung suspension. They were pretty much scale as, opposed to what we have today. Yes I could be wrong. But, it was different than what we have today. I have HO scale stock and the detail is lacking today compared to the set I had in the 60's.

Best tip to detail a loco is to paint the grills black. huge difference

Great comparison of the two units. You forgot to show the real chain and spring dampeners on the back left truck on the intermountain vs the plastic molded on scale trains.
In my opinion intermountain has scale trains beat on the detail and lighting aspect of the model. Scale trains has the better decoder and electronics package.
So yes it's a toss up at best. Do you go for electronics or most detail.

I mentioned the truck springs somewhere in there. I go for electronics and smooth operation over detail. I really dislike bad sound and a shuddery drive.

To my kbowledge, for the first time on an Ho model locomotive from a mainstream manufacturer, we have the Great Pleasureto find real grill everywhere there should be, with structures showing behind. That is a giant leap in model detailing. Thank's toScaletrains for it, who after their Museum Quality Big Blow turbine, goes on providing fabulous enginesl to modelrailroaders. JCP

I have to say while I love the tinted windows.... I can fix that. What I can't easily add is the see through grills. Being a big fan growing up of tunnel motors, therefor the see through grills are a game changer for me. Just wish QA with Scale Trains was better.

I've always been a stickler for detail. Intermountain has grab irons on either side of the snowplow, Scaletrains doesn't. Scaletrains has slightly more under body detail, Intermountain doesn't. Now, which model should I choose, the one with the grab irons or the one with the slightly more under body detail? Decisions, decisions, decisions. Sigh.
