Am I looking at a clone or a model. The see through grills, all the handrails, patching, and just small details. Scale trains makes some amazing products. That patching is incredible. Like if you agree.
Though not my most favorite locomotive, the C39 holds a dear memory. My father knew how much I enjoyed trains and often took special trips by the Bluefield yard (at least a 45 minute drive) back in the 80's just so I could see the coal trains. I recall seeing these locomotives quite often. I don't have a layout (maybe in the future), but I've thought about acquiring my favorite locomotives and building a display for the time being. Also, as a side note, Scaletrains seems to do some stellar work; really takes me back to my childhood.
I remember seeing a few of the C39-8 locomotives late in the 1990's that were equipped with ditchlights mounted above the deck. And they used to run long hood forward. ScaleTrains.com is becoming a force to be reckoned with! To bad my era is long beyond past when they were in their prime.
Patched locomotives aren't something you see a lot in model railroading for models that are directly from the manufacturer, glad to see a bit more of that like with ScaleTrains. That's some great patch-paint-job mimicking in the paint work where you can even see the former Conrail logo for the ex-Conrail unit. The sounds aren't bad either. I just wish they had crew figures and a smoke unit in them.
Finally someone has made a scale model of this locomotive. GE called these "classic Dash-8's." They were the first locomotives to utilize digital electronics for the control system. Unfortunately, a lot of intermittent problems appeared. A locomotive presents a very 'noisy' environment for digital electronics. GE ended up redesigning the control system (adding a LOT of noise suppression) and then released the "enhanced Dash-8." My department at GE was tasked with repairing damaged electronic replaceable units. The Classics were never upgraded to Enhanced, so we had to keep repairing the Classic electronics and sending the units back to the field. They caused us a lot of headaches due to the noise issues that would not show themselves in a building without traction motors or other things generating lots of electrical noise. The way to quickly identify Classics is look at the cab roof; if the cab roof is lower than the DB boxes, it is a classic, as shown in this video. Thanks for the review jlwii2000!
I remember this video. You did an awesome job on the product review for the C39-8. I still haven't installed one of the roof grills on my unit. One of them was missing upon arrival of the unit. I had to order one from Scaletrains.
The blue patched unit was VERY impressive. Not because it was patched but that they went the extra mile to show the painted over conrail barely visible. Very very cool. Very nice locomotives. I'm a big fan of the Loksound decoders.. Also. did you just start putting those additional notations with historical info on them in your reviews? I like that very much as well. I always enjoy little pieces of potted history. I didn't know that the Dash 8's were fairly unreliable.
great video, and I hope that if you are on the east coast then stay safe and dry along with anyone else who lives on the east coast and will be affected by hurricane florence
Nice review. I have a Rivet Counter and an Operator and am very impressed and look to be the best quality I've seen so far. However the Operator has issues with derailing the first car behind on an 18" radius. Even with Changing out the coupler to a Kadee, It twists it off. Any reviewing of how they relate with the rolling stock would be a benefit.
Hi, amazing, but the Black locomotive when you put the encoder is no sound? onlly is moved and the lights? the ditch lights work? Can show the number part? Thanks so much
8211 does not run anymore with Pennsylvania Northeastern and is from what I heard a parts locomotive for 8212. PNE also recnelty aquired more locomotives 2 years ago.
Already have mine I have the one that says Conrail quality on it. glad to see you picked up on the North Fork Southern they did that off the long Hood I hope I said that right. keep doing your reviews love them like I said before you save me time and money until your next video be safe and be good
Nice looking locos and great pricing. Did notice, atleast to my eyes, the 8212 unit seems to have a couple radiator grills out of place and the cab has a small gap at the bottom. But thats just me being nitpicky. Good reviews
8212 is based in my home town. Unfortunatly Engine 8211 suffered irreversible engine failure, so they had to scrap her. Parts from 8211 are being used to repair 8212. For god sake why won't they just put her in a muesum Already!
Got 2...gonna repaint them to Peru's FCCA were most of them went....I have 1 railpower C32-8 I have been working on to go onto a atlas chassis to repaint Brasil Ferrovias.
DOSE SCALE TRAINS HAVE 4 AXLE'S IN N SCALE BECAUSE I CAN'T RUN 6 AXLE'S ON THE HELEX , THE RADUS IS TO TIGHT ITS ABOUT 17, 18. I CHECK THERE WEB SITE AND DIDN'T SEE ANY. TKS THEY DO SOUND GOOD
The Pennsylvania Northeastern has retired the #8211/8212. The C39-8 era on that road is over. Mechanical issues have ceased their service. They have been replaced by two SD60's, one of CR and CSX heritage.
8212 is still there today it’s currently in new Hope getting wheel replacements last couple times I checked at the yard it was still there until it was getting repaired 8211 was retired due to a turbo failure so 8212 is still alive and running
HI I really like your videos they are what I use to determine weather or not to buy locomotives was wondering if you did shout outs and if you could do one for my Brandon Railway chanel I could really use the help as I am also doing review videos thanks so much for the help

Lol

The ex-Conrail 8212 actually runs right through my town. Or I can drive 10 mins and see it with some ex CSX locos too
I’m glad I’m not only one that sees them. We also got 5342 and 5315

Who else is a fan of Conrail?
Thanks for showing these! Very nice units!
What type of dcc control system do you use?
Got 2...gonna repaint them to Peru's FCCA were most of them went....I have 1 railpower C32-8 I have been working on to go onto a atlas chassis to repaint Brasil Ferrovias.
James, do the DCC ready units come with speakers preinstalled or just the housings?
I don't think the speakers are included, but I was wondering that too. Cheers, Dan

James the Conrail logo is know as the “can opener”. Scale trains needs to make the Conrail in the Gray work train scheme as well
That was the C32-8. None of the C39-8's received the gray scheme.
Would you consider selling the 8212?
where do you get your auto racks?
Nice looking engines great review!

Impressive Locos! Just waiting for them to do dash9's now...
I'm waiting to see if one of these companies will make the SW1001.
No bell? That's the best part! Ding! Ding! Ding!
can we add sound to these as well??
Make the blue one a Conrail 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻❤️
the NP trains run near me irl that's pretty cool
Next up should be the SP and DRGW SD40T2 units Scaletrains will be coming out with soon.
Could someone tell me the acustic pressure of this model (real version size)
Does the DC version mu with an athearn genesis loco?
Any two DCC engines can be MU'ed together, but those with different decoders will likely need to be speed-matched.
Nice trains bit i likes a Europe bombardier
cool, so ugly makes them so cool much like a GP30 and Alco-630
nice locos, with some REALLY nice touches. pity about the overcomplicated Loksound system.
barry noble Yes, how dare they make the decoder function more like the prototype. Such a shame.
There is red dpu lights on this loco
Pumpkins
