The persona theming has been really strong the last few games. Persona 3 is about accepting death and the fact that youre mortal (which is why they need to shoot themselfs to use their personas), persona 4 is all about accepting yourself and your flaws , and persona 5 is about standing up against the world, not just letting things happen and taking fate into your own hands. Great series, really strong messages

The theming is strong but I liked that persona 3 was very mature but persona 4 was very anime-ish. It took some time to get invested in it as much as I was in persona 3 because the story in 4 felt a lot more simple. However, when it comes to game mechanics, persona 4 wins. If there was a persona game that had storytelling like 3 and game mechanics like 4 or 5?(Haven't played it yet) I would buy two copies just to support it.

Persona 2 is actually a duology - two games that are interconnected to one another, with the second game featuring a different main character from the first (although the first game's protag also is still a major focus.)
Persona 2: Innocent Sin is the first title - it stars Tatsuya (the male character featured most prominently in the first two P2 openings).
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is the second title and it stars Maya (the girl with the heart symbols on the chest of her outfit.)
Persona 2 also has a weird localization/release issue in the US. Originally only Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was released in the US for PS1 (despite it being the second game in the Duology). However, when the PSP remakes came out, Atlus did localize and release Persona 2: Innocent Sin in the US. That said, the PSP re-release for Eternal Punishment *was not* localized for release. Meaning if you want to play both games legally in the US, you have to play the Innocent Sin PSP release and then find and play the PS1 version of Eternal Punishment.
That said - Persona 1 and the Persona 2 duology are a highly *highly* underrated part of the Persona series by fans who got into the series with Persona 3 onward. I wish Atlus would do remakes of them so new fans could experience them. They definitely are different from the aesthetics of P3, P4, and P5 - but they really do deserve more love.

The story actually matters! I can only speak for the recent persona games, but I imagine the same for the earlier ones. It's a running joke in the community that Persona 3, 4, 5 are the only ones Atlus (the video game developer) care about.
The story matters. For 3, 4, 5, there's a general theme that ties the entire narrative. I also think that 3, 4, 5 are the ones that have the modern game loop. Basically, the game loop is divided in two parts: dungeon raid game and social interaction game. In the limited time of usually a year in game, you have to divide your limited days into either going into dungeons or hanging around with your friends. Making social bonds and hanging out with friends level up your "stats" so you can do better in dungeons.
It's an rpg. So imagine Pokemon, but with story that matters, with different meanigful themes per generation of games, and instead of stagnating, it grew with the times and evolved the jrpg formula. With the added plus of quality music and visuals all throughout the game.

    • @Kirgoss
      @Kirgoss 3 года назад +13

Well Persona 1 and 2 were effectively completely different games, the only connection is the name on the box... Well besides them all being jrpg.
Since Persona also only got big from 3 on, it makes sense to ignore the first two. It honestly makes sense to just see them as their own franchise, even if they are technically the first Persona games.
Also, Persona 3, 4 and 5 are all in the same universe. Different time, different place, different characters, but still same world. Persona 1 and 2 are completely disconnect in that regard as well.

Each Persona game has a different way of summoning your persona. As I have not played them I'm not completely sure, but I think in Persona 1 and 2s one can summon their persona by just thinking about it, without the help of any kinds of tools.
In Persona 3, it is done by using an Evoker. There are technically many types of Evokers, but the one used the most recembles a gun and you have to pretty much mimic commiting a suicide with it to summon ones persona.
In Persona 4, which is coincidentally known as the most lighthearted of the series, you just have to crush a tarot card that you can manifest before you. While the summoning is all fun, easy and not traumatizing, obtaining a persona in the first place is a different, not so fun and easy story.
In Persona 5 a persona is summoned by ripping off a mask, rather violently might I say, at least when first obtaining it.
The way of persona summoning is actually usually related to the overall theme of the game. Persona 3 is about accepting ones mortality and death, so suicide imagery is disturbingly fitting.
Persona 4 is about chasing and accepting a hard truth over an easy lie, also about accepting the truth about ones true self. How tarot cards relate to this is a bit questionable, but they are one of the main motifs of the series, so here they are probably used more because of that rather than them fitting the theme.
Persona 5 is about ones personal freedom and about the masks people show to the world, hiding who they really are and suppressing their true selves, both in good and bad.

Since you guys are so confused, I’m gonna explain some of the summarized version of the plot
*Revelations: Persona* Set in the town of Mikage-cho, it follows a group of high-school students from St. Hermelin High, who are forced to confront an outbreak of demons in their hometown.
*Persona 2: Innocent Sin* Set in the coastal city of Sumaru, the story follows Tatsuya Suou, a student of Seven Sisters High, as he confronts phenomena generated by reality-altering rumors.
*Persona 2: Eternal Punishment* Set shortly after the ending of Innocent Sin, the story follows Maya Amano, a supporting character from the previous game, as she confronts a similar rumor-created threat along with Tatsuya.
*Persona 3* The story takes place in the town of Iwatodai, following a group of students known as S.E.E.S., who fight monsters that appear during a time known as the Dark Hour.
*Persona 4* The story takes place in the rural town of Inaba, where a group of students investigate a series of killings related to a realm known as the Midnight Channel.
*Persona 5* The story is set in Tokyo and follows a group of students as they adopt disguises of thieves to tackle the city’s corruption and attain freedom from imposed societal pressures.
I tried to summarize it as much as possible, because the stories of each Persona game are so confusing, so deep, so difficult to understand that it would take me HOURS to explain the simplest game of the series to you. So yeah, answering your question, the story does matter in these games. It matters A LOT.
Also one more thing I’m gonna say: the thing about the guns is that in Persona 3, the characters are able to draw out their hidden power by facing their own deaths. The guns they use (called Evokers) are a way to force that. It doesn’t cause physical damage to the human body, but it causes enough emotional stress to allow them to summon their Personas.

Persona 3 (best game) revolved heavily on the quote "Memento Mori" which is a Latin phrase that means “remember that you will die”. or just "Death" in general and was very controversial when it was release with some claiming it was promoting suicide becuz idiots saw the characters shooting themselves in the head with "guns" which was actually the complete opposite of what the game actually portrays, it teaches to live life and treasure the ppl around you cuz u never know when somebody might die.
Persona 3 Fes was a special edition of the game with more added feature including an extra 30+ hr post game storyline.
Persona 3 Portable was wat some ppl claim to be an "inferior" version of the main game, but was the only Persona game to feature an alternate playable Female main character storyline.
Persona 4 felt more like an "apology" for wat Persona 3 did, as it was set in a more happier vibrant tone despite the game revolving around trying to catch an unknown serial killer.
Persona 4 Arena games were fighting games witha heavy storyline connecting both 3 & 4 canonically.
Persona Q 1 & 2 Despite being a crossover between the 3,4, and 5 game's casts using time travel, the story of Persona Q is considered canon to the Persona timeline as confirmed by a Atlus USA representative, but when asked how the games are canon, all they said was "Thats a spoiler". Article here: www.siliconera.com/persona-q-shadow-labyrinths-story-canon/
Persona 5 is a "rise against the machine," "fight the power" ,"viva la revoluticion" type of story that portrays and tackles actual real life issues/events.
all of the game are great.

each persona also had their own "psychological theme".
Persona 3 is about your readiness and acceptance to death. The character need to show readiness to face death, thus the "head shot" is the trigger to summon the persona.
Persona 4 is about accepting yourself, especially the part of you that you didn't want or didn't like. Thus the sequence of taking in the persona into one self before summoning them from within yourself.
Persona 5 is about how you express your true self toward other people without putting on a mask. Thus the mask ripping (literally) to summon persona.
    ...
and Persona 3 is the most famous/highly rated among the series, that's why it got the most animation series and spin-offs.

  • @pezdispencer113
    @pezdispencer113 3 года назад +5

Every game basically has re-releases with the exception of Persona 2. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are separate games, one set after the other. P2 is a duology, whereas P3FES is a rerelease with an expansion pack for P3, P3P is a remake on the PSP (with a number of gameplay changes due to hardware limitations). P4G and P5R are the same as P3FES, rereleases with additional content.
The butterfly is the physical manifestation of Philemon, who is basically like the good deity of this universe. He is the one that gives the P1 crew their power and he created Igor. Igor is a recurring mentor character that helps guide each of the protagonists of the games and helps them fuse their personas. You called Igor the penguin in your Anime openings video, the short hunchback man with the long nose.
People do not turn into Personas in these games, however Digital Devil Saga (which is another SMT spinoff) the characters do actually turn into demons. Personas are like the manifestation of a part of their psyche, they are part of the characters but are also physically separate at the same time.
Persona 3 has four movies, which together cover the full plot of the game. These movies are actually quite good, but they are better experienced after playing the game since some context is slightly removed and some elements are changed/order of events are slightly jumbled. I'm pretty sure you can watch them without the game (can only properly confirm for the first one, 'Spring of Rebirth') its just that the game enriches the experience. I highly recommend them.
The suicide imagery of P3 is very intentional. Each of the modern era games have a theme, Persona 5's is Rebellion and fighting corruption. Persona 4's is the hard truth vs the easy/convenient lie. Persona 3's theme is Death, coming to terms with your own mortality and dealing with the aftermath of it. Each of the P3 characters are affected by death in some way, the protagonist (blue hair guy on the train) for example lost both of his parents in a fatal car crash 10 years prior to the game so he's become very emotionally stinted and disconnected as a result, not even caring about his own safety. He's basically dead on the inside and very apathetic of everything happening around him.
The story is EXTREMELY important. People play these games primarily for the story and the characters, the gameplay is fun but its not really the main selling point. Persona games often run 80-100+ hours for a single playthrough.
You joke about the girl in blue with the book (Elizabeth), but she is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than everyone in that room, with the only possible exceptions being the P3 and P4 protagonists (though likely only P3 Protag since he's canonically the strongest Persona user out of P3-P5).
There's a big tone difference between each games. P3 is a very dark and serious game, whereas P4 is much more light hearted and chill. P5 is somewhere between the two. The 'suicide element' is from P3, whereas the upbeat stuff you're seeing is from P4.
The Skirt pattern design is part of their uniform. Yasogami High School's uniform is the plaid skirt with a white top. Again the P5 school uniform Shujin Academy has plaid pants.
The reason P5D is remniscent of P3D and is a (animation wise) better opening than P4D is because P4D was actually the first dancing game to come out. After it was successful they worked on and released P3D and P5D at the same time.
There was a switch up, but its earlier than you think. P1 and P2 duology were done by a different game director and were much closer to typical JRPGs. P3 was a reboot of the franchise which added many new elements that are considered standard for a Persona game nowadays, the most notable of which was the idea of the Calendar Year mechanic. P4 and P5 still use this mechanic and have built on what P3 established, whereas P1 and P2 are very different games (and are largely ignored by Atlus themselves).

Each main game has a specific theme and even different ways they summon their Personas (which yeah, are more like Stands from Jojo, not transformations)
Persona 3 was the one with the shooting themselves lol. That is often considered the darkest of the series, the whole theme is centered around death with its motto "Memento Mori" roughly translating "Remember you are mortal". But about that...they arent shooting themselves lol. Those arent even guns. Those are called Evokers, and they are in the shape of a gun, and you point it as if to shoot yourself to kinda trigger your fight or flight response to summon your Persona in that game.
And yeah, there are 3 Rhythm games for the series, with music this good why not? Lol. The first was the P4 one, which was actually a sequel with it's own story. Then years later they made P3 and P5 dancing at the same time, these with little to no story, mostly just fun character interactions, but still fun rhythm gameplay!
The Q games were spinoffs that not only brought the cast's of P3, P4 and P5 together in one game, but crossed over with another series. It had the characters, music and themes of Persona, but it used the gameplay style of the Etrian Odyssey series, which focuses on 1st person dungeon crawling with the turn based battles.
P3 was a swap for the series and started "Modern" Persona. P1 and both P2 games were more normal JRPGs, while P3 onward mixed the RPG with social simulator, which increasing your bonds with people would give you advantages in battle later.

The reason you're seeing multiple years is because the games were either remade or rereleased in future dates on different systems. They were given newer openings for the rereleases to either reflect changes made in the games or to better present the tone and story to a newer audience, especially since it was now sometimes a different decade it was released in. Also persona were never transformations, they always have been a separate entity that the characters summon.

Every persona game has diifferent themes, style, plot, setting, characters and message. None are connected as they all take place usually like 3 years apart from each other.
P3 is the only one with the guns, its how they summon and it is themed around death and memento mori and is probably the darkest one.
P4 is the most light hearted one as if they were trying to balance it or something. And it is themed around being true to yourself. They break cards to summon them.
P5 is all about freedom and rebellion. They use their masks to summon them. It is the most mainstream one and is how most people get into the series. (Although
I enjoyed P4 Golden just a tad more as its the one that I recommend playing, but P5 Royal is the easiest to get into)
Persona are pretty much just stands. They don't transform they all just have different methods of summoning them with each game.

Specifically in Persona 3 the characters shoot themselves with a special gun-shaped Evoker to summon their persona.
    It's not an actual gun.

Also, Persona 3 FES was an enhanced re-release of the game with extra content, while Persona 3 Portable was a PSP... sort-of remake that along with other stuff added a female protagonist you can play as.
If you noticed the duality of the P3P opening, it was made that way so you can flip the PSP over to see it from the other protagonist's side.

You missed the persona 5 scramble opening (renamed to strikers for release in the west for spring 2021).
In Persona 3 they summon their personas by using their “evokers” which look like guns (they don’t shoot bullets). In persona 4, when summoning their persona is shown they just use a card. In Persona 5 they remove their masks to summon their personas.

Persona 4 dancing all night. Is lowkey my favorite spin off because of its story and I was kinda sad when they didn’t make a story mode for dancing in moonlight and dancing in starlight. But I did like the. Added social aspect of the more recent dance games

Also the Gun stuff in Persona 3 is how they summon their Persona3. The gun and shooting yourself, that only Persona 3, each Persona group have a different way to summon their persona, P3 is shooting themself, P4 is crushing tarot card, P5 is ripping of mask

Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight is a rythm game. Currently playing it and it's very fun.
There are a total of 3 Persona rythm games, based on P3, 4 and 5. You can get them bundled as Persona Endless Night Collection.

The story is the most important part of the games. I feel although P3 seems edgy with the evokers (guns) it ties into the message of the game that you are mortal and only have so much time
