It can be hard to get out of the hood but you can do it. It has to be something you want. I’m from East Baltimore, spent half of my life in and out of jail, and came home from prison 13 years ago after doing 8 years. I told myself that I don’t want this life anymore, so I found a job that pays decent and have been there 12 years now. It can be done but a person’s mentality is what holds them back.

I'm 52 years old, born in raised in NYC. first, I want to say is that when a person or family transition to a better place, it's best to continue to move forward, it's ok to stop by once in a while to visit family and good friends but be very aware that many (snakes) don't appreciate you coming around showing your face because they think you are better than them (envy). I've seen and heard time and time again that so and so was killed by so and so, when the truth comes out why, it all balls down over envy. Many will compare your blessings to their downfall, so please be mindful and keep your head on a swivel if you decide to go back to the hood and show your face. Many may confuse your smile on your face is because you are happy to see others as to smiling because you are better than.

Psychologists call this cognitive dissonance. You listen to the words in their songs and it seems these people worship everything but God. I don't blame 'em though. We live in a fallen world. But the good news is that we now have a choice as to who we're gonna serve. Make a choice and stick to it. Quit flip floppin. Jesus is the way and I pray more people find Him.
This lifestyle just doesn't compute. They work to get outta the slums, but then they go back there to "remember where they came from". And the worst bit is that they brag about the slums in their lyrics. Imho, this person driving around in the Lincoln is nothing more than a sell out. Unless he's back to preach God's word, he ain't doing no good for his people.
They all kept saying that you can't walk through their hood unless you're from their hood as if it was a threat. I understand that people are territorial and need their space, but if you come in peace, why the threats? Maybe it's to deter those with malicious intent? My dog acts this way around strangers because I never trained "the pack" instinct outta her. I did that for a reason. I, too, live in something of a hood. But even dogs can be trained to act right. Anyway, I'll get off my friggin' soap box now and let y'all be. God bless!

Wages have gone up which is good but not enough to catch up with the housing costs. If so think again, Most of them do what they do just to survive the circumstances they were born into, I think you couldn't be more wrong. Do you think it's easy for them to get a job? Housing projects were made to help men coming home from the military to help them get back on their feet. The problem is that it was always supposed to be a temporary solution, just like welfare. It's like an ok paying job where you make just enough to be scared to leave even though you might get a great paying job. Projects and welfare were made for good reasons, but they've made people scared to try. You make too much money they take your food stamps or kick you out of your project, and that's scary so people don't even try.

Never thought I would stumble across a video showcasing the hood I lived in. I lived in James Cayce on South 7 for the first year or so of my schooling. Hearing shootouts was common and we would just stay away from the windows and continue watching cartoons while people were shooting. Adults would flash their guns and smile and even had the courtesy of telling us to go inside before the shooting started. Then we'd go outside to collect bullet casings for fun. This was about 26 years ago, but it doesn't look like things have changed much if at at all.

Chirs I've been following your travels. What I noticed is a certain humbleness and a sense of reality among the people in those countries. It seems like no matter how bad the situation is, they seem to make the best of it. I also noticed that a lot of them have no choice, no ladders to climb, and no way out. Now I look at this and I realized that these people take advantage of nothing!! only each other. All I see are designer clothes, boasting, and complaining at the same time about how bad things are but yet flashing cash and talking about getting all this money. It seems like they enjoy this shit. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 90s with 2000 plus murders a year as much as I liked being in the streets I wanted to get the hell outta there. All it takes is ambition, motivation, and a will to want something better. They don't realize the Big Mama soul food is proving it. What a waste of being in country where u can be anything u want to be. I felt like throwing up when I saw homie letting his kid play dice. Dam!!

I use to deliver for Amazon in this area, I will say these are some of the nicest people i met delivering. Especially versus the "nicer" neighborhoods. I have no doubt the life is hard for them, and there is crime. But there are people that have good hearts that live there. I remeber one time a customer was having a huge cook out for the community and they invited me to sit down and have lunch with them and it was so much fun. There are a couple communities in nashville like this but this was my favorite ❤

it is. There is much much work in Nashville. We even have a college program that allows you to go to school for two years FREE at most state universities. Opportunity is there. You just gotta want it and of course you will have to sacrifice so instead of buy J's with your check. Put it up and save to move to an apt. Cost of living here is high but it can be done. Its done all the time.

It's good that you are showing where you grow up. I also am a nashvillian, lived in Preston Taylor for over 15 years. Single mother work 2 jobs to get my children out of these projects. But the way you are raising your son is a bad omen.
Show some positivity. Creativity that your child is doing not walking around in a big chain with a pocket. Full of money that he really don't even know.
The value of this is not the life that we all black people need to show the world. I'm not criticizing you. I'm just saying I'm a 69-year-old woman. And I feel like this is not something that you should be showing.
What example does this protroy for your black community? You made it out, but the rest of 'Em seem like they're comfortable where they're at and this nothing to be proud of to. Day 2024. Those projects have been tore down. And I'm just now seeing this. And it actually sadden my heart to see this child. Probably 8 or 9 years old acti g like a gangster 😢 this only my opinion 🤔

Hi Chris, my sister-in-law raised her kids in Regent Park. They both are millionaires today. Just because someone grows up in a project doesn't mean anything. It is all in how you are raised with moral values. Take pride in what you do have, take care of it, go to school, go to college or university and work hard.
I grew up very poor in Manitoba, we didn't have much but we had parents who loved us enough to teach us right from wrong. Life wasn't easy and we were never hungry. We went to school daily.
We learned to work at a very young age. We are all living a good life and I will also tell you we grew up with racism because we are Metis. We never walked around with guns and bullied others. We had neighbors where the kids were always in trouble, steeling and even caused a big fire one day. They stole the matches from our home when we were away. They crawled in the window. Communication with parents and the kids are key.
