  • Dead Silence has been nerfed fairly significantly in Modern Warfare II compared to the previous MW title in 2019. Today, I wanted to compare the two versions of this field upgrade and share my thoughts on the current state of Dead Silence. What do you think of the current state of Dead Silence in MWII?

    I think that's not enough.
    I think, whenever someone activates Dead Silence, an alarm should go off in the lobby, with flashing lights, sirens and an announcer telling everyone that Dead Silence has been activated.

      @@toadalthug4055 Staged reloads and over nerfing sliding did that too. I can live without slide canceling but not being able to immediately transition into aiming for a quick corner peak or firing while sliding really kills that mobility that made MW19 so much fun. Even if that game was drug down by MANY annoying flaws, its movement was super smoothy which really brought me back after a good 8 years.

      @@lrsb1678 Sure but if you're flanking an entire team, they're ALL going to come looking for you at the same time because of the noise lol. The vast majority of the time when you're flanking, you're flanking multiple people, not just one player.

      The fact that they think red dots on a minimap is punishing players for shooting their weapon is so bullshit. Theres a counter: suppresors.

      I find it interesting that people are simultaneously complaining about having to rely on sound to find people now and that sounds are too loud and easy to find people with.
      Especially when the same people who want mini map dots are complaining about not instantly having ghost to stay off the minimap.
      These changes are making it so you can use different perks and don't have to use a suppressor. If they did what everyone wanted then most people will just be running ghost, ninja, and a suppressor at all times.
      You can still easily flank with the new footstep audio, just don't constantly sprint all the time. Sometimes you need to move slower to sneak up on people, shocking, I know.

      @@OmairArif it’s not finding anyone though, it’s sitting there in a corner and waiting to hear a step and being able to hear their every move, red dots give away a vague idea and dont stick to players, footsteps are constant giveaways

    I might be hallucinating but I swear you can hear people with Tac Sprint even when they're using Dead Silence. So on top of all the nerfs they have applied to Dead Silence, it's now not even dead silent.

      You can still rush, they just slowed the overall pace of the game down. So yeah, you can't just jump/slide cancel around a corner, but you can aggressively peek in other ways.
      If you're on PC this feels like an amazing mix between COD and the Insurgency series

      It's because before movement playstyles were the ONLY meta playstyles. And have been for a long time for most situations in basically EVERY Call of Duty for years. So saying that and backing it up by trying to make other playstyles relevant is actually not a bad thing. And yes they had to nerf movement playstyles to make it happen.
      Because it's obvious that they'll never figure it out by simply making maps more suited to other playstyles or anything. Or nerfing every short-range gun in the game. lol. So I guess just nerf the movement itself. lol. But yes I think they are technically trying to back up what they said. For the most part.
      It's just making most vocal players mad because the players that are generally vocal about these games are always the ones abusing the movement playstyle meta that usually exist.

    I wish more people talked about the lacking name plates. I've died countless times because friendlies far on the map have their dots over the enemies head. It's horrible. It's also just 100x harder to spot and keep your aim on enemies that are behind covet and mostly not visible esp against shadows and with how they don't even have HDR settings

      That is honestly my biggest gripe with the game. The amount of times I've fucking died to some shitter literally proning in a patch of grass or some rocks with a shotgun/sniper I couldn't see when I was looking right where he was and got blasted is mind boggling.

      It’s all a plan to keep good players from rushing. This game TTK is so fast, you can’t second guess anything. I’ve died so many times rushing and second guessing someone who is just aiming down

    Marksman mentioned that you can actually still hear footsteps if you’re tactical sprinting with the dead silence field upgrade

      Yup! I waited for the animation to complete, activated it decently far from the enemy, and I was STILL sound whored. I'm flat out not buying until they make some kinda compromise...WZ2 is gonna be free anyway so f*** it!

    I think dead silence activates because when you click the button the character phone homes to Activision and Activison gives him the green light to get quiet footsteps.

    For those who don't think that 2 seconds animation is a big thing: just remember how many times you died to an enemy who also got killed miliseconds after he killed you

      The number of times I activated Dead Silence in MW2019 and died within the period whereby I instantly got it back was rediculous. 2 second window and I'll never get it active.
      Also what's with the box, surely if they're going for realism I should pull over to a bench on the side of the map and take my shoes off, then put some rubber soul shoes on. Solid 30 seconds work at least there.

      @@Scroolewse a lot of good players use these on Objectives, so Infinity Ward want to nerf them too. Basically, playstyles that are popular with good players have been nerfed into the ground.

    My biggest gripe is making so many noises in third person that I don't make in first person. It gives a false sense of security in my stealthiness when in reality the enemy thinks I'm moving a box of china

      The worst thing about that is that you don't even need to sprint as even walking makes an insanely loud noise (as I've seen on way too many killcams)

    How they are handling this makes perfect sense when you consider that they are looking to get rid of the rushing play style completely. I’ll be canceling my preorder until we determine what the final game is like.

      I played the early beta and I didn't preorder. I actually paid the $5 for the early beta code for this exact reason. Maybe it should be posted on Reddit that all players should cancel their preorder until fair a balanced changes are made. It's just ridiculous how far they've gone to stop the run and gun play style.

    I also heard that radio sound a lot. I thought that it was a portable device or something. It's absolutely unbelievable that that's the sound when activating dead silence. They literally hate players like us.

    The alarm sound when you activate DEAD SILENCE reminds me of that Chowder episode where he tries to sneak into the kitchen and to avoid his footsteps being heard, he starts throwing glass plates so that the sound of them breaking drowns out the sound of his footsteps 😭

Please, dead silence as a perk makes the game better. Cold war and Vanguard had dead silence as a perk and they are way better then MW2019. Check your facts before speaking

      I have never touched Dead Silence at all during the Beta and I've managed to sneak up behind people just fine lol. Just because you can't sprint everywhere doesn't mean you can move at all. Oh no, you have to walk a bit, how dreadful!

    We found that Dead Silence was punishing players since they couldn't hear the enemy with dead silence. So we added the sound que and delay of activation to allow sentinel players the ability to hear and get a chance to counter players trying to be aggressive on their flank.

      Except, it doesn't really work. I can still run around with near impunity while Dead Silence is active, doubly so if I'm running a loadout that hides enemy death symbols.

    Can kind of understand the sound from activating dead silence, but more so from a warzone point of view, you never knew or when someone had dead silence and was using it until all of a sudden someone runs around the corner and gets you without any sound and the rage that stems from it. Not sure how I feel about it being in multiplayer though yet.. 🤔

    I'm with you on this one Ace. I didn't know hitting Dead Silence gave me away, but would certainly explain why I ended up getting killed in a few cases. I like the idea of making Ghost more effective, as yeah, the audio cues can be a PITA, even on hectic maps.

    You know back in the day when dead silence was a perk it had a great counter, it was called sitrep pro, it's cool how you can have perks balance eachother out like 10 years ago and now the balance team just decides how you play

      It is funny how that "counter" completely made Dead Silence worthless and everyone would run Sit-Rep Pro. People will always run something to hear footsteps if there is no counter to it.

    After playing the beta, I am swinging towards cancelling my pre-order just because the devs are trying way too much to cater the casual/campy players. Playing aggressive in this game is just a punishment because of the extremely low ttk, no radar, slow movement and loud footsteps.

      Not to mention the killstreak are all nerfed version from other cods. Also too many roofs making them even more dogshit. But those same roofs provide defense for UAVs (the only streaks casuals will usually get).

      low TTK helps you lol. if you get a good flank and find more than one enemy then you are way more likely to be able to kill both with a fast TTK. Slow TTK gives at least one of them ample time to turn and burn you.

    Make the activation silent, but add a black vignette that takes up 2% of each side of the screen. So 8% view reduction in order to simulate the sneaky factor

    Balancing stuff aside, has anyone noticed that the Lachman 7.62 is bugged? It's on semi by default, but the UI shows it in the auto setting. When you switch it to the semi setting (according to the UI), it is then on full auto.

      Same with the FTAC Recon. It says it's in burst fire mode by default but it's semi auto, then when you put it in semi auto it shoots auto.

      Same with the M4 battle rifle I noticed there’s a lot of annoying bugs like my fov will just randomly change from 120 to 80 after I die or in one case never change into 120 after I spawn in

      It's a cool glitch but in practice the full auto isn't worth it at all, at least if you're at long range on ground war or something. You only need a couple shots.

    One thing I liked about Vanguard was how they did dead silence. It made your foot steps quite and you had a temporary ghost. With this you can have both dead silence as a perk and a field upgrade.

      It sounds good on paper but it might be problematic having a free perk slot. I think overclock is messed up right now but it allows two charges and 40% faster charge time alongside kills reducing cooldowns.
      Imo I prefer dead silence as a perk but ONLY if we can counter it like og MW2/3. It's kinda weird they won't do counter perks like sonic boom vs flak jacket or stopping power vs jugg, etc

    The fact the the silent footsteps ability plays a loud sound to alert all nearby enemies that you’re trying to sneak up on them might be the funniest change in the series history. Even funnier than when they accidentally made MW3 pistols one hit kill to the foot. What a bad game MW22 is.

      Might be wrong but I thought footsteps were never “silent” with dead silence, just quieter. Almost silent over gunshots and explosions but from what I understand there was still always some noise with dead silence

    What I hate even more than the fact that they make footsteps so loud in this game is that they make things like reloads and equipment usage really loud - worst of all you can't even crouch walk without someone hearing you. Like far out, if you want to stop rushing then at least allow us to walk without being soundwhored so that we can at least get around the map...

      @@trey1783 Because the game is designed on an analogies stick for movement. Crouch walking with a slight tilt is silent while you can move faster but with the disadvantage of making noise. Since pc is digital input you can adjust it for how fast you want to crouch walk. Audio is being used to inform the player of enemy positions hence there will be a lot of mechanics involving audio.

    I also notice that when you get multiple kills, maybe three or more, with dead silence the timer increases. After that fourth kill I run nearly the entire map while it's still active, so I think the more kills you get the longer the timer is from the initial point of activating.

      I don't think people realize how loud gunshots and explosions are. If you are in a battle with constant gunshots and explosions, you ain't gonna be hearing no damn footsteps.
      In order for the footsteps to be this loud the gunshots should be causing permanent hearing damage to the player and the explosions should be making their ears bleed. There is nothing remotely realistic about the sound mixing in this game. Footsteps should be whisper quiet compared to gunshots.

      People also don’t mention that Dead Silence got buffed where every kill refreshes the duration. I’ve personally had it last for two minutes as long as you continue rushing.

    If they included ninja as a perk alongside a dead silenced field upgrade, it would increase the variety of field upgrades I would use. I wouldn't need to run dead silenced if I always had ninja on or I could run a different perk and choose to run dead silenced if I still wanted the option to be silent sometimes

    You are totally right, I agree with everything you said. Since this is going to be for 2 years, I can see them making is ultra shitty for launch and then making it back to 2019 standards as a lazy way of saying they are making compensations to the community being pissed off......same with the perks saying we tried to make changes to the perk system but then decided to go back to the old style as a way of saving face without any real work. When 2019 was originally launched they had planned on not having a mini map at all, then added it back right before launch. I didn't understand why the outrage not having the red dots on the mini map because I play exclusively hardcore, and the only time I see a mini map is when I use a UAV, but after playing the beta I now understand why all the complaints. I just don't understand why they are not making the game for the people who play it......It's like going to a restaurant and ordering a rare steak, and getting a well done steak delivered to the table and the waiter saying that the chef thinks that you would prefer it cooked this way.

    I mean, my favorite way to play has always been a shotgun with either a launcher or revolver, and ghost. I don't necessarily want to stay removed from the map, but I want it to be too late to distance me when I do appear. Between this, the perk system, and the footsteps, I'm kinda tapped out of playing like that too. Aggression be damned in the "Support all play styles" game we were advertised. Which is sad, because there is a lot I like going on here in other aspects of the game.

    Even Cav in R6 has a more logical silent footstep mechanic. When her ability is activated her footsteps are quieter when walking/crouch walking but when she’s sprinting the footsteps will be much louder.

    1 thing for sure, the hip fire accuracy while the animation is going from popping the dead silence on, is insane. I spotted an enemy in a S&D match far and I mean, FAR away in the distance, while popping dead silence on. I started spraying hip fire with my MP5 within the animation and got the kill with spraying 15 bullets. That was insane🤣

    One thing that I don't see anyone complaining about yet that I've had experience with is the fact that killstreak/explosion smoke and whatever dust clouds cause from gunfire and bullets landing or whatever will only pop up on my screen but someone can see me perfectly fine through it on the kill Cam and I had no way of f****** seeing them until I'm already almost dead

    The way you make ninja work is very simple. Make it a scaling perk. Meaning if you're walking its 100% concealment, running is 70% concealment, tac sprint is 40% concealment. The % can be moved around but that the idea.

    There are better options than dead silence, i mean have you tried doing the complete opposite? Spamming decoy nades can almost completely hide foot steps, and the smoke drop drone covers like half the map (also acts as a mini uav)

    I mean, if they want dead silence to be a field upgrade, it should at least be worth it. I personally used it (in MW2019) not only for the stealth, but as a way to escape when I’m getting shot at (or to go across a dangerous zone).

    I'd consider slightly lowering footstep audio across the board with the exception of tactical sprint and giving dead silence the bonus effect of increased enemy footstep audio (basically same audio level as we currently have it). Keep the audio ping, but make it audible to yourself so casual players can recognize it and bump up the movement speed to atleast 5%.
    I like the idea of making it a field upgrade but this gives it enough of a buff in my eyes to justify it not being an ultimate perk. Need more movement based field upgrades imo. Maybe a proximity radar field upgrade that gives general direction of close range enemies that are standing still and/or in prone stance.

    As if Movement isn't slow enough, IW wants to push it to be EVEN slower, slower Dead Silence movement and even when you get hit with a grenade in this game... a grenade, it's like a stun and you're character gets shellshocked and can barely move for a couple seconds, which is just ridiculous.

    I think Dead silence being nerfed is great *in isolation*. But given how loud the foot steps are in MWII I think people see it as the only relief for rush style players.
    I would rather have the foot steps be quieter by default or have a ninja perk than have to rely on Dead Silence. I think DS is a crutch, but I want the rest of the game to be more aggression friendly to compensate.

      DS is a crutch just due to how the game is designed , specifically if you want to run around and be aggressive. It's not that it's ridiculously broken or anything, it's just that there is no other option.

      @@lrsb1678 I do okay for the most part (like a 1.5 is my average on mp) I just feel punished for playing how I want. With how the ttk is, lack of mobility options to enter a fight, and how loud you are, I just don't have to reflexes anymore to constantly win heavily disadvantaged gunfights or want to only use the mp5 lol. It's just not fun imo

      Footstep audio is the crutch, that is why everyone slows down when there is no counter to footsteps.
      If the counter to a crutch is a crutch... then the original crutch is by far too powerful.

    I personally think most of these game design decisions are coming down to how they were pushing their improved audio package as part of the game improvements. That's why we are dealing with such ridiculous footstep audio and all the extra unnecessary sounds.
    I've also noticed that suppressor attachments on your guns don't seem to significantly lower your gun audio either which also affects the ability to play stealthy/flanking styles of gameplay.
    This game is pretty much going to come down to who can afford the best set of headphones to play with as I've noticed some people seem to be able to hear you coming from miles away.

    Fully agree. At the very least if they want to stay stubborn for some dumb reason, they need to chill on the footstep volume. It's insane how loud we all are. I run around with a pistol (knife when it comes out) and I shouldn't sound like I've got bricks in my pockets wverywhere I go. It's insane how loud footsteps are. It's to the level that it's distracting

    I’m fairly certain that players can hear you tac sprinting while you are using dead silence as well, which also completely defeats the purpose if true

    Tbh as someone who rushes a lot, I've found myself foregoing dead silence for other field upgrades more and more. I've tried out other things and some work and others don't. Honestly I found the smoke drones to help a lot with some maps for rushing because everyone just avoids the area.
    But towards the direct nerfs for Dead Silence:
    I think the movement speed nerf was needed but maybe too hard of a reduction, 7% felt too much imo. Yeah it felt good but I've seen it be a problem with some lobbies in 2019. I think maybe reducing it to somewhere between 3%-5% would have been fair.
    The animation is annoying but livable. I don't understand why it's a radio but I believe the animation was to keep it in line with other field upgrade activations, the deployables take a second or two to throw and such, if they change it from being a radio for something more thematic it would be alright.
    The activation sound just flat out shouldn't be there, idk whose idea that was. Announcing any use of a field upgrade is dumb and should never be a thing.

    Totally agree with you on this. As for footstep audio, I think it should be toned down significantly, especially when you're crouch moving, ADS moving or just walking. Running can be a little louder, like in Vanguard
