  • Sophie and Sin are joined by Famicom collector David, AKA RndStranger, to discuss legendary developer Natsume's second ever game, Idol Hakkenden. A loose parody of the classical novel Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, Idol Hakkenden follows Erika, a teenage girl who must become the world's greatest idol singer in order to inherit her dying mother's fortune. Along the way, Erika recruits seven allies, and comes into conflict with the Iromono Gang, a group of washed-up entertainers who plan to turn the world into one giant late night variety show.

what a fun interview! took me a couple months to complete the famidaily run, so hearing the mahjongg spiel at 1:45 I cracked up! I think Idol Hakkenden was on my list of famicom stuff to check out that I hadn't previously heard of? definitely have plans to check that one out see what it's about.

Nansou satori hakkenden is a book I only know of because of Fate/ Grand Order. Apparently the author (kyokutei Bakin) had Hokusai do some of the art in one of his other works.

We're at a stage where we'd rather do this than talk about Souls, so we're glad!

@@SinclairLore Glad to hear and blessed be! Your Souls stuff is what lead me here, stayed for the vibes and obscure media. That evolution game Sophie streamed was pure magic.

That was great! It is good to learn about such obscure games that normally never make it out of Japan. You three were so entertaining and I want to know if I can watch the stream of the full game somewhere.

Nansou Satomi Hakkenden itself draws very heavily on The Water Margin (Suikoden in Japanese), so there is definitely a lot of cross pollination going on with influences there.
