We eat a LOT of beans. They are a great source of whole food, plant-based protein and we love adding them to our salads, enjoying them in soup, blending them into hummus or even baking them on top of a pizza! But we have always wondered… are all beans created equal? Does it really make a difference if you use pre-cooked canned beans or cook your own dry beans? We set out to answer these questions and more with this Black Bean Throwdown!
For this throwdown, we decided to compare the following:
365 Everyday Value No Salt Added Black Beans (from Whole Foods)
Pueblo Lindo Black Beans (from Aldi)
    Rancho Gordo Midnight Black Beans

Great topic, I love potatoes but noticed they were not even mentioned in this video, rare for Krocks In The Kitchen.
I tend to err on the side of overcooking the beans and always use a pressure cooker. under cooked beans are awful.
I find that if you can buy dry beans in bulk you can get organic and they are still inexpensive. I don't think most people would spend $5.99 a pound on a regular basis for the Rancho Gordo but dried bulk organic can be had for about $2 per pound if you have a Sprouts or other place to get bulk organic beans. Here is another idea for a bean video, how about comparing the taste after sprouting the beans for 2 days before cooking vs non sprouted. Sprouting is a pain, takes planning and you get a little white tail but I did find that when I was switching to a plant based diet the sprouted beans were much easier to digest (minimal bloating and much less flatulence). Also as a bonus consume a fair portion of sprouted beans one day (a bit more beans than you would normally eat in a day) and a similar amount of non sprouted a few days later and let us know if you noticed any difference.

Have you seen Dr. Gregor's pressure posting on how pressure cooking affects nutrition? Turns out that black beans cooked in a pressure cooker are more nutritious than canned - so cheaper, tastes better, and more nutritious!

I used to work for a bean company, the taste in black beans could easily be new crop vs. old crop also. I now work for people who grow them and I've had them right off the field. Huge difference :) Same with pinto beans. If you see them as a darker color, they are older crop. Look for nice white, (fresh) ones when buying dry. Nice channel, congrats on your success!

Ive been buying beans grains and legumes in dry form since i got an instant pot a year ago. Much better for many reasons and the 15 to 20 min cook time will be over before you change after work and throw your salad together. Also consider how much less environmental impact dry beans have compared to canned.

Tip from a Brazilian who cooks and eats beans everyday (beans are the staples of Brazilian meals). 1) soak your beans overnight 2) cook on ipot for just 10 minutes or less depending on how intact you want your beans. Some beans can be cooked in only 5 minutes. I cook mine for 10 minutes with seasonings and do not drain the cooking water. Then serve it on top of rice. Delish!!! 3) canned beans haven't been soaked so the anti-nutrients are still there. They are pressured cooked in their individual cans. Sometimes you can taste de aluminum. 😒 I use them from time to time. But dried cooked beans are way better. 👍😃

I am so glad I discovered this channel. I just love you guys and your videos. I buy the store brand supermarket black beans equivalent to your Aldi beans. You can always cook them in bulk on the weekend and freeze them in portions.
This is my favorite way to make black beans that I wanted to share with you. Try it over brown rice!
    1 lb. dry back beans
    2 medium yellow onions chopped
    2 green peppers
    4 cloves garlic
    2 tsp Oregano
    4 Tbs vinegar
    1 tsp pepper
2 Tbs sugar, honey or other 4 chopped Medjool dates
    1/2 tsp cumin
    1 bay leaf
Soak beans overnight. Discard water the next day (or after 8 hrs). Cover them with water to 1 inch above beans and add all ingredients. Cook in a dutch oven until they reach the tenderness you like, which is about 2 - 2.5 hrs. Add more water if needed as you go. Add salt to taste (or I splash some hot sauce on them before serving which has salt). To me, these are the tastiest way to eat black beans and it's really easy. You could convert this to an Instant Pot recipe I'm sure. I hope you try this and like it! You guys ROCK!

I cook up like 2-3 lbs of beans in my instant pot and bag them up and store them in the freezer for everyday use. I keep a total of two kinds of canned beans, refried beans for quick tacos, burritos and nachos and green beans. Lentils I don't bother cooking ahead because they are fast to cook. But makes a HUGE difference in cost when you eat beans every single day feeding a family of 5! Gotta buy dried beans and cook them yourself. And if you have an instant pot the convenience of a canned bean that ultimately adds to trash doesn't really add up.
If you have an asian or Mexican market you can find great dried beans for great prices.
Good luck and love your content.

  • @veganmamafourgirls5370
    @veganmamafourgirls5370 5 лет назад +1

Thanks for another great video! I have also heard that Rancho Gordo are the best, but the price... I usually buy organic dried beans in the bulk section at Whole foods market. Sometimes my local grocery store will have bags of organic dried beans for a better price like $1.99/pound bag, so I stock up on those. Honestly, the Whole foods beans are better and worth the price. But the value always gets me. I also eat a ton of beans and value definitely counts for a lot. I cook them in my instant pot either when I am preparing the rest of the meal or overnight on slow cook. There is definitely a learning curve to mastering the timing with pressure, but once I get it just right, I write it down and keep referring back to that.

Hummus from cooked-from-dry garbanzos is so good, I put a clove of garlic in when I cook the beans. A grocer near me has pintos and mayocoba in bulk on sale regularly for ~$0.40-0.50/pound. I'll go across town once in a while to get other legumes in bulk at a good price, and where I know they go through inventory regularly. I like pressure cooking them as its not only cheaper, but I can choose to make them firmer or softer, or flavored, depending on my preference that week. I almost always soak them so the cook time is really short.
I also can beans sometimes to have for convenient meals, but that requires a specialized pressure canner and a bit of know how. But if anyone is into pressure canning, beans are a great item to stock in the pantry.

From my own experience, beans come out best when soaked. The Rancho Gordo are nice for when you are making a bean centered dish. We buy our beans usually in the bins at our co-op as sometimes the bagged versions at the regular grocery may have been sitting on the shelf for a LONG time.
As for cooking in the IP, I would HIGHLY recommend the book Vegan Under Pressure by Jill Nussinow. Her charts (Jessica would love them) are spot on for cooking all types of beans, rice, grains, etc and her recipes are delicious. The only thing I dislike is the layout of the book. But you learn to get around that because everything else is so worth it.

I buy mine at my local Kroger in the bulk bins. If they are out in the bins I get the cheapest bag I can find. If I buy canned (usually good for when I work late nights) I usually get the simple truth organic no salt added beans or the Walmart brand no salt added. When I make my beans I always throw herbs and spices in so they are extra flavorful. I love doing bay leaves, smoked paprika, cumin, coriander, garlic cloves, and chopped onions(or shallots). I use them in taco salads, Rice and beans, burrito bowls, chilli, black bean soup, etc.

To me the big advantage of Instant Pot (black) beans is the simplicity of 1) soaking 2) cooking exactly the same time as brown rice, 22-24 minutes. Saute whatever aromatics one has patience for, use some sort of stock and other flavoring base such as tomato or soybean, spices, maybe a little meat if that's your thing, and then just let the Instant Pot do the cooking with heating up, cooking, and natural release taking about an hour. Even better, I am getting dried beans and brown rice for free because people where I am just don't like them.

  • @Firebuck

The trick to good looking, no-wrinkle beans is pre-soaking. I just throw the water and beans in a covered pot overnight, cook them in the instant pot the next day. For pre-soaked beans you need only enough water to cover them in the instant pot, and less water helps keep the color darker.
I get my "common" beans (black, pinto) from the grocery store, and the rest from Vitacost.com. Vitacost has competitive prices on beans, and for some reason the varieties that aren't used as commonly (garbanzo beans, navy beans) taste a lot better than those from my local store.

I think if you batch cook the beans in the instant pot at the beginning of the week then the Aldi beans should win the convenience catagory as well! Plus you can add a better flavor profile with your own seasonings that way. Great video! Thanks!

The Rancho Gordo Bean Club is an awesome way to sample a lot of their beans--and get a discount on others. Canned beans go in our salads--just like you said, you don't really taste them specifically. I always use Rancho Gordo when we just need a bowl of beans and greens. They are worthy of eating on their own.

I prefer to cook my own beans because of the huge reduction in packaging. I can buy a 2kg (4.4lb) bag of beans for about $5. I store my own cooked beans in a pot in the fridge, which lasts for almost a week. I also freeze some cooked beans (especially chickpeas) in re-usable storage containers, without the liquid, then use them to sprinkle on the salads I take to work. This keeps my salad cold, but is defrosted by lunchtime. Cooking beans from dry keeps down the amount of garbage/recycling tremendously.

What was the store in KC? I’m in Wichita and get up there on occasion.
I totally love cooking my beans and always have a pot in the fridge of pintos. Then I take them out heat them up and add a sprinkling or two of Natural Grocers dried refried beans and I stanly have no fat refried bean so cheap. When I cook my beans this is what I add- powdered onion and garlic powder, cumin, a tad smoked paprika and chili powder, a little liquid smoke. If you not salt free smoked salt.
Also I notice I get my beans at Walmart and noticed the lighter the pinto the fast they cook and they get mushy which I like. I do soak them over night or during the day. Hoping you do a post on my recipe and adding those instant refried beans. I sure enjoy you both.

Hey Susie! It was actually a store called The Better Cheddar (in Country Club Plaza), but we found that they have a ton of spices, vinegar, teas, sauces, preserves, etc. It was interesting looking for vegan specialty products in a cheese store 😯 I am extremely intrigued by these dried refried beans... I just asked Brian if he's every heard of that. Will have to check it out for sure! Thanks for all of the insight and for watching ❤️️

I have been really wanting to try the Rancho Gordo beans. I usually by my beans in bags or in bulk but I’ll keep a few cans on hand for “emergencies.” I prefer the taste of instant pot beans and usually cook up about a pound at a time and freeze some in smaller containers in the cooking liquid to prevent freezer burn. I like to soak before cooking (usually) and season them after soaking to give them different flavors based on the type of beans. I almost always use a teaspoon or two of better than bouillon, liquid smoke, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and smoked paprika. For black or pinto I like to make them more Mexican flavored so I will add chili powder and cumin as well. They are so good right out of the instant pot. You can also blend them up with a bit of the liquid to make “refried” beans like you did in one of your videos. I like using homemade chickpeas for hummus because I can cook them longer and they are softer and blend even smoother. I’ve also recently tried making air fried falafel which called for soaked (uncooked) chickpeas. Those were really good.
Thanks for the great video. I love math too. 💙📚🤓

Thanks for the amazing tips! I was wondering if leaving some of the liquid in might help when freezing the beans. Thanks for all of the seasoning suggestions. I'm going to save this info for Brian to use next time we make beans since he is our "seasoning expert" LOL. We have some dry garbanzo beans on hand, but have never actually cooked the dry ones yet! I definitely want to make hummus with them and see how it compares. Since we use some of the "aqua faba" from the can for our hummus recipes, I wonder if using the cooking liquid from the Instant Pot would be the same or if it is less concentrated... we have a lot of testing to do! We are working on putting together questions for Q&A videos right now actually, so I will add these questions to our master list 🙂 I have been very deliberate about not repeating a band tee LOL. I'll definitely have to share more about why I have so many.

Soaking them not only allows you to cook them faster, but also makes them easier to digest, since it starts an enzymatic process.
Pressure cooking (with or without IP) is great for softening the beans in a shorter time than on the stove.
Now, if you like stewed beans (lets say, a black bean chili), you first (pre-)cook them in the IP, and THEN slow cook them with the veggies and seasoning (what in Venezuela is called sofrito, and in Indian food recipes “masala”). It is longer, but the results are totally worth it.

I found my Publix store brand is inexpensive and better quality. I also buy the 12 lb bags of black and pinto beans at Sam's Club. Your hummus would be so much tastier if you cook your chickpeas in the IP with onions and cumin. I cringed when I saw you throwing out the cooking liquid! The cooked beans will absorb a lot of the liquid if you put them in the fridge for 24 hours before you freeze them. I personally prefer to cook my beans very tender similar to canned so I cook for extra 10-20 minutes in the IP...around 40 minutes. If you store with the cooking liquid you also have the option of making a fast soup by reheating with some veggies. Great video!

Pizza is tough... LOL. On the very first day of our two weeks of potatoes, I actually left our apartment and walked to a nearby grocery store that sells freshly made pizzas... and was seriously considering getting a few slices. I felt like I NEEDED that pizza. And that was after ONE meal of plain potatoes. Somehow I resisted the urge and walked back home... but it was rough. Then, during the first day at work while on the potato diet, someone brought in lunch for the entire office and it was fried chicken... 😏 I ate my plain potatoes like a weirdo while they all enjoyed their chicken lol. The funny thing is, I actually really like it now when people bring food that I can't have to the office, because every time I am able to resist it, it makes me stronger, knowing that I have the will power to choose not to eat it. It's like being tested and it feels really good to succeed. But over time, I sort of became immune to people eating stuff like that around me. I don't even really want the stuff anymore, because I enjoy the food I get to eat. Keep us updated - we loving hearing about what everyone is doing :) Thanks for watching! - Jessica

I always soak my beans overnight and find this gives a better end product. You won't need to cook them as long in the instant pot. Change the water before you cook them though. Some people (live foodies) like to soak them 2-3 days with water changes each day to make them sprout first, that's totally optional.

Awesome comparison! Super helpful and fun to watch! I'd recently bought 2 bags of Rancho Gordo beans online (one of chickpeas and one of rio zape) and, even though the bags themselves were a good price, the shipping (to NH anyway) was about the same exact same price as the two bags of beans - $12! My order ended up costing $24 for only 2 bags of beans. I was looking forward to trying them, so I bought them anyway. The taste of the beans was very good, but I'm not sure if it was worth the price for me. I've been buying the Westbrae Natural No Salt canned beans at my local grocery, but they're about $2 a can. Ugh. (Especially since I usually go through one can of beans a day.) I'm definitely going to switch to either the Aldi dried (if I have time to cook them) or the 365 Whole Foods brand. Thank you for such a fantastic video, guys!! :D (Jessica, loved your math! I love math, too...that's why I got my degree in it! lol)

Rancho Gordo beans may require significantly less cooking time than normal beans because they are generally much fresher. And you definitely want to keep the aquafaba (bean juice) and not rinse and drain it away. For some of their varieties, the aquafaba is the main attraction.

To answer your question I buy canned, we have a local store that put random cans of basic beans(brown, black, kidney etc) on great sales and I will stock up on them and buy several cases at the time. But having said that I do buy dry as well I buy pintos in the 50# bag and black beans in my area I can only seem to find in 8# bags so I buy several at a time as well as white northern , dark kidney (my fav for salads) , garbanzo. You can batch cook and freeze beans. That way you always have them on hand and you don't have to make them so often. I freeze them in 1.5 cup portions which is the equivalent of a 15 oz can. My hubby always knows when I've used canned beans vs dry beans that I've cooked. You can really taste the difference. If you soak them overnight they come out better in the instant pot then when they aren't soaked. But in a pinch you don't have to soak them.
