One of the most thorough reviews I've ever seen on an rc from someone who obviously knows engineering. Great job and look forward to more of your reviews.
Seeing the video preview while scrolling through youtube for Axial Builder’s kit: “Hmm, I didn’t know Howard Donald (Take That) is into RCs! Let’s check it out!” ;)) Edit: 10 minutes into the video and I had to subscribe. As a mechanical engineer and petrolhead myself I take my hat off in front of the amount of knowledge delivered. Quality stuff! Edit: When I posted the above little did I knew about what an icon you are in the RC world. Was just scratching the surface of RC crawling, looking for anything that could increase my knowledge about the hobby. Nowadays I wear a proud Holmes Hobbies sticker on my DIY crawler powered by one of your Crawlmaster Sport 550 13T. Such a smooth motor. All the best onwards, Mr Holmes!
i have been in this hobby for over 30 years but have only just got into scale crawlers , i absolutely love these reviews , seriously in depth, i have recently bought the Traxxas TRX4 and im about to pull the trigger on this one for comparison, i love the engineering of these vehicles and listening to you i can clearly see you know what your talking about , fantastic video, bravo.
Nice to hear from someone who understands mechanical design, and can therefore appreciate the engineering that went into this platform, and why it performs so well on the trail. Good video.
Just ordered my SCX10ii kit, and this video really sealed the deal. Very comprehensive and informative. Will be putting an HH Puller stubby in it(either 2700 or 3300), with the BLE Pro esc. Thanks for the awesome review, John!
I actually haven't made my motor/esc purchase for my scx10ii build yet. Been finishing up my Bomber build first, but have the scx10ii kit assembled and am about to paint it...electronics being ordered soon!
I felt the need to update what I went with, since you asked. Went with a HH Puller Pro 2700kv (540 can, not a stubby), and a Mamba Monster X ESC. Way overkill on the ESC, but I got a good price on it and so far it is working fantastically with the motor. Went with the standard sized motor over the stubby to have a bit more power on tap, and it seems to be doing great in the rig...very smooth, very good low speed control. I dig it!
Nice! Perfect combo for the rig. Have the BLE Pro in my Bomber and it's an awesome ESC, definitely using them ( and HH motors, of course) in upcoming builds.
I just ordered mine two days ago, so next week i am an Axial SCX 10 II owner too. Im so curious. And very nice top Quality Video. Awesome. Keep up the good work.Greetings from Germany!
Fantastic, very in-depth analysis and review!! 👍👍 I can't wait to be able to afford ANY SCX10 II. I look forward to seeing what you come up with for this Rig. Carmine 🚂
I've had a 5700kv castle with mamba x in a gen7 stock and it took it. No brakes at all. Now I have it in my gen8 and the gear down works great. Perfect crawl and plenty wheel speed. I run at only 55% power though on 3s.
Watch this old video today. Just finishing up on my build. Just wondering if you came up with a esc motor combo specifically for the SCX10 II? Would truly appreciate a response. Keep up the great job. Your videos have come a long way in 5 years.
Excellent review mate! Gee that’s interesting that lil trick u did with the shocks👍🏻u know you’re stuff! Attention to detail is so important to some. I like that u still want to throw big power at it and break it👍🏻🤩 thank you. Lots of helpful stuff
finally got mine finished, I have to admit I'm not a real fan of the huge bumpers and the body. I use a extended frame for my K5 Blazer body , I think there basically the same size right? That way I can use the metal bumpers I have. Plus it looks better.
Haven't gotten a chance to drive one. Overall, the plastic seems brittle from all the breaks I've seen but the rig is well designed. It's just right for the price point IMO.
@@HolmesHobbies yeah I hear that thanks for the reply I'm sure your a busy guy but I love your videos so I'll be sure to keep watching have a great day
Thanks Mr Holmes for the helpful information. With the 1/10 scale crawler options available now, would you say the Axial SCX10.2 kit is still the best option, or would you advise me to go another way for my first? Thanks.
So how much more money did you spend to get it on the road , after tire, motor, electronics and body ? I’m not sure what want to go, get a RTR, then build it from there, or build this kit, I’m looking for a good scale rig. Thanks for your video,
John, What would you suggest electronics wise for someone who wants to do a little bit of everything. Rock Crawling and out on the trails. Will be driving in the muck and mud, snow, water pretty much everything the elements can throw at it. Thanks !!
Water and mud will require cleaning to keep any motor happy. But we do have sealed can style TrailMaster Sport brushed motors that are inexpensive and tend to run in bad elements longer without work. The 550 size would be great in the sxc10ii
For a do all system that you will clean frequently or else avoid water/mud- TrailMaster BLE controller paired with a 540 Puller Pro 2700kv. Flexible enough for practically any 10th scale rig from racer to basher to trail rig.
I've been told that with a brushless system you should gear down, so with a 2700 kv Puller Pro..would that be the case ? I'm new to all of this so I appreciate all of the feedback. Was debating going with the 3500 and just dropping down to a 12t pinion, would the 2700 require that as well ?
I love Axial for developing the XL... but they don't listen to solutions if it cuts in on their replacement part sales !! Axial has KNOWN ABOUT THE HD PINION FLAW sense December and STILL tell customers it's the first time they have heard about it... I've got a list of direct obsolence that they Incorporated into the XL.. I've made my XL a amazing machine!! I do free HD pinion Modifications for any and all XL owners.. latter Jonny
Why would you recommend a 2200 Mah 3s battery in this vehicle versus a higher capacity mah battery like a 4000mah 3s? How much crawling run time would you get on a 2200 Mah 3s battery?
Greetings, HolmesHobbies, I would like to know if you could be me a personal axial scx10 model with all the aluminum parts, some performance and I would like to buy it from you and with good commas for all terrain 🤝 done for you, it would be a pleasure for me. $?

Just got done building mines. My first build :) instructions were very clear easy to understand. Made it a fun build.

Great video! Looking forward to the Ascender comparison!
awesome review when 1 talks about bearing sizes etc. A detailed review on a SCXII from someone who knows the product & hobby! HOLMES knows!

great video. Hope to see more reviews from you. I'm still trying to choose between this and the Ascender.
Nice review. Picked up mine today from onetencrawlers here in Perth. Also grabbed the Crawlmaster expert 13T & br-xl esc

great video like how u covered the main part of the rc and didnt worry about the body and looks .
liked and subscribed !!!!
Thanks! Looks aren't so important when the body is made to be changed easily. Small potatoes next to the nitty gritty of the rig itself.
Thanks for the very detailed review. I can't wait to get one for myself.

RC Rainman haha. Wow, I learned a lot! Great video.
Nice review. Do you know if the old rock sliders from the first gen fit in there?
I'm liking the 1400kv revolvers 540 in mine. plenty of wheel speed for me with stock gearing.
Great overall review lots of information thank you
very good review thanks a lot
good review on the scx10 II
o think I just might build one
oh yeah need more lights the dark background
John..... You are the man!!

Cant wait to see some brushless bashing.. For test reasons of course.

its between the 10.2 and the TRX-4. The 10ii is capable. The TRX-4 is a lot of fun and built like a tank.
Thanks for your reply. I'm learning TRX-4 Bronco in sunset.

Chris Hill gearing down isn't necessary unless the wheelspeed is too fast. Stock gearing and 2700kv is perfect on the scx10ii IMO

1st class review 👍🏽👍🏽
Could I put my trail master 550 motor on the kit transmission without any fabrications????
Is this still relevant 4years later? Or what would be the best option now, similar
Still a good deal, many consider this better than the axial scx 10 iii. lot of spares and upgrades on the market also.
Would it be possible to use revo rod ends on the stock links? Thanks
yes indeed. You will want to use them on top and bottom links so that the pinion angle is unchanged.
Awesome review John. Thumbs-up
#inholmeswetrust
try review some Gmade product and compare them
We would certainly like to, just haven't bought (or been given) Gmade products yet.
Why would you recommend a 2200 Mah 3s battery in this vehicle versus a higher capacity mah battery like a 4000mah 3s? How much crawling run time would you get on a 2200 Mah 3s battery?
I get over an hour with a 2200. Vehicles are more capable with smaller batteries, and it's easy to keep two or three in the pocket
