- With the right technique I think the Zoom H1n can definitely be used to record a voiceover.

What continues to amaze me is the sound quality of such very inexpensive devices. It is a matter of microphone / device placement and technique, nine times out of ten.
Absolutely, owning cheap audio gear these days is no excuse for bad sound anymore!
Dear, can we record the audio from Rode NT USB mic into external recorders like 'Zoom H2n' etc. The reason is that my windows 10 on mt Desktop PC has made this audio like trash due to driver bug issues windows. Please reply for the sake of humanity.
Try connecting the usb mic to your pc like you normally would, and connect the headphone out of the usb mic to the line in of the zoom h1n using an Aux cable (3.5 mm to 3.5 mm).
Dude..You are always the go to guy for H1n ..Whenever I get some doubt or issue with my H1n...I open RUclips and search " Julian Krause H1n "
You are my hero! Great and inspiring videos. I purchased an H1N recently and have made my audio better already. Thanks for all the tips!
Big thanks, stuck in lockdown with only my H1. this was exactly what i needed to know.
Thanks Julian for this video, it helps me decide what to use to record my narrations. Zoom H1n is my first dedicated audio recorder, it is intimidating to use at first but I eventually clawed it with the help of your beginners guide. Although, you don't consider this device as a pro, my narration took a giant leap of improvement when I switch from my phone to Zoom H1n.
WOW ! I CAME TO FIND WHY MY VOICE HAS POP UPS AND I GOT THE ANSWER IN LESS OF 1 MIN. GREAT JOB MY FRIEND THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Mixing L and R also reduces the noise, because each channel has different noise and it averages signal when combined.
You can also speak to just one capsule pointed at you, and discard the other capsule's signal. So in order to get mono, you don't need to mix the channels together, which sometimes creates phase issues (even though the capsules are really close together).
Hi Julian. thank you for this useful video. You rock man, so clear and clean (the recordings, I mean)... im missing something though, a look at your equipment. I'm curious to see the kind of tripod you use, for example. Some links could be handy too!
_Vielen Dank! Sehr schön auf den Punkt gebracht, Herr Krause!_
Really helpful - thank you!
Great job Julian🤘👍
very informative info - I have the H1n and want to use it in iMovie as a voice over mic. Thanks, Charlie
Yes if you have one and not in the mood to buy a proper mic for voice (for podcast, livestream, classes, voiceover... - a cardioid mic) it can "do it" but you have to treat the audio (or "polish crap"), as this zoom gear is mainly designed as an ambient recorder, it is very sensitive and captures very detailed and loud ambient noise. If you are not using it on an acoustic isolated room and have a very very quiet PC, the recording is gonna contain very loud ambience, even stuff happening far away (car, bus passing, dogs barking, birds. etc..), your PC cooler is gonna sound like a jet engine probably...
Great video. Ha! The pop filter is SO true. Well done for making a big point about it at the start. Actually Zoom should include it in the box.
Excellent video as always.
Wonderful video.!
Best video on RUclips obot Zoom h1n.!!!
Love you sir.!😊🥰♥️
Excellent information. Thank you!
Thank you for all your help.
Great video. Thanks, man!
Well prepared 👏🏼
Thank you! Excellent video
Thanks Big thanks, .....this was exactly what i needed to know. From Indonesia
Great review! thank you so much.
I just ordered my H1n yesterday. As much as I'd like to support local Aussie sellers I couldn't pass up the AliExpress price. AU$60 cheaper than Aussie Amazon. About AU$120 cheaper than US Amazon. Downside is slow deliver, 20-40 days.
I just got an H1n and this is a very helpful video. Thanks!
I just bought a Pop Filter, about 7USD and I also bought a "Neewer Black Ball Type Foam Windscreen Pop Filter for Condenser Microphone" I have cars going past and recording hypnosis/nlp/coaching tracks for higher end executive clients but cars go past every now and then, even late at night #($*% so I'm hoping I can set it up, then put the Ball Type over it rather than just the pop filter. I specifically use left and right speaker/tracks. THANK YOU JK for mentioning how going Mono can have that effect over Stereo!!! Gold
That’s a great solution for quick VO’s while traveling. Wish I would’ve seen this two days ago! 🤦🏽♂️ I just ordered an h8 to lug around with a mic. I mean it’s still going to be beneficial in the long run, but I could’ve waiting a few more months on it. Oh well. Now I know
hello bro what if zoom h1n vs tascam Dr-05x which one would you recommand for same price?
H1n
@@mrtambourineman6107 That's a good argument.
Excellent vid! You just earned a sub from me! Great job!
hey, I've started following your videos recently and they'r very informative and easy to understand. It would be great if you can make a video on post production using different stuff like equalisation, compression and other settings. Thanks
Hey, I have a video about my post processing workflow if you are interested: ruclips.net/video/GVovXsbCjjU/видео.html
its great as usual
We were surprised at how good the H1n is. You can use a pop filter or save money by putting on a wind shield (dead cat) as the wind shield will work indoors and out. Once you get the setting right the H1n does a very good job. It feels a bit cheap and nasty but don't judge a book by its cover. We have also been experimenting with mics and have found that expensive microphones aren't necessary for great sound. We have a dead cheap Huxley $14 mic that we got from Aldi and we have combined that with a Scarlett Solo pre-amp. We use Audacity to capture audio for voice-over and we are getting results that seem to be as good as using a Rode Procaster (which needs a pre-amp in order to work).
Good work pls can u do boom mic set up for this H1n and how to configure it for film making. Thanks
Julian just bought an H1N to use as a camera mic and although the audio is very good there is so much background noise which sounds like a water fall and I’ve tried recording using the Zoom H1N as a recording device but the noise still remains . . can you help.
Very nice
So Julian, what is your preferred equipment for podcast voice over? Thank you for this informative youtube video on how to use the Zoom H1N.
Nice video sir from Bangladesh
Julian thanks for the video. could you please show us the post production workflow. thanks a lot.
Solid
Hey, thank you for your good explanation. I learned from it.I wounder if Ican ask you about using the zoom h1 recorder like a nec mike on person who is in movement and there is the wind matter that is a problem and also what setting to use for this need? thank you. Smadar.
Hi Julian, may I know what would be a suitable setting to record nature sounds? Eg: rain, water stream, bird chirping etc. Would appreciate a video on that. Thanks in advance! :)
How do you deal with really strong plosives? I find that even with the windscreen and a pop filter on top of that, it's a little sensitive to my Ps, so I need to be extra careful about my positioning and distance from the recorder. Great mic capsules though and the quality sounds stellar.
top shelf
Arghhhh!! You said that the H1n "definitely is not my first choice for voiceover work"... but then you didn't tell us what you recommend. Can you do a video on your top voiceover equipment recommendations then? Maybe your top 3-4 including a budget option? I'm sure that there's stacks of RUclipsrs, like me, that would love to hear your thoughts on that.
_Fix your mind before you fix your body, dude!_
Thanks Julian. Right mic capsule of my h1n gets more disturbing noise from wifi signal (interference) than the left mic capsule - especially when my phone rings. Have you found the same? Is your right mic capsule is too sensitive too? I start thinking mine’s broken.
Hey..very helpful video..which stand and pop filter you are using here..can u pls tell or send the link.
Hi Julian. Can I also use the Zoom H1n for cooking videos like ASMR style? Would you suggest that I also use a filter for it if I want to capture chopping sounds, pouring sounds, etc? Thank you!
Hi Julian , thanks for this video. Can I get rid of the breeze in post production?
Great video - wondering whether a foam cover for a mic acts as a pop filter or not thanks
great. do you have any video or suggestion for setting up the zoomh1 with rode pic pro plus for recording. i m totally beginner and want to start my channel.. what how to setting both items as dual sync recording.. would appreciate
hello there!, i need to record a play in a theatre, which is the best setup?
hey Julian, can you pls talk about your set-up there? Like a tripod for H1n, the filter etc. Thanks and greetings from Tanzania
how do I record sound from the DJ console into H1n and what is the setting I should apply?
Hey, i recently bought zoom h1n and i'm planning to make a video, more like an interview based and some voiceover. I think i'm gonna use my rode smartlav+ and rode videomic rycote and i need some advice when should i use a lav mic and when shoud i use rode videomic rycote? Is rycote better for voiceovers and lav mic for a "sit down" interview or is it the other way around? Or should i only use a lav mic for both purposes? Thank you in advance! 😊
What about using an external microphone combined with the zoomh1n to record the sound in a more directional way?
All my videos were made with zoom H1. Pretty decent recorder.
PLease tell us what do you think is the best option for filmmakers regarding voice over stuff? Is it Tascam X8? I have Azden SMX 30 mic. Shall i buy Zoom H1n in 2022? :)
Thanks for the video! I am waiting for my h1n and they are really useful. Do you think a windscreen instead of a pop filter would be enough to make more or less decent voiceovers? Or would it be a huge step down from the pop filter?
Whether a foam cover is enough really depends on how close the mic is to you and how heavy your plosives are. I mean, a foam cover is better than nothing but a real pop filter in front of the mics is going to be even more effective.
What a very useful video. Thanks . 👌
Please what kind or name is the holder used to set up the mic?
and please link for it and the Pop filter.
@Swiftie Falcon Well is there a link to buy these accessories
hi. i liked your video. just wonder where you got this pop filter ? in front of Zoom H1n . can you send me the link, please. thank you. Mr .G
How would be the sound recording in the house with some background noise for youtube ?
You kick ass
Hi Julian! Would you mind sharing what kind of popkiller you use here? Thanks!
Hi, I have a zoom H1n which when connected to windows 10 does not pickup an audio signal. I had the ASIO driver updated reinstalled etc but windows or Audacity does not pic up a signal. Other USB mics work fine from the same USB port. I am also able to transfer files and the computer detects the Zoom H1n's SD card. I would appreciate any advice you can give me as DELL tech support is clueless.
Instead of the pop filter, will the fuzzy things that go on each zoom mic work for the same purpose?
Perfect coverage of topic. Hyper vloggers could learn a lot from you if they took the time to listen instead of talking.
really good content 😍... please i want link to buy the pop filter you used on this video
that is why there are Search engines
Where can I get a pop filter like that which attaches to the zoom or tascam?
hey Julian, should i get the old H1 to avoid the dial knob because i'm planning to put this recorder in my pocket
Please make a review of the H1n used as Audio Interface in a DAW ( like Ableton live 10 ) for use with 64/128 samples 44khz/24bit so I can have a reference what is the latency. Nobody is doing this, i've searched everywhere.
I have a small laptop of 11.6inch from 2014, intel N3530 cpu laptop with 4GB ram and want to use it with a midi keyboard on stage using some VSTs like Arturia V collection or something similar, I want to know how bad would the latency be if I used the Zoom H1n instead of the built in soundcard. The lower I go in samples the smaller the latency but the greater the risc of crackles and sound generally breaking. I know that, also I know that differs from one VST to another, depending on the CPU load it generates. Would love to see the H1n in action at least.
thank you for reading through this far :)))
Hi Can you please tell me how to connect ZoomH1n and Boya BY M1 lav mic to my smartphone so that I can record Audio and Video in together
is the h1n good for recording a podcast with a guest? or would you recommned for separate mics for the host and the guest?
Could you use it with Screencastomatic? My webcam and other devices have terrible microphones. My webcam is connected by USB for camera, I've unplugged the Webcam mic from the headphone socket. Then I've plugged in the H1n via USB but can't select it as an alternative microphone. Also if I was filming myself using my phone, could I use H1n instead of phone mic.
please show the settings to record the music played on Keyboard / Organ - Amos Solanky (India)
what are you using for script infront camera?
Hey thanks for the video. I am thinking about getting the H1n for playing around with audio and video, just recording stuff outside etc.
But using is as a voice over mic sounds interesting. Is there any major difference in different price ranges for pop filters?
There might be slight differences depending on the material of the popfilter. But these differences are very minimal. The one you can see in the video was the cheapest one I could find and it works great. :) The placement of the popfilter does make the most difference. Don't put it right on top of the mic. Leave at least a 2 inch gap between the mic and the popfilter and it will work well.
Be aware not all cards will work in H1n. Received kodak card with my package deal, it needed formatting every time I switched it on, which also wiped all recordings, rather inconvenient to backup to another drive before switching off. I bought SanDisk card which works fine. Apart from that, no problem with the Zoom. If you are prepared to accept that a jewel can be made from plastic, that's the H1n.
Can it be used for singing for RUclips channel
good video.. upload h1n live sound record.. and connect DSLR
Thanks, glad you like my videos!
Hello, can I use h1n recorder to record drum set? Will all drums and cymbals be recorded clearly?
Great video thank you! Is there a mic around the same price point you would suggest that is more suitable for voice over ? Also, what program do you use to combine the x and y ? Great video by the way! So much more helpful than others I’ve seen. I also watched your video on the settings.
If you are only searching for a mic I suggest you check out the Samson Q2u. You can connect it directly to a computer via USB and record audio.
For turning the stereo track into a mono track I used Adobe Audition. But you can so the same thing with the free software Audactiy: ruclips.net/video/ZJ-Nq-os2YI/видео.html
@@JulianKrause Dear, can we record the audio from Rode NT USB or Samson Q2u mic into external recorders like 'Zoom H2n' etc. The reason is that my windows 10 on mt Desktop PC has made this audio like trash due to driver bug issues windows. Please reply for the sake of humanity.
@@JulianKrause so the H1n does not have a setting for mono? Even in mp3 mode?
@@realMartinHamilton The H1n cannot record in mono, it's always in stereo. But you can easily make it mono in post production.
Hi Julian, Thanks for the tutorials. What do you use on your laptop to transfer the files on to? Audacity? or something else? What I really want to achieve is to know how to record my voice with some background music. Is that possible to do? Warmest wishes
Hi ,yes, you can do it with Audacity, he's using Adobe Audition.
Can you connect Shure SM58 to Zoom H1N using XLR to 3.5mm adapter?
Can i use this half a meter from the device? I want to record guitar..
If you could test the Tascam dr-10l the same way that you did with the zoom h1n, it would be highly appreciated. I use the zoom h1n to record audio to sync with my GoPro for mountain biking videos. The Tascam recorder is a lot smaller though and I could clip it onto my waist bag. I would like to switch to using that but I need to see the performance of the limiter and the sound quality.
Hey, I already thought about getting the DR-10L. Might do a video on it soon. I think the sound quality will be excellent but the limiter seems to be not that great. Have a look at the video Curtis made: ruclips.net/video/5JnMqxsw69A/видео.html
Do you want to record the trail with the recorder or your voice? Or both?
@@JulianKrause Both. I just use a Multiband Compressor in post to get the sound I want.
The Duke of MTB The Zoom H1n can do pretty much all the things the DR-10L can do. The biggest plus for the DR-10L is the small formfactor. But the H1n has the limiter. So if you would want to use a lavalier I might suggest that you buy a decent lavalier and plug it into your H1n. Just an idea...
Does anyone know the make and model of the pop filter he’s using here?
What pop filter are you using? Does it connect to the recorder?
What program do you use for editing sound wav and movie together?
Thanks for sharing your tips for recorder. Btw, where you buy that pop filter for h1n? Can you add to your description the name or links where we can buy that filter? Thanks
Hey, I don't have a link for it. But it's just a normal pop filter. Just search it online and you'll find tons of options.
For further removing ambient, using mid/side technique and remove the side completely.
That sounds interesting! How would you get the mid side separation from the XY mic setup found in the H1n?
@@JulianKrause You could use a free vst/re pluggin like kiloHearts Stereo, dail the side all the way down. Other options: Brainworx BX solo, Voxengo MSED, Goodhertz MidSide Matrix, etc.
Great video btw, I just got the H1n myself and ordered the Zoom universal windscreen with a rode shockmount.
I already have Rode video Mic Pro+ but I considering to buy Zoom H1N for an voiceover record and some sfx record,
I just think is it worth for it or just keep use Rode videomic pro+ for all of that?
SupplayHEYRaiwa U shd go for Blue Yeti for voiceover
Deadcat or parallon case same as pop filter?
Dear, can we record the audio from Rode NT USB mic into external recorders like 'Zoom H2n' etc. The reason is that my windows 10 on mt Desktop PC has made this audio like trash due to driver bug issues windows. Please reply for the sake of humanity.
Hi! Thanks for your video. Can you tell me please Whats your camera ?
Currently a Fuji X-T3 but back then this video was filmed on a Sony A7s.
I just got my zoom h1n recorder from amazon,i use power bank to turn on the recorder. Usually, after using the recorder for sometime, if i disconnect the power bank and after sometime say 1 hr, if I switch it on again ,Messege appears "date & Time has been resetted" .Is it because i didn't use AAA batteries inside recorder
I think yes, I had the same problem.
time resets because the internal clock works by batteries even when the recorder is off
Please demonstrate about the use of zoom h1n with DSLR camera for video recording purpose. I have tried whatever you have shown in the video (with manual settings and 3.5 audio jack) but it's not working. I just wanted to know how it works.
Are you referring to this video? ruclips.net/video/7UetssGT9g8/видео.html
There I showed every step you have to take to use the H1n on top of a camera.
Can you describe exactly what doesn't work?
Can you do a post production with this recorder?
Is the windcut filter that we got from the h1n pack can replace the pop filter thing? Thanks for answering.
No, the low cut cannot replace a wind shield. It can help to reduce wind noise but if you are recording outside you definitely need some kind of wind protection for the H1n.
Is it good for singing
