@@_stellasolitaria_ hi there. Yes. It helps to keep it under 5.5 on the gain dial. But the H1n is a noisy recorder anyway. Not as noisy as many other products but noisy by pro standards. The H1n still boils my blood somewhat, it seems like they completely missed the point of the original. Having a single AA is much easier to manage with the H1 compared to the 2xAAA on the H1n. I can’t argue with any of that. But it’s the cheapest most entry level recorder in their H series. I don’t expect them to change much for the better. But I do appreciate the gain dial as opposed to the buttons. I still find myself reaching for my old H1 more than I thought I would. But you’re right about just about everything you said.

Great video. I'm just starting out on the RUclips journey and bought this to help with the audio quality of my motoring video's, travelling around Europe in our open top car... Your review has really helped and I'm now looking forward to watching more from you. Thanks
You deserve far more than 12k subs. This is a very high quality and just great video. I think the only thing missing might just be your thumbnails. I think once someone clicks they’ll have a hard time not sticking around. Keep up the good work and work on your thumbnails, maybe even hire a professional to help if you can afford it. My gut instinct tells me putting your face in the thumbnail would help. To me your thumbnails make me feel like I’m about to watch an amateur RUclipsr, not a professional like you are. Sorry for being so harsh on your thumbnails but in my time watching RUclips it feels like that’s the only thing keeping you from being a top tier product reviewer. 👍👍
No no. That’s great advice. I hate doing thumbnails. I’m no good at it. No matter what I do. Perhaps I need to consult a pro. Thanks very much for your kind words!

Have the same Recorder. I wanted to check for other opinions about it. Thanx for the review - totally agree with you. And I learn new things about the device :)
Incredible video. First video I've seen of yours. Very crisp video quality and audio and the set behind you is pleasant to they eye. I am convinced on purchasing the H1n now
I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. I can mount it on my camera cage and plug it into the camera and either use that audio or synch the H1 audio in post. The added benefit is I could use the H1 to capture wild ambient audio to add to other videos. Thanks again!
I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.
Thanks! I really enjoyed your review! Informative and entertaining… a perfect combination… I’ve subscribed and set up notifications… looking forward to your next review! Cheers!😊
We share a severe illness called "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" I am looking for a herbal cure in a corner of Nakuru County in Kenya. But, seriously, this is the best RUclips video I have seen on the subject of audio recording. I am now confident I can capture audio. I have a lot of birds that sing around my house. I need that audio. I live a mile from the Nakuru National Park where there are all kinds of noisy creatures I need to record especially the alien one that cries at 2:00am. Thanks and say hello to your folks . Greetings from the bottom of the Great Rift Valley and the slopes of the (great?) Menengai crater/caldera.
Hey! Nice to meet you! Thanks for watching my video! I MUST know more about this alien creature that cries at 2am! And GAS is real and it’s terrible. Even when you get the thing you’re after it all starts again with a new thing. And you think that as soon as you get that last thing, you’ll be set. Except, it doesn’t ever go that way. Haha. It’s something new always! You’re in a very interesting part of the world! I’d love to hear your recordings! Thanks again! Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
Just got two of these, to accompany my old but trusty DR-40. I'm recording various vehicles from the cockpit with DR-40, and two H1n will record exterior sounds from the front, and rear of the vehicle. First house tests told me quite fast that H1n is simply not for recording quiet environments, preamps (or mics) are quite noisy even comparing to old DR-40, which is practically at the bottom of the field recorders noise test table. But hey, I will use them in loud environment, so I guess I made a right decision for low price, to cover multiple angles.
@@Pe11ePD hey. Yes indeed. Any Zoom H series is going to have noisy preamps. To get quiet preamps you’d have to venture into the F series. For me, I went with Sound Devices MixPre for crazy quiet preamps. But I still use the H1n for all kinds of louder recordings.
@@TheRecordist I already got my pick at Tascam Portacapture X6. Adjustable stereo field like on my DR-40, but 32bit float up to 140db, very quiet preamps, great display. All that I wanted in a handheld recorder. I don't like chasing mics for F series etc, I'm a sucker for handheld recorders with internal mics, as they are practical for my needs, and deliver GREAT sound for the type of recordings I do. When I get my hands on X6, I can finally do really quiet ambiances.
lol what a quirky presentation. I've had the H1 for 13 years and looking to upgrade, so this is helpful, thanks. Given the quality of your production I'm surprised you don't have more subs.
Nice review! Got this little fella last week, equipped it with 5k milliamp battery and went to record all kinds of stuff in my house :D Those electrets are pretty good for the price of the recorder!
Thanks very much! Yes it’s a good little recorder. So cheap for what it can do. I have both the original H1 and the H1n. I love them both. Thanks for watching!
First-time viewer, I think the Red version with the Red port is kind of an oversight. I appreciate this video, I forgot I had this recorder and need to capture audio from weddings this season. We dj a lot, and apparently, people want proof. Personally, I like the mystery when I pay someone a bunch of money for something I only plan to do once.
Wow, your style is great. Even though I have had the H1N forever and it was kind of a starting point for me, I watched your whole review because you are entertaining. I look forward to more.
Loved the video! Thank you so much! I just wanted to buy the h1n but now i stumbled across the h2n... do you think its worth it to invest or is the difference insignificant?
Quick question.. will I still get 24bit 48khz audio if I connect my Rode VideoMic Go ii to the Zoom H1n? And how should I connect it via usb c to micro usb or 3.5mm jack?
@@TheRecordist Ah perfect! I was worried that I wouldn't get the 24bit 48khz with a 3.5mm cable! thanks for the fast response and loved the video man I subbed :D
I own a Zoom H1 that I bought used in 2016 (Arrival and Eye In The Sky ago) and still use it albeit lately the body of the recorder has become quite sticky. So I am considering the H1n. Great review man! Thanks.
Haha. Awesome! It’s a great little recorder to have with you! The H1n is a bit fancier than the H1. Also the price is rather acceptable! Thanks for watching!
Not all H1s have the rubber coating that goes sticky.. my original one had the same problem.. but I bought a used H1 without it, just a normal plastic finish
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com Cheers!
Excellent review. Does anyone have experience using this to record band rehearsals? Drums, bass and everything. Looking for something simple to hit record on just to listen back to jams.
Wow I totally 💯 agree with you on “GAS “….. but mine happens to be Drums! I have this particular product for the same reason you said… “ just to have it “! I enjoyed this video and your presentation , thanks 🙏!
In the video at 2:25, I see version: 1.21 on the screen, is there a new firmware version? My says version: 1.19, I don't a system version 1.21 on the Zoom site for this model...?
Good eye! I don’t have an answer for you. It shipped that way. I went to see if it needed an firmware update and I found that the newest firmware had a smaller number than the one it says on my recorder. It makes no sense. It’s an error. There is no newer firmware update. You’re good. Haha.
I have been recording random crap since 1982. The original zoom H1 (1 AA battery) is the best recorder I have ever owned. I have an H4 also but it just collects dust. Seriously, they got it right the first time with the H1.
Years ago, this was my tool of choice for my qualitative research when I was a broke grad school student. Today, it is still my tool of choice for my qualitative research now that I'm a broke postgraduate student. I must admit, when I first received it in the mail I was taken aback at how cheap, fragile and plasticky it felt.... but it is still holding up just fine now!
More renditions of Drunken Sailor please! 🏴☠ I am a proud owner of a zoom H1n since ~2020ish and had no idea it could do that. Thanks for the great video!
Hello, Mr. Recordist! I'm 3:37 minutes into the video and I had to pause to tell you that you are a very charismatic fellow, and I wish all reviews were done as you do them. I will continue to watch the video now and finish this comment when I'm through. Ok, so I finished this review.. This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I've done some superficial digging and have seen that you only review audio things. WHY?!!? If I may give you my humble opinion in the form of a request (with no intention of telling you what you should do)... Please review other things too. Many things. Whatever you get your hands on. You've got a gift.
Hahaha. Well thank you very much! I really appreciate those kind words! My intention is to eventually make a living off of RUclips. One of the common bits of advice is to niche down. Which is what I’ve been doing. However, I am branching out into a few video related products. So who knows what the future might bring? Hopefully not a dead mouse left at my back porch. Cheers, man!
Amazing video, this is one of the videos where you don't even need to ask for likes or subscribers, because the content is so good you wanna like it. Btw, what is the omni clip mic set you were talking about? Can't seem to find it.
Hey thanks very much! Those are the Clippy mics. You can get them in stereo pairs that terminate in a single 3.5mm connector. Or singles. Or XLR. Here they are: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html
Very useful stuff indeed! Thanks man you rock By the way I'm still on the fence wether I should get a second hand Zoom h1n or the brand new H1e,,, which do you suggest? Is the H1e really more noisy?
Great! The H1e sounds the same as the H1n. If you have no use for the 32 bit recording, it’s not a necessary upgrade. Also, the H1e doesn’t record in MP3, in case that was something you cared about.
Hey, hey, - here I am, expecting a nerd, making a nerdy review. And what do I get - a guy with practical experience, with a blessed and sofisticated sense of humor, and a guy who sings a mean overdub harmony! - thanks for 21 minutes of enjoyment ( and yes, I also learned a lot of relevant stuff)
I like in this device that you can select 1.2V accu mode (eneloop pro aaa) in the settings. It can also power 24/7 using usb- cable and charger. These are uncommon in these stypid 2020+ years. In the 90s these things were normal.
I have auto record set to on at -24dB and pre record on as well. I can't get it to activate when talking loud enough to do so. I press the red record button thinking this would activate the auto record but all this does is activate regular recording. My goal is to record my dog whining while it is alone. Please explain in detail how to get my H1N to auto record as I'm needing it to. Thank you.
I wish I could attach photos here but apparently I cannot. I think you’re doing everything correctly, however when you press record, it will start recording because you’re handling the unit and causing noise and it picks up the noise and commences recording. Try setting it up as you did and hitting record, and then put it down and make sure there are no other sounds happening. Watch it. It will stop when it stops hearing sounds and start when sounds happen. This is what I think may be the issue with limited info. If that doesn’t work, try turning off pre-record. Here is the manual: www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_H1n_0.pdf Scroll down to the USING ADDITIONAL RECORDING FUNCTIONS section. Let me know if any of this helps. Cheers!
This is the way I want all my audio device reviews from now on

My gut instinct tells me putting your face in the thumbnail would help. To me your thumbnails make me feel like I’m about to watch an amateur RUclipsr, not a professional like you are. Sorry for being so harsh on your thumbnails but in my time watching RUclips it feels like that’s the only thing keeping you from being a top tier product reviewer. 👍👍
No no. That’s great advice. I hate doing thumbnails. I’m no good at it. No matter what I do. Perhaps I need to consult a pro. Thanks very much for your kind words!
Great review.. I was thinking of upgrading if for no other reason than GAS. Will be keeping now.. Hey - can you give me a link to the better quieter mic that you mentioned?
Hey thanks! I think you’re talking about these guys: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-294-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html#/83-plug_type-straight/203-microphone-em272z1

I liked how you explained it all, and I'm glad now that I bought an H1n
Excellent! Enjoy it! Cheers!
Have the same Recorder. I wanted to check for other opinions about it. Thanx for the review - totally agree with you. And I learn new things about the device :)
That’s fantastic! Thanks for letting me know!
11:55... sounds like the intro to a horror movie... That actually confused me and scared me a little xD
Hahaha really? That’s my family playing corn hole on the backyard. Hahaha
Now this is a great review video. The harmonies cracked me up, awesome!
Hahaha. Thanks! Cheers!
Incredible video. First video I've seen of yours. Very crisp video quality and audio and the set behind you is pleasant to they eye. I am convinced on purchasing the H1n now
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for the kind words! And enjoy your new H1n!
@@TheRecordist thank you! I upgraded cameras from a Nikon D3400 to a Fujifilm XT-4 and I have a Rode reporter on the way too
@@spencerbrinton1397 woo hoo! Toys!
That’ll work just fine! Just think about wind protection. Cheers!
Yep. You’re right about that. It’s a great and low-cost unit!
I had to Google dead 🐈 😂.
such a great review and very well versed! glad to have stumbled upon such a channel.
Hey thank you very much! I appreciate your wonderful comment! It made my day! Cheers!
Superb review! Thorough and engaging. You have a great voice and a sharp wit

Haha. Thanks! I’m pretty new. Only about a year or so in to it. Thanks for watching!
Haha. Of course! It’s a handy little recorder and the more you work with it, the more you can master it (including its limitations).
Cheers!
Totally entertaining! Thanks for the refreshing ending thoughts!
Haha. You’re welcome! Cheers!
Needed this advice at the end - thanks!
Hey no worries! Cheers!
Wonderful video! Ready to buy the zoom h1n for making videos.
Glad to hear it! I think you’ll enjoy it! Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
Wow, your style is great. Even though I have had the H1N forever and it was kind of a starting point for me, I watched your whole review because you are entertaining. I look forward to more.
Hey thanks so much! I appreciate you staying and watching! Cheers!
Loved the video! Thank you so much!
I just wanted to buy the h1n but now i stumbled across the h2n... do you think its worth it to invest or is the difference insignificant?
I don’t personally like the H2n. In my opinion it’s the worst of the H series.
Quick question.. will I still get 24bit 48khz audio if I connect my Rode VideoMic Go ii to the Zoom H1n? And how should I connect it via usb c to micro usb or 3.5mm jack?
Hey there. Yes, you’ll still get 24/48 with the Røde videomic go ii, and you’ll have to use the 3.5mm input. Cheers!
@@TheRecordist Ah perfect! I was worried that I wouldn't get the 24bit 48khz with a 3.5mm cable! thanks for the fast response and loved the video man I subbed :D
@@NINETY-97-SEVEN hey thanks so much!
30 seconds in, and you've earned a new sub.
Why thank you kindly, Steven! Cheers!
500 subscribers! Love the informative videos and the way you present it! Digging the vibe! 😂
Hey thanks so much! I'm excited to hit 500 subs organically! I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching!
Great video ! Are there any specific clip on / lav mics that you'd reccomend for the zoom h1n ?
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com

instant likeable persona and a very informative review 😊

Haha. Thank you very much!
Awesome review, just bought this for some music classes.
Hey thanks! Enjoy it!
Great review!
Is it possible to record audio from the stereo mics and also a plug-in lavier mic at the same time? Thanks
Thanks! Unfortunately no. Not on the H1n. The H5 yes. Sorry about that!
@@TheRecordist thanks for the quick reply!

Excellent review. Does anyone have experience using this to record band rehearsals? Drums, bass and everything. Looking for something simple to hit record on just to listen back to jams.
Oh yes. This should work great for that!
I have 64gb card inside of H1N and it works😊
Haha. Really? Well then, let me know if you have any issues down the road with that. Because that’s a game changer if so!
What type of card?

Hey thanks so much, Geri! I’m glad it helped you!
Haha.
Brilliant video - thank you. From a fellow GAS sufferer…
Haha. Thanks so much! Cheers!
I have been recording random crap since 1982. The original zoom H1 (1 AA battery) is the best recorder I have ever owned. I have an H4 also but it just collects dust. Seriously, they got it right the first time with the H1.
I have the original H1 as well! Can’t believe it but I agree with you!
How does it perform recording a live band in a rehearsal studio?
Depending on how loud it gets, it might do pretty good. As good as any stereo recording can get, as opposed to separate tracks.
That field recording under the bridge reminds me of a track by John Fahey.
Haha. Oh yeah? Which one?
You're absolutely hilarious. This is a great review
Haha. Thanks so much!
13:45 That's amazing....

Hahaha. Yes indeed. It’s a cheap-ass unit but somehow keeps going! I agree. Strange!
Fantastic review! Love your style!
I appreciate that, Jimmy! Cheers!
More renditions of Drunken Sailor please! 🏴☠ I am a proud owner of a zoom H1n since ~2020ish and had no idea it could do that. Thanks for the great video!
Hahaha. I’ll try! Yes. A great little unit! Thanks for watching!
Hello, Mr.
Thanks man you rock
By the way I'm still on the fence wether I should get a second hand Zoom h1n or the brand new H1e,,, which do you suggest? Is the H1e really more noisy?
Great! The H1e sounds the same as the H1n. If you have no use for the 32 bit recording, it’s not a necessary upgrade.
Also, the H1e doesn’t record in MP3, in case that was something you cared about.
I clicked follow because of the “inception and iron man 2 ago” comment 😂😂 but thanks for a good review!!!
Hahaha. I do that in most of my videos. Thanks for watching and subbing! Cheers!
I still use the H1 and it sounds great, I dont think anyone really needs the latest thing, stick with what sounds good
Yep. The original H1 is just fine. I also still use the original for many things. If it works, that’s all that matters.
Oh haha. Thanks so much! I appreciate the compliments! Cheers!
Best video of zoom h1n on youtube 😂❤❤❤
Hey thanks, Stefan! I really appreciate that!
Woo hoo! Thanks! Cheers!
I like in this device that you can select 1.2V accu mode (eneloop pro aaa) in the settings. It can also power 24/7 using usb- cable and charger. These are uncommon in these stypid 2020+ years. In the 90s these things were normal.
Agreed. It’s pretty awesome!
Beautiful video, nicely put together. 👍
Hey thanks so much!
what canal??
For that video I was visiting the Welland Canal in Ontario, Canada.
YOU ARE SUPER, I LOVE IT :D
Haha. Thanks! Cheers!
Here is the manual: www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_H1n_0.pdf
Scroll down to the USING ADDITIONAL RECORDING FUNCTIONS section.
Let me know if any of this helps. Cheers!
