This is the way I want all my audio device reviews from now on
Hahaha. Well thank you very much, John! Thanks for watching!
Oh dear me, I have the same sickness as you. I love gear. I have gear i haven't used yet, but i will before 2050.
Hahaha. I have some gear sitting here right now still in their unopened boxes. Haha. GAS… why?? Haha
I don't know why, but this review just put a smile on my face. Thanks man! Super informative too.
Oh wonderful! Thanks so much for watching!
What a pleasant review to watch. First video I watched of your and I was throughly engaged throughout. Love all the movie and pop culture references .
Hey thanks so much! I sometimes wonder if there are other nerds out there that appreciate the same things! I’m glad you’re one of them! Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed your humor sprinkled in as well as how organized the description is with the information and products used in the video
Very helpful
Thank you!
Thank you very much! Cheers!
What a wonderful video. It's professional, informative and succinct. I look forward to watching more of your content!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind comment! Thanks for watching!
This has been such a great recorder for me to learn audio. It has a million uses! I enjoy your content and humor!
Thanks so much! It’s a great starter and always great to have with you! Thanks for watching!
I am exactly 1min 42 sec in and had to pause to because I'm giggling so much. I came here because I am looking for more affordable audio set-ups and aside from the advice you're about to give I am absolutely in stitches laughing at the film premier 'time stamps' and the Scottish 'lets take a bloody look at it'. Even if I don't get this recorder I'm so glad to have found your channel!
Hahaha. Well thanks! I’m love making people laugh! Cheers!
Just bought this, because of you. Thanks for such a great review!
That’s great! And you’re very welcome!
Great video. I'm just starting out on the RUclips journey and bought this to help with the audio quality of my motoring video's, travelling around Europe in our open top car... Your review has really helped and I'm now looking forward to watching more from you. Thanks
Oh that’s wonderful and so cool! I’m glad I could help! Cheers!
I am glad I found your channel. I really like your reviews. Yours is probably my favorite gear review site on the web.
Hey thanks, Ronald! That’s very kind of you to say! I really appreciate it! Cheers!
Thanks! I really enjoyed your review! Informative and entertaining… a perfect combination… I’ve subscribed and set up notifications… looking forward to your next review! Cheers!😊
Hey thanks so much! Glad to have you aboard! Cheers!
such a great review and very well versed! glad to have stumbled upon such a channel.
Hey thank you very much! I appreciate your wonderful comment! It made my day! Cheers!
Awesome! Thank you so much for this! I love your quirkiness and super easy to understand review and it helps so much for me to decide!
You are so welcome! And thanks for the kind words!
500 subscribers! Love the informative videos and the way you present it! Digging the vibe! 😂
Hey thanks so much! I'm excited to hit 500 subs organically! I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching!
Now this is a great review video. The harmonies cracked me up, awesome!
Hahaha. Thanks! Cheers!
Dude. Absolutely love your lighting setup!
Oh. Thanks so much, man! It’s a work in progress. I think I filmed this at the end of 2022. My lighting and camera gear has been upgraded since. But I generally keep it all the same way. One key light, a backlight, a bounce board, and some cool practicals in the back there. Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
@@TheRecordist I really dig the flared lighting in the upper corner of this video in particular. For whatever reason, the whole ensemble looked extra theatrical.
Looking for a review of the H1n - found this. Looked no further and subbed straight away! Keep rocking!
Haha. Thanks so much, man! I appreciate that! Cheers!
Needed this advice at the end - thanks!
Hey no worries! Cheers!
I love this Mic but you've inspired me to carry it everywhere now - thanks!
Haha. Excellent! You never know when it’ll come in handy! Thanks for watching!
Hi! This is the first time I came across your channel and you had me hooked in the first 30 seconds. Amazing, not the mics, but you, Sir.
Well thank you very much! I really appreciate that! What a compliment! Cheers!
Totally entertaining! Thanks for the refreshing ending thoughts!
Haha. You’re welcome! Cheers!
Wow, your style is great. Even though I have had the H1N forever and it was kind of a starting point for me, I watched your whole review because you are entertaining. I look forward to more.
Hey thanks so much! I appreciate you staying and watching! Cheers!
❤ I muchly appreciated the humour(yes, spelt with a 'u")and even more the fact that you used the words wind and gas in a technical video. I too love the Zoom H1(I have 3)I have no idea why other than they make me happy( I am a lighting/grip guy). Too infinity and beyond. May the good guys always win. Bless your cotton socks.
Hahah. Well thank you so much! I’ve got two Zoom H1’s myself! Well-one is the H1 and the other is the H1n. Haha. Pocket stereo recorders should make everyone happy! That’s what I say. Haha. Thanks for stopping by and watching my humble video!
Clicked on yet another review of my prospective purchase but didn't anticipate I'd be laughing all the way through, so I subscribed. A good review and entertaining. Just what you need.
Hey thanks so much! Cheers!
Incredible video. First video I've seen of yours. Very crisp video quality and audio and the set behind you is pleasant to they eye. I am convinced on purchasing the H1n now
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for the kind words! And enjoy your new H1n!
@@TheRecordist thank you! I upgraded cameras from a Nikon D3400 to a Fujifilm XT-4 and I have a Rode reporter on the way too
@@spencerbrinton1397 woo hoo! Toys!
Fantastic review! Love your style!
I appreciate that, Jimmy! Cheers!
I have ordered a Zoom H1n that is arriving tomorrow and can't wait to get my hands on to it. Perhaps, I too have GAS like someone mentioned in these comments somewhere, but I didn't know I wanted this little beast until I realized the phone recorder can only do so much. Thanks for this authentic and humorous review @TheRecordist! :)
- Arun
Fantastic! And you’re very welcome! Enjoy your new toy! Woo hoo!
Best review ever :) Thank you for this video it was educational and interesting. I had a Zoom H1n and traded it for the H4n Pro but I soon went back to using the H1n just because of the size, it's always with me!
Me too! I always have the H1n with me. You never know! Thanks for the wonderful comment!
Subscribed. I needed this review, thanks a lot
Hey thanks so much, Geri! I’m glad it helped you!
watched two of your Zoom reviews with a conclusion that I love your videos
Haha. Why thank you! Much appreciated!
Beautiful video, nicely put together. 👍
Hey thanks so much!

Hey thanks so much! Much appreciated! Cheers!
good video man, explained very well and with a touch of humour 😆 love it , keep it up !
Haha. Thanks so much! Cheers!
Wonderful video! Ready to buy the zoom h1n for making videos.
Glad to hear it! I think you’ll enjoy it! Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
Woo hoo! Thanks! Cheers!
Superb review! Thorough and engaging. You have a great voice and a sharp wit
Thanks very much! Cheers!
Have the same Recorder. I wanted to check for other opinions about it. Thanx for the review - totally agree with you. And I learn new things about the device :)
That’s fantastic! Thanks for letting me know!
This is how you do a RUclips video. Informative, original and funny. Man a have a laugh and learn at the same time, awesome!!!
Why thank you kindly! I appreciate your wonderful comment! Cheers!
you are amazing! you have a new fan at first view!
Haha. Thank you very much!
Thanks! Was very informative
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I liked how you explained it all, and I'm glad now that I bought an H1n
Excellent! Enjoy it! Cheers!
Great video! Very infomative and helpful! Thank you. Have you ever used this recorder with Dragon or any other voice recognition software?
Hey thanks! No, I have no experience with Dragon at all. My experience with dictation is Siri and that’s about it. Sorry about that.
Thank you very much for this very informative review.
You’re very welcome! Cheers!
YOU ARE SUPER, I LOVE IT :D
Haha. Thanks! Cheers!
thank you for making this video.❤🔥
You’re very welcome!
Awesome review, just bought this for some music classes.
Hey thanks! Enjoy it!
Thank you, man! You are brilliant!
Haha. Nah. Just some guy. Haha. Thanks for watching!
I have used the Zoom H1n for many years to record lectures and found it invaluable. The only problem with the old one I found was that if I left a battery in it the battery would go flat.
You’re right. But what a great little unit for little cost! Thanks for watching!
Great review.. I was thinking of upgrading if for no other reason than GAS. Will be keeping now.. Hey - can you give me a link to the better quieter mic that you mentioned?
Hey thanks! I think you’re talking about these guys: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-294-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html#/83-plug_type-straight/203-microphone-em272z1

I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. I can mount it on my camera cage and plug it into the camera and either use that audio or synch the H1 audio in post. The added benefit is I could use the H1 to capture wild ambient audio to add to other videos. Thanks again!
That’ll work just fine! Just think about wind protection. Cheers!
Great video! Great personality!
Wow. I really appreciate that, Yogesh! Thanks!
Nice review! Got this little fella last week, equipped it with 5k milliamp battery and went to record all kinds of stuff in my house :D Those electrets are pretty good for the price of the recorder!
Thanks very much! Yes it’s a good little recorder. So cheap for what it can do. I have both the original H1 and the H1n. I love them both. Thanks for watching!
awesome , great video thanks for making it .
Hey thanks! Cheers!
I own a Zoom H1 that I bought used in 2016 (Arrival and Eye In The Sky ago) and still use it albeit lately the body of the recorder has become quite sticky. So I am considering the H1n. Great review man! Thanks.
Haha. Awesome! It’s a great little recorder to have with you! The H1n is a bit fancier than the H1. Also the price is rather acceptable! Thanks for watching!
Not all H1s have the rubber coating that goes sticky.. my original one had the same problem.. but I bought a used H1 without it, just a normal plastic finish
Love it. Thank you.
You’re very welcome!
Thank you. I'm thinking of buying it soon
Fantastic! Thanks for watching!
I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.
Yep. You’re right about that. It’s a great and low-cost unit!
I had to Google dead 🐈 😂.
Here is a wonderful guy, knowledgeable, reasonable and professional, what a great review!
"Was the dreams to thousands of audio people just 20 years ago" A lot of people fail to realise that.
Oh haha. Thank you so much! So appreciated!
Oh man, you're funny! Loved the review. Just picked up an h1n. Had an h1 years ago. These devices are great for my needs and won't break the bank.
Haha. Thanks! And you are correct!
Great video ! Are there any specific clip on / lav mics that you'd reccomend for the zoom h1n ?
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com
Cheers!
Great review and awesome video thanks!
I've been on the fence about this for a bit now...I'm back in a band after a long while out of the life, I been using an iPhone to record our noize making but, it cuts out and sounds are (bad)funky. In a practice space, full band with loud drums, bass and a couple guitars...would this be of any use at all? I just want something for review not tracks to edit, I just wanna see how much we suck or not.
Would this work for that?
Hey! Yes. I think this will work for what you’re after. It can take some high SPL. It’ll sound like it sounds when in the room. Placement will be key for a balanced sound since there aren’t separate tracks to mic everything.
I think it’ll work great. Cheers!
My H1n turned up this morning. I’ve rewatched the tutorial as it’s the best one that I’ve found. This recorder will be with me at all times, and I will have things covered while I build up my H5 system. I’ve always suffered with GAS, the last thing that I got into was a Sony portable DAT recorder that I finally got round to buying. I also suffer from UAS (Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome) but that’s another story. Love the videos, cheers from a slightly damp U.K. 👍
Haha. Woo hoo GAS and UAS unite!
I play a little uke as well. I have a cheap one but I’d like to start collecting others. That’s fantastic!
Thanks for watching!
Great review 🙂👌
Needed a recorder to record vinyl, was looking at your video, and having GAS myself I ended up with the H6.. 😂
Hahaha. Well that’s some serious GAS! Hahaha.
lol what a quirky presentation. I've had the H1 for 13 years and looking to upgrade, so this is helpful, thanks. Given the quality of your production I'm surprised you don't have more subs.
Haha. Thanks! I’m pretty new. Only about a year or so in to it. Thanks for watching!
love you! 😀
Well thank you! Love you too!
You're absolutely hilarious. This is a great review
Haha. Thanks so much!
Thank you and take care
You’re welcome! Cheers!
The best review
Thank you kindly!
30 seconds in, and you've earned a new sub.
Why thank you kindly, Steven! Cheers!
More renditions of Drunken Sailor please! 🏴☠ I am a proud owner of a zoom H1n since ~2020ish and had no idea it could do that. Thanks for the great video!
Hahaha. I’ll try! Yes. A great little unit! Thanks for watching!
Audio gear is indeed special and GAS is very, very real, any new personal sound kit gets smuggled into the house then labelled as work gear if my contraband is intercepted and inspected by the old trouble and strife 😂 My little H1n doesn’t get much use these days as my work flow is now 32bit float but it did make me a Zoom user as I acquired better audio equipment. It’s great value kit 👍
Another great review 👍
Hey thanks! I know all about the smuggling. 😉
I also am a 32 bit guy. I use the Sound Devices MixPre 3 II for my serious stuff. But for sound collecting (which is all the time in life), I always have the H1 handy. It’s with me daily. Thanks for watching!
I just bought 1 and im about to binge watch all your videos, im in the market for a durable backpack for all my gear im starting to collect, hopefully you have a video on backpacks
Haha. I do not yet have a video on backpacks. I do have a couple on sound bags. But backpacks are a great idea!
If you’re in the market for the absolute best audio/video backpack ever, check out the LowePro ProTactic 450 AWII: geni.us/QVScu
@@TheRecordist thank you
Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.
That’s a great solution! Thanks for sharing that! Cheers!
Wow I totally 💯 agree with you on “GAS “….. but mine happens to be Drums! I have this particular product for the same reason you said… “ just to have it “! I enjoyed this video and your presentation , thanks 🙏!
Hey thanks very much! I appreciate the comment! Cheers!
Thanks!
Hey thank you very much! Cheers!
Thanks for the review!
If I record from my Daw into the recorder via a cable can I choose multiple quality formats like bitrate for mp3 and sample rate /bitrate for wav?
Yes. Of course. But you’re limited to 16/24 bits and 44.1/48kHz sample rate. I’m not sure about MP3.
Thank you ❤
You’re very welcome!
Brilliant video - thank you. From a fellow GAS sufferer…
Haha. Thanks so much! Cheers!
First-time viewer, I think the Red version with the Red port is kind of an oversight. I appreciate this video, I forgot I had this recorder and need to capture audio from weddings this season. We dj a lot, and apparently, people want proof. Personally, I like the mystery when I pay someone a bunch of money for something I only plan to do once.
Haha. Of course! It’s a handy little recorder and the more you work with it, the more you can master it (including its limitations).
Cheers!
If you're starting out into recording sound or music, then yes - either the H1n or H2n are good beginner's tools (get their accessories, too).
Of course!
enjoyed this. Very helpful. What is the omni mic you mentioned - the alternative to the onboard mic? Thanks!
Hi Shane. Thanks so much! The mic mentioned is the Clippy mic. Here is a stereo set version, terminated in a 3.5mm connector:
micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html
@@TheRecordist Thanks a ton. Good luck with your channel. Great presentation and content.
@@shanekrause100 thanks, Shane!
Great video thanks. Would the H1n be suitable to record a choir containing about 30 voices and what settings would be best. Thanks
Hi there. Thanks! Yes, the H1n would work well for a choir. I’d set it to 24 bit, 48kHz, and then have the peaks hitting at -12 to -6dB. Be sure to mount the device center and on a stand. Do not touch the unit during recording since it’s sensitive.
Should work pretty good!
We share a severe illness called "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" I am looking for a herbal cure in a corner of Nakuru County in Kenya.
But, seriously, this is the best RUclips video I have seen on the subject of audio recording. I am now confident I can capture audio. I have a lot of birds that sing around my house. I need that audio. I live a mile from the Nakuru National Park where there are all kinds of noisy creatures I need to record especially the alien one that cries at 2:00am. Thanks and say hello to your folks . Greetings from the bottom of the Great Rift Valley and the slopes of the (great?) Menengai crater/caldera.
Hey! Nice to meet you! Thanks for watching my video! I MUST know more about this alien creature that cries at 2am!
And GAS is real and it’s terrible. Even when you get the thing you’re after it all starts again with a new thing. And you think that as soon as you get that last thing, you’ll be set. Except, it doesn’t ever go that way. Haha. It’s something new always!
You’re in a very interesting part of the world! I’d love to hear your recordings!
Thanks again! Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
I do professional Opera recordings using condenser microphones, and you know what? Sometimes I just stick with my h1n for how easy, versatile and easy to go it is. I have to do post production anyway, and this device does the job pretty well.
It’s amazing for the price eh?
@@TheRecordist it's out of my mind how extremely efficient it can be for less than 100 bucks.
@@BaritoneDeLaTorre agreed! I have the original H1 and then I picked up the H1n. Love those little guys. I carry at least one everywhere I go!
Thank you!

Hahaha. I do that in most of my videos. Thanks for watching and subbing! Cheers!
Best video of zoom h1n on youtube 😂❤❤❤
Hey thanks, Stefan! I really appreciate that!
Great video, If I record my keyboard via the line, is there an option to turn off the mic so that only the line in is being recorded?
Thanks! And yes. On the H1n when you plug into the mic input, the stereo. X/Y mics turn off.
Great stuff as always, thanks. Quick question. I have one of these for recording the sounds of automobile engine noises. I am looking for an affordable lav mic that I can tape to the rear bumper and connect to the H1n sitting in the trunk. Any recommendations on a good, affordable lav mic for the purpose?

Hi, I haven't been using an external audio recorder before and google leads me here.
Does H1n suitable for recording ambience sounds? Like waves, crickets, etc. Secondly, from your experience how long does a Ni-MH last? And of course, most importantly, how quickly does it start?
Thanks.
Hey Halim! Yes. The H1n is great for ambient sounds. But if the sounds are very quiet, you might get some noise. The preamps are a bit noisy for very quiet sources. But there are many recorders that are much noisier.
As for battery life, I get about 6-8 hours at 24 bit, 48kHz. You can get up to 10 at 16 but 44.1kHz.
Hope this helps!
Years ago, this was my tool of choice for my qualitative research when I was a broke grad school student. Today, it is still my tool of choice for my qualitative research now that I'm a broke postgraduate student. I must admit, when I first received it in the mail I was taken aback at how cheap, fragile and plasticky it felt.... but it is still holding up just fine now!
Hahaha. Yes indeed. It’s a cheap-ass unit but somehow keeps going! I agree. Strange!
I love this guy XD
Haha. Thank you very much! Cheers!
Excellent review. Does anyone have experience using this to record band rehearsals? Drums, bass and everything. Looking for something simple to hit record on just to listen back to jams.
Oh yes. This should work great for that!
Thank you kindly for the Review.
I'm looking for a Digital Voice Recorder and still pondering the Zoom H1n in 2024 or if I can find something similar that's better for the same reasonable price.
Hey. No worries. I would say that if you can find the Zoom H1n, grab it. It’s a great little recorder. Not the best but the best for the money. That model has now been replaced with the H1essential which is 32 bits and less options.
