Not impressed... when you hold down the "option" button this comes up with 4 new things you can choose from. What do all these mean " AUTO REC, PRE REC, SELF TIMER, SOUND MARKER"?? Also what about the "settings"option (press trash can button while turning on the device at the exact same time) this open you to battery life, SD card life, LCD, date/time, language, etc.
I mean... wow... that's really everything I needed to know. You should be hired to do beginner's guides regularly. The views were all very clear, each word was purposeful, and you explained just enough to demonstrate why to use a certain setting, without overextending the video. I've barely started using my H1n, and I feel a lot more confident diving in now. Much appreciated.
Before viewing this video I was lost in terms of how to specicially set the recorder for my purpose. I want to record the folk songs that I write, sing, and play on an acoustic guitar. Your very insructions were perfect on how to do this on my H1n. Thank you!!
Excellent tutorial! Your structuring, your easily understandable explanations, your demonstrations, timing, video and audio quality, even spoken english ( my guess is that you are German 😊). I see probably 4 - 500 tutorials a year, for professionalism, this is the best! Than you! ( questions follow in separate comment)
you probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I love any help you can offer me
@Kevin Boone i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I got this today to use for my university studies; I'm really interested in doing something with 'found sounds', but have never made any attempt to record before, so this tutorial helped so much!
Thank you Julian, you covered all that is to know about this device. Your calmness and clear voice automatically improved the quality of audio here. Thumbs UP
I bought the H12 several months ago as I wanted something small, good quality, and simple to use. So this recorder was recommended and it's a great choice. I use it for recording interviews that I use to write stories from. Your video has been most helpful because I didn't know anything about what the features really meant...so having you explain them has been very helpful. Thanks very much.
My German is 55 years rusty, but here goes: Von ein Amerikaner... Du bist ein fantastisch lehrer! I see others here feel the same. I, too, wish all my beginners guides were done by you. Danke zer!
I work in Community Radio, our volunteers use Zoom recorders. This video, I found, was really engaging, informative, very helpful .... thanks. I will be directing our volunteers who have the Zoom h1n, to this amazing tutorial. Will you be covering h2, and h2n also. Best wishes, Steve, Bristol, UK.
So I received my H1n recorder about a week ago. Read the manual, which was pretty basic, and went out to capture different street sounds. It was hit and miss. By watching your video, it showed me some of what I was doing wrong and built on some of the stuff I got right. Good tutorial.
I've just bought one and having a lot of fun with it. Thanks for your very clear and helpful explanation. I'm also particularly interested in using the multi track facility.
I just got this recording device and it didn't seem the most intuitive. I looked through the manual and it didn't help much. I searched on RUclips and chanced upon this video. I think Zoom should consider paying royalties to Julian for teaching their consumers how to use the mic. It's truly the manual that should have come with the H1n.
Just got one today for a wedding shoot I have tomorrow. Went from not knowing anything about how to use the H1n to feeling like a pro after watching this video. Thank you!

I do wrist watch reviews and tutorials on how to use all the functions! As one person who helps people start using something to another, you did an INCREDIBLE JOB!!! So clear, easy to understand and you covered pretty much everything I wanted to know!! I just got the Zoom H1N after a phone I used as a microphone died on me!!
Hi Julian! It would be so helpful if you could give a piece of advice on the H1n setting for recording nature sounds like sea/waves, rain, rives, birds, etc. Thank you and I love your work!
My man - just got my H1n and had no idea how to operate it correctly. Your video was the first one I played on this piece of equipment. As a result of your tutorial I have a foundation now and can move forward in the world of Interviews and vloging. Thank you so much!
Hey Julian - thanks for taking the time and effort to produce this EXCELLENT, easy to understand and follow, video tutorial on the setup and use of the H1n. I recently purchase the H1n and currently awaiting its arrival. Although I'm tech savvy, your presentation will make it easy for me to use the unit from the box. Keep up the good work! p.s. the guitar sounded GREAT!

I just ordered this recorder for our motorcycle travel vlog channel. This is a great tutorial on using it as I am new to it and pretty much clueless. Thanks for putting this together, it is appreciated.

Julian, thank you for your video it was very useful. Wanted to ask about the best settings for one on one interview in a documentary using the Zoom h1n for k/bit and having the lo cut/limiter/auto level on?
I just set my mic up yesterday and tried using it for the first time following the directions of the manual. FAILED hard!!! After happening across and watching this video, I realize I did not set it up properly and didn't understand what certain settings were for. I am excited to go back and set it up properly so that I can start recording great audio. GREAT TUTORIAL Julian!!! This video really should be linked to their website and in the manual.

I just used my new h1n on my android sky and a android a502DL( much cheaper phone) and it records really well. 5 months late but in case you did not find out yet, there you go. : )
Great guide to a great unit .I find the limiter will only raise the noise floor if you set your gain too high , but the auto level famously will duck and dive all over the place ,that ,as you say, is best left off
Thank you. The first time I recorded I didn't press audio or Autolevel (not sure which) so no sound came out. I tried again following your instructions and all was well. In fact it's so sensitive it picks up the slightest bit of handling but great quality. As a pianist, I can now record accompaniments for my choir which will enable me to conduct rather than play piano.
thank you. you did a very good job in explaining how this works. i'm thinking there should be a youtube school with no commercials. yesterday i learned more about electric motors from a 10 minute tutorial than i learned from making an motor in electrical systems class many years ago. these walkthroughs explain way more in a brief time than instruction manuals. thank you. you helped a lot! very clear and concise. i had never even know what a low pass filter was. now i know. the addition of explaining things like what a low pass filter is really helps.
Thanks for the clear overview. I just bought 6 of these for my music teachers for use with their ensembles. Now I can send them this instead of making one of my own for them - thanks!
A really great, to the point, easy to understand guide. Big thank you! One note I would mention that caught me out, I don't think it can handle SD cards larger than 32GB. I had a hard to finding a card that small in my collection, this might help someone order both together.
I really appreciate this video. I have never used an audio recorder before and bought this one really quickly - I didn't have time to do much research beforehand. Your video has given me the confidence to get out there and use it! Thanks so much Julian! x
Thanks so much. I was curious to give the H1N a try but intimidated by the 71 page manual. Your video has made me much more confident about having a go.
