Thanks for the info , just got my h1n for field recording and i wasn't happy with the result ! Saw your vid and i will give another try tomorrow ! Happy monetization soon ! 😊 8 subs to go !! subbed !
Generally good tips. You've got the filter freqs backwards tho. 80 Hz is lower than 120 Hz and so on. You're cutting off the low end of that, below that level, because it's usually just bassy rumble. I'd love to hear more about great ways to position the mike tho, and how you can manipulate rec vol and subject proximity to mitigate ambient room or environment noise.
Couple of questions... - Why using low cut on the recorder when you can do it in post? Can recorder actually save the recording better than doing it via EQ in the post? - Why -15 to -12db is a golden ground? I was always aiming between -12 and -6gb, trying to put loudest sounds around -6db. H1n having pretty loud preamp noise, if you are recording quieter ambiances, being closer to 0db will result in less noise in the final recording. If you record at -15db on average, and bring the gain up in post, you will amplify the noise. I'm strictly referring to recording situations when you can get -6db on average when using mic gain at 5-6.
Hi Jake! Thanks for all of your excellent vids! We save so much time by listening to what you already know! Hey, can I set up a voice-activated on/off for the Zoom H1n? Thanks!
I noticed you have a considerable amount of wind noise in the intro segment by the river. Were you using a windscreen and/or lo-cut filter in that location or was the wind exceedingly strong and what windscreen were you using if any?
Well for this video I was using the Boya BY-MM1 Shotgun Microphone and I had the deadcat that comes with it on the mic. The wind was pretty strong that day so that's why I had some noise at the intro.
@@ivotouart No problem. Yeah I've noticed that the shotgun mic I use isn't as good as the H1N at blocking out wind noise. I've rarely had issues with the H1N for wind noise. And thank you!
This is exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks for the info. I was thinking on getting the H1N, but I didn’t know what microphone I should get. I think I’ll try that Boya BY MM1 shotgun mic for sure. Could you still use the Boya to record “background noise” or would that depend on the H1N settings? I also wanted to record sound effects and naturally occuring noises like people chatting in a coffee shop or city noise in downtown. Do you have any recommendations?
So, for the "background noise" if you're using the Boya BY MM1 hooked up to the Zoom H1N that should work as background noise. You'd just have to adjust the gain dial on the Zoom because you'd be using that as the pre-amp so that's how you would control the volume of the Boya. For sound effects and natural occuring noises the Zoom H1N should be able to handle those as well. I've used it to record sound effects in the past like footsteps, camera shutter, and many other things. Hope that helps!
I bought the H1n to Velcro to the back of my electric fiddle to record directly. I like to move around ;) Bonus, it’ll effortlessly serve as a USB interface to add the other instruments … and it’s a mic worthy of sampling cat trills… Forget that this digital deck weighs barely an ounce WITH batteries.
Bro , suppose i am taking some yoga class 5 feet away and if i keep it with camera on some stand . Will it be able to pick my voice easily ? And In untreated room , will it be able to remove the echo background noise ? Is it a good option
I'm sorry I don't have a good answer for that question. I can tell you it's really great at picking up audio, but for that specific situation I'm not so sure
Not really any setting tips. Just make sure that your gain is set to where you're not peaking your audio. That's basically the main thing to worry about. All the other fx and filters could be added in post if you really needed them
Probably not because if you really wanted to you can take out any low frequencies in post. Honestly you could do that all the time instead of using the lo-cut filter if you wanted to.
I suspect that Jake grew up close to where I grew up. I say things like find it “rate here” instead of “right here”. I also commonly say “you guys” instead of “you” or “you all” even though I know my audience in not just guys.
That's funny that you noticed that because to me I feel like I don't have an accent or anything but to others I'm sure it sounds like I'm from the north😂
It's probably because of the SD card size. You might be maxing out it's capacity. However I think the largest SD card the Zoom H1N takes is 32 or 64 gigabytes. So you are limited to a specific recording time.
2:30 Know your frequencies....How is 80Hz a higher frequency than 120Hz or as you say even "lower ....160Hz....??? Frequency is as the numbers....The lower the number, the lower the frequency, not the other way around...
I received mine today because i got it cheap but the you forgot the best tip..... and that is a piece of tape over the volume buttons on the side because they are like a rattle snake.
@@JakeBorowski15 from what I've understood so far it has to do with the battery settings - it looks like the settings must be on "alkaline" and not on "lithium" (haven't tried that, but unrelated sources - fb group, reddit - mentioned it as a possible problem and suggest that as a fix)

Yeah I might have to make a part 2🤷♂️
Just fyi - 80Hz is lower than 120Hz which is lower than 180Hz. You have it backwards when you talk about the LoCut filter. Nice vid, though.

I'd say that's the best possible setup with the zoom H1N. Cool setup!
what kind of mic, can i ask? i worry about the input gain needed by my dynamic mic

80hz is lowest, 160hz is highest cut on this device. Not the other way around. You misunderstand hz backwards.

hi jake , is this mic better than carotid mics in 70 dollars range .
Yes I believe it is mainly because you could use it for so many different things. It's very versatile and just an overall great mic!
