i use recordings in my music which i guess can be considered field recordings, but i’ll leave in audible conversations and you can even here parts of songs if you know what you’re listening for 😅 most of the talking is relatives and family so i feel like it’s fine, but i also record in nature and i like to leave in sounds from me walking around
Hello, I'm a sound engineering student and just wanted to offer my thanks and support to your channel for all the great tips and tricks! Very inspirational.
Not having a good system for archiving and keeping track of my recordings was another big mistake. Thankfully I fixed it, patiently went through the entirity of my recordings folder, trimmed, wrote descriptions and renamed every sound, and put it all into a sound library (in SoundQ, although I need to check out Soundly as well since it looks more developed and better overall), while also making a mirror backup of all my recordings raw and unedited. It only took about a year.. Now I diligently try to properly organize all new sounds after each recording session.
I had a recording job way back when. Had everything, I thought. After setting all up, the last thing was to thread the tape and begin the taping. The only problem was that I forgot the tape! I had to run to the nearest store and get what ever they had! That was over 40 years ago, never forgot that again.
The low profile kit is a great idea. I always find myself in situations where my bag, headphones and blimp are a bit overkill and attract unwanted attention.
Sometimes weird looks are unavoidable, wandering around with my Soma Ether I'm pointing it all kinds of random things and touching it to every piece of metal in reach, to some degree I suppose you just have to embrace the weird
One really good advice I got from my field recordists is take a photo (with your phone) of all your sound locations. When I started it took a while to figure our that my XLR cables were inverted when recording in MS. Gladly on most of my takes I did not convert them while recording so I can switch L-R in post.
That is true. If you use your phone you can find the location easily with Google Maps. Switching LR happened to me too :) Colour tape helps in that case.
I already did a lot of mistakes 😂😂. Jacket was last one. And other was gloves a lot of noise. Thanks for sharing. I think when you get more experienced you will doing few mistakes.
Thanks Marcel for the great tips, I once did a walking tour video in the rain and my squeaky shoes were drowning out the rain sounds on my umbrella - Rookie mistake!
UCS is very good when you are starting out. No need to invent a category system - it's all laid out for you! I've just started my own catalogue using the system.
glad that you mentioned nomadic ambiance. i want to create similar videos. but being a student i can just afford to do it with an i phone. i need your recommendation on how to record the binaural sound. thank you
I recently started recording too and one thing I would love to hear from you is what kind of microphones to use for SFX and field recording and of course your microphone equipment. I really enjoy the videos!! Keep up the great work and inspiration.
Hi! Thats great that you just started. I made videos about our field recording equipment that you can find on the channel. If not let me know and I share the links with you.
Thank you so much for this. But when were you following me to get all this information. I am the epitome of everything you have said. Even to making my own Dead Cat wind blockers. I thought they were fantastic.....at the price...But of course a waste of time.. I'm a great deal older than you but happy to learn from such a vibrant young person as yourself. You will go far. Thanks again. Cheers. Oh! I love the ZoomH6 (sooo good) and I use Reaper.
Hi Rexy! Thank you so much and I think the main reason why I couldn't follow you is because I haven't found any of your content when I was searching for. :)
Just literally started today. My Zoom H1N was delivered last night. I have my Immersive Soundscapes EarSight lav mics. I also bought a pair of Bubblebee Windbubbles size 4. Been trying to understand which gain level to use without too much noise, so yeah... it's a lot to learn. I realize I'm on a budget setup but I'm kinda disappointed in the noise this setup produces. Think I have to find that sweet spot. One thing though. Setting gain to 6-7 and recording ambiance in my backyard records very low volume. But if I crank it to 9-10, the noise becomes apparent. How do I handle this combo? Also, how much work is expected to be done in post production. I mean, removing noise, 100hz bass sounds and what else might end up in your recording?
I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8-10 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. I might try using the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule with Hairy Windscreen with it. I thought about the Rode NTG5, but that is a bit out of the budget that I want to spend. Anyway, do you have any tips to help the recording go better?
Love your channel! I've just discovered field recording and am slowly getting the gear together to start recording peaceful nature sounds. I grabbed some Usi Pros already and now need a recorder to go with them. I like the sound of the Zoom F6. It's seems like it has a very quiet noise floor and I love the idea of 32bit float - which sounds ideal for thunderstorms! Would you say the Zoom F6 is perfect for my intended type of recordings? (A mixture of nature sounds from birds chirping to light rain and even thunderstorms).
Hi! Thank you so much and we're glad you found our channel. Well I mainly use the Zoom F6 and love it. I always think how much money we spent on just one camera lens and with that said, you get a great recorder for that price.
Nice video Marcel and Libby! One question I have is how to set levels for a sound you haven’t heard...like a train passing by that only happens once every few hours or a helicopter flying overhead. Is there a rule of thumb or is it safe to use auto levels in these cases?
Hi Scott! I haven't mentioned setting levels in this video because I released a video where I talk about this subject more in depth so I hope it helps. If not just let me know. :) ruclips.net/video/Ubup5yCV4rA/видео.html
I was looking into naming and structuring for my recordings a year ago, but couldn't find anything I was happy with, especially with not knowing how to store meta information and all. Regarding DAWs, it didn't feel like it came down to any particular DAW, as that's just preference. So thanks for mentioning UCS, I'm watching their videos, looks really promising and extensive! Looks like it's made by some sound-designers, which is exactly the level of depth I was hoping to find as a solution. I'll have to check out any of the programs (soundminer/soundly) and see how they work in combination with UCS. Ideally UCS will be a solution independent of those mentioned programs though, as soundminer costs A LOT (even more than my DAW of choice :O) and soundly is a cloud-subscription, so I never ended up trying either of those in the past. I was wondering, is UCS-system fairly new? What were you using before following that system? Thanks for this video, lots of great insights, very helpful!
Hi! You can also use the free Soundly version to write metadata. If you like to try out the Pro Version I have you a coupon code. Just use FTUS2021 and you can ty it out for one month at no cost. Also Reaper has an integration. I just don't use Soundminer because you need a physical key lock and if you lose it, that's it. You need a new one I suppose. I also just write out the metadata and description with Pages and copy and past it in Audition. I made a video about How to write metadata. Did you find it?
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks so much for your reply Marcel! I hadn't seen your video about Metadata, doing that now =) And also going through your videos about anything else around this topic, tyvm \o/
In your last video, you covered handling nose. It was much worse in stereo than in mono. Is there also a difference when it comes to statics (as in this video) between stereo and mono? (I might be interested in the M2, but for interviews/podcasts in mono.)
Recording people is a mixed bag and varies considerably from government to government laws. It is not always illegal to record if you tell them or it is inferred, obvious. Many meetings online are recorded. They have a note at the top, joining this meeting you agree to being recorded. If you hide the microphone or conceal it this is generally illegal, or can't be used in law or in public. If you are in public and it is obvious you are recording or filming, it maybe okay. Of course check your local jurisdiction. But music is copyright don't use.
Biggest mistake I've ever made was not double-checking the stability of my tripod, which resulted in my ZOOM H5 falling over and crashing straight into a pile of concrete rubble. Poor fragile XYH-5 capsule did not recover after this; even after "fixing" the broken shockmount with some glue and whatnot, after a while the microphones started giving off weird crackling noises and I had to buy a new capsule.
Almost exclusively, I am recording extremely quiet nature sounds and mostly have to deal with the effects of wind in a low noise environment. BTW, do you have a recommendation for an underwater mic? I am only using the Zoom H1n for a recorder due to its small form factor and light weight. I pack in most gear so have strict size and weight restrictions. Also, thanks for this vid. Very informative!
Dear artist: I am using the F3 field recorder. It has two XRL inputs. My question is: is enough to recrod sound I’m monomotor in stereo? best and thanks in advance,
@@FreeToUseSounds i wrote questions on your other video but i have seen than you use zoom f6 on ships chain and you hold something like magnetic mic to have good sound from chain could you understand my question? @@anything7087 I get what you mean and the microphones I use don't work with a Zoom H1n. The reason why is because the F6 has XLR inputs. This something a Zoom h1n doesn't have but you can find contact microphones that have 3.5 jack. That would work with a Zoom H1n. But not the Lom Geofon. For this you would need at least a Zoom H4n
