I just got mine a few days ago, but I quickly realized that if you're going to move around with this thing, the volume buttons "Rattles" they are the only loose buttons on the unit, so a quick tips for anyone with an H1N is to cut a small strip of black electrical tape and place it over the two volume buttons to the left of the unit, it will remove the rattling sound, and you can still use the buttons. A little everyday hack for you.
I also do travel videos and city walk . Am just wondering which one will be best and also after the record did I need to do any post production on it or just the sound from the mic quality is enough. Just like normal video we do editing and colour grading just to boost the colour. Did I need any software to mix or boost the quality?
Was majorly disappointed when I found that out on my own after I bought mine, thankfully I also tried the electrical tape trick and it worked so well that I don't care anymore. Seems like a major flaw for a handheld recorder :/, too bad it's a widespread issue
Love it. I bought the H1N after your earlier video with it. I'm a photographer but I keep the H1N in my bag to record interesting sounds from locations. Super happy with it. Thanks for the videos.
The H1N is my backup audio when shooting in the field in remote areas. I stash it maybe 50 yards from my primary location. When people walk to a location I'm recording at and do nothing but talk I politely let them know I'm recording audio so if they don't want everyone knowing where the bodies are buried probably best to stay quiet.
Beautiful, very inspiring ! I aspire to make some kind of digital postcards to share with my family and friends and your channel has given me a lot of food for thought, I love it ! I dusted off my old zoom H2, recorded the sounds of rain and birds for the best part of the day and then I listened to what I recorded, very enjoyable!
...and we couldn't agree more! We love the H1n and the H1 ( the very first one) which changed the direction of our lives! Always great to use this one! But maybe one day Zoom's things about making a 32 bit version of the H1n.
The issue with editing water SFX is usually that it sounds like actual white noise, that's a really cool tip to turn down the preamp to get more detail of the water. Asking people to be quiet for filming/ recording is always an adventure 😂😂😂
Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.
It's still so much fun to walk around with only a handy recorder like this. And the sound quality is OK for most cases (e.g. ambiance for movies). I love my H1n and my Tascam DR-05 that I always have with me. Sirens, farm machinery, birds, dogs, thunderstorms... there are so many opportunities that I would miss without these little recorders. Do you still use recordings of your H1n in your library? Great video again - I would watch your videos even if it wasn't about field recording :) Viele Grüße - Til.
Hi Til! Oh yes I include these recordings in the All In One Bundle or create theme libraries with it. They are wonderful small, compact and light recording devices and I wouldn't travel without them.
Glad l see this (,and others, of course) video from you. I'm interested in field recordings recently and just started with my equipment few hours ago. Your advice about gain settings is really helpful. Don't know if you have come to Taiwan before or not, hope to see you visit the island. Anyways, I just want to say thank you for your advice and the inspiration! Wish you the best!
I agree about recording water. I was at the Gletscherschlucht in Grindelwald last year and tried to record it, but sadly it was nothing but very very loud white noise. There was no way of recording it and making it sound like a fast flowing canyon river. The walls of the canyon were very high and the noise was too loud. I tried with the H1n but had to delete it because it sounded like nothing. Anyway, I still love my H1n and it was you who made me get one when I started out, after seeing your video about how you started in this business. Anyway, great video as usual. I am really loving your recent walkabout uploads. Great job but it's a shame the H1n didn't really pick up the sound of the cricket so well. Everything else was really great for a tiny cheap handheld.
Ah you shouldn't have deleted it. White noise, pink noise is pretty useful actually. Next time you keep that recording :). Actually the cricket was super quiet and I couldn't go closer or raise the gain.
Hi! Ah this is very specific subject and in order to learn about the difference, check out posts about the difference between white noise, pink noise and brown noise.
Record an instrumental vocal and personal concert on it. I put it exactly in the middle of the two columns, a distance of about 10m. I adjust the volume myself. The limiter is on. Or when listening to a video editing program, I have bad headphones, I always have different sound from different concerts. Or is it a jamb of the most customizable equipment and speakers.

@@FreeToUseSounds There is an unusual way to use this mic. I can record field sounds straight to my footage even if the camera is far way from the object. I have a Synco G2 and the receiver I put in top of my camera and I connect the zoom h1n on the transmiter of the synco, so, instead of use the little mic of the synco transmiter I use the greate X Y Mic of H1n. Cool video! Nice to see the creativity and results with a lower priced recorder! What I’m always wondering about is how to balance your headphone level with your gain level..have any tips on that?
This is a really good question to ask because headphone preamps can be noisy too. In a quiet area I have the volume on 100 and lower it down depending on the gain level. It happened sometimes that I think I recorded to noisy just to find out later during the editing process that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. In loud areas I try to be around 60 to 80 but that also depends ion the sound source.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks for the tip :)! I’ve also had that happening..being surprised during the editing process. Perhaps it’s something you can sometimes mention in your videos?
Nice seeing you are still using this recorder. This is also my first recorder I bought after seeing so much of your videos about it. But the weird thing is, I think now there is a problem with it and I don’t know why is like this. 🙁 Wherever I record, there are some weird mechanical noises that I don’t understand from where that’s coming. That weird noises are not real during my recording session. Do you have any idea what could be? Have you ever experienced something like this? I’m wondering if the microphones are damaged because I used the recorder in humid environment. 🙁
Hi Daniela. You only use the XY microphones? Maybe condensation could cause this problem. I never had that issue before and I always make sure to keep the microphones together with silica bags. But you might want to reach out to the shop where you bought it or costumer support. But record a sound file and show it to them. They could give you a better answer. If you still have warranty maybe they exchange the unit.

Hello Rob, Thanks for reaching out! Whenever I'm solely recording and not filming, I have a little practice that's saved me countless hours in post-production. At the beginning or end of each recording, I always take a moment to verbally note down key details - like what I'm capturing, the location, and the time of day. This way, when I'm sifting through hundreds of files during the editing process, I have a clear auditory marker of what each file contains. It's a simple technique but incredibly effective for keeping things organized!
@@FreeToUseSounds That’s actually a really good idea. I will try to remember that myself when I start on my adventures in sound. Thank you kindly Marcel 👍👍
I just watched 3 of your videos, and I loved your content. I hope you can see this message before November 30 because I'll be traveling to Cusco, Peru, and one of my ideas is to film the city and create cinematic content. It's my first time doing this, but I already knew that sound is super important for the quality of what I want to create. I have a question, and I hope you can answer it, haha. I have a budget of $200 to invest in sound equipment. What would be, in your opinion, the best beginner's kit, possibly including headphones? Would the H1N be a good choice? Or is there a better option for recording ambient sound within the budget I mentioned?
With $200, you can kickstart your recording journey with a Zoom H1n, basic wind protection, headphones, a mini tripod, rechargeable batteries, a charger, and an 32 Gb SD card.
So I combine the Zoom H1n with the Rode Videomic GO II.. to get 24bit 48khz audio, do I need to connect it with the TRS 3.5mm cable that came with the mic? or use usb c to the usb input of the zoom h1n? or doesn't it matter? because when I connect the mic to my computer with the usb it does sound a bit better and cleaner compared to when I connect it to my Zoom h1n.. please any help would be appreciated!
Thank you for your beautiful (on many levels) video. I just ordered 1 after watching your video. I wonder now - does it have ext mic input? I will check the specs but what I haer you capture is great but I am also thinking for capturing vox. Slange Var. Update / edit - I have now read online manual and see, yes it can take exteral input for mic. Slange
Marcel which zoom H1n to get? the 2018 version or the new 2023 model? I'm worried about the RF interference videos I saw with the other zoom models. Is the new version any better?
I watched your review because I'm looking for a device to record natural sounds like forest, waterfalls, rivers, birds... For video I use a Canon R7 mirrorless camera but for sound I haven't found any decent solution. Internal mics are not very good. Also tried a shoe mount mic (Deity D4 Mini) but I still get a lot of noise. Especially when I record birds I have so much background noise that I cannot use it. I've tried all kinds of settings on my camera but it seems it has bad preamps and the mic is not that great. So after watching many reviews for shoe mount mics I saw a recommendation to get a Recorder and mount it on my camera. To use it as a separate unit doesn't feel like a solution because every time I will have to match the video with the sound and I prefer to have it directly over the video for a more natural feeling. What do you think would be better, the H1 Essential recorder, the older version H1n or I would get better results with a shoe mount mic with battery power like Sennheiser MKE400 or something from Rode? Now my budget is maximum 200 but I'm planning to invest more in the future.
Hi!, really I like your video, one question, I need récord a orchestra outdoor, violins, piano, chellos, trumpets, etc, could I put this recorder in middle of The orchestra and record all the instruments? Thank you for your comments!
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you for your speedy reply... & answer.. I just invested into the Zoom H4n pro... Got some great sound off a sound board at an event I was hired to video for.

I would be interested to see if the H1N can do live rock concerts and loud bands rehearsals well? How well does the limiter work for this? Or would you recommend the H2N? My old H2 died from a leaking battery 😥
Hi! The Zoom H1n could do that for sure but don't be to close to the boxes. The limiter creates some extra noise but that wouldn't matter during a rock concert. Using an H2n gives you another recording option but I wouldn't handheld an H2n. Pretty sensitive so you would need to find a good location. Also keep make sure you have the rights to rock an official concert and seek permission.
Did you not like the ambience recordings that you could directly record with the Zoom H1n? If you want to record with an external stereo microphone that has already a battery powered solution, check out the Audio Technica 8022. But keep in mind you need wind protection too. Probably a tripod, nanopole or pistol grip as well. Do some research and look for external microphones for Zoom H1n. The Zoom H1n doesn’t supply phantom power so that’s an important factor to consider.
You have mentioned Audio Technica 8022 for recording in one of the comments. Is it a good idea that microphone on top of the camera. I have FX3 with top handle and it provides phantom power. Right now I use Rode NTG5 but that's shotgun. Works most of the time, but I want the audio to be more immersive. I am interested in capturing in ambience sounds while shooting as I am a one man band and cant carry too much equipment.
I'm quite happy with my H1n, but I do wish it had one XLR input with phantom power and 32 bit recording. Even without those two things it's still an awesome little device. Cheers 🍻
@finite-tuning - I’m looking for my first recorder, and trying to plan a bit for future function. I’m trying to get the cheapest Zoom that provides input for (1-2) XLR inputs - so glad to hear there is a work around for this on this device. Do you know if this zoom can - - Connect directly to a PC so I can record directly to PC; - Connect directly to a camera so I don’t have to sync. audio/video at a later time.
@@arkphotog: Yes, the Zoom H1n can work as a PC audio interface using the USB port, as well as a card reader. And yes, you can use the headphone out port to connect directly to a camera our other audio input device. The H1n can be used as a microphone or a pre-amp, or a stand alone recorder, and/or a 3.5mm and USB audio interface. It's really a must have little tool, unless of coarse you must have XLR inputs. In that case you may want to consider the H4n instead. Cheers 🍻
@@Finite-Tuning Thank you very much for your response. This really helps... Yes, the Zoom H1n does seem to be a great tool! Good size, quality/capable, and (per your response) allows for lots of options for use and connectivity. Thank you very much!
hi FTUS ! do you know a good impedance converter ? I just got the Korg CM-300 (thanks to your video btw) and when I connected it to my H5 I just had noise so I think it's a impedance issue because it works fine with my sound card
Thank you for your videos. (I left this note in the community post. I wasn’t sure if it was best left here). I am hoping you can help with the following: What is the cheapest Zoom device that will work on its own with its own microphones, but also allows me to: - connect 1-2 external microphones, - allow me to connect directly to a computer (pc), so that I also have the option to record directly into a computer (usb?) - connect directly to a (mirrorless) camera so the camera can make use of better mics and not have to sync. audio and video at a later time. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
After much deliberation and procrastination, I recently bought the Zoom H8. It is probably overkill for what I do, but they have come down a lot in price to the point where they are not a lot more expensive that the H5 with a lot more functionality. So hopefully I’ll grow in to it 👍
Hello, I wanted to know if it is normal after leaving a few minutes without batteries it loses the time and date. Wouldn't it have to have an internal battery to save time? I don't know if it's a defect in mine or a feature of the product.

Hi,, how to connect the iphone 15 promax video mode in the same time?
Thank you❤
Nice job bro
Do you think I can record sound design with a mke 400 micro canon
Thank you for your beautiful (on many levels) video. I just ordered 1 after watching your video. I wonder now - does it have ext mic input? I will check the specs but what I haer you capture is great but I am also thinking for capturing vox. Slange Var. Update / edit - I have now read online manual and see, yes it can take exteral input for mic. Slange
Hi! Thank you for watching. Only plugin power. So a microphone with pp won't work without an 48V adapter.
love the video , i am going buy one for myself:) Christmas present to me :)
Hope you enjoy it!
Marcel which zoom H1n to get? the 2018 version or the new 2023 model? I'm worried about the RF interference videos I saw with the other zoom models. Is the new version any better?
Is there any alternative that can direct connect into phone/camera?
Do you recommend a shock mount for zoom H1N?
Oh yes. Rycote has one with a grip. Not cheap but it definitely does the trick.
Very nice!!! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Great Review. But How to sync with camera?
Thank you! Oh you can clap with your hands and later sync the camera audio with the audio from the H1n.
@@FreeToUseSounds ok Thankx
thank you for your continued Audio inspiration.. Q: Do you always keep the wind shield ( Dead cat ) on the recorder when recorder on location....
Hi! Thank you for watching and yes. Whenever I'm outside I keep it on. Inside I just use a foam.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you for your speedy reply... & answer.. I just invested into the Zoom H4n pro... Got some great sound off a sound board at an event I was hired to video for.
That's awesome :)
I thought i was the only one who had issues with the cable and tripod haha
Ha Ha Ha. No that happens to all of us. The cables for my DMS setup are super sensitive.
I really like all your videos and to me . Please I need help . Am into travel videos and city walk . Am just wondering which one will be best and also after the record did I need to do any post production on it or just the sound from the mic quality is enough.
Just like normal video we do editing and colour grading just to boost the colour. Did I need any software to mix or boost the quality?
what camera and lens did you use for this? I love the footages
Sony A7iv and Sony G-Master 16-35
What differen on h1 2 3 4 5 and new one. Purpuse and usese
why not ask chatgpt?
Can this recorder be used as a outdoor mobile microphone to record voices for interviews and inside for recorder voices from group discussions?
Oh yes you can do this with this recorder!
Hello i want to record ambience sound with h1n what is the best external mic?
Did you not like the ambience recordings that you could directly record with the Zoom H1n? If you want to record with an external stereo microphone that has already a battery powered solution, check out the Audio Technica 8022. But keep in mind you need wind protection too. Probably a tripod, nanopole or pistol grip as well. Do some research and look for external microphones for Zoom H1n. The Zoom H1n doesn’t supply phantom power so that’s an important factor to consider.
Thank you very much
You have mentioned Audio Technica 8022 for recording in one of the comments.
Oh this might be to heavy and with wind protection its too much. Check out the AT8024 which is perfect for this use case.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks a tonne

I'm quite happy with my H1n, but I do wish it had one XLR input with phantom power and 32 bit recording. Even without those two things it's still an awesome little device. Cheers 🍻
Hi! You can buy this for the H1n. You could purchase a 48 pp converter to use a with a microphone. The converter has phantom power.
@finite-tuning -
I’m looking for my first recorder, and trying to plan a bit for future function.
I’m trying to get the cheapest Zoom that provides input for (1-2) XLR inputs - so glad to hear there is a work around for this on this device.
Do you know if this zoom can -
- Connect directly to a PC so I can record directly to PC;
- Connect directly to a camera so I don’t have to sync. audio/video at a later time.
@@arkphotog:
Yes, the Zoom H1n can work as a PC audio interface using the USB port, as well as a card reader.
Cheers 🍻

Thank you very much for your response.
I tried one too and got a lot of interference. So nothing I could recommend right now.
Thank you for your videos.
(I left this note in the community post. I wasn’t sure if it was best left here).
I am hoping you can help with the following:
What is the cheapest Zoom device that will
work on its own with its own microphones, but also allows me to:
- connect 1-2 external microphones,
- allow me to connect directly to a computer (pc), so that I also have the option to record directly into a computer (usb?)
- connect directly to a (mirrorless) camera so the camera can make use of better mics and not have to sync. audio and video at a later time.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
Hey! You can look into the Zoom H4n Pro or Zoom H5n. :)
Yes, mine does that too. When restarting the H1n, the time and date shows up in the first screen right?
@@FreeToUseSounds Yes exactly, so it's not a defect in mine.
@@FilmagensKrigger I don’t think it is. So just keep the batteries inside and it should be fine :)
awesome!
Thank you for watching Jeremy!
I am Dan in Batavia New York I just ordered one I thought the sound quality by the geese was amazing.... I wonder if it's better than the sound on the camera I got the Canon 80d are my older sx60 they have pretty good sound and what is good you can set the sound.. I don't know if they would let you bring it to a concert I'd rather have the sound than stand there all day filming like people do cuz that's really annoying I honestly think people should not be allowed to just sit there and film all day because it's annoying to the people behind them and I mean I love filming I saw ACDC I did not film what I got the best picture ever when that confetti was coming down and we were far away of Angus Young we were in the nosebleed and it was a s800 Nikon junk camera
you could be a great spy
Woww
Thanks for watching!!
