Great to see another video. I don't really need it, but I'm curious about the H2 Essential. I had the original H2 (what I started out on), then the H2n which I used all the time because of the 15 or so hour battery life and various recording options (it meant if I only had the recorder on me I could still record therapy demonstrations. I could always have it in my pocket and record ambience and nature sounds etc), but as I progressed I wanted something with less self noise. I'm curious whether the H2 Essential has lower self noise, the battery is listed slightly shorter, so I'm curious if it hits the listed duration and if the different recording options are good. I always enjoy your videos and your presence and presenting style and look forward to new videos.
Hi Dan! After reading your comment, I looked into the H2 Essential, but it’s currently unavailable here in Hong Kong. I’ll have to wait a bit, but if I can get my hands on it, we’ll definitely purchase one and make a video about it. Stay tuned!

Welcome back! Thank you for the new windscreen suggestion. I'm also having trouble finding a Geophone microphone here in the States. Do you have any alternative recommendations?
Hi! This is a bit tricky because I know the LOM Geofons are hard to come by, and I’ve seen a few alternatives. However, I prefer not to highlight them as they seem to be heavily inspired by LOM’s design. Instead, I’d recommend keeping an eye out for the original LOM Geofons.
Nice to have you back! How would you compare the noise performance of this new recorder to the older H1n? I'm looking for a small device to take with me but feel that the older H1n has a bit too much of a noise floor.
Hi! We just ordered a stereo bar that should arrive soon, so I’ll start recording with both mics at the same height and placement. I think the results will depend on how we handle gain levels and post-production. From what I read in the field recording community on Reddit, the noise floors for both are supposed to be pretty similar, but we’ll have to see. Should be interesting to compare!
Because you were talking a lot about the suspension kit, is that something that works with any or most zooms? More specifically the H4N Pro. My guess would be yes, as it has that thing in the middle that you can screw in to, but I was wondering about it. For myself my recordings don't have too many handling sounds, just a little. It is pricey I'm seeing, but nonetheless it could be a nice little upgrade, definitely made me interested about using it =) I'm looking to build a binaural head for recording, so I want something that holds everything together to be able to walk around. Very few channels I have that, but better to not have to rely on the recommendation-algorithm with these things :P
Hello Marc! Thank you so much for watching and I believe the suspension kit for the H4n is still available, and comes with wind protection. However, if they run out of stock, they might not produce more, which is why we also recommended a more affordable option from Movo which is like a one for all kind of solution. The kit is good for holding your recorder, but if you’re using a binaural head as well, the weight might be too much. The suspension kit can tilt forward or backward if to heavy, or the suspension ring might get squeezed and become unusable. :(

Hello. So cool to see you back ;] I missed your videos, even though I have your sound library to enjoy, the new recordings are just amazing! Still been waiting to see an update since new H1 came out. I am still enjoying your previously suggested H1n ( also needs all of those small tools ), but I wanted to ask if you think the H1e is a significant upgrade to H1n? Thank you
Hi! Thank you so much for checking in! As for sound quality, I don’t think there will be a significant difference, but I’d like to wait until I have all the gear to make a fair comparison. We ordered an A-B stereo bar, so we’ll be able to set both recorders side by side for testing. I do think 32-bit on this small recorder is great for sound processing and having more editing flexibility. As I mentioned in another comment about recording the cannon, in the video, you only see the cannon firing. But in this continuous moment, I also recorded the bells before and after. I edited the three parts as separate tracks by normalizing them individually. The person handling the cannon left only a few seconds between the sounds, so there wasn’t time to stop, adjust gain, and restart. With 24-bit, I’d risk clipping the cannon or having the bell too low. Raising the gain on a 24-bit recording might add more noise, whereas 32-bit gives me just more headroom. We’re currently in Xiamen, but we’ll be back in Hong Kong in about a week. I’ll upload these recordings and more with a new update so you can download and check them out. Oh my gosh, yes, that was us! Our hotel was in Tsuen Wan. We’re in Xiamen now but heading back to Hong Kong next week. We decided to stay another week since we bought the Voyage Audio second-order microphone, but unfortunately, it has a hardware failure. They’re sending us a new one to Hong Kong. Where did you spot us? Was it on a bridge by chance?
@@FreeToUseSounds No it wasnt the bridge but rather I saw you across the street next to the park (around 02:50) - your mic was super obvious so I knew you were recording. I was actually around doing some recording for myself with a pair of OKM + Zoom H1n
@@kenneth1234568 Ahh, this park! We loved seeing the cute turtles, but we also witnessed someone releasing a fish into the water, despite signs indicating that this isn’t recommended. It would have been great if you had come up to us! :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Yes its defintiely not encouraged and to some extent forbidden to release fish in the water but unfortunately people here arent following it very tightly :) will definitely come and say hi if I do see you next week!
Yeah, they are back again 😀 I hope you guys are doing good. Thanks for another great video, combining beautiful landscape with field recording. Viele Grüße - Til.
For the money, I think it's a pretty good recorder. I was expecting higher noise, but it seems to be pretty O.K. But I need the auto-recording feature (when the sound pressure level goes above a certain level, it starts recording, and when it drops, it stops recording). The previous Zoom H1n didn't do this.
Hi there! Absolutely! A suspension kit acts as a buffer between your hand and the recorder, which helps minimize handling noise. When you hold a handy recorder directly and walk while recording, it can pick up rumble and unwanted noises from the movement. With a suspension kit, you can easily avoid this. We use one from Rycote, which is quite pricey, and some models aren’t even available anymore. But I found a budget-friendly alternative from Movo that offers options for the H1n, H1e, and other smaller field recorders. If you’re aiming for cleaner audio, I highly recommend getting one. Also, I’ve been in touch with Radius Windshields, and hopefully, they’ll develop their own version soon. Let me know if that helps, or feel free to message me here on RUclips if you have more questions!
Having a small, lightweight hand recorder is a good investment. My present solution is to attach a Shure MV88 to my mobile phone, but a smartphone is rather expensive and the Zoom H2 Essential is cheaper than the MV88 microphone. I prefer recording MS stereo, and the H2 Essential is kind of a DMS configuration. The fun thing recording MS with cardioid mono is that an old, analog Dolby surround unit will be able to decode it. I used to have som fun with that some decades ago.
Thank you, Marcel, for your amazing videos. Is the Zoom H1e better than the Zoom H1n? Is the 32-bit floating point worth switching from my Zoom H1n to the Zoom H1e? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hi! This is a tough one because I wanted to wait until I have my A-B stereo bar to start comparing. Not having gain control on the H1e is something I need to get used to. Recording in default mode on the spot means more work for me in post, but I enjoy the editing process much more now than I did two years ago. The sound quality may not be drastically different, but with the cannon example, I would have to set the gain low with the H1n and maybe use a limiter. Since there was also a bell ringing, if I recorded it in 24-bit and later cut the file to create separate parts, I’d likely introduce noise when raising the level. With the 32-bit, I split the recording into three parts-1. Bell Ring Before, 2. Cannon Fire, and 3. Bell Ring After-without having to stop the recording and adjust the levels each time. So, with 32-bit, I ended up with three separate files, all properly normalized.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you so much for all these explanations! For beginners like me, I feel like choosing 32-bit equipment is a good idea. What do you think?
@ the bit where you were recording the waves reminded me of when my Sony M10 Sonny nearly died a while back after getting dragged off into the water. That was a sudden wave from a ship 🚢 that caught it. Lesson learned the hard way there - but thankfully Sonny had the capsules replaced and was cleaned out internally and is good as new. Definitely a good point to make though to avoid that happening haha.
Great to see you both back after all this time !! Nice video. I've been using my H1e a bit lately too and I'm quite happy with it. Did you just buy it to review ? I guess there's not that much difference using this or the Tascam X6 and they're both small, but I'd probably expect a better result from the X6. I've been wondering whether I should buy the X6 or not, and can't make my mind up. Maybe an idea for a video or a small part in one of your videos ...... H1e v X6 ? Anyway, once again, good to see you back finally.
Hi Simon! With the Prime Deal sale, it was a no brainer for us to buy it. It’s good to have another small recorder but it’s also a push for us to make new RUclips videos. Just ordered a AB stereo bar so we can make accurate comparisons videos.
Thank you so much! It’s going to be difficult to use the AmbiX recording since I would have to decode it into 6-channel recordings. But since we don’t film in 360, I’m not sure if that works. However, I will be creating 5.1 tracks, stereo, and stereo binaural tracks for different video locations. Should be fun! :)

Welcome to China again, I look forward to your continued update of the China series of recordings (I'm sorry I'm a lazy person). Enjoy the travel, the scenery and the food, and I wish you all the best.
I would like to ask if the device self-noise level is really as bad as mentioned in other reviews? I'm considering buying an H1e, but this scares me a bit. Thank you for your videos.
Hi! When listening to the sound examples in our video, did you find the self-noise to be noticeable? If you’re looking to record similar sounds, I don’t think you’ll run into any issues. The spectrograms of the files look good, too. While it might not be the best choice for quiet room tone recording, it’s great for recording daily life ambiances. Ultimately, it’s important to make your own decision, and don’t let negative opinions hold you back from recording the environment around you. I hope our video provided a different perspective!
I see that you're using the same phones that I love to use also. These Sony headphones are the best. I buy them used for almost nothing and rebuild them. The only thing I can't buy is the head band. Everything, the cushions, the cable and the drivers are available.
Hey Marco! Funny timing-we actually have the Roland CS-10EM with us but haven’t tested it out yet. We’re planning to try it when we compare the H1n and H1e. Just ordered a new A-B bar too, so it’ll be easier to flip between the two!
Thanks for sharing your experience! So far, we haven’t noticed any self-noise issues with this recorder in our videos. It might depend on the recording environment, but it’s been solid for us. And good news-we’ll be doing a comparison video soon, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs in different settings.
For something like that market, do you just walk up and start recording or did you know the staff there? it seems like a less than public area to be and its... not exactly intimate but a slice of peoples lives that are often not public.
Hi! That’s correct. Whenever we record in a private space that’s open to the public, we always make sure to ask someone in charge when we film as well.
Hi. Fun that you’re back. The handling noise of this recorder is really awful. Yes one can use a tripod or similar, but it really not a good look for a recorder in 2024. The screen is… the less said the better. Respectfully, I’m a bit surprised that you’re as positive/neutral about it as you are. Suggesting multiple purchases of additional gear to compensate for the recorder’s short comings is IMHO justifying a poor product. Hand on heart, do you really recommend this product? ;)
Hi! Absolutely, I’d recommend this recorder for anyone interested in getting started with sound recording. It may not come with add-ons anymore, but the sound quality it delivers is good. It’s also good to keep in mind that many recorders and microphones, including models like the older Zoom H1n, Tascam X6, and X8, no longer come with extras like wind protection or suspension kits. Are these now poor product? Even our microphones from Schoeps or Sennheiser-which can cost thousands-don’t include wind protection. For those, an additional investment in accessories, sometimes ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, is common. So, while it might be an extra cost, for anyone looking to pursue sound recording seriously, investing in extra accessories is part of getting the best results possible.
@ Thank you for your thoughtful reply. As a starter piece of kit, ok it may have a place. In response to your, possibly rhetorical, question if a lack of wind protection makes the Tascam x6 and others a poor product: No, but those are not laden with all the negatives of the reviewed product. We respectfully disagree with each other on what a good recorder should be, and that’s fine.
Hello Andres, It really comes down to what you need from a recorder and how you plan to use it. For us, the H1 Essential has been a good choice for recording everyday sounds we’re after. It’s reliable, easy to use, and sounds great for the price!
Hi! Thanks for pointing that out-it’s a fair critique. Handling noise can definitely be an issue with handy recorders, especially when used without stabilization. That’s actually one of the reasons I moved away from handheld recording as even the best handy recorders can pick up handling noise. In our video, we showcased gear designed to avoid these issues. If handling noise is affecting your recordings, you could consider investing in equipment that minimizes it. If you’re after cleaner sound, a bit of an upgrade can make a big difference. 😊
Some very cool sounds, but all of the recordings have such a strong ambient rumble that doesn’t exist in actual space. Every one sounds like a factory. Even the shoreline.
Thank you for your feedback-it really helps us understand different perspectives! I’m curious about what you mean by “doesn’t exist in actual space,” but I can see how the recordings might come across as industrial. These are authentic, unaltered recordings of Hong Kong, which has a very distinctive, bustling soundscape. The shoreline you mentioned actually does have industrial sounds nearby-there was a factory just to the left. The ambient rumble might simply reflect the unique vibe of Hong Kong’s urban and coastal environment.
I hear you, and I agree that it would be great if these devices came with some basics included. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common these days. The good news is that you don’t need all the add-ons we use, and the online market offers plenty of options to make it more cost-effective, letting you customize the setup you need.

Hallo Til!! So nice to see you back as well! :)
Hello. Can you please describe to me what a susspention kit is as I am totally blind and can't see the screne. I love your work.
Hi there!
@ Thank you for that. Can you please let me know where I can buy this and what brand? Thank you again. Michael
Hi Michael! Here is a link for you since you can buy it on Amazon. geni.us/ftusmovozh1e. It's called Movo AEK-Z4 Handy Portable Recorder.
you could get $2 speargun latex tubing cut it up in will dampen sound as well as your shock mount
Glad you guys are back!
Thank you for stopping by!
Hi! I contacted the Zoom Supplier in Thailand and I am able to purchase the H2 Essential. So we hope we can make a video soon about this one too.
Oh yes, it's not a wrong idea so go ahead.
It’s good to see another video from you mate. Hope you’ve been enjoying the travels 😊
Thank you so much! :) Yes we traveled a lot but didn't made any videos. Time to change that! :)
@@EQAVOX Ahh yes, I remember you sharing that on your Instagram! Sneaker waves can definitely be a surprising experience! :)
@@FreeToUseSounds that’s a pro tip to always stay close to the recorder haha. I would have been if I wasn’t too busy setting the camera up.
@@FreeToUseSounds OK, fair enough. That was a great price you got it for. Looking forward to more videos as always. 👍
@ Thank you!! Zoom H3VR classic coming soon! :)
Glad to see a new video from you! Will be looking forward to the H3-VR recording as well. 😊
Audience from HK👋🏻 just bought a H1 essential XLR to replace my F2, it have everything I need for wedding/ event filming, and the design look really cool
Hello!! :) Ahh, I had a quick look. I didn’t even know, they made another H1 version.
great video. i want to record nature sounds, street sounds and coffee shop sounds. what is the equipment needed, can i use only one mic, the 'zoom h1' that cost around $100 on amazon and what else please? or give me affiliate links to amazon that is the bare minimum for quality. I am newb
Hi Mike. This video shows you many option in order to start with what you would like to record.
Welcome to China again, I look forward to your continued update of the China series of recordings (I'm sorry I'm a lazy person). Enjoy the travel, the scenery and the food, and I wish you all the best.
Hi Lawrence! Right now we're in Xiamen! So nice out here! Greetings to Chengdu!
With wich camera do you film ?
Hi! With the Osmo Pocket 3 and iPhone 15 Pro.
Lovely work guys!
Thanks a ton!!!
You made me happy and enjoyed your video. Appreciate you brother.
Glad you enjoyed it and greetings to Cambodia! The country where we started our recording journey in 2017!! Time for us to come back :)
@ Yep, I used to watch that video. In that video, you recorded in Siem Reap province and you recorded sound while worker doing their work.
That's correct :)
Would it work for recording family history interviews? I’m looking for something that isn’t too complicated.
@@millymolly5266 Hi! Oh yes you can definitely use it for interviews.
I see that you're using the same phones that I love to use also. These Sony headphones are the best. I buy them used for almost nothing and rebuild them. The only thing I can't buy is the head band. Everything, the cushions, the cable and the drivers are available.
Great choice! You can't beat these headphones.
What about this recorder combined with the Roland cs-10em?
Hey Marco! Funny timing-we actually have the Roland CS-10EM with us but haven’t tested it out yet. We’re planning to try it when we compare the H1n and H1e. Just ordered a new A-B bar too, so it’ll be easier to flip between the two!
H1e has the most noisy built-in mics compared to my other recorders including h1n. Did you have the same problem and how could we deal with this.
Hey can u please test new ZOOM H2e
Hi! Ohh if we come across one we will do it!
Glad .... you're Back.
Thank you so much! So glad you haven't forgotten about us.

looong time no sounds! You guys are cool. With love.
Thank you Alberta!!

These recorders got some bad reviews. I'm enjoying mine, though (H4). Good video as usual
Hello Andres,
It really comes down to what you need from a recorder and how you plan to use it. For us, the H1 Essential has been a good choice for recording everyday sounds we’re after. It’s reliable, easy to use, and sounds great for the price!
You glazed over the major handling noise issue associated with that recorder...
yay!!!🥹🥹🥹🥹

Speaks volumes to me that you need so many addons to get this device to function properly. Failed board room product imo.
I hear you, and I agree that it would be great if these devices came with some basics included. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common these days. The good news is that you don’t need all the add-ons we use, and the online market offers plenty of options to make it more cost-effective, letting you customize the setup you need.
