- In this video I cover how to improve your audio quality on RUclips (on a budget)! There are a number of different approaches you can take to improve the quality of your audio without breaking the bank. One of the best ways to improve your video's sound affordably is to use lavalier microphones (also known as lapel mics) that can plug into your phone or the camera itself. You also can externally record your audio using a field recorder. My personal favorite is the Zoom H1n. Throughout the video, I cycle through each of the audio options so you can hear and compare the differences in their audio quality. If you're looking for budget approaches to get better sound in your RUclips videos, these options range from as little as $17 for a lavalier microphone that plugs into your phone to $26 for a lavalier microphone that can plug straight into your camera, to $115 for one of the most affordable field recorders on the market, where you can record your audio externally from your camera's built-in microphone and have multi-channel recordings.

By the way, your video has been very useful to me. I am trying to decide what to buy to improve my RUclips audio. The voice recorder seems good but I can't figure out how can I place it close to me in the outdoors if I want my hands free while filming the video.

Be aware not all memory cards are compatable with the Zoom. Mine came as part of a package deal with a Kodak card which needed to be formatted every time the Zoom was switched on. Not convenient to back up to another drive before switching off the H1n so bought a Scan Disc card which works fine. Apart from that no problem with the Zoom. If you are prepared to accept that a jewel can be made from plastic, that's the H1n.

Hi! I bought the same mic and recorder for a wedding shoot. But when i play back my recording, it's only playing on my left side. Is there a way to fix it? Or do i have to fix it on my post editing?

Thank you! I seem to be getting bad audio with my Zoom H1N because the software I'm using requires MP3 audio files...using VLC media player for conversion. Too time consuming though. I wish for its price, its MP3 audio quality was better.
H1n records in .mp3 format too. Buy pay attention to the bitrate. It can go from 48kbps to 320kbps. 48kbps sounds like old telephone. Best is 320kbps

i bought a amartlav+ and plugged it into the H1N and nothing ..nothing..doesn't work..have any idea?
You need a adapter. From TRRS to TRS (Rode SC3). If you have Rode SmartLav+
