I know this is old, but just in case anyone needs it: direct audio has no latency because the interface routes the audio from the mic directly to the headphones. Without it, you have to listen to audio that goes from the mic, through USB, through the DAW and then to the computer output, which always has some lag (the echo-ie sound you refer 6min into the video). I have no experience using it, but I've been to live calls were I could hear myself with a delay and it really messes with your head. I also know that for recording artists, this might mean the final audio will be out of sync. Budget interfaces have a latency from 2ms to 7ms, but usually from 5ms upwards, it's already noticeable.
I'm just trying to figure out how to play the recording through my computer speakers so I don't have to wear a headset or listen through the tinny h1n speaker. How do you do THAT?
@@RichLP1 Can't say if it's possible. As far as I know, monitoring is always done with the recording device. If you record with something like a Presonus Studio 24c, you monitor plugged to the Presonus not the PC. If you record with a camera, you monitor plugged to the camera. Monitoring through the PC might be possible by going to windows sound settings and activating "Listen to this device", but it could be laggy.
Probably because the mic is an analog components, which can easily be converted to analog signals to the headphones. When it has to go through USB, it has to be first converted to digital, as it does when you want to record and save the data to a memory device. That digital data has to be sent through the USB cable using some sort of serial protocol, which adds additional data in the headers of the packets, in order to be received and interpreted by the computer.
If you are having trouble connecting to the computer, first try a different usb cable. If that's unsuccessful, make sure the H1n is off before connecting to the computer. Then power up the H1n and you should see choices of Audio I/F or Card Reader. If this screen doesn't appear, I have no idea why not other than suspect cable or usb port.
Have you tried ASIO drivers instead of regular ones. With those and monitoring from the headphones on the recorder with Direct On (as you would do with any professional audio interface, where you connect your headphones or monitors to your interface, not to your computer...hence the term interface) you will be able to record without noticeable latency.
Very helpful! I used to have a very similar desk lamp, it just had green glass, not amber. It got cracked over the years (but that's because I'm clumsy sometimes).
I don't know why, but now for some reason, when I turn my H1n on the display does not show the usb or card reader screen but goes directly to card reader.ss If I plug a usb cable into my computer then turn on the H1n, it still goes directly to card reader.
Unfortunately, you're not the only one to encounter this problem, based on previous comments. I haven't seen this problem myself, but there's obviously a glitch in the firmware. I hope Zoom is aware of this and has updated the firmware. You may want to look on their site for the latest update, although, admittedly, I have never checked to see if mine needs updating.
Thanks for this video, really appreciate it. I’m thinking of using this with Garage Band in my IMac. I think the latency issue might be a problem but will enjoy giving it a go. 😃
Thanks for the info. I have a question. I just got this recorder and when I hook it up to the computer I do not get the usb menu. I have tried different usb ports on my computer and it still just goes to the regular recording menu. It does not seem to recognize the usb. It did the first time but not any more. Could I have done something in the settings or is it just a faulty unit? If you have any ideas I would appreciate your insight.
Try switching cables. had the same problem. I have used it regularly as a USB mic for recording a voiceover for powerpoint. I then switched to SD card to make an audio recording. When I wanted to go back to USB, the option just wouldn't come up - it kept going straight to SD Card. In desperation I tried a different cable and to my amazement the USB option is back. Both cables were from the same store and fairly new but the shorter one worked and the longer one didn't.
I don't seem to be able to revisit the initial Audio IF vs Card Reader option; it seems that I chose Card Reader at some point, and now I can't change it. Do you have any idea how to do that?
thanks for the observations. helpful. what are you using to prop up that monitor above your laptop? I have the same setup though yours seems much more stable. thanks again.
Im facing problem while using zoom h1 as a audio interface ,when i trun off my computer and again turn it on the h1 too opens along with pc but i should have to set up again in h1..do you have any solution to setup a defult settings on h1 ...
Not sure I understand the question, but the H1n will automatically give you the choice of Audio I/F or Card Reader when reconnected to a powered computer. You then have to choose which mode you want. I don't think the recorder is sophisticated enough to allow you to set a default, but I may be wrong.
I'm not sure it's as crucial as it is with video. Just get the fastest you can find for a reasonable price. Memory is cheap now, so you can probably get premium brands (SanDisk, Lexar) for not much money.
I have an issue, I dont know if someone can help me with this: The issue is that my zoom h1n is not showing the menu to used as an interface when I connected it with any laptops. This is weird because before everything was working properly. Did someone have similar issues with this?
I tested my H1n by first turning it on, then plugging into the laptop. The USB menu came up ok. Ditto with turning on the H1n after plugging into the laptop. Others seem to have similar problems, but since mine is functioning ok, I'm not sure what's causing the problem. Could be your USB cable is faulty, so it's not seeing the computer, but I'm sure you've probably tried swapping cables.
annoying, I just bought one of these and I'm having exactly the same issue as other people, just can't get that PC menu to appear. Tried 5 different cables on 2 different ports on a PC custom built for me 4 months ago (note the cable works with other devices and it even powers up the thing with batteries out). Back for a refund, and I guess I'll keep doing this until I get one that works.
I recorder on Audacity with the Zoom H1n just like he did. When I played back the audio it was a choppy and not good quality. Anyone else has had this problem?
Same here. I can't get the usb menu. Did you ever get it figured out? I am thinking maybe I have a bad unit. I have tried different usb ports on my computer but no different.
Initially didn't work for me as well, but once switched the usb cable to a different one, it was good. Apparently some USB cables don't allow data transfer or any other functionality for that matter, other than plain charging.
All that happens to me is that the H1n becomes a speaker. Edit: Oh I'll just plug my headphones into the H1n and it seems to be working. I did a test at mictest.
I don't seem to be able to revisit the initial Audio IF vs Card Reader option; it seems that I chose Card Reader at some point, and now I can't change it. Do you have any idea how to do that?
The act of plugging the USB cable into a computer that is switched on seems to be the trigger for getting the Audio I/F vs Card Reader choice. Then use the up down keys to choose either. If you don't see the choice, try another USB cable, or switch the recorder off then on again and plug into the computer. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest, other than a firmware update.

known as a banker's lamp here in the UK fyi
Really appreciate this video🙏I am new to RUclips and this is my first field recorder and this was so helpful thank you❤️x
THank you! great instruction without the 'fluff' and stuff
Lav mic is an old one purchased from Radio Shack when they were still around. I like its audio quality.

*thanks Sir * I was looking for the solutions , and you video helped me out , cheers from syria
You are a king and a life saver 👍🏼🐧❤
what's your lav mic?
Great comprehensive review! May I ask what camera you are using to record this video? Thanks!
Thanks for the enquiry. I used the Fujifilm X-T2.
Very informative. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Hi I have ordered one of these units for band Rehearsals. Can the takes be used in all Digital Audio workstations? I use Reaper.
The formats it records in are .WAV and .mp3. I would imagine these would work in any sound editor.
I don't seem to be able to revisit the initial Audio IF vs Card Reader option; it seems that I chose Card Reader at some point, and now I can't change it. Do you have any idea how to do that?
USB CABLE change is the only fix for this problem
Download ASIO driver to use it as an usb mic. There wouldn't be any sound delays and quality would be better
How to use H1n zoom recorder for live recording to computer. For example Play Guitar.
thanks for the observations. helpful. what are you using to prop up that monitor above your laptop? I have the same setup though yours seems much more stable. thanks again.
Monitor is on a wall mount specifically made for computer monitors. From Best Buy, I believe.

@@phototopics1156 Thanks.
Will it record wav or mp3 when connected to a laptop? Thanks
No. I don't think it will record once connected to USB.
It's a USB micro b that goes into the h1n

I do the exact same steps and mine turns into a really crappy computer speaker.
I need this mic
