Making It Yourself - The Sliver Kiridashi - Knife Build

  • I was trying to clean up my work space and came across this very thin off cut of 1095 steel. I was about to throw it away, but then I thought to myself I wonder if I could make this in to a knife. It was very thin and light so I knew I would have to add some weight to it. So I dug around my scraps bin and found a piece of brass that I could use as a handle material, this would add the needed weight. I started by cutting off the tip of what would become the blade with a hacksaw. Then I used my belt sanders to clean up the rough shape and added the bevel to the blade. I refined the bevel using my bastard file, i'm not very good at free hand grinding. Then I shortened the overall length by removing a portion of the steel with my angle grinder. I then center punched my pin holes. I just eyeballed this so I had to center punch the blade several times until I finally got closer to the middle. Since this will be covered by the handles I don't mind the extra divets. Then I drilled my pin holes. I then heat treated the blade and cut up some of the brass for the handles. I cut oversized pieces of the brass so it would be easier to drill the pin holes for the handles, accuracy is not my strong suit. I did some rough shaping of the handles and then epoxied everything together. After the epoxy set I cut off the excess pins and began shaping the handles. I really didn't know what I was going for I just removed material slowly until I found a shape I liked. After all theat was done I sharpened the blade using some sandpaper and a leather strop. I think this is a cool looking little blade especially considering it was headed for the trash bin. Thanks for watching!

Ugghhh... the tool noises were too loud. I couldn't find my volume button, so it was excruciating. That's 10 minutes of my life I will never get back. Also, if I had all of those high-end, expensive material manipulating devices I could have made that too. Dan the Maker Man... more like Dan the make-something-that-is-impossible-for-other-humans-to-make Man. Unsubscribe... wait! Re-subscribe. I thought about it and am now regretting the length of this comment. Oh well. Sometimes I start typing before I start thinking. It's a sickness really. You know I love ya, Dan. It's beautiful. I hope this comment won't negate our free boots arrangement.

Hi Dan. Thanks for the video. I will be trying this build some time soon.
I was worried for you when you were drilling your second scale pin holes around the 6 minute mark; if your drill bit had seized your sharpened blade could have potentially spun into your fingers or wrist. I have made this mistake before, but, fortunately, I was not cut….. underwear check was in order.
I learned that clamping my work to the bed or setting it in a small vice is the safer way to go.
    Thanks again for the video.

Hahaha. I knew I would make multiple punches because even when I measure I still don't get it right. But this time it hit me it doesn't matter how many times I punch it because the handle will cover the marks. Saved me about 15 minutes of trying to measure and mark the exact center which is always a pain with a curved surface. Thanks for the kind words I'm trying!
