    Aiming a blowtorch at a full gas cannister scared me a lot, but your kiridashi came out awesome, big kudos!

    Good job, there was a man making knives from files in South Florida but they were expensive I like this design

    Well done brother, good build. And for those who comment on “Japanese steel”. The design of the weapon profile is what gives it its name, not the contents of the steel. A traditional or modern made Kiridashi is still a kiridashi. And having lived in japan i can say that not all new Japanese blades are made in the old traditional manner. “Nough said.

      I agree, it's important to get in and actually start creating something (both the video and the knife itself). A lot of people never get past thinking about posting a vid or drawing out a design for a knife. You're the real deal. That being said, safety is important and a vise for your drilling rig would be a sound investment.

    Nice job but as an engineer I see one major fault. You have hardened the cutting edge but not tempered it. That edge will be so hard that there will be a risk of chipping or even breaking. Definitely needs tempering, its not hard to do.

    • @FBPrepping
      @FBPrepping 6 лет назад +1

      From one engineer to another, he did tempered (english is not my native language but I believe the term is correct), what he did not do was the annealing to relief the internal stress a little bit. And that bench drill needs to be operated in a safer manner, for God s sake. :).

    • @JasonGroom
      @JasonGroom 5 лет назад +3

      It was not annealed through 2 to 3 cycles of hearing it up to critical (nonmagnetic temp) then naturally coming to room temp. This is generally called normalizing. After that it should be able to be hardened, then for a file it is actually about 400 degrees F for 1 to 2 hours, then cool to room temp naturally, then repeated 1 more cycle. You are looking for a straw color in the metal. After that polish it up and you will have a blade hard enough to hold an edge for a long time, but soft enough not to break even dropped

    Ruins temper. Tempers. Re-ruins temper. Drills at high speed ruining the drill. Sands into the edge on high speed. Can't sharpen a chisel grind. Lorte help this guy 🤦🏻‍♂️.

    • @JasonGroom
      @JasonGroom 5 лет назад

      It was traditional a very hard edge knife, with a very mild softening just enough to stop it from breaking. It would let it hold a very sharp edge through lots of abuse, like leather or wood work.

    You missed the most important part. Kiridashi are made from laminated steel. There is a very hard, brittle steel that forms the edge, and a mild, soft steel that reinforces that. This is what makes a superior blade. You only have one type steel from an old file. I t looks like a kiridashi but only superficially. Iit is a very poor cousin.

    • @CHUNKYNUGGET666

      tool steel is far superior
