Here's an Orthodox understanding and teaching on this issue:
"You are not “gay” or “homosexual.” You were not “born this way.” You are men and women created in the image and likeness of GOD! You were all designed by Him for everlasting life in His Kingdom. You struggle with carnal temptations and spiritual passions, like every single man and woman since the fall of Adam and Eve. In other words you are human.
Sin does not characterize you. Passions do not define you. Do not self-identify with any sin or any passion. You are not your sin. If you are a Christian and believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Son and Word of the living God, True God of True God, the Redeemer and Saviour of all mankind, then you must reject and abandon the “gay” or “homosexual” identity or label. “You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)." - Fr. Ioannes Apiarius

Thank you Fr. John! I'm glad you call out Bartholomew's role in the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. I witnessed for myself an angry activist rally at the Kiev-caves Lavra calling for a takeover just a few years ago. I feel that the schism caused by Constantinople was the final straw of the breakdown of peace in Ukraine.

Thank You for this Amazing Video and God Bless Your Work. After learning I am an Orthodox Christian, every gay person I have encountered says two things. I am supposed to love everyone (and I do) but I reply that the reason I often avoid them is that I believe it's wrong to associate too much with open sinners. I offer my help and prayers, then I leave it up to them. I also get the response that the wording in the Bible is "incorrect" and that being a homosexual is ok. Ask anyone that was living in Sodom and Gomorrah if they agree, is my usually reply.

being gay is a sin. Just like all the sin that I commit. Sin is sin. Gay folks are welcome to our church. The problem is when you come to church asking God to accept your sin. when I go to church I ask God to forgive me of my sins. Not accept the one sin i like the most.

If only that is all they are seeking, but no, LBGTQ wants to compel churches to SANCTIFY or consecrate as 'holy', their identify, behavior and proclivities, as equal and as natural and 'good' as heterosexuals. Church is the last bulwark against this insanity, if Church caves in, it's all over. Civilization collapse.

_The Orthodox Church_ by the recently-departed Metropolitan Kallistos Ware is pretty much the standard introduction to the history of the Orthodox churches from Pentecost up to the present day. A necessary read for anyone unfamiliar with first-millennium Christianity and the tradition of the Eastern church in the second millennium. Very accessible, this is the very first book you should read.
_The Orthodox Way_ also by Ware is more or less the companion book to the first one, covering Orthodox theology as opposed to strictly history. Also a very readable book, its overview of the ancient Christian understandings of God, man and the relationship between God and man -- preserved to this day in its fullness in the Orthodox tradition -- have lent it a credibility and utility as learning material even in Protestant seminaries.
These two books will give you an entry-level foundation to the depth of the riches found in the Orthodox tradition. Depending on what your personal inclinations are (eg. theology, philosophy, history, ascetic literature, hagiography, etcetera) there are many different resources you can check out. Some of it can get pretty intense pretty quick, so don't rush yourself. In the order of the different subjects I just listed, I'll recommend one book each, to give you an idea of some possible further reading:
_The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church_ by Vladimir Lossky
_The Tragedy of Philosophy_ by Sergei Bulgakov
_The Christian Tradition_ series by Jaroslav Pelikan (arguably the best in-depth historical examination of the entire Christian tradition; if I recall correctly Pelikan began the series as a devout Lutheran but through the course of his exploration of church history converted to Orthodoxy by the end of it).
_The Paradise of the Holy Fathers_ by Palladius of Galatia (translated by E. A. Wallis Budge)
_The Prologue of Ohrid_ by St Nikolai Velimirovich
God bless you and your pursuit of truth. Hope this is helpful to you.

There's 3 books with the title The Orthodox Church. One by Fr Sergius Bulgakov (1930s I think. Worth reading. This was the first book in English translation), one by Fr John Meyendorf (late 50s. Good stuff on church history, which is helpful coming from Catholic background) and the most popular by Bishop Kalistos Ware, originally done in the 60s when he was Timothy Ware. A standard now.)
I like Meyendorf the best. He's a historian. He has another book Byzantine Theology where he goes deeper in that direction, but his Orthodox Church is my fave. Bulgakov is controversial, but not really regarding this book. He was a commie atheist, Ware was Anglican, and Meyendorf a cradle Orthodox.
Fr Thomas Hopko has lots of podcasts on Ancient Faith site, many on church history. He's a good free resource all the way around. Former Prof of Dogmatics. Can't say enough about him. Straight ahead, no bullshit.

As far as homosexuallity is concern it is just demonic thought. Nothing else. If someone works not to receive that thought it will finish the temptation. If they accept the thought they have to fight for a long time. Thats how it is done in many monasteries and in the history of many Fathers

The percentage of homosexuals in high Authority in the Catholic Church such as Cardinals Bishops and most likely even the pope himself rise to be homosexuals. So it may very well be 30% of the lowly priest but the rest of the political structure has probably 80% homosexual if not more. How else would you explain all the corruption in the church being approved of and promoted.

@@JosephSciambra Just one more reason I'm Orthodox.

  • @wkrapek
    @wkrapek Год назад +2

I’ve been dissatisfied with both sides of this argument for years. So I rolled up my sleeves, hit the Greek and Hebrew and archaeology, and drew my own conclusions on the Bible and homosexuality. Here are some:
Tarsus was a major center of Graeco-Roman philosophy when Paul grew up there. Rabbi Gamaliel trained his students in philosophy. All that shows in Paul’s writing. Philosophers aspired to make citizens into Spartans. The opposite of that is ‘malakoi.’ Weak. This was well known at the time, and is true for modern Greek today. George Floyd was malakoi. I am a homosexual.
Leviticus 20:13, properly translated, reads, “If a man lies with male bed of woman (Heb. iššah), they have committed a ritual abomination. They shall be killed. Their blood is upon them.” The Hebrews were Amorite/Hittite mixes. (Ezekiel 16:3, 45) Išhara is the Amorite Goddess of Weddings. They had a “bed of Išhara.” Apparently involving cult prostitution. And in this case a male prostitute. So I read this as a Hebrew version of that. This is meant ONLY for heterosexuals. The Septuagint translation is consistent with that interpretation.
Two men can get married. But they have to act like men. Jonathan and David model that in 1 Samuel 18:1-5. There, Jonathan marries David just as YHWH marries Israel in Ezekiel 16:8-14. Notice was David does afterwards: he commands Israel’s armies. The opposite of a woman. The imagery of both unions - hetero and homo - gracefully counterpoint each other in the Song of the Bow (2 Samuel 1:17-27).
Also: 1 Samuel Chapters 17-18 are clearly modeled on The Iliad Books 15-16. Where Achilles gives his armor to Patroclus. He has a Freudian slip, and realizes he’s been in love with his best friend all along. This is the crucial, psychological pivot around which the whole Epic turns. IMHO.
Nevertheless: Saul accuses Jonathan of violating the Leviticus law. (1 Samuel 20:30) The “perverse and rebellious woman” is an allusion to Išhara. Who, as it happens, is also the goddess who presided over Hittite oaths. This also shows up in the text: the Priests at Nob Hill (1 Samuel Chapters 21&22) almost certainly swore a Hittite loyalty oath to Saul. Such a priestly oath has been recovered, and the fate they and their families suffered is exactly what was prescribed in the oath. So she’s perverse because it’s a gay marriage, and rebellious because oaths descended from Heaven, to the Sovereign, down to his Nobility, and on down to the people. David and Jonathan’s lateral, unsanctioned oath clearly violated that.
It is my opinion that Christian leaders for centuries have been sloppy, lazy, and tone deaf when it comes to Sacred Writ’s position on gay men like me. And from there: MURDEROUS. You boys left this hole open for the Devil, and he’s driven right through.
    FIX IT.

That's a neat opinion and all, but it contradicts the universal consensus of the people who were alive when the books of scripture were written and who learned directly from the authors, in person, while they were still alive.
The safest and most plausibly correct opinion, then, is that homosexuality is a sin.
