Want You Gone - Frank Sinatra Big Band Swing Version (The 8-Bit Big Band)

- We're back with another incredible piece from the Portal series, here's "Want You Gone" totally reimagined in the style of Frank Sinatra's arrangement of "I've Got You Under my Skin" (originally arranged by the great Nelson Riddle), and sung by the amazing singer/trumpet player Benny Benack III.
It's a testament to great song writing when your lyrics and melody can function in an entirely different context like this, so huge thanks to Jonathan Coulton for this great piece of music!
This song and more coming soon to our 3rd album "Backwards Compatible" but in the mean time

Guess now I just gotta do "You Wouldn't Know" from Lego Dimensions and the Sinatra/GLaDOS trilogy is complete!
I just want more Sinatra-esque covers.
Please do! Take your time, do it right by the song and your reputation, but if it comes out I'll be sure to buy it.
You don't haaaave to.....but it would be pretty cool
I think there is another Glados Song, not used in the game, named "Don't say goodbye". It can be another great idea, but take your time ! We can wait !
Honestly, I find You Wouldn't Know to be a perfect topper to the trifecta of GLaDOS songs!
HUGE. SUCCESS.

Where is my new episode Jesse!!!!!! You better be ready to talk about Mandalorian season 2, haha
Didnt expect to see jesse here (edit: my stupid ass misspelled his name)
Ayyy!
We got Cox!
There is a parallel universe out there where videogames were big in the 50's and they hired Frank Sinatra to sing something like this
You totally nailed my head canon for this arrangement haha
@@The8BitBigBandOmG
@@The8BitBigBand I heard that was also the headcanon of the developers of Cuphead, only the 30s instead of the 50s.
@miketandy6329 look up Tennis For Two. It's an actual video game from the 50s (and it isn't a Pong clone)
Bro... Frank Sinatra made this song about his Ex-Wife!!!
im making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.

You just keep on trying till you run out of cake,
Woah, I just came back to this video after a few years and Benny's "How did you get in my room" at 1:15 is I'm pretty sure a reference to how Sinatra greeted his crowds at the Las Vegas Sands whenever he started. You can hear him say it on his iconic album Sinatra at the Sands. Such a great detail!
Thats exactly what we were thinking when we threw it in last minute at the recording session haha I had just listened to that album on the way to the studio
1:15 i think you mean
@@The8BitBigBand are u guys ever gonna do more portal musics?
This is the sequel we wanted and needed
As good a sequel as Portal 2 was!
And now we wait on part three
@@marieu6 they had a waiting stream a week ago with comments open
Exactly 😁
The animation though. It just shows so much character and humour.
For example: Imagine a highly complex machine, with great intelligence and intellect who has great homicidal tendencies, was just so *done* with you that they made a whole musical number about how they gave up on trying to kill you and just want’s you somewhere not their problem.
That speaks volumes.
Great work guys!
I honestly did not know how you guys were going to pull this one off. They original arrangement does not really lend itself to the swing style. You guys showed me that it can be done!
Definitely took a while for me to concoct this! But that bass line from the original swung kinda reminded me of the bass clarinet line from "I've Got You Under My Skin" Sinatra so once I had that idea it just took off from there
I was thinking the same thing man, not at all disappointed with the result, Charlie Rosen and the rest of the band, you are absolute legends, thank you for your amazing performances
@@The8BitBigBand amazing... can you please give us a master class on arranging? I feel like there’s a gold mine in your brain
The funny thing is, if you go back and listen to Sinatra's songs, many of them have a similar tone to this song.
Perhaps the clue you all are looking for is in the Title? i.e. The Frank Sinatra Orchestra?
They should definitely do a "Jump Up, Super Star!" cover with this guy.
I had never thought of that before. Now I need it
looks like they already have an arrangement in the works with grace kelly instagram.com/p/CDmIl-EH1UL/?igshid=1lrlb3mylm0ts
@@BigKittyMedia Then I guess it's highly unlikely their gonna make another cover with him. I really wanted to see what it would sound like if Frank Sinatra sang something from a Mario game that had his kinda style. Thanks for the info tho.
Like maybe a jazz version I guess it would be sick though

the part where Chell is running from the Strider is really funny because Portal 2 takes place canonically during The Combine’s occupation of Earth
How is it that I only was suggested this now?!? Incredible, really good Sinatra impression.
I'm going to play it in the room when my kids are nearby, and see how long it is before they recognize the lyrics. :)

Gotta give props to Taylor Russell for throwing in that Half Life 2 reference at 1:32 , this fella clearly knows their Valve Lore
I always loved how Portal technically takes place in the same universe as Half Life. Had show a lil' nod to it somehow! Plus the Strider was fun to animate so it was a double win in my eyes, haha.
So glad to collab on this sequel...we made it FOR the fans and hope all you guys dig it! Kudos to @the8bitbigband and Charlie Rosen for making this happen and bringing me back - I love you guys! Sinatra/Portal ftw...
Legendary singing and playing my guy! Love your collabs with Charlie and the band
Your voice is so great
You're incredible man, love your work.
You nailed this song and Still Alive! Love these pieces of art!
Do you happen to have any voice training tips for range? I'm trying to prepare for a party once this COVID stuff blows over, since people want me to sing, but I can't quite hit some of the notes. Your voice worked really well for this as well :)
Most swing remixes either suck or they’re not even swing at all. This however, takes the cake - and I’m not lying.
Robert Crawshaw That’s the joke ☺️
The cake is NOT a lie
The cake is a lie!
This sounds like a trap.
Maybe I'm just the old guy -- never played Portal, never heard of Jonathan Coulton. My grandfather called Sinatra "Frankie Sinus" back in the 1940s. Nonetheless, I'm blown away by how this arranger and the 8-Bit Band channeled the Nelson Riddle swing and sound that made Sinatra so appealing. Clever work ! Satire, homage, clever re-interpretation all in one !!
You have had 2 years to play portal, have you yet
Please play it. There's a reason it's the #1 rated game on Steam.

@@ionisator1 its beautiful game
Their rendition of Still Alive was amazing, so just knowing that this actually exists has made my day.
Dude totally fuckin same
I like your profile picture.
I adore the drummer, he always gets so into it, I love how at 1:58 he appears to be acting along as though he's smacking test subjects with his drumsticks. The dude's got charisma for days, and that's saying something when you've got the singer in frame pouring liquid gold into your ears.
"We don't know if there's gonna be a Portal 3 or not!"
Something about that line just cracks me up, I love it. Great improv, great singing, and great trumpeting from Benny once again, and of course a stellar performance from the whole band! You guys are great, and I hope you're all staying safe through this crazy year.
I hope Benny secrets portal 3 into existence with that banter!!
Valve can't count to 3
@Old Acc Is this what you've been waiting for? Say 1, 2, and 4

You called me?
"huge success" doesn't even come close to describing this absolute masterpiece
it's literally beyond words how good this is
One of the few amazing things to come out of 2020, can't believe we survived long enough to see it
In this arrangement it sounds like such an empowering song about someone you finally manage to throw out of your life. Like a male version of "I will survive".
You mean like "ive got to be me" ? Steve Lawrence? 😮 try it
YEESSSS I'VE BEEN NEEDING THIS ALL MY LIFE
1:56
I’m playing this directly after the 1st chorus.
God this is such a satisfying sequel, you can tell they're really feeling this one.
Everything about this is perfect. The singing, the arrangement, the jazziness and the talent of the whole band is just immaculate.
I’m looking forwards to this!
This is something I never expected but appreciate immensely. Thank you to everyone who made this a reality.
OMG two of my favorite things, portal and jazz! That little bass and vocal bars took my breathe away, it was groovy! And those bluesy licks from the keys (piano) AHHHHHH. I was fan boying so hard!!!
This song always put a smile on my face.
Thanks.
Benny Benack is once again incredible, as well as the rest of the band. Insanely good job.
I really love this, this put a smile on my face, makes me nostalgic with my first time playing the Portal game last year, reminded me how much I loved the experience
I've waited for this ever since I heard the Still Alive cover. I'm gonna love this.
Update: Yeah, I love this.
god this is just perfect. as a huge jazz and portal fan, this is the PERFECT combination for people like me! great work to everyone involved!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS I audibly gasped at this news and my husband asked what was wrong XD I’m so excited!!!!
I’m just mad it took me this long to realize this existed, loved the first one, so happy the second got the same treatment!
This truly is a triumph
Well Damm RUclips for showing me MY MOST EXPECTED video of 2020 just 2 WEEKS LATE
Valve has to hire these guys to write the GLaDOS end credits song for Portal 3.
They would do a great job but we don't need a Portal 3.
I felt in llove with all of u on this video, the atention in the animations is beutifull too
i like how they animated a strider chasing chell to her iminent death, really connects half-life and portal together
Absolute love the bass clarinet in this song
kinda the music where i would love to take some friends into a bar and just get some drinks and enjoy the music
I love how the music is so similar to Sinatra’s “I’ve got you under my skin” in the beginning. You’ll really hear it if you listen to these back to back.
I’ve been waiting so long for this
Dude, I just realized...
They drew attention to the companion cube during "Oh, did you think I meant you?", so GLaDOS said goodbye to the cube there.
And in the end, after Chell was kicked out, the companion cube also bade his farewell, so to speak. I loved this :D
I've been waiting for this for so long!
This gives off gigantic Christmas vibes and I love it
I've been listening to "Stay Alive" almost everyday and always asking when this is comming out!
Amazing! keep the great work
I've been an audio engineer for studio's and events for 7 years.
But this man's vocals give me the most enjoyable spine chills.
I know it isn't an official Portal game, but another song that would be cool to hear in this style is "Time and Time Again" from Portal Stories: Mel. "Android Hell" by Harry101 would also be pretty neat.
Maybe it's possible... they did cover a FNAF fan song...
This is one of my favorite things ever. It's almost over-stimulating and I only watch it when I'm in a mood to handle over-the-top greatness
I'm GLaD to Still be Alive to hear this Huge Success!
Honestly, who could be GLaD-er?
"Well here we are again, it's always such a pleasure..."
Just, perfect❤
YEEEESSSS YEEEESSS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, THERE IS THE ROUND 2
I did it, I found the first comment.
This is the first time I've seen 'jazz covers of things' done well. Like, ever. This is inspired.
AAAAAAAAAA my day was made. This is a Frank Sinatra tribute I would recommend to my fellow Sinatra fans!!!
Benny sang and trumpeted amazingly, Taylor's animation was *chef kiss* so damn cute and dynamic, the band was 100/10 as ever, the arrangement really brings me back to those Capitol albums (Nelson Riddle is the OG you're right, the shoutout to I've Got You Under My Skin is legendary...) and boy it brought a tear to my eye... I love the original but this version, with the strings and swing, knocked it out of the park :D
Also I LOVE how the singer referenced the "How'd you get in my room?" from Sinatra at the Sands and the whole quip about Portal 3 was such a nice joke for Portal fans and of course, fits with the snarky stage persona of Frank Sinatra himself (but that test subject thing was so Glados. Imagine if she sounded like Sinatra xD). Super incredible cover, and in the words of the Chairman, that was a gas! :D
Edit: why did I say this
strait power
lol thanks. I was an am a Sinatra nerd it seems.
i love how the animation down there, it's too cute to handle
The little Half Life cameos really show that the band here is extremely knowledgeable on their content when making it!
This singers range and tone combine with the band to make an immaculate cover. Keep up the amazing work.
That little lick on the way out absolutely slays holy shit
"Well here we are again"
And we are so happy to be here for this sequel!
This sounds so damn good. ^_^
Personally, I always found this song to be kind of a somber thing. To me it sounds like GladOs is trying to convince _herself_ that you need to go, simply because she knows exactly who you are in relation to the human that is the basis for her whole personality, and because she knows you two will likely be at each other’s throats again if she doesn’t push you away now.
That being said, I do like the cheerier tone of this one. Gonna have to favorite this one.
Just hearing this and thinking back to when I first beat Portal 2, brings a tear to my eye.
The little pixel animations were awesome!
You guys are so criminally underreated, not only is the video well edited but there is even animartion
HUGE SUCCES
The pixel art is as amazing as ever, if not better
