  • The Citarum river in Indonesia is the world’s most polluted river. A reporter teamed up with international scientists to investigate the causes and consequences of this pollution.
One of the main polluters is the fashion industry: 500 textile factories throw away their wastewater directly into the Citarum river. An investigation revealed alarming levels of toxic chemicals in the water, local crops, and even children's hair, highlighting the severe health risks facing those who rely on the Citarum.
In response to these shocking findings, the Indonesian government has tightened wastewater regulations, and the president has announced an ambitious plan to clean up the river. Under public pressure, several fashion brands have also committed to stricter oversight of their Indonesian suppliers, promising changes that could help prevent further harm.
This documentary was produced by Yemaya and directed by Frederic Cristea. It was first released in 2018.
