@@dvlefttrite generalization. Chomsky is way behind in technology. He still thinks people don't read books despite the introduction of e-readers decades ago. And apparently smartphones are just 'toys'. Shall we ask people from developing countries about that, because they're revolutionizing their economies. You can do *so much* with a smartphone now. Chomsky's conception of advertising is also shockingly naive. Apparently there were no adverts at ball games when he was a child. Can we just check that real quick? That's the most easily demonstrable of Chomsky's many false generalizations, but somehow I doubt it will be. I venture my memory of advertising is more reliable, and it always followed public tastes, not the other way around. When this grand scheme was supposed to have hatched (in the 1950s), appliances were essentially industrial-grade, and were expected to last decades. Commercials actually made a virtue of how economical consumables were. The only reason things became more disposable since was to reduce prices, and again, that's on the consumer, looking to the bottom line.
My hope is that after this most recent election we see an uprising of regular people protesting and engaging in activism to rival that during the 60s! Professor Chomsky is an absolute treasure!
No doubt professor Chomsky isn’t very popular with corporate institutions and republicans, when he passes away, they will privately celebrate, however, Norm Chomsky is and has always been a champion of the common man, a voice for true democracy….
He’s not popular with the Democratic Party, either. The closest he has come to supporting is a “lesser evil” argument. He doesn’t equate the two, because there are differences (though not those that they often pretend to have) but he talks about the “the two party leadership and their financial backers” because of the substantial overlap 1:00:38
This is brilliant and motivational. The challenge, ironically, is organising. With such a jump in communication tech and platforms it should be easy to organise and inform. The reality is quite different. We owe Mr. Chomsky a lot. We mostly learn through observation and he has been a great and important influence in that respect.

I thought that the first bailout happened in 2009, Allan Greenspan was an economic genius, American Democracy was created by the people. I didn't know that it was run by corporations. Now, I think of our government as an extension of the movie The Godfather. Corporations are the godfathers, politicians are the bosses' informants, and soldiers are hitmen. Some soldiers learned these hard facts, (because they believed that they were the "freedom fighters," only to learn that they were lied to). Nothing worse than to be lied to.
Exactly right. Called "America's Most Decorated Soldier," Major General Smedley Butler (1881-1940) realized he was lied to about war and wrote a short book called "War is a Racket" (1935). A must-read to understand the real purpose of our military.
@@ronaldreagan-ik6hz No, this is a brilliant summation of the truth. Reagan was installed to overturn the gains of the middle class achieved over the previous decades. Since then, corporations have succeeded in taking over almost the entire government (they have their sights on anything intended to serve the "public" and not themselves). Do you think the recent attacks on public education are really about the curriculums? No, they're intended to destroy public education and the taxes that pay for it.
Noam Chomsky is the kind of leader humanity needs. Intelligent, reason-based, and visionary. America's right-wing leaders today have none of these characteristics and the left has few and these are disorganized. Humanity is on course to destroy itself and has been since the industrial revolution began. While that is unfortunate we should keep in mind that humanity is one species on the planet, and if we make the planet uninhabitable for humans the Earth will keep spinning and life will continue. A few million years after humans are gone the Earth will be teeming with life. Even if all life was wiped out by humanity the planet will remain. It's an existential crisis for humanity and other living things but not at all for the planet.

It used to frustrate me with the people I know, I want to help them, or at least share relevant info, and most could care less. It used to really frustrate me, but then it occurred to me, that's just the way people are. The whole country and world will go down the drain before they admit that they need to wake up and pay attention, and probably do something.
This is happening at a much faster rate at present. Most people don’t make time to learn… they would much rather stay on Facebook. Tic Toc etc etc.

Best ever version of Chomsky's thesis! His usual expert scholarly tone is edited down to concise vernacular, w/o sacrificing any supreme authority. A sweeping tour de force.
The best way to control less fortunate people is by scaring them financially and emotionally. Inflation does both.
Partly but the best way to distract people is to convince them their freedom is linked to their consumption.
I agree. I think many of us have been expressing the same thoughts for years. The difference is that I'm poor as dirt and, thanks to inflation, about to become homeless and he is worth 10 million dollars, so he doesn't have to worry about it as much.
