I am continuously amazed at the skill of acting that Andreas Katsulas displayed - it's sometimes easy to forget, because he makes it look so effortless, but he's acting through an amazing amount of make-up and prosthetic overlays on his face and head. But I never ONCE thought - here's a guy in make-up playing an alien. No - that was G'Kar! Always! And he did this for 5+years. Simply amazing. You are missed, Mr. Katsulas, but rest easy, you and your work are not forgotten.
and especially in this scene how easily he transitioned from laughing buffoon to stoic philosopher. you don't even notice until he slips into the shadows and leaves his magnificent words behind to impact your psyche.
@@oldfrend And that slipping into the shadows was a great bit of staging - without that shadow, G'Kar sitting back rather than remaining forward still conveys that he's disengaging, that he's said all he has to say, and is done now. With the shadow, sitting back not only gives us the body language, it also provides a direct metaphor - he's fading out of the picture, metaphorically leaving the scene, telling the viewer that he's no longer part of the scene.
Indeed, Andreas was an often under-appreciated actor, playing supporting roles, often as heavies like 'Executive Decision' and the 'One Arm Man' in 'The Fugitive' (movie). It is unfortunate that he never achieved better roles, though, imo, G'Kar was the pinnacle of his career, he nailed that character and frankly, my personal favorite of the series. Like his character, G'kar, remarked...."A true artist is never appreciated in his own time...." 0:42 ...so true.
What G'Kar said here is true, you can learn much from silence. At lot of people discount lessons from sci fi, but they're often based on universal truths. That's what makes good sci fi timeless. I can say, a lot of G'kar as a character helped me cope and deal with combat related PTSD.
When G'Kar first appeared he was militaristic and angry, a warrior. As the show progressed, he grew more philosophical, more at peace with himself. He even managed to develop a(grudging) respect for Molari, perhaps recognizing the inner torment that drove him, having recognized his own demons
It was pointed out that early on, G'kar had few friends but plenty of political might. Later on, he had plenty of friends but his political clout disappeared....Molari had plenty of friends but was considered a political nothing...and later he became emperor of his entire people...and not a single friend I'm existence ...except G'kar, who kept his promise to kill him if he ever became like those both of them hated.
@@miafillene4396 Everyone always overlooks Vir. And if you read the novels, Londo had more friends than you might think, even at the end. Senna Refa, Timov, daughter of Algul, Delenn and John Sheridan, Michael Garibaldi, and arguably Galen. Maybe Emperor Mollari didn't have as many friends as Ambassador Mollari appeared to back before the Narn-Centauri War, but he had more than just G'Kar.

My husband just convinced me to watch this show. It looks dated now but still the words are powerful. This show is so well written. G'Kar and Londo are my favorite characters. Such polar opposites yet profoundly effective. It's not just their words, but it's the delivery of each line that makes them outstanding. I am not sure that I would have loved G'Kar had he been portrayed by someone else. This man embodied this character so brilliantly and with such poise and presence that even years later he still gives chills. He is truly missed.
+VICSTERISPISSED Good writing lasts forever. I've used a lot of these quotes in my comparative religion class during discussions and they never fail to stop people for a minute and make them think . When J. Michael Straczynski wrote this he was really not just writing a bit of fiction, he was writing to inspire generations to come. His words, with Andreas' delivery struck right to the heart of everyone who has ever watched this show. That's good writing.
+IamTenzin You are so correct in the fact that "Good writing lasts forever..." Back in the middle '80's Ron Pearlman played the role of Vincent in the TV Series "Beauty and The Beast"; he often read aloud or quoted poetry from poets such as Shelly, Keates, and of course Shakespear: "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments, for love does not alter when..." He made a tape/CD of these poetry readings and insisted on being in full costume/makeup for the recording session; his voice and music are remarkable. Much like Andreas he embodied the role/character he was portraying and was mezmorizing in doing so. I loved watching Babylon 5 when it was on TV and and could hardly wait to see the next show. Now here I am in my middle 70's am so glad to have found this group of like minded people who, while diverse in so many ways such as age, socio economics, cultural, philisophical and religious views; yet here we all are willing to talk about it, share their insights, and what they've learned from the writings of JMS a couple of decades later.
Judith Hendrixon I remember that series fondly. No matter how hard they tried, they could never quite duplicate the emotion in every production of that has since followed. Ron and Linda really brought their characters to life and it's unfortunate that the series ended so soon. Still, it was very moving role for both of them. Sounds like something I'll need to go find once again. Thanks for the inspiration.
When JMS hired the set designers, he specifically looked for those who worked in theatre. One reason is that he wanted people who knew how to change a set easily, quickly and without too much money involved in the design. Looking back you can see the theatrical in this show, G'Kar leaning back into the shadow is a prime example of theatre working to enhance the scene, to best deliver the final words from a character so they can carry weight.

You can learn much from silence." Truer words were never spoken. When I hear someone refer to Science Fiction as "stupid" or "for little kids", I think of this show and others, like Star Trek (Next Generation episode "Drumhead" anyone?) that demonstrate that while wisdom may come from some very strange places, it's origin in no way reduces the validity or profundity of said wisdom. I'm glad I never stopped loving and (more importantly) reading and watching Sci-Fi as I got older.
True vishnu79... it scenes like this that make the idea of a Babylon 5 reboot so hard to swallow... with Andreas Katsulas now descended I just can't image anyone bring the same poetry to the role of G'kar.
Vishnu79, very good insight to this and ST:TNG The Drumhead. Well written SciFi can have some of the most profound philosophical ideas and statements in it. And can stand the test of time in its meaning/intent. JMS made G'Kar the philosopher and poet of the series. It seems that character got all the best dialog in this area. And Andreas Katsulas did an amazing job bringing it to life. I'm re-watching B5 on Amazon now and am just amazed at how the storyline is so tight and flowing. The special effects now look dated, but the story and acting still stand well.
To be fair, the effects still don't look terrible, like some other shows. And, G'kar, and Marcus were both philosophers, and I am proud to say both have influenced many of my thoughts and ideals.
Simon - To be fair, only the hottest of flames can produce the strongest blades, be they be the weapons of battle, or be they the blades of the mind to cut through the distractions that grow like weeds up around it, that clear the way to the very core of that which truly matters: true enlightenment and betterment of not only oneself, but others you affect with your words, thoughts and actions. ... However, as much as I love B5 (favorite sci-fi show of all time), I'd like to offer an answer to that question from an Orthodox Christian perspective of which I am: Truth and God are one and the same thing, a Person. God bless J. Michael Strazynski for the wonderful work he gave us in B5, an absolute masterpiece of story telling and character development!
Yes, pandemic. I was essential so no time to be by myself until I got sick. That whole month of December 2020 gave me much to think about. That virus was not a natural mutation. There was something in it that I felt besides hard flu like symptoms. It was not normal.
It is not the same. We have television and the internet. He had nothing forced into true silence without having to worry where the next meal was coming from, utilitues rent, no choices to make, no diversions or luxeries to induldge in. He had himself and his pen and paper. Ocassional visitors. Being imprisoned is an intense experience that can bring alot of perspective to a situation.
G'Kar never stopped becoming a more interesting character in this series. There was always a new side to him opening up. In every episode, he is a Work in Progress.
On the surface, the show seems to be about the crew of the station. But once you take time to reflect, they are all supporting cast to set the stage for the Epic of G'Kar and Londo. The big important story is about those two.
LONDO never stopped becoming a more interesting character, but going in the other direction. Two characters like that, in the same series! How lucky were we, growing up?!
You just received a graduate seminar is great acting. Katsulas takes the words of a script and utterly transforms them into his own dialogue. He "becomes". We shall likely never see this ever again. For some reason, Katsulas reminds me of the great Leo McKern - another actor who assumed the whole of his character.
I always loved that quote, "Everything out their has only one purpose to distract us" and "You can learn much from silence". I was always a loner and this really helped me reason with my own struggles. Through it I knew how to truly be myself
It is trivially easy to look over the dated visual effects when you have characters, performances, and writing of this caliber. What an epic tale, one that G'Kar is intimately woven into.
Bruh, this is my favorite sci fi series of all time…possibly the best written tv show of all time. It was far from trivial to get over the visuals and the 1st season which was basically the UN( I like this stuff though) They payoff is sublime, but it’s next to impossible to get sci-fi fans to give this show a go
katsulas was such a spectacular actor. its rare to find an actor who can pull you so deeply into the characters they play. the man truly had talent and you can tell he really enjoyed his work. so sad he passed away.
He's probably the main reason to play Primal on PS2/PS4. The gameplay is pretty lightweight and the writing not actually that amazing. But as one of the two protagonists, he gives the whole thing great depth and meaning just with his voice.

JMS never failed to seamlessly weave profound insight with humor. I still love how, when told his singing sounded like the wails of a tortured man, G'kar laughed. G'Kar: Sometimes I even sing! Garibaldi: I know, we got a petition. G'Kar: For or against? Garibaldi: Based on the sound, they think we're torturing you in here. **G'Kar laughs out loud.**
The way G'kar's face is half obscured by darkness and half illuminated by light, it's like it's showing him between universes or transitioning to a higher plane of existance. The music that accompanies his writing the book of G'kar certainly hints at the massive change of what those writings will eventually bring to himself and his people.
And that was one of the show's great strengths - even the relatively minor characters were interesting and, in Season 5, proved they could even step into the shoes of major characters. Garibaldi left Babylon 5 to marry Lise Edgars and help her run her company while living on Mars, leaving Zack Allan to run security, and Zack proved up to the job as well as an interesting character (even though my shipping of Zack and Lyta came to nothing). Ivanova left to lead the Rangers, leaving the XO slot open for Babylon 5 for David Corwin to step into, and again he did it well and was an interesting character. G'Kar left Babylon 5 leaving Ta'lon to take over as the Narn ambassador, and Marshall Teague did a great job. The fact that in its final season many of Babylon 5's roles were taken over by so-called secondary characters and it still held up so well is proof of the strength of its writing and acting.

@@nicholasdickens2801 It is difficult, even just laying in bed looking at the trees waving in the wind, my mind wanders conjuring a myriad of images and memories of sounds and music. Combined with tinnitus from operating farm equipment for decades without hearing protection(I was a foolish child and didn't understand the necessity until recently), it is virtually impossible for me to find silence.
I remember an old fantasy novel called "Tea with a Black Dragon." One of the main characters was attracted to warmth and stillness. He compared the other main character as being still like a tree filled with birds. Silence is where you find it. Some people can only find that silence with some form of sound.
such a magnificent and illuminating character arc. i can't think of a more well written one in anything i've witnessed. he went from a rather unlikable angry zealot to a philosopher soldier who's words paved the way for the future of the galaxy. would that we could all evolve so wonderfully.

I know there are some great actors out there, but the idea that anyone could owe and bring poetry to the role like Andreas did just same impossible at the very least... and sacrilege at the very most.
See I never wanted a reboot, when you had that group shot of the main characters "successors" at the end of the show, I was like, why not keep going with them? Ta'Lon, Vir, etc?
An 'expanded universe' would be nice. We know how the Dilgar War turns out but it'd be nice to see a series revolve around that anyway (that's a coupe of seasons right there). Crusade never went anywhere since it got cancelled, and the LOTR pilot was a shambles, but there's huge 'story space' left over eg what happens between Crusade and The Great Burn, and from there to when the last Human leaves Earth is almost completely unexplored.
+Krister Andersson What I like about the G'kar character is that we grow with him. he was vain, wilful and angry diplomat and grew into a sardonic, introspective and open minded philosopher, who campaigned for unity and peace. Andreas created a great character, since Nimoy's Spock.

I am constantly reminded that I truly wish there was a Book of G'kar to read. He had much hard won wisdom, for the greatest wisdom comes from suffering, and G'kar suffered much.
I love G'Kar, he was definitely a man of thinking, however, he has also been touched by Kosh. This is yet another example of the subtle prodding and nudgings from the Vorlons to the younger races. Who knows? The Vorlons MAY have even directly influenced the Book of G'Quan which later became the core of Narn philosophy!
Although Kosh influenced G'Kar, it is important to note that he did not override G'Kar's will in any way. He simply gave G'Kar a moment of clarity where his anger would be less of an interference, and used that to plead with him to change his ways. And here is where we see a big difference between G'Kar and Londo. Londo is warned many times about his path, but due to despair, laziness, and other reasons, he does not change. G'Kar is warned once, albeit more profoundly, about his ways. But he reflects on it and learns from it. In no way did either have their wills overriden, until the very end with Londo with the Drak. In the end, it was G'Kar's choice to take the message to heart.
You know, it's strange; over the last eight years, I've watched Babylon 5 through from beginning to end at least a couple three times. The way the political climate has gotten in the US, I've found watching B5 to be . . . oddly comforting. There are things about standing up and fighting for what is right against tyranny and against a regime that is corrupt and illegal that resonate very strongly with the Patriot in me.
It's what the United States was first founded on is why...the country is dying, but unfortunately, not enough people will band together to make things right because they have been taught to never think for themselves, that someone else will hand shit out to them if they just shut up and sit on their ass while others spoon-feed them. The U.S. has become weak of heart and soft in the mind. It's a sad thing to admit, but while I still respect the core of the country this is supposed to be, I am sorely disgusted with what America has become by-and-large.

it's funny you say that. when i first watched b5, one of the only things i hated about it was the portrayal of Clark and his totalitarian administration. 'how utter unlikely', my younger self thought. 'never would such a one dimensionally clownish villain be able to take over a real government of the people.' was B5 prophetic or were the people really just not worthy of the faith of a idealist scifi fan? needless to say, my faith was shaken by our recent history.
Babylon 5 is one of those shows that teaches us much about so many things. It should honestly be required watching(at least the plot essential episodes)

I think he is right. Sometimes, a long timeout could prove helpful. Let us realize how our life is going, what's important & who we are. I can only imagine someone who has spent time incarcerated could relate to this scene.

The genius of Andreas Katsulas is beyond my ability to describe. He was right......an artist is never appreciated in his own time. God I miss this man. I miss his work.
Andreas Katsulus was such a magnificent actor.....& this really helps to confirm it. Not merely what he says, but the way he slips back into the shadows as he finishes talking. Absolutely brilliant.
The body language there is entirely to his credit, but credit for the staging and lighting of it has to go to the crew behind the camera. That's one that might possibly have been in the script, but if not, credit goes to the director for the episode.
I used to intensely dislike series. GoT, Firefly, House, DS9, Big Bang, Parks n Rec, Friends, you name it. Tried them all, hated them all after a dozen episodes tops. Then one dear friend made me watch a bit of Babylon 5, and, well... I still intensely dislike series. But I have watched B5 several times over now, and I will again, in time. No other series I know about have such an awesome writing and acting all put together. None have an overarching story with definitive beginning, middle and end - which is, I think, the point. They are all incomplete stories that can end but never conclude. Character design also speaks volumes. Look at any modern sci-fi flick; look at how CGI has progressed, you'd expect movies go further from rubber masks and funny haircuts they had to do with in B5 (and even then, there were Shadows and Vorlons, totally non-humanoid aliens), but no, there's even less effort put into that. Look, I'm an alien, I have green face with antennae! FFS, dude, a series older than you have done it better - without the technology you have today. Now tell me more about how it's too hard and expensive, yeah. And the dialogues. "While all answers are replies, not all replies are answers". My. Just. My. It's russian classic literature level of writing. I have heard people drop one-liners and exerpts from Babylon 5, and most of them don't even know where it came from. The highest form of recognition for a writer is when someone goes around impressing girls with your verses not even knowing the source. I have never seen that phenomenon happen to series. To my knowledge, B5 is the only one to get to that anonymous cultural integration. Might be different on the USA side, but it's definitely true for Europe (and most likely, Asia as well). Oh well; enough ranting.

This is one of the scenes that, for me, truly brings out the important role that the human species would play in the galaxy. Our ability to relate to each of the races, and to face down both the Vorlon and Shadows was crucial to the formation of the Alliance, and the ability of the younger races to progress. Garibaldi's friendship with G'kar was one of the special relationships in the series, and his toast to him at the end tugs at the heart every bit as much as Vir's toast to Londo, which follows right on its heels.
Garibaldi: Can I see it? G'Kar: When it's done, but please don't read it while you're drinking coffee ... I don't want any pages to get stained. Garibaldi: C'mon G'Kar, this is me! G'Kar: Well .... okay ...
Wrong final line. The correct final line should be: G'Kar: I know. That's what I'm talking about. ... And then G'Kar allows Garibaldi to read it anyway, against G'Kar's better judgement.
Years watching this and I'm not sure if I never noticed or forgot but, G'Kar picks up his pen and goes to write with his right hand, the close-up, someone is writing with their left.
G'kar. I always wondered he would have seen if he had stayed in The Drazi sector of B5 for the Day of the Dead. However, I love the fact that he was still flawed enough to have refused to stay in that area, yet was humble enough to admit he was wrong about it.
G'Sten, perhaps. Or perhaps Tu'Pari or Du'Rog - someone with whom to wrestle the facts of his previous life, someone who doesn't see G'Kar as a saint. Ooh. You know who might have been a fascinating one for him to see? Turhan.
Very few actors can create a character, even fewer can do it through that level of prosthetic make up. Andreas Katsulas not only did it once with G'Kar but he also did it with Trek's Tomalok. He will be sadly missed.
G'kar: I've taken the opportunity provide by my incarceration to meditate, to think, sometimes I even sing. Michael: I know, we got a petition. G'kar: for or against Michael: based on the sound they think we're torturing you in here. G'kar: hahaha, sit down Mr Garibaldi.. Now if you don't laugh with G'kar on that one, you need your funny bone replaced or worse go to a psychologist and have your entire humanity re-evaluated... because if I'm being honest and hopeful... if I get justifiably incarcerated this is hopefully me... a criminal who's taken the time to become a better person by his incarceration. This is probably one of my favorite scene in all off in Babylon 5 (my other being G'kar and Catherine's ant scene) for just the friendship between G'kar and Michael and the depth of there conversation and how it makes you think and laugh.

My husband just convinced me to watch this show. It looks dated now but still the words are powerful. This show is so well written. G'Kar and Londo are my favorite characters. Such polar opposites yet profoundly effective. It's not just their words, but it's the delivery of each line that makes them outstanding. I am not sure that I would have loved G'Kar had he been portrayed by someone else. This man embodied this character so brilliantly and with such poise and presence that even years later he still gives chills. He is truly missed.

When J. Michael Straczynski wrote this he was really not just writing a bit of fiction, he was writing to inspire generations to come. His words, with Andreas' delivery struck right to the heart of everyone who has ever watched this show. That's good writing.

Back in the middle '80's Ron Pearlman played the role of Vincent in the TV Series "Beauty and The Beast"; he often read aloud or quoted poetry from poets such as Shelly, Keates, and of course Shakespear: "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments, for love does not alter when..." He made a tape/CD of these poetry readings and insisted on being in full costume/makeup for the recording session; his voice and music are remarkable. Much like Andreas he embodied the role/character he was portraying and was mezmorizing in doing so. I loved watching Babylon 5 when it was on TV and and could hardly wait to see the next show. Now here I am in my middle 70's am so glad to have found this group of like minded people who, while diverse in so many ways such as age, socio economics, cultural, philisophical and religious views; yet here we all are willing to talk about it, share their insights, and what they've learned from the writings of JMS a couple of decades later.
Judith Hendrixon I remember that series fondly. No matter how hard they tried, they could never quite duplicate the emotion in every production of that has since followed. Ron and Linda really brought their characters to life and it's unfortunate that the series ended so soon. Still, it was very moving role for both of them. Sounds like something I'll need to go find once again. Thanks for the inspiration.

And this I think is a portent. He becomes so revered he leaves the station without pomp and slips quietly into the shadows of space.
When JMS hired the set designers, he specifically looked for those who worked in theatre. One reason is that he wanted people who knew how to change a set easily, quickly and without too much money involved in the design. Looking back you can see the theatrical in this show, G'Kar leaning back into the shadow is a prime example of theatre working to enhance the scene, to best deliver the final words from a character so they can carry weight.

Truer words were never spoken. When I hear someone refer to Science Fiction as "stupid" or "for little kids", I think of this show and others, like Star Trek (Next Generation episode "Drumhead" anyone?) that demonstrate that while wisdom may come from some very strange places, it's origin in no way reduces the validity or profundity of said wisdom. I'm glad I never stopped loving and (more importantly) reading and watching Sci-Fi as I got older.

Vishnu79, very good insight to this and ST:TNG The Drumhead. Well written SciFi can have some of the most profound philosophical ideas and statements in it. And can stand the test of time in its meaning/intent. JMS made G'Kar the philosopher and poet of the series. It seems that character got all the best dialog in this area. And Andreas Katsulas did an amazing job bringing it to life. I'm re-watching B5 on Amazon now and am just amazed at how the storyline is so tight and flowing. The special effects now look dated, but the story and acting still stand well.
To be fair, the effects still don't look terrible, like some other shows.
And, G'kar, and Marcus were both philosophers, and I am proud to say both have influenced many of my thoughts and ideals.
G'Kar took a winding road to find the middle way. But he took many of us with him on the journey, and we're better for it.

Yes, pandemic. I was essential so no time to be by myself until I got sick. That whole month of December 2020 gave me much to think about. That virus was not a natural mutation. There was something in it that I felt besides hard flu like symptoms. It was not normal.
It is not the same. We have television and the internet. He had nothing forced into true silence without having to worry where the next meal was coming from, utilitues rent, no choices to make, no diversions or luxeries to induldge in. He had himself and his pen and paper. Ocassional visitors.
Being imprisoned is an intense experience that can bring alot of perspective to a situation.
G'Kar never stopped becoming a more interesting character in this series. There was always a new side to him opening up. In every episode, he is a Work in Progress.
On the surface, the show seems to be about the crew of the station. But once you take time to reflect, they are all supporting cast to set the stage for the Epic of G'Kar and Londo. The big important story is about those two.
LONDO never stopped becoming a more interesting character, but going in the other direction. Two characters like that, in the same series! How lucky were we, growing up?!
You just received a graduate seminar is great acting. Katsulas takes the words of a script and utterly transforms them into his own dialogue. He "becomes". We shall likely never see this ever again. For some reason, Katsulas reminds me of the great Leo McKern - another actor who assumed the whole of his character.

It is trivially easy to look over the dated visual effects when you have characters, performances, and writing of this caliber. What an epic tale, one that G'Kar is intimately woven into.
Bruh, this is my favorite sci fi series of all time…possibly the best written tv show of all time. It was far from trivial to get over the visuals and the 1st season which was basically the UN( I like this stuff though)
They payoff is sublime, but it’s next to impossible to get sci-fi fans to give this show a go

I never truly understood G'Kar's enlightenment, until i was in hospital. Alone and trapped, you cannot hide from yourself.
katsulas was such a spectacular actor. its rare to find an actor who can pull you so deeply into the characters they play. the man truly had talent and you can tell he really enjoyed his work. so sad he passed away.
He's probably the main reason to play Primal on PS2/PS4. The gameplay is pretty lightweight and the writing not actually that amazing. But as one of the two protagonists, he gives the whole thing great depth and meaning just with his voice.

The way G'kar's face is half obscured by darkness and half illuminated by light, it's like it's showing him between universes or transitioning to a higher plane of existance. The music that accompanies his writing the book of G'kar certainly hints at the massive change of what those writings will eventually bring to himself and his people.
I love this show, it's one of a handful that you can say "There may have been smaller rolls but there were no small performances"
And that was one of the show's great strengths - even the relatively minor characters were interesting and, in Season 5, proved they could even step into the shoes of major characters. Garibaldi left Babylon 5 to marry Lise Edgars and help her run her company while living on Mars, leaving Zack Allan to run security, and Zack proved up to the job as well as an interesting character (even though my shipping of Zack and Lyta came to nothing). Ivanova left to lead the Rangers, leaving the XO slot open for Babylon 5 for David Corwin to step into, and again he did it well and was an interesting character. G'Kar left Babylon 5 leaving Ta'lon to take over as the Narn ambassador, and Marshall Teague did a great job.
The fact that in its final season many of Babylon 5's roles were taken over by so-called secondary characters and it still held up so well is proof of the strength of its writing and acting.

@@nicholasdickens2801 It is difficult, even just laying in bed looking at the trees waving in the wind, my mind wanders conjuring a myriad of images and memories of sounds and music. Combined with tinnitus from operating farm equipment for decades without hearing protection(I was a foolish child and didn't understand the necessity until recently), it is virtually impossible for me to find silence.
I am guilty of this at times!

I remember an old fantasy novel called "Tea with a Black Dragon." One of the main characters was attracted to warmth and stillness. He compared the other main character as being still like a tree filled with birds. Silence is where you find it. Some people can only find that silence with some form of sound.
This show had a lot of great ideas and writing. I'm still effected by Delenn's views on we being the universe trying to figure itself out.
Andreas Katsulas was one hell of an actor. I loved everything he did. RIP.
such a magnificent and illuminating character arc. i can't think of a more well written one in anything i've witnessed. he went from a rather unlikable angry zealot to a philosopher soldier who's words paved the way for the future of the galaxy. would that we could all evolve so wonderfully.

It scenes like this that make an the idea of a Babylon 5 reboot so hard to swallow... I know there are some great actors out there, but the idea that anyone could owe and bring poetry to the role like Andreas did just same impossible at the very least... and sacrilege at the very most.
See I never wanted a reboot, when you had that group shot of the main characters "successors" at the end of the show, I was like, why not keep going with them? Ta'Lon, Vir, etc?
An 'expanded universe' would be nice. We know how the Dilgar War turns out but it'd be nice to see a series revolve around that anyway (that's a coupe of seasons right there). Crusade never went anywhere since it got cancelled, and the LOTR pilot was a shambles, but there's huge 'story space' left over eg what happens between Crusade and The Great Burn, and from there to when the last Human leaves Earth is almost completely unexplored.

+Krister Andersson What I like about the G'kar character is that we grow with him. he was vain, wilful and angry diplomat and grew into a sardonic, introspective and open minded philosopher, who campaigned for unity and peace. Andreas created a great character, since Nimoy's Spock.
G'kar is easily my favorite character in all of science fiction.

I am constantly reminded that I truly wish there was a Book of G'kar to read. He had much hard won wisdom, for the greatest wisdom comes from suffering, and G'kar suffered much.
G'Kar was such a well written, deeply philosophical character.
I love G'Kar, he was definitely a man of thinking, however, he has also been touched by Kosh. This is yet another example of the subtle prodding and nudgings from the Vorlons to the younger races. Who knows? The Vorlons MAY have even directly influenced the Book of G'Quan which later became the core of Narn philosophy!

all things considered, the influence of the Vorlans on the Narn during the previous Shadow War is undeniable
Although Kosh influenced G'Kar, it is important to note that he did not override G'Kar's will in any way. He simply gave G'Kar a moment of clarity where his anger would be less of an interference, and used that to plead with him to change his ways. And here is where we see a big difference between G'Kar and Londo.
Londo is warned many times about his path, but due to despair, laziness, and other reasons, he does not change. G'Kar is warned once, albeit more profoundly, about his ways. But he reflects on it and learns from it. In no way did either have their wills overriden, until the very end with Londo with the Drak. In the end, it was G'Kar's choice to take the message to heart.
Perhaps Kosh influencing G'kar was the same thing Lorien did with him uncounted years before.

You know, it's strange; over the last eight years, I've watched Babylon 5 through from beginning to end at least a couple three times. The way the political climate has gotten in the US, I've found watching B5 to be . . . oddly comforting. There are things about standing up and fighting for what is right against tyranny and against a regime that is corrupt and illegal that resonate very strongly with the Patriot in me.
It's what the United States was first founded on is why...the country is dying, but unfortunately, not enough people will band together to make things right because they have been taught to never think for themselves, that someone else will hand shit out to them if they just shut up and sit on their ass while others spoon-feed them.
The U.S. has become weak of heart and soft in the mind. It's a sad thing to admit, but while I still respect the core of the country this is supposed to be, I am sorely disgusted with what America has become by-and-large.

Babylon 5 is one of those shows that teaches us much about so many things. It should honestly be required watching(at least the plot essential episodes)

The genius of Andreas Katsulas is beyond my ability to describe. He was right......an artist is never appreciated in his own time. God I miss this man. I miss his work.
Andreas Katsulus was such a magnificent actor.....& this really helps to confirm it. Not merely what he says, but the way he slips back into the shadows as he finishes talking. Absolutely brilliant.
The body language there is entirely to his credit, but credit for the staging and lighting of it has to go to the crew behind the camera. That's one that might possibly have been in the script, but if not, credit goes to the director for the episode.
I used to intensely dislike series. GoT, Firefly, House, DS9, Big Bang, Parks n Rec, Friends, you name it. Tried them all, hated them all after a dozen episodes tops. Then one dear friend made me watch a bit of Babylon 5, and, well... I still intensely dislike series. But I have watched B5 several times over now, and I will again, in time. No other series I know about have such an awesome writing and acting all put together. None have an overarching story with definitive beginning, middle and end - which is, I think, the point. They are all incomplete stories that can end but never conclude.
Character design also speaks volumes. Look at any modern sci-fi flick; look at how CGI has progressed, you'd expect movies go further from rubber masks and funny haircuts they had to do with in B5 (and even then, there were Shadows and Vorlons, totally non-humanoid aliens), but no, there's even less effort put into that. Look, I'm an alien, I have green face with antennae! FFS, dude, a series older than you have done it better - without the technology you have today. Now tell me more about how it's too hard and expensive, yeah.
And the dialogues. "While all answers are replies, not all replies are answers". My. Just. My. It's russian classic literature level of writing. I have heard people drop one-liners and exerpts from Babylon 5, and most of them don't even know where it came from. The highest form of recognition for a writer is when someone goes around impressing girls with your verses not even knowing the source. I have never seen that phenomenon happen to series. To my knowledge, B5 is the only one to get to that anonymous cultural integration. Might be different on the USA side, but it's definitely true for Europe (and most likely, Asia as well).
Oh well; enough ranting.

This is one of the scenes that, for me, truly brings out the important role that the human species would play in the galaxy. Our ability to relate to each of the races, and to face down both the Vorlon and Shadows was crucial to the formation of the Alliance, and the ability of the younger races to progress. Garibaldi's friendship with G'kar was one of the special relationships in the series, and his toast to him at the end tugs at the heart every bit as much as Vir's toast to Londo, which follows right on its heels.
Babylon 5 is probably the best sci-fi series ever created. The story line and character development are first to none.

Years watching this and I'm not sure if I never noticed or forgot but, G'Kar picks up his pen and goes to write with his right hand, the close-up, someone is writing with their left.
This almost gives me ASMR. His voice, smooth but slightly scaly, with an earthy and wonderous undertone.

However, I love the fact that he was still flawed enough to have refused to stay in that area, yet was humble enough to admit he was wrong about it.
Maybe his father? Or, somehow, even Kosh as his father, as he did before?

Very few actors can create a character, even fewer can do it through that level of prosthetic make up. Andreas Katsulas not only did it once with G'Kar but he also did it with Trek's Tomalok. He will be sadly missed.
