@@ZeitdiebX I honestly think you are both selling Boxleitner and Jurassik short here. Their expressions are just as expertly acted as Katsulas. This scene is one of the absolute best in the series. Not only is G'Kar's speech riveting, gut-wrenching, and eloquent, but how Andreas Katsulas delivers it is magnificent. Then, he leaves the room with such dignity. I cry every time I watch it.
He was a massive talent but given the Holly wood star system he did not have the right name or look for them but he was brilliant for B5 so it was our gain and their loss.
@paraglide01 Even he can't do it forever as we have witnessed over the last few weeks/months. Every dictatorship or force that has ruled by using fear and violence in the history of this planet has fallen so far. Obviously there will always be new ones in which leaders think they can do it better and they may persist longer by avoiding mistakes other dictators made. Still they will fall sooner or later.
1:30 It's stuff like this that makes a great show. One of those moments of drama that not only defines people, but peoples and nations, performed in the space of seconds. Even a being as old as Kosh can't help but look. It's in the little moments too. At 2:25, Londo could have just talked over G'kar, but chooses not to. Londo's a patriot, but he knows what he and the Centauri are doing is wrong, and he still respects G'kar despite everything, so he lets him speak. It's incredible writing, from start to finish.

No, G'Kar and Londo- while surrogate brothers- are still two different species, nations- call it what you will. The East and West Ukrainians are supposed to be one nation- which they're not of course.
It is a testament to the power and art of Andreas Katsulas' acting that this scene and speech are as powerful as they are when he's wearing several inches of latex and makeup. A true talent, he is missed.
We- the West and the East Ukraine- never had anything in common. A lot of my Reb and Reb sympathizers friends became Loyalists after 2022 but it doesn't mean they have any use for BlackRock, Nudelman, Zelensky and his Gestapo/SBU.

Such incredibly good writing and acting for an under-appreciated show. The best thing about it is that you see the characters undergo real growth across the years. G'Kar was an antagonist at first, then grew into one of the most likeable and sympathetic charactersof the series. Likewise Londo was a buffoon at first, then became a vile prick, but redeemed himself in the end when he turned on the Shadows. Terrific drama, not just for science fiction, but television in general.
I remember watching this scene as a jerk. And Andreas steals it. But look at Peter closely. He is doing something so subtle in this scene. The guilt on his face in that final section is so perfect for Londo's irrational behaviour
This is one of the best scenes in B5, Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurasik are just brilliant as G'Kar and Londo. Utterly brilliant, time for my yearly B5 week....
School children are given Shakespeare to learn. I would like to think that in another couple of hundred years (if our species survives that long) that children are given this to learn instead.
In another time and in another Universe the book of G'kar is essential reading, stories will be told and songs will be sung about a person who sacrificed himself for his people and the name of G'kar is spoken with reverence
In 'deconstruction of falling stars' we see that this has happened. The characters of B5 are revealed to be semi-legendary icons similar to King Arthur and his Knights.
That's precisely what I was talking about. Even as far back as 1945 the Ukrainian and the Russian anti Bolsheviks were treated differently. Vlasov vs. Bandera. We were never against the Bolsheviks. We were always against Russia.
Still sends a warm feeling into me every time I see it. G'kar really strikes a tone for us in real life. That is one of the reasons Science Fiction can be so good when the story and director are superb.
Dies that include those that wanted their freedom to not join Nato respected as well? Funny how the US has been trying g to get this proxy war for decades.
This is epic scene from start to finish I loved everything, from Londo speech of what will be w/The narns and J'kar to Sheridan telling him NO J'kar is here to stay even Delenn helped here ,to Londo shouting now to J'akar standing up and giving the speech of his life and everyone is just standing there in a wow moment I think the actors were in amazement too.. This is Emmy scene
This reminds me of some resent happenings at Earth. May the people of Russia, China and North Korea soon feel what is freedom and prosperity! And may the useless war come to an end. Slava Ukraini!
With the attack on Ukraine, this speech rings truth in my heart and mind. Long live the Ukrainian people. One day soon, this tyrant Putin will be held accountable and on that day, the world will be a better place.
GamePlayShare Yea, but in the end he became a noble person, which is another reason why I like B5 since it shows a character's development and how they evolve into a better person
@@Lightingwarrior haha, I did say a main reason rather than the main reason :) That being said, I would view them as joint, with Sheridan and the storylines of the Shadow & Earth wars. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with the Sheridan and Delenn relationship but personally, I would not consider that a highlight of the show. Albeit brief, I'd probably say the Sheridan/Kosh scenes were more enjoyable than the Sheridan/Delenn scenes for me. In terms of secondary, the characters of Bester and Morden!
Magnificent writing Magnificent acting! London's "NOW!" is so striking, the single moment we know for sure Londo is lost...and then the dignity and power of G'kar's response...!
Volodya is protecting my brother and Efdward Snowden and their families. Screw BlackRock and the Blake Association- to me he's Sheridan. And I'm his Buffy- the Banderite Slayer.
When Delin spoke. Londo KNEW he had lost. He at that moment thought back to his warning earth away from the membari. Yet his pride, Ego, and Stubbornness at being so close to getting his way demanded that he couldn't stop.
Something of interest in the council scene- Kosh's presence. He really doesn't need to be at this (what any other Vorlon would consider) petty argument and waste his time, yet he is. And not only is he there, he seems to feel for G'kar- he actually turns to look at G'kar after Londo demands his removal, then follows him out with his head.
I heard a rumor a while ago that they wanted to reboot B5. But how could you come close to this level of acting and emotion. You may be able to outdo the graphics and sets etc but the people playing those iconic roles can never be replicated.
I think every dictator and psychopathic control freak needs to hear this speech. I get teary eyed every time I watch it. And this is coming from a fictional character. I can't remember any historical figure who said anything remotely near this eloquent and inspiring.
+UnplugTheMatrix "Men since the beginning of time have sought peace. Various methods through the ages have attempted to devise an international process to prevent or settle disputes between nations. From the very start workable methods were found insofar as individual citizens were concerned, but the mechanics of an instrumentality of larger international scope have never been successful. Military alliances, balances of power, leagues of nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war. _We have had our last chance._ If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advances in science, art, literature and all material and cultural developments of the past two thousand years. In the muslim world, most dictators have been overthrown and democracy reigns, yet people in those countries live in fear. +UnplugTheMatrix Freedom is kind of relative. What is free to one person is not the same to another. And history has shown that people who are free has a tendency to progressively choose slavery and vice versa.
Simon L that's because people don't really want universal freedom, they want freedom for themselves and rules to govern the actions of others to make the world more predictable and less scary for them.
khatack in other words, everyone wants to be a dictator and force others to do their bidding. I get it. All this fighting between political parties is really to force the opposing side to be the slave
When I got to this part in the series, I totally wanted to go buy a ship and start supplying weapons to the Narn and shuttling people off the world and ambushing Centauri patrol craft and just be the Jim Raynor to his Tassadar SO bad. Also, would have loved to have seen King Arthur make a return during the Centauri occupation. Would've been cool to have him show up randomly leading a band of freedom fighters.
That would have been great. I loved the episode with Michael York. To paraphrase G'Kar, "No ancient enemies or prophecies! They were the bad guys, and we were the good guys!"
They just don't make SciFi shows like this anymore! The character development over special effects made it! The G'Kar/Malory relationship development was outstanding! From mortal enemies to reluctant friends. One of my favorite scenes was G'Kar saying "My people can never forgive your people, but I can forgive you."
This was one of the greatest space operas ever made stuff set up season one pays off in season six people talk like adults that are professionals in their fields. This is what right looks like Kurtman trek is dog shit on the sidewalk of sci fi
"NOW!!" Superb moment. After hearing Sheridan all but gloating about the fact that G'Kar would stay free and that he didn't sign the surrender agreement, it was nice to see Londo shut the man up.
+Ares99999 Seeing Sheridan go from shocked to pissed off in about two seconds was amazing, I loved it when Londo shouted "NOW!". One of my favorite scenes.
MonstrousEntity Well, Sheridan was generally a self-righteous asshole. So was Londo, true, but at least Londo eventually dropped much of his self-righteousness. Sheridan never did.
I'm going to be real. I'm going to tell the hard truth as best I believe and know it. This show at times was corny. It had cringeworthy moments and it had sometimes rather overdramatic performances that made me wince. And it was at times an AMAZING show that could stir emotions, feelings, thoughts and viewpoints. It had some of the most POWERFUL moments and it had dialogue that could be so MOVING and RELEVANT with EXCELLENT performances that outdo almost anything else. This scene was excellent. The actor portraying G'Kar (God rest his soul in Heaven) was truly AMAZING. As a man of Irish ethnicity with some family in Ireland, I can understand G'kar and his speech concerning the English and it's history. But I also remember G'kar can forgive. This was amazing. I am grateful for the memories. I am grateful it erred on the side of POWERFUL performances rather than underwhelming ones. I am grateful, for the show Babylon 5.
I can't imagine it was easy for someone as proud as G'Kar to ask for help from anyone. His character had really started to grow by this point in season 2. You can see the huge respect Sheridan has for G'Kar in the last minute and twenty seconds of this scene. Huge credit to both actors for their brilliant performances.
The same with Garibaldi when he went to talk with him about arms buying. He offered him help as well in the way he could ship arms to Narn and stay away from B5. 'Why? Because you didn't lie to me.'
@@stonem0013 That is incorrect. Gkar's government told him, in their last message, to ask for sanctuary from Sheridan - and they KNEW it would be hard for him to ask, but it was required of him for all of Narn.
I would consider that one of the greatest scenes ever to grace the televisions of the world. Though Andreas Katsulas may be gone, his words will live on .
i love Adnreas Katsulas' protrayal of G'kar and believe it's one of the best characters and actor portrayals in TV history, however what not seen is the love for Peter Jurasik's portrayals of Londo. the part where he cuts Sheridan off with that "NOW" was perfect. timing, inflection and emotion, it gives me goose bumps every time i see it.....
A lot of attention on the speech, but I love the interaction between Sheridan and G'Kar that you graciously included even more. Londo's betrayal shook G'Kar to the core. He had judged Londo to be a person worthy of trust, despite his people being the sworn enemy of his own, and look what happened. He was proven wrong. There's a big part of him that cautions him against trusting anyone ever again based on his own judgment of people - specifically, non-Narns. Trust is a lie, hope is a lie, cooperation is a lie. In shaking hands with Sheridan, he makes a conscious decision to choose otherwise - he chooses to believe, despite the evidence, that his ability to discern whether a person is trustworthy or not is not at fault with Sheridan. He could just as easily not have shaken that hand; what he said would have served as an explanation that Sheridan would have accepted. "Fair enough, anyone would have trust issues after something like that." It could have been a much slower process. But it didn't take G'Kar even twenty-four hours to pick himself off the mat. What a guy. Much later it turns out he was right about Londo, too. Londo *was* sympathetic, but he felt he had no other choice but to do his duty - whether out of loyalty or out of self-preservation. Something G'Kar understands, since asking for sanctuary was also something he did purely to fulfill his duty to the Narn people. Eventually all the pieces fall into place for G'Kar as to what person Londo is at his core, which is why he was ultimately able to forgive him.
And NO ONE belived Ukraine would be able to hold out, let alone WIN this war as they do at this moment. Sad that this wannabe Mercenary could have ENDED it completly right then and there at saturday... he chose not do because of some stupid reason of "i wont attack fellow russians"... their humans, also they are SLAUGHTERING other humans. This scene is one of the absolute best in the series. Not only is G'Kar's speech riveting, gut-wrenching, and eloquent, but how Andreas Katsulas delivers it is magnificent. Then, he leaves the room with such dignity. I cry every time I watch it.
Beneath all that makeup, Andreas Katsulas has more emotion than any Oscar winner.
Yes
THROUGH all that makeup, Andreas Katsulas had more emotion than any Oscar winner.
He was a massive talent but given the Holly wood star system he did not have the right name or look for them but he was brilliant for B5 so it was our gain and their loss.
B5 had some of the absolute best and absolute worst acting.
@@kanyefuck7018 There were some truly horrible performances in that show, but the main cast was rock solid.
R.I.P Andreas Katsulas AKA "G'KAR" Never Forgotten.

Its very similar to the quote from Victor Hugo ,no army can stop an idea who's time has come.

Gone, exploring beyond the rim.
Londo goes through a rollercoaster of emotions and growth as the series progresses.
Words which never grew old, but sounds like spoken right now. May G'Kar be right this time too.
"“No dictator, no invader, can hold an imprisoned population by the force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power
governments, and tyrants, and armies can not stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.”"
These words of G'Kar are now more true than ever.
OMG the match to the current Ukraine war is so horribly striking…
No. What's happening in Ukraine is a civil war. At least it started as a civil war.
No, G'Kar and Londo- while surrogate brothers- are still two different species, nations- call it what you will. The East and West Ukrainians are supposed to be one nation- which they're not of course.
Putin should watch this but then skip to Endgame. Hopefully his fate

It is a testament to the power and art of Andreas Katsulas' acting that this scene and speech are as powerful as they are when he's wearing several inches of latex and makeup. A true talent, he is missed.
Russian Londo vs Ukrainian G'Kar
No. Londo is the Nazi Ukraine, G'Kar is Donbass.

Londo was also beautiful
at turn angry, sad, at awe to G'kar and then back to fear. just by the expressions.
Londo's "NOW!" makes my skin go goosbumps even after all this years. Incredible. Fascinating. Breathtaking.

Both. Both would be good.
In 'deconstruction of falling stars' we see that this has happened.

Babylon 5 was great.
He didn't ask - Sheridan offered
The same with Garibaldi when he went to talk with him about arms buying. He offered him help as well in the way he could ship arms to Narn and stay away from B5. 'Why? Because you didn't lie to me.'
@@stonem0013 That is incorrect. Gkar's government told him, in their last message, to ask for sanctuary from Sheridan - and they KNEW it would be hard for him to ask, but it was required of him for all of Narn.

I would consider that one of the greatest scenes ever to grace the televisions of the world. Though Andreas Katsulas may be gone, his words will live on .
I feel John Sheridan inhaling and being ready to fight in this moment. Then G'kar speaks words that are universal to all people.
i love Adnreas Katsulas' protrayal of G'kar and believe it's one of the best characters and actor portrayals in TV history, however what not seen is the love for Peter Jurasik's portrayals of Londo. the part where he cuts Sheridan off with that "NOW" was perfect. timing, inflection and emotion, it gives me goose bumps every time i see it.....
Londo should not have been forgiven, there are crimes that are unforgivable, submitting a people to slavery is one of them.
