      Skylar Lesmeister, Can you tell me how to fish in Northern Missouri? My parents have a house at Mark Twain Lake which is huge and is renowned for its crappie fishing. Going up tomorrow, may give it my 100th try! Maybe I never had anyone show me properly because I know the fish are in there!

    • @skylarlesmeister1081
      @skylarlesmeister1081 6 лет назад +11

      jps121 i cant give you specific tips for your area, and i just looked that lake up and you are correct in the fact that it is huge hahah. Crappie are a bit more finnicky than bluegill, redbreast, pumpkinseed, etc. And theyre usually a lot deeper. My best advice would be to ask people who fish a lot in the area. You can definitely get em with a worm and a bobber, a minnow, a tiny spoon or topwater bait. I personally like fly fishing for em. Usually near docks and by brush close to shore is a good start

    We have lost a huge salmon exactly the same way. My son was ten years old and had a meltdown. Right after that, we bought the biggest net in the store. Great video and thank you for showing how you have lost that fish. Good for younger people to see how to handle disappointment. As far as eating the fish, if you would count the toxins, hormones, preservatives, food colorings, and other man-made chemicals in the meat that you buy in the grocery store you would be surprised. I think that fish was safer to eat than commercial meat, but the only way to know is to test it in a lab. Great video. Stay awesome!

    Holding bigger fish by just the gill plate isn't the best either, they are not designed to support their body weight by their gill plate, but if you don't touch the actual gills that's ok. Support the fishes body weight when lifting them under their stomach.

  • @rkayser89

    When you net them- once they're halfway over the rim, lower the rod tip so their head* can go down in the net- they'll slide right on down the center. You kept the rod tip up on both fish you tried netting, and the second one worked out. The first one- the hooks caught on the near side of the net because you didn't give him his head.
    Remember- you aren't pulling the net up around the entire fish- you're kinda trying to drop them down the center of the net.
    And don't forget to pull the cheeks off your halibut! Probably the best part of the fish.

      I love catching fish, but I love them getting away sometimes too. It reminds me that it is a still a contest, and since I do not practice catch and release fishing unless the fish is outside of regulations, it is almost always a life and death struggle. I do not think it is melodramatic to admire an opponent who fought bravely, even when they win.

    • @sparkyjones560
      @sparkyjones560 6 лет назад +1

      @@jayn8392 they use tube boats because they do the job and are cost effective and it doesn't hurt their budgets to throw them away and replace them regularly. Plus they are flat bottoms where v-hulls would have a deeper draft.
      Are they meant for 3-4 ft seas+? No not really they are gonna get slammed around pretty badly. For a shallow water landing craft, or a light duty rescue boat it does its job and it cheap to comparable sized all fiberglass boats. They definitely aren't as durable as a fiberglass hull, but it's not like a pool float either. They have their uses but I'd put it in the kayak category, you'd want as decent conditions as possible to go out in it.

    I suggest getting some plastic fish grips instead of grabbing fish by the gills when handling the fish, they're only like 10 bucks and makes controlling the fish easy especially if you plan on releasing it. Thanks! :D

    Ive been watching tons of your videos, and i really enjoy them. That being said, i do have a tip for you, if you read comments. That halibut you lost, you called it a rookie mistake, but then when you caught the next one, you did the same thing. When you are netting fish, always net them from the tail side and towards their head. If you try from the headside, as soon as the fish realizes its getting encased, it will start flapping around. The hook will then get snagged on the net, and just rip out of the fishes mouth, since there is no give in the net. and it will simply slide out of your net, especialy if your net is on the smaller side. Keep on doing what you are doing, it looks like you are having a great time, and your videos are great. Hope this tip will help you, greetings from Norway.

    I'm gearing up and studying up for first halibut quest tomorrow, early a.m. First light. Kayak. I appreciate you showing the one that got away. That was just a bad ass fish. From the videos I've seen over the last couple of years, halibut seem the toughest to net. Takes balls to show everyone you lost one... but it taught us a lot. Giving myself one week to chase Moby Dick! Just learned how to tie a sliding live bait rig from Die Hard. Will try with some frozen squid, and probably swim baits in the sands around Monterey Bay. Now, what I really want are some live sardines or 'chovies so will run a sabiki rig, too, for the first time. Thanks FL... you and DHF are awesome. (I learned how to catch stripers from the surf this year from you guys... 19 and counting since late February. Again, thanks! Will report back!)
