The 90s AMG C-classes (W202 shape) - C36 AMG was a 3.6 litre straight-six (276 bhp). Later C43 was a 4.3 V8 (302 bhp) and there was a rare C55, which was a factory converted C43 with a full-fat 5.4 V8 (340 bhp). All of these were naturally aspirated.
Then the next-gen C-class (W203) might be what Rich is referring to - the C32 AMG was a supercharged 3.2 V6 with more horsepower than even the old C55 (354 bhp was quite a bit for a small saloon at the time, I think), but hampered by a five-speed slush box. Later, the big old 5.4 nat-asp V8 went back into the C-class with a bit more power (367 bhp), though those late C55s are quite rare and still probably not as much fun as either a contemporary M3 or an RS4. And they're a late 90s/2000s Merc, so there's a decent chance of everything going flamboyantly and expensively wrong.
The last scene of Ashes to Ashes had Gene Hunt in his office flicking through a Merc 190 brochure so he obviously had his eye on the Cosworth
