When aluminum is in contact with steel, the aluminum will corrode badly. There was sealant around the steel subframe to aluminum frame juncture, but you removed it. It is important to reseal those crevices in order to keep the water out.
Came to make the same comment, I was raised to support your local business as much as possible to help your local community. Love to see and hear it elsewhere! ( and love your projects as well)
When you’re hauling hay the restrictions are don’t hit the power lines or overpasses. It falls under the “loose fader” rules. So here in Ontario we keep it under 15’ or so and aim for 10’ wide or less if you can.
Sounds like down in Kansas. Hauling round bales on a flat deck, you get to right at what you're talking about. 14.5 high, 10 wide. Which, they give us that by law hauling hay.
Out here in ny! These guys got huge old box trucks with the sides cut off and form the hay just like a box huge heavy loads 100% overloaded flying down the roads at early hours in the am when roads are dark! Makes me glad im not the one driving or working for that boss! Only one guy who got his act together has all the enclosed trailers that he must drop off at people famrs and pick them up in the winter!
Minimum wage, %50 of welders are on parole and get paid Minimum wage. Well when I took some automotive classes at the local community College which was next to the welder classes. Half the welders were on parole
Not sure if you checked it or not, but get up under the trailer and take a good look inside the king pin plate for rot holes. That's one of the number one reasons those aluminum flatbeds get junked.
I get everyone bemoans spool gun. When it's set up correctly in the hands of a skilled operator it's a strong and economical way of fabrication. However, as most of us know: That is not always the case. The cost of TIGing a trailer like that would be pretty astronomical.
Brushing black Tremclad is by far the best quick and dirty uncoating. Best part is when its looking a little rusty again hit it with a wire brush quick or just brush more on lol
Canadian Tire's house brand "Armor Coat" rust paint is also excellent. It's made by Rustoleum (the same company as Tremclad), but is cheaper despite being just as good or better.

When I saw the suspension parts of the rear axle I though "Oh it looks in decent shape, wait no, that's Ontario decent. Its shit." Then I saw the plate and realized why it looked so familiar. We're truly blessed by the rust gods.
That's a small load 😅🤏 4 in height 3 in width and the last 12 langs halfway ower the edge 😂 49 tons last trip of the day 😂 that was exciting getting home to the farm 😅 😂😅
Hey Rich if your trailer is setup for it, you should swap sides for your tie downs. If you ever have to tighten your load on the side of the road your not in traffic doing it. Just a little safety tip for ya! Happy Truckin Buddy!
don't shoot wd40 in an airline you will wreck all your o-ring seals or at least anything that is a standard buna n seal. take an o-ring from your kit soak it in wd-40 see result.
Those big coach steer tires look good on the trailer. They might even be a little taller than your drive tires. My VNL was built with those big bolognies on the steer axle and 275 tires on the drive. Looked like it skipped leg day!
Hi from uk Rich👋👍 got job getting the trailer to safe good clean standard and on the road again 👌 Vince did a fab job on the welding 👍 and love the drive by's too them prison gate light stacks look awesome with the exhaust stacks in motion shots 👌 congrats again yo uou getting qualified as a operator 👍 keep up the amazing content you do, thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍👋
Cleaning out rust of a circular hole is easier done with a suitable piece of round stock or pipe (that will fit your drill) , cut a slot in it, put a strip of sandpaper in it and lay loose ! Using a drill or you'll be turning it by hand for days 🤣
Good truckin driver 👌 Just some pointers, straps gotta go inside the rub rail. Also if you like having all of your teeth please please please invest in an actual strap binder bar. Theyre made specifically so they're less likely to slip out while you're cranking on em. Other than that love the vids brother!
Awesome to see - grandpa drove for PIE for 40 years. Be safe with those strapped/chained loads...Close family friend was ended when a broken chain let irrigation pipes go.
Stupid question, would it have worked better to sand or dry ice blast the trailer? Would have gotten rid of the oxidation and crap and got to a consistent sheen across the trailer. Imagine most of it was a $$ driven choice.
Rich, you and Phil are hilarious. Glad you got the trailer up and running!! Great addition to your "Fleet". Another wonderful video from UP NORTH! Hahahaha. (Since I'm on the Gulf of Mexico)
I'm used to seeing trucks hauling about 25-50% more hay per load on deck-over trailers. More one low-boy trailers. The number of bales depends on the type of hay (alfalfa, coastal, cane, straw, etc.), and how wet/recently it was cut it is. Just saying.
In Australia.........we tried Aluminum trailers...........they are junk. Only steel chassis can handle our roads and heavy weights, Aluminum floors are ok. Ive seen the North American dolly converters used on 'turnpike semi doubles"..........frail,pathetic pieces of trash, how do they let those things on public roads?? For the love of god.......who would use oil hubs? Grease all the way, oil hubs just have leaking wheel seals on them every second week on trailers. As for those 'glad hand' air couplings..............utter garbage. On rough roads they work loose and come undone, or the rubber sealing pads are always needing replacement.
Tidy truck , is it low under powered , as that load didn't look very heavy , plus the trailer was not fully loaded , 3 high would have made a decent load , you have some weird weight limits , but in the UK/Europe your rig would be a 40 tonne/40,000 kgs , doubt your load made 10 tonne ? As you live in the salt belt ? are you going to lacure/paint the trailer ? wonder what your rig weighs empty looks around 14-16 tonne ? Also as previous comment seal any steel to alloy to keep water/moisture out and keep corrosion to as much of a minimum as possible .
You're a trucker now! When you on a job and you're not loading stuff yourself, you need to sit the cab, listen to country music, drink coffee and smoke cigarettes or cigars! Be sure you rest your arm on the window sill. That's what my dad always did. 😂😂😂
Why and who thought an aluminium trailer with steel axle brakets was a good idea. Dissimilar metals. Not grin the salt belt. Mite be light. But it ain’t strong. Carry a third of the weight a proper trailer could. But I’m not paying for it. And I won’t ever be following this unsafe abortion of a trailer. Good luck Rich.
Should look into abrasive or nonabrasive Cup Brush, Nylon Filaments like Al's Liner Abrasive 180 Grit Nylon Bristle Cup Brush - 6 Inch - Safe for Use on Metal, Wood, Aluminum and Plastic Surfaces (TOOR6) or Nonabrasive 6" Cup Brush, Nylon Filament, 5/8"-11 Thread
I really don't understand this fashion in Canada and the States for having 10' or 15 feet of frame between the cab and the fifth wheel? Just makes the rig unnecessarily long and difficult to maneuver?
I own a Peterbilt 379, I normally pull a end dump with, but there has been a time or two, if i had a flatbed, could have picked up a nice paying job or two, wish I could find a free flatbed like that that didn’t take to much to make road worthy!
All trailers had problems but I did not like the aluminum trailers . Compass that turned into Falcon had one back in the 80s . It got used for the wrong load / loaded the wrong way . Say that . It came in dragging bellie . It was never the same and it was a new loner . I do miss working on the old rigs . You do a great job .

Love the trailer. Love the truck even more so. But my god that hay you are hauling (pardon my french) is soft as HELL. Whoever is baling that hay needs to put a shit load more compression in his/her baler.
Just a heads up for all you guys acid wash at blue beacon is not worth it lol very diluted, I worked at another truck wash and our acid worked so much better
I don't know about the rest of your fan base, but I'm absolutely loving the transport truck vids. Keep up the good work Rich!
That truck is sexy sounding and is easy on the eyes!
100% These videos are super interesting

C'mon Rich, three high and three on the back or you're wasting diesel. Nice trailer, love that truck.

If it flys, floats or fucks it's cheaper to rent than to own.
In this case he made out as that trailer new is about 100 G's and all he got into it is less than 10 G's
Love seeing a bit of Kevin’s operation. I help out a friend doing small square bales and there’s nothing like the smell of a fresh cut hay field.
Nuthin quite like filling your lungs with dust
I love the smell of alfalfa. Unfortunately I'm extremely allergic to it.
I love how you make financially realistic videos, showing people craftsmanship can be valued over well, value
Well said. Couldn’t agree more. You and Derek from ViceGripGarage both are great examples for all us gearheads
I dont think i would've spent $700 cleaning the trailer
Need to put the sealant back around the suspension. The sealant keeps salt and crude from getting between the steel and aluminum.

Grinding, polishing, buffing aluminum without a mask is a REALLLLY bad idea. The dust it creates is extremely bad.
