Sam misses his father, a virtual world designer, and enters a virtual space that has become much more dangerous than his father intended. Now, both father and son embark upon a life-and-death journey.
For 2010 the CGI in this was absolutely mind-blowing, and combined with the Daft Punk soundtrack it made it an awesome audiovisual experience.
Except de aging
@@Ghostmaker01no for 2010 that was really good, hasn’t been done a lot back then
@@Ghostmaker01the deaging was supposed to show he was the clone since he didnt age like the original
was not, looks like linkin park music vid meets final fantasy cutscene. not great
@@zakarysantana2635 and it is okay... for CLU... but they added that shot where Flynn turns back to Sam in the doorway and that doesn't work out, imho;
but I just recently learned that the issue is... well I always thought they didn't use enough reference material and just smoothened out 2010's Jeff Bridges;
the scene is set in 1989 and the movie that comes to mind for refererence is The Fabulous Baker Boys... I just recently learned that the wy he looks here might be inspired by See You In The Morning; in that morning he is not only clean shaven like CLU is supposed to be but the makeup department also amde sure that you cannot see any pores at all on neither Krige's or Brige's faces;
It kinda make sense to use this 80s/90s perfect Hollywood look for CLU and it would make sense to portray Flynn the same in the flashback where he creates him, after all that takes place sometime inbetween 1982 and 1989; but it would have been nice if they added up to 7 years and a stubble back to his face for the scene with young Sam
This movie was way ahead of its time!
Just like speed racer
I couldn’t agree more. It was, and still is one of my favorite films. The visual design and the soundtrack are gold.
That was the same story with the original when it came out in the early 80's
@@thorfinnmckenzieI was born more than a decade after the original. Grew up watching Legacy. But it is just touching up on the OG.
80s is still futuristic af in a somewhat more believable way.
one hundred fuckin percent bro!
Tron Legacy is a sequel to the original Tron.
It's not a remake.
He didn't say it was a remake
Not sure where he said it was a remake? At the beginning, literally 10 seconds in he says i haven't seen the first one.
Confusion.
@@ironshrek474 He doesn't say it directly, but it is clear he has no CLU about Tron
@@aaronsandman749 He said, on multiple occasions, something along the lines of "Is this the same story as the original?" implying that he at least doesn't know whether or not it is a remake
@@HCN42nice pun😂
Dude. Went to see this in theaters when 3D was all the rage. It was normal 2D until Sam went into the grid then it went full on 3D. It took a while to pick my jaw up off the floor.
I remember that. It was jawdropping for me although I was only 11 yo at that time
Made me dizzy, had to watch glasses off, still fun in IMAX!
Oh yes, it was spectacular! The light trail and lines were so visceral and wanted to grab it
I'm really hoping they release this in theaters again right before Tron 3 drops. I'd die to watch this in Imax 3d
Didn’t think you’d watch this! One of the favorite childhood films, even if people don’t like it.
Same! I thought it was pretty neat even as a kid.
This is definitely one of those movies where the cg still holds up to today sadly Disney’s cg rn is shit
@@synthwaveguy_2942 everything but the deepfake to make his dad look younger lol i loved this film and it held up quite a bit when i rewatched it in 2023 but there were only a few scenes that i thought looked bad but thats most movies now adays so you really cant complain lol
Ikr Disney doesn't deserve Tron. So much potential and they scrapped it just to get their dirty hands on Star Wars.
And ofc they'd rather jump off a building instead giving up an ip.
@@MyNameIsVok yeah really just the de aging cgi looks bad, but this film is like pacific rim. The CGI still holds up and looks absolutely incredible. Also Daft Punk
TRON ended up having a bigger impact on me than I thought: Liked this movie, loved TRON: UPRISING, and loved those Disney Unity games of them. The soundtracks for this movie and the show were great, too
@tristancampbell4941 Me too.. still miss watching it for the first time when it first came out.. I get all nostalgic
Uprising was way too good than it should have been. I wish they kept going with the series.
Ok, it’s not just me lol… this movie is honestly a big part of my childhood
I'm still pissed Uprising was cancelled on a damn cliffhanger. Stupid Disney had no idea who their audience was for the show - adults - and kept pushing it towards kids. The continued schedule shifts made it hard for fans to find new episodes.
@@DonnaCPunk And it was so crazy because _I_ was a kid and I loved the darkness and pacing of it in comparison to a Kick Buttowski or a Phineas and Ferb. Other than Motor City, that had my favorite artstyle as well, kind of like what that Urbance pilot wanted to be
This has to be one of my favourite soundtracks. I listen to it regularly.
Same! Absolutely amazing work by daft punk
22:49 R.I.P. Daft Punk. Thank you for giving us one of the best movie soundtracks in this Tron sequel. I'm so glad you've watched this movie, Seb. Tron Legacy is one of my favorite sci-fi films.
I still listen to the Film soundtrack as its own Daft Punk album. Just sooo good. As well as the “Reconfigured” soundtrack…that one has some bangers
i really hope they come back for the next one.
Wait, he died!?
@@deontaebates6656 false, they both just retired. that's all.
The whole vibe of cyber synth aesthetics and Daft freaking Punk rolling the score and cameo as well, no other film even came close to it when it came out -and still to this day nothing has really taken as much of a dig into this atmosphere.
The story itself may be a little rough around the edges hence why it didn't score highest critics, but the feel of the movie is true icon status.
This is one of my favorite movies. Some fun facts:
When Sam is sneaking into Encom he says “now that is a big door.” In the original tron, Kevin sneaks into encom as well and says the same thing at the same door.
Every suit the characters wear is 100% practical. All the lights actually functioned, but requires the actors to wear battery packs that ran down very quickly
In the disc wars scene, the crowd chanting is actually the crowd from the San Diego Comic Con the year this movie was revealed. They recorded the crowd chanting “disc wars” and “rinzler.” There’s a video on RUclips of it
When Quora is talking about playing Go, she says that she uses an aggressive strategy, which is a joke about real world computers being easy to beat at the game because of how they play (apparently it’s tough to program an ai opponent for it? Idk)
The “end of line” club is a reference to the original movie, and coding in general. The main antagonist talks to the “master control program” throughout it and it always ends every conversation with “end of line.” In coding you finish a command with an end of line indicator, usually a closed bracket or parenthesis (I think it varies between languages sometimes) to let the computer know that the command is done and to move on to the next
Everyone should also give big credit to John Reardon and Anis Cheurfa, who were the body doubles for Clu and Tron. They don’t get nearly enough recognition for the work they did
There’s a cartoon called “Tron: Uprising” that is really good. It’s set in the time while Flynn is locked in the grid, and it has Elijah Wood in it. Sadly there’s only one season that ends on a major cliffhanger
Why exactly did people hate about Tron Legacy? I think its definitely a gem and loved the aesthetics. I just thibk some people have bad taste.
Fanboys always hate anything that's different. This creates the weird situation that they want more (i.e. another game/movie) -- and when they get more, they complain about everything that's different from before. As far as I'm concerned, they can just watch the old movie, which has absolutely no changes compared to the old movie.
And boy, there's a lot of difference. They even had to change the main characters -- given the time span between then and now, you just can't make a movie that picks up 5 minutes after the end of the first one.
Yes, Tron was an actual game, and I was REALLY good at playing it. One time a young friend of mine got the arcade game and when I saw it, I was like "Oh my God you guys have the Tron game?" And they were like "Yeah, do you know how to play it?" And I said "Sure" so then I started playing and they were standing there with their mouths hanging open. I killed it.
You don't need to watch the original to understand the sequel, but it does add lore and context. The og and the sequel were both way ahead of time at release in terms of tech and visuals. Tron was a huge inspiration to pretty much any and everything CGI releated that followed
As someone who was totally familiar with the 1982 movie TRON - this was an absolutely fantastic sequel. I've no idea why anyone could think this was bad. It's hugely entertaining, visually spectacular even to this day, and the soundtrack is legendary. What do people want?
Anyway, seems like you had fun, you might have understood the story a little more had you seen the original TRON from 1982.
Can’t believe you didn’t watch the original!!!! 80% of your questions would have been explained bro.
For 80’s kids the first was insane!! And I played the tron video game at the arcade all the time.
@@robertfalcon6083 I had it for the C64. Played it daily.
This was my first question when I saw Seb watched this one; too sad he did not watch TRON;
fun fact daft punk composed this whole film and won awards for it, truly an incredible soundtrack
they didnt win any awards
@@isac4043 could’ve sworn they did ? Maybe it was something else they won one for
Well they bloody should have...
This is probably the most aesthetically pleasing film ever! An unappreciated film that has aged well over time to the point where you can say it was “ahead of its time”.
I did the math. Based on the assumption that one Grid hour equals 1 real minute, dad Flynn was trapped in the Grid for about 1200 years
Correct
Which kinda makes sense, even digitized, human memory would have its limits, as a regular old human brain has an upper limit of about 500 years before you start to forget major core memories. Flynn's memories being a hazy light & shadow, even for his treasured memories of his family, fits with that idea.
This soundtrack just transports you to another world. It’s the perfect fusion of techno-futuristic and orchestral. Just absolutely beautiful in every way imaginable. Still get chills everytime I hear it. And emotional with the track Father & Son. Overall it’s just amazing. Also helps that this is one of my favourite sci-fi movies.
This movie came out on a December. I remember right before Christmas break a girl from school gifted me The complete soundtrack on CD that was released at the same time as the movie. We both loved the soundtrack and she knew how much I especially loved it. It was the most thoughtful gift I never received from any peer at that time. Looking back she probably had a huge crush on me but I was too much of a dumb teen to realize haha. I still think of her for a moment whenever I listen through the soundtrack 😊
I can feel it! Such presents you getting just a few times in your life, if you happy.
Not to sound dramatic, but this movie literally transported me to this world when I went to go see it in the theaters. I couldn't stop thinking about Tron and its universe well after the seeing it and to this day it's still one of my favorite films. Also went to see it with my family and they just thought it was alright lol.
21:35 Gawd i love that beat !! So happy that you liked it too !!
22:08 - YES, they were asked to make the music FOR Tron, in return, the deal was that they get a few scenes in the movie
29:00 the person who is playing Rinzler is Anis Cheurfa, a stunt performer. He was actually snake eyes in the new movie back in 2021.
The daft punk music in this movie is amazing, i like how it can sound classical and modern
This movie deserves more recognition! Way ahead of its time.
I loved this movie so much when it came out can't count how many times I've watched it lol. The music, the concept, the actors, the cinematography just everything was amazing.
Many years ago i had a dream that had the bikes and the ones that fly but it was in our world and I used both of them and it's one of the best dreams I've ever had in my life ❤
Tron Legacy is one of those movies that immerse you and make you feel like you on another planet. That soundtrack slaps 🔥
This soundtrack is goated. End of Line has to be the hardest synth vibe ever concocted. This needs to be made into a video game with 3 sections - disc battle, lightcycles and the flyers with turrets; why hasnt someone made this game?! I'm sure it would sell - all 3 modes are inherently online pvp ready-made!
I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think the Wii game had all of those, meanwhile the PS3 one was more like God of War.
I love this movie so much. Despite being much more into arthouse stuff like Bergman and Żuławski, this movie is somehow my holy grail of cinema. The pure blockbuster experience.
Best Tron there is. The animated Tron uprising is pretty good. Just wish they made another.
They are.
They are! Tron: Ares
@@jeremybernstein7794 animated?
@@RayHardman7567 no sir! It should be falling into production soon, but I think it’s slated for 2026 if I’m not mistaken. Direct sequel to Tron: Legacy. Jared Leto is lead actor
@@jeremybernstein7794 ah.
One of the most underrated movies of all time - if this came out nowish, with modern CGI, it'd be called a masterpiece and Garrett Headlund would have become a megastar
this movie is a hidden gem
I don’t know why this didn’t do well in theaters , I’ve always LOVED it and still today the CGI and music is epic! LOVE IT!
Favorite movie of all time! So happy Seb got around to this one. Daft Punk went absolutely fucking INSANE on the soundtrack and the visuals are some of the best you’ll ever see in a film. Truly one of the most under appreciated movies ever
Imagine being 11 when this dropped i grew up on the 80s version thanks to my dad. Ao when this dropped i was blown away 😭. I still remember playing a pvp light cycle game on roblox that was actually fun .
To be fair, it wasn’t for those “failed” de aging attempts like in here and Rogue One, we wouldn’t be where we are like with the Irishman. The first ones through the wall…they always get bloodied.
They aren't comparable though, Tron Legacy and Rogue One are both fully CGI characters while De Niro in The Irishman isn't a CGI character
To be fair i always found the de-aging effect works in Clu's favor, it kinda creates a sense of uncanny valley,
This movie was my favorite movie for a long time. Still in my top 10.
4:30 He didn't actually commit any crimes. He's the majority shareholder, and therefore what he took was his own property. He also technically owns the building as well.
Tron is an absolute amazing movie, I can’t get over the neon lights vibe and concept of going into a games ecosystem.
Everyone who has ever seen this movie, would like to be in a Tron themed club/amusement park, the sheer colors would slap 👏 and take cool pics with the light Bikes!
There is a ride at Disney World called TRON Lightcycle ride, if I remember right. Supercarlin brothers youtube channel uploaded a video about it last year.
My brother and I loved this movie when we were kids.
At one of our birthdays we had a cake in the shape of a light cycle.
15:03 - There's actually a VR-compatible fan game made within PlayStation's "Dreams". It looks exactly like in the movie and it is awesome.
I love this movie so much, even though for some reason it got a lot of hate at the time.
The aesthetics are soo good, the clean, artifical style is really unique, the story and writing - while not terrible original and stellar - is still servicable...
but the music... Oh god, the music is something else.
Obviously we celebrate music composers like Hans Zimmer and Jon Williams for a good reason because they are gods at what they are doing... but what Daft Punk delivered here is insanely good as well. Definitely one of the best movie soundtracks in cinema history, for me at least.
Fits the atmosphere of the movie perfectly, always fits to the respective scenes and elevates them a 1000 times and even just on its own the music is so freaking good.
So good in fact that I regularly listen through the whole album while doing work and when tracks like Derezzed and End of Line start playing, they get my energy skyrocketing! :D
30:56 "It's like Captain America." Funny story about that. My Spouse is a big fan of Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan & Tron in the original and Alan in this one. Right after this movie came out, we found out that he was going to be one of the guests at DragonCon, a big Every-Fandom convention held in Atlanta, GA USA over the US's Labor Day Holiday weekend every year. Sort of the US Southeast's answer to San Diego Comic-Con, but with less media marketing dollars, and a lot more alcohol.
Now, Tron was not Boxleitner's only big role, as he was also the lead actor on Seasons 2-5 of Babylon 5, was on a spy-thriller series called Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and stared in a few Western movies, and so over the five days of the convention he had a lot of different activities where he was interacting with the convention goers, and my Spouse made it a priority to catch every single one.
Day One: Attended his panel on Babylon 5, sitting close to the front.
Day Two: scheduled Celebrity Photo-op where Bruce posed with the fans one at a time with my Spouse in their Tron Legacy inspired Original Character Cosplay.
Day Three: Visited his Autograph Table on the Walk of Fame, to get him to sign the photo from the day before. Because my Spouse had on entirely different cosplay that day, he didn't realize at first that it was the same person as the photo. Also got autographs on two Tron Legacy Disc toys, and a cowboy novel he'd written that we'd found in a used bookstore. He was flabbergasted to even see it, and didn't think it was even still in circulation. Spouse also had made him a customized, one-of-a-kind My Little Pony doll, done up in Tron Legacy style and gave it to him at the autograph table. He leaned over to the table next to him and teased his Babylon 5 co-star Mira Furlan with "I was given a pony! You don't have a pony!"
Day Four: Another panel, this one trying to hype up some steampunk show idea he was trying to get off the ground called "Lantern City". Again, we got close to the front. This panel also had some swag give-aways, as everyone who attended got promotional keychains and an autographed Lantern City Poster. As we come up to claim our posters, he recognized my Spouse with "Oh, it's you again!" even though they were in their third different cosplay of the convention.
Day Five: Mondays are a slow day for DragonCon. Usually everyone is packing up to go back to the real world. We had exactly zero Boxleitner plans that day. But because of some last minute cancellations we'd managed to score a room on the "Executive Level" of one of the convention hotels. And unlike most of the hotel, this came with free breakfast in the executive lounge. We're there fueling up for the final drive home after checking out. My Spouse had packed up all the cosplays and was just in a blue t-shirt with the Captain America shield on it. Just as we're finishing up, we hear someone behind us walking up and asking "So who are you supposed to be today?" It was Bruce, who apparently also had a room on the Executive Level. My Spouse peeped up with "I'm just me!" and he offered for us to get some phone selfies with him.
It wasn't until a few weeks after DragonCon, when my Spouse was looking up videos of the other conventions Boxleitner had attended earlier that year, including one where the con organizers had arranged for a birthday cake for him because he'd come to be a convention guest on his birthday. In that video of him getting the cake, he has on the exact same light blue Captain America t-shirt. I mean it makes sense that the guy who played a character known for throwing a round object to defeat the bad guys and then it boomerang reflects back to be caught would be a fan of another character with that same gimmick, but my Spouse had no idea. We're pretty sure that after seeing us every other day of the convention, when he saw my Spouse wearing the same shirt he'd worn on his birthday, that's why he decided to come say hi.
Amazibg story. I'm a fan of Bruce Boxleitner too. 😃
I haven’t clicked on a Seb video faster than when he did the first transformers

I drove 140miles to see this in imax before it was released and was soo worth it!
One of the only movies that I rewatch again and again, tirelessly.
This movie deserves a sequel with Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Too bad Disney didn't think so. So of course they are making a sequel without any of the old cast, writers or directors lol. And with Jared Leto as the lead.
It will fail
watched it when i was a kid at imax & in 3d, became one of my favourite films and still to date

this movie was definitely ahead of its time. it Failed so hard and Bombed at the Box Office, everyone hated it because it wasnt the original but now theres people who dont even care about the original who just see this one and love it for what it is. its a good film, just underappreciated.
Didn’t bomb it made 440mil on 170mil budget.
You’re gonna love that, SebScreen. There’s an animated stylized cartoon of Tron that happens before the events of this film Tron Legacy. The show is called Tron Uprising and it’s a cancelled show. You can make a reaction video with each episodes. The show might be a little for younger audiences but it’s really good animation. Those are the same people who worked on Spider Verse.

I watched this move in Disney World when it came out in one of their really nice theaters and It was crazy. The music was so loud the bass was shaking us.
The film's director Joseph Kosinski is getting a bit of a reputation as a master of legacy sequels.
Really ahead of the time! My family went to watch this movie in theaters when it came out because my little brother liked movies about cars and we thought he would enjoy himself and obviously didn't disappoint 😂
You need to see this in 3D!!!!
There's a reason this is my fav film! It's so damn cool and fun
For the record, Flynn actually CAN do absolutely anything in the Grid, in terms of his access to all of its code and such.
His limitation, is his human brain, and how the computer is emulating it and everything else about him while in the Grid.
Sort of like a god with omnipotence...but NOT omniscience. He can only do what he knows HOW to do. He can't simply will anything he wants into being, or such. His powers are limited explicitly by his ability to comprehend the coding of any given feature of the Grid.
Which, while he wrote almost all of it, is quite extensive...it's not absolute. Even after a thousand "years" in that place. He's still only human.
Watched it in 3D.. probably one of my first 3D movies i ever saw. and it was spectacular!
THANK YOU SEB. This is my favorite movie of all time and is severely underrated by people who can’t look past Clue’s (the fake version of the dad) cgi. Also yes Daft Punk did the whole soundtrack including the more orchestral songs for this movie. I am glad you could enjoy he film so much.

Love love love this movie!!! Got to see it in theaters and solely went for the music; came out loving the entire film 💜
Not only was this amazing in imax, but it was shot with 3D cameras and was absolutely stunning in the theaters.
The original is about Kevin Flynn, Jeff Bridges' character, getting trapped inside of a computer world run by a megalomaniacal security program called the Master Control Program. You're right that it's the same basic plot (real person trapped in a computer world trying to get out) but the context is very very different: no one created the original computer world of TRON *intentionally*, it just sort of happened by accident because *all* computer programs are like that, and no one knew before Flynn ended up inside.
The original film was very much "the average person is just hearing about these ‘computer’ and ‘program’ thingies, how can we make a fantasy story about that?". One setting aspect from the first film that the sequel assumed you're familiar with: programs on the grid resemble the users who created them, with Tron (one of Alan / Bruce Boxleitner's programs) being a major ally of Flynn in taking down the MCP. The original film also used the dreaded "blue = good, red = evil" color scheme, and had a *lot* of Star Wars DNA in the storytelling and visuals.
The original film featured a score written by Wendy Carlos, a very important pioneer of synthesizers and electronic music. Her work is... pretty atonal and hard to dance to, compared to modern electronic music. She's a little jarring compared to Daft Punk, TBH, who were more inspired by Giorgio Moroder (another famous synth pioneer). But even though it's undanceable, Carlos's music is really cool stuff. There's an Adult Swim parody video called "Live at the Necropolis: Lords of Synth" that really helps to put the three greats of the early 80s electronic music scene into historical perspective, complete with fairly accurate renditions of their styles. It's here on RUclips if you feel like searching for it.
definitely recommend the tv show of Tron that Disney xd did it was really good!!!
still remember watching this in the cinema, it was mind-blowing at the time
Clu's motive is that the Grid isn't enough. It's not infinite. It has "ends" to it.
Also, Clu now knows there's an entire endless universe beyond the Grid, and that it ultimately has control over the Grid. So, he wants out. He wants out so that he's not helpless on the Grid, as our universe does whatever it wants that might endanger his entire reality while he's powerless to stop it. He also wants a reality without boundaries.
The only way to truly save the Grid, for Clu...is to leave it.
