There's a lot more to TRON than just the visuals and "looking like a computer." In Legacy the Grid was designed by Flynn to be a world inhabited by programs as people, rather than the first movie where the Grid was Encom's own network and programs existed just to do their jobs. There's more to Legacy's Grid than just being the inside of a computer, it's a literal digital world Flynn created to study and learn from, hence why it looks more like a real city and the programs have no real-world functions like in the original. The original TRON was from the perspective of humans looking into a computer, whereas Legacy is much more from the perspective of programs living in it.
Another thing worth noting is the comparison between Kevin and Sam entering the Grid. The original TRON blew the secret of the Grid before Kevin was ever digitized, but Legacy kept the actual Grid unseen until Sam got there. The transition being fast and simple is to keep the mystique of what just happened until that moment when Sam finally steps outside, sees the Grid for the first time, and is confronted by the Recognizer. The effects in Legacy are used far more to tell the story of the Grid, whereas in the original the effects themselves are more the focus.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 3 года назад +124

even expanding on your great phrase of the original Tron being: humans looking inside a computer - the new Tron can be said to make the computer programs look out at the world (as the computer is made to immitate the real world to a degree, and even conjured a new form of artificial intelligence not connected to any pre-programmed software.
It's really taking the first movie and flipping it's concepts around, which I think many people may be overlooking.

I wrote code back in the 70’s and 80’s.
(0:44) it wasn’t “Tron” for electronic, Tron was a command code “Tron/Troff” stood for “Tron” Tracer-on, and “Troff” Tracer-off. Which back at that time (80’s when the movie was made), most code was written in some variant of basic for “high level” user code. When you ran a program it would stream the code on the screen as it ran, to show you what was going on when your system crashed due to whatever bugs was accidentally written in, so you could determine where the bad line of code was when it crashed.
    It was a debugging feature.
In the movie Tron’s function was, to monitor what was going on and shut down any unauthorized activity (Allen’s program) which would and did take down the MCP which was hijacking the “System” which is why Tron was represented as a “warrior”, it’s sole purpose was tracking and taking down rogue code.

"TRON" is actually a key concept of the film - it's a debugging command that was used in many dialects of BASIC that is the mnemonic for "TRace ON". When TRON is flagged the terminal prints the current line number being executed onscreen (or on paper if printing). This is a bit of an easter egg to the computer geeks watching the movie as the TRON character is "debugging" the MCP. TRON also has a mirror command "TROFF" - which sets the TRON flag off when done debugging.

In fact, in early versions of the script, the main character was referred to as “the electron man” and “TRON” derived from that.

I am pretty sure that the “Disney Studio Production Number” on the final shooting script was also 666.

Unpopular opinion, Tron: Legacy was a good movie
Edit: Since this comment somehow managed to get popular so quickly and since there are a lot of replies, let me clarify that I'm talking about how Legacy wasn't exactly a box office bomb, but had a sequel get cancelled because the writers and Disney suits see that other similar films (an example being Tommorowland and maybe, yes I know its a stretch but maybe the new Star Trek Movies that had a similar style) did poorly. Having invested like 200 million into Legacy, Disney didn't want to follow us Tommorowland with a similar move that would cost more and do worse
I highly hope that they make a sequel that does the franchise justice, and one that is a visual masterpiece way ahead of its time like both other Tron movies were and are. Thank you for reading my rambling.

    TRON wasn't "e-lec-TRON-ic".
TRON was an acronym for 'TRace ON', which was the point of the TRON program: to trace security breaches in the MCP. The TRON command itself (along with TROFF, itself counterpart to disable the mode) was a debugging tool available in some early implementations of BASIC.

Most other movies just throw it in as an afterthought, but Legacy and Avatar both feel like the directors wanted 3D the entire time, and certain scenes *really* benefit from it. Tron: Legacy was the first time I successfully saw 3D in a movie. Anaglyph(red/blue) doesn't work on me, and my mind just quickly cycles between the red and blue images, slowly enough to be noticeable which one it's focusing on, but fast enough to be headache inducing. My partner at the time extolled how good clear glasses 3D was and convinced me to see Tron: Legacy in 3D.
...I actually, legitimately cried, several times, throughout the film because of how beautiful this digital world I felt I was _in_ was. I leaned away in shock at the screen coming towards me, flinched when the disc flew at me, then tried to reach up and grab it. Attempted to touch multiple things and apparently spent the film with an expression of pure wonder. I remember nothing but the crying(because it impeded my vision), and had to be told about it later, by my partner who had spent as much of the time in the cinema watching the movie as watching my reactions to it because apparently... Guy who has little to no depth perception in real life, cannot see more primitive forms of 3D, and is now experiencing _proper depth_ for the first time in his memory is an enjoyable thing to watch.

0:50 TRON was not because of "elec-TRON-ic." TRON is actually a computer intruction: TRace ON. It was meant to reveal what was happening within the computer system as the program code was running. From TRON to the end of that function, the screen would show things like registers, variables, etc. To end that function, a programmer would issue TROFF.
So, Tron could be meant to reveal anything in the system which was happening that shouldn't. After speaking with Flynn (because he triggered a system alert by trying to hack into "The System"), Alan engaged Tron to find out what was happening and to fight the big "MCP" (Master Control Program - the main villain of the movie).
Also, Jeff Bridges' "program" in the beginning of the original Tron Movie was named, CLU. So, he was attempting to reveal "clues" as to who the actual programmer was for the games that Dilinger took credit for (and made all kinds of money)... even though it was Flynn who programmed them.
Also, the Tron game cited was one of two which came out after the movie. The classic four-game arcade and Tron Disc.
Plus the actors said that they never appreciated color more than when they left the studio after a day of shooting... since everything on the sets was black-and-white. They said the night lights and displays were overwhelming :-)

I'm gonna disagree with Sam and Niko on this one, I think the look of Tron Legacy is just about perfect. I totally understand what you're saying about the raw, hand-crafted feel and the very hardware-oriented art direction, but Tron had to change its aesthetic because the aesthetics of computers themselves have changed. When you buy top of the line hardware now you don't get a gray block, an exposed circuit board, or anything resembling the original Tron aesthetic. What do you get? Sleek, black, LED, etc. Not to mention that the focus of computers has radically shifted from being about impressive hardware making things possible, to innovative software making things possible. All that said, I think Tron Legacy really captures the evolution of what computers are in the public consciousness compared to its 1982 predecessor.

They just pour a lot of money on it, but never talent, never skill and of course, never anything original, because that would be a risk. The original Tron film from 1982 was truly groundbreaking. More than some Generation Y and Z 3D artists spoiled by convenient tools, fast computers, real-time rendering and a 24/7 internet might realise.
    1. It was the first full-length feature film to be heavily supported by rendered computer graphics. Before that, we only knew short, garish and strange demo films that dived deep into the uncanny valley.
    2. What you see in the film in terms of effects and CGI stretched the possibilities of the time to the limit. And it was a cumbersome, tedious and certainly often frustrating pioneering work that even today does not get the recognition it really deserves. At the time, at least, it didn't get it, as far as I can remember as a contemporary witness.
    3. The designs (set design, style, colours, costumes, vehicles) by Syd Mead, Moebius, Robert Abel and others were so groundbreaking and unique that even decades later they still inspire, influence and are quoted. In architecture (my field of activity), in design, in fashion, etc. Basically, it was also the first credible cinematic staging/visualisation of a cyberspace concept. For me, Tron is a design classic on par with 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Blade Runner.
The film flopped because the audience (and also the professional critics) were far from ready for it. Just like Blade Runner. Tron visually irritated the mainstream audience and hit a society where very few people used computers or could associate anything at all with the concepts presented. The small, interested audience segment (new wavers, tech nerds, sci-fi & comic fans...) was in turn irritated by the somewhat too fairytale-like, cheesy story.

Bruh, Tron (2010) was the best action movie I had ever seen as a kid, it’s just so exciting and it really brought me into the story

It impacted me so much as a kid. It was the reason I got into filmmaking. The 2010 version I mean

I was just thinking about that. This movie was so much better because of the soundtrack. So good, and I have so many of the songs/remixes from that score in my playlists.

THANK YOU, it irritated me so much that the guys didn't even mentioned the soundtrack. It is hands down up there in the top 10 OSTs of all time, in my opinion.

@@DarthBiomech Well, its a *VFX* Artists react, not a Audio Engineers react.
Granted, I wouldn't mind an episode with Foley artists and such reacting to movie sounds and soundtracks.

I was a kid when this came out and I WAS blown away by the original movie. I had all the action figures and even a TRON themed birthday cake.

There was a lightcycle in Flynn's hideout that had a design like the original film but with a more sleek and modern design to it. So that was a little dab of retro
