    Nick's been hiding his super talented and charismatic dad from us this whole time?! Alex was fantastic. Such a great episode. Up there with the Star Wars as one of my favorites. The blend of practical / CGI is always super fascinating to me.

      He's definitely one of Hollywood's most underrated actors. I grew up watching The Mummy and I knew a bit was VFX, but to learn the mummies weren't even there goes to show how much talent he really has. Amazing.

    Adam Savage as a guest would be treasure trove of understanding some stunts and special / visual effects, not only due to his industry experience, but also his time deconstructing such things on Mythbusters

      @@AndreNitroX it's honestly great that the movie treats the mummies with a sense of fun and adventure. The vfx don't detract as much from the movie-watching experience today since the mummies also act a little cartoonish while also looking cartoonish.

    This was fun to see! I worked on matte paintings for "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" at ILM, including that monster opening shot from the first film. Good to see Alex again, haven't seen him in years!

      Right? My family still enjoys The Mummy to this day. It's isn't that unusual for us to invite someone over (or have some of the younger ones) and turn this movie on. Not every movie can brag that their VFX holds up over 20 years later (for as fast as tech develops).

      We actually still have the original limited edition DVD box that they released after The Mummy Returns. Looks almost like new, considering my parents didn't waste a second thinking about buying it when it came out. Piece of history right there.

    This was easily one of your best episodes ever. Alex is such a massively talented artist and seems like a really great guy. Super jealous of Nick. Must have been amazing to grow up with him as your dad. And then get to go into a similar field as him.

      This would be ace. I also think a review of how creatures have been done with special effects throughout the years, so effects in stuff like Gremlins 1 and 2 vs stuff like the war for the planet of the apes and Peter rabbit. Think a new Gremlins film would be quality.

    As an Art Director (art department) working for Lucasfilm & Disney its fantastic watching your videos! IThere is quite a few of us in my office who which your videos and love what you put out there! I know you do so much on the vfx side it would be great to see a video showing how the art department work with VFX creating these real and digital worlds!

      I saw this movie for the first time as a child, one Christmas Eve.
      Scared the everloving shit out of me. The scarab beetles, especially. Had nightmares for weeks about the damned things burrowing into my skin, eating me alive.

    This Films DVD bonus disc was actually the one that inspired me as a child to become a concept artist, and I remember this specific mummy drawing being the one that made me say out loud ( I’m gonna do that when I grow up ).
    I’m a 20 year old now and I Love seeing this again.
    Thank you Alex for opening my childhood imagination up to a world of unlimited possibilities.

    Alex has such incredible art, stunning. Seeing Brendan Fraser actually doing that fight scene alone was impressive. He really sells the impacts, I truly thought he was fighting actual people in like green suits or something. Great episode, thanks guys!

      Yeah, if you watch it carefully, he trully sells the move he done masterfully, he simulate all the impact of the hit so the CG didnt feel weightless

    I’ve been waiting for this episode from the very moment Nick mentioned that his dad worked on The Mummy in one of the Corridor Crew videos of old. I’m so happy they had the opportunity to get him on the show because The Mummy is one of my favorite movies of all time. Alex seems like a cool guy - talented and full of amazing behind the scenes nuggets.

    It’s funny that he mentions the inaccuracies of the mummy in Egyptian architecture and culture because in an ancient Egyptian archaeology class I took, we watched the movie and went through as many as we could find haha

      It would be interesting to hear more about the process of creating reference art like that and how they think about historical accuracies and why they choose not the be historically accurate, ad he is obviously aware. Where to draw the line kinda.

    How good was this episode!!!
    Wren's reactions are pretty much my reactions as Mr. Laurant's stories are pretty cool! I mean, just casually mentioning that he and the Mythbusters go way back. I did get a bit chocked up with that photo of Grant.
    Nick cringing at his dad's puns is everyone of us when our parents are around our friends.
    And like Niko said, being able to see all of that concept art is epic. Great job you guys and thank you Mr. Laurant!

    The first Mummy movie was a true masterpiece. On the other hand, even the sequels are really great when compared to Tom Cruise's disastrous movie 😆

    When I saw Niko and Wren guessing how the miniature shot with the sphinx and building was made, I smiled so hard! One of Universal Studios Hollywood's shows actually brings up how they made that scene and even show (probably not the original) the sphinx miniature with the blue screen behind it. I always went to that show and knowing Wren and Niko were a bit stumped on that shot made me so excited XD.

      Some of the shots of the city transforming in dark city are so mindblowing - so many little details selling the illusion (and no doubt getting your eye to focus away from the jankier aspects). The art direction is so cool too! from the neo noir lighting, the retro architecture; the villains "flying" seems to be pretty standard wirework but their stillness is so intimidating and iconic!

    Videos like this make me appreciate the effort and sheer creativity that went into blending 3D models and CGI. It was like a competition between studios to trial different methods and create the most realistic shot. I have nothing against the use of CGI today, but this is certainly a cool aspect of what was.

    This is easily one of my favourite episodes on Corridor Crew. The Mummy has been a staple of my entire life and this was one of the first films that made me aware and curious about VFX, along with Jurassic Park and Back to the Future.

    I’d love to see a werewolf transformation supercut: Wolfen, Howling, Lon Chaney Jr’s original, etc. and of course the king of them all, An American Werewolf in London… Transformation can make or break a werewolf movie, I’d love to see the best and the worst!

    I think this was after the 90s but the van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman blew my mind when I was young it definitely doesn't hold up now, but I remember I walked out of the theater and thought it was just the coolest thing ever. That would be a good example of how far the digital effects have come in such a short time

      YES! I don't know why, but those beetles (along with stage 1 Imhotep) gave me nightmares growing up! Still absolutely loved the film so much and easily Brendan Fraser's best work!

    What a great guest! Huge fan of the Mummy and even with fandom aside this was truly one of the best ever episodes from this channel!!! What inspires and enthralls me the most about film and especially this channel is getting to see the overview/intersection of all this crazy talent from different departments coming together to create something special.
