This is hands down the BEST guest we’ve seen on this show. His experience tied with how amazing his speaking is…such a good episode. Real passion about what they do!! Respects
He was such a trooper when they talked about the scorpion king. It was kind of nice to at least give him a platform to provide an explanation for that on top of all the other amazing things he’s worked on.
Gotta be honest, since the first time I watched it 20 years ago to now, I genuinely thought John's character in the post office was an animatronic made specifically to look like a "weird" human...
His look is so unique. He reminded me of that famous Neanderthal man model that was all over the news years ago. His large ears, blue eyes and thin red hair--he could be one walking among us. (Not an insult!)
I honestly feel John is one of the best guests you've ever had. His passion for the craft, depth of knowledge and wealth of experience make him an invaluable source to draw upon, and it's wonderful to see him devoting the time to come and share what he has accumulated with the rest of us.
I think CGI will be like all new technologies, when they are first mastered they are used to death, everywhere, think of synthesizers in 80's music and stereo recording in the 70's. Eventually they are toned back however and it is learnt how to use it properly, subtly is normal the goal, then simply used as another potential tool in the toolbox, I'm hoping we are getting there with CGI, Marvel movies are still well over drenched, but I have seen a number of modern movies where they are back to trying to get as much as possible in camera, which is awesome.
Another small detail I love about Mikey in Men In Black: when he roars into the camera, the background plate adjusts focus as if that CGI model is a real thing and the camera guy has to keep it's face in focus.
Reminds me of my favorite tiny detail in Jurassic Park, when the T-rex first breaks out of the paddock and steps out in a full CGI shot that shows the entire dinosaur for the first time. As the T-Rex steps up and out where the fence is broken, it rears up a little "too far" and the camera has to subtly tilt up to follow it and keep it in frame, as if an actual animal did something unexpected and the cameraman had to adjust in response. Of course the reality is that things had to be planned in the opposite sequence of events, but it goes such a long way in subconsciously convincing your brain that the character is "real" regardless of how rendering and shaders and "detail" has improved in the years since it was released.
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once should be reacted to definitely. For having a low budget compared to many other movies, it was able to achieve so much with their combination of computer and practical effects. Also, LEGEND - A DRAGON BALL TALE is an amazing fan animation that can show what can be created by dedicated fans for animators react.
12:08 this has become one of my favorite behind the scenes stories. Basically, we don't want you to use visual effects, we need you to be a visual effect
This is honestly one of the best long running series on RUclips, I've learnt so much and appreciate films so much more thanks to this show and the understanding it gives me
That's a really good idea. Over the course of generations, we see the upgrades of the suitmation and the blending of environments. As well as the different energy attacks on the actors and buildings.
The VFX in Shin Godzilla are really impressive. I honestly thought they used some kind of puppet in at least some of the shots, but no, iirc it was all CGI.
Comparing the original Gojira, The Return of Gojira (1984) and Shin Gojira would be an excellent episode. They're three distinct films from three distinct periods. Gojira is the grandfather of such effects, 1984 was a turning point for their ability to articulate and Shin Gojira was the first film to be truly modern (not counting the American Godzilla films, but those were big-budget CGI fests so not as interesting to delve into how they did it).
I love that this unsung hero is getting recognition on here, there are so many people like him that have impacted the industry in huge ways that no one has ever heard of... love what you guys are doing. Keep it up Corridor!
I'd love to see you guys react to: -Fight Club. This film has some impressive CGI shots. I especially love the intro! - Spiderman 1 (2002) -Spiderman 3 (2007) - the sandman and venom effects. It'd be interesting to compare it to Venom from 2018 and 2021. - Silent Hill (2006) - the otherworld transitions, the monsters designs are impressive, and the part where Dark Alessa "Integrates" herself into Rose is also very cool. -Stranger Things - they have such great vfx shots! especially in season 4. Also, in Season 4, they have a very impressive one shot shooting scene. It'd be cool to see you analyze it.
@@tadeasburger8191 The shots where the vines move and make up venom's face/reveal eddie's face are kinda cool, plus the shots where peter rips it off and then it goes to eddy. The whole "goo" effects look impressive for 2007 imo.
Loved seeing John on! I've noticed a trend with a lot of these experts in their craft. First, they understand how their job fits into the whole. They don't focus purely on the technical details, but they understand that the purpose of VFK is to help tell the story. E.g. John loved that Will Smith would improv and they accounted for that in how they shot his scenes, rather than him being annoyed that he has to adjust the plan. Second, these experts recognize there is no cookie-cutter way to do anything. You'll often hear "it depends", it's a bit of a meme but experts understand exactly what should guide the use of one technique vs another and you can only get that with experience.
John is awesome, and I love when you guys go over old pre-CGI effects. So awesome to see the creativity and craftsmanship that went into these amazing shots.
I've been thinking forever they should have a series or episodes dedicated to practical effects and animatronics. It is truly a lost artform. Some of the most magical and mind blowing effects were animatronic or makeup fx predating CGI.
John looks like he’s been drawn by Felix Colgrave, who incidentally would make a great guest on animator reacts. If you manage to lure him out of his cave
First time I've seen Felix colgrave mentioned in the wild! His art is my favorite thing to binge every few weeks and is some of the best .. well... ART I've ever seen

I've been loving John episodes, please bring him back, i like when the guests share their thoughts on combining practical and digital but John has a great understanding of this concepts and he is really good explaining and sharing them
John's insight is incredible, no doubt. But I have to admit that the first time they had him on and I saw the thumbnail my FIRST thought was "that's the guy from Men in Black 2!!!" And that's saying something because I've watched that movie exactly one time haha
13:20 "so much work for a shot" I agree but this scene literally stuck with me forever. I knew I recognized John from something when I saw him in your previous VFX react and when I saw this MIB scene it all came back lol. legend!
That "the effects have to interact with the real thing" remembered me of when they have people in suits like Rhino or Bruce Banner in the Iron Man suit; the cutout and lighting might be awesome, but there's no interaction between the head and the armor
I think Wren is a great interviewer. His excitement feels genuine and you can tell it is contagious with the guest. It seems to lead the guest to be more open and want to talk about what they love doing.
Notice how all older effects artists always just never stop reiterating using practical to fill in cgi shots. Iron bar, net and so forth to sell the scene and minimize The Jank. Yes you guys gotta have him back!
How amazing and sweet personality John has, he need to be in more episodes! The way he explain things with all the passion of his craft is endearing and very motivating.
I love when different types of effects people do such great work together. Rick Baker is legendary. He's done such amazing work. When Berton makes something that balances and augments it, it's truly a melding of different art.

On reflection, the amount of quality VFX that the Corridor Crew achieve on their very limited budget is incredible. Just picture the scale of stuff they could do if they had a blockbuster budget. Just millions and millions thrown at them to kick out the best stuff it’d be mind blowing, they’d blow it out the water🤯

John is an absolute gem of a person with such great knowledge. That ending sentence resonated with me, having watched Prey (the new Predator installment) yesterday, that comment thicked all the boxes. In my opinion that movied did just that. Also a good movie to scrutinize the VFX and practical effects.

Do Mork’s “Bully Maguire” videos next. They actually have a surprising amount of production quality. (They are also some of the funniest videos on the internet in my opinion.)
John still getting geeked and excited to talk about his craft is an absolute pleasure. Honestly, looking at some of these clips makes me think that CGI in some ways isn't as good as it once was when more practical had to be infused with CG. I'm amazed with how good some of those MIB shots look.
Something else I noticed with the transition to puppets at 4:45 is that they're both tired and she's hanging off of him. That makes the change to stop-motion jutteriness look more like fatigue than animation limitations.
I adore these old filmmaking tricks. They were so creative! There was a vision and problem solving, so good, that you can't see how they did it. Today, we use the same tricks, but they're all buttons in the software
Definitely my MOST favorite couch guest of them all. So chill, so full of wisdom. More of him as the guest please! his voice and delivery is therapeutic.
Just saw "Nope" last week and read an article talking about the rig they used to film day for night. I could have SWORN they filmed at night. Was wondering if you guys had any insights or thoughts? I think day for night usually looks like crap, but they REALLY made it work.
@@kylespevak6781 one of the most noticable instances is Life of Brian, the „Romans go Home“ graffiti scene. They darkened an incredibly bright day shot. You see hyper crisp shadows and clouds.
This was amazing. Those early VFX pioneers really were geniuses. I love seeing these early films still blowing peoples minds with their techniques and solutions to the ideas they had.
John Berton would be a joy for you to bring back. His episodes so far were both fun and insightful. He knows what he's talking about, he explains the details very well, has great chemistry with Niko and Wren, and is entertaining as he does it.
So isnt it bad timing then? You were anyway going to go to sleep. (But now you are unnecessarily staying awake) And now you dont have anything to watch on (your) Sunday morning too.
Great video as usual! Highly informative! I love in the King Kong segment, how the replacement of the actors at points with stop motion puppets feels like the early days of replacing actors with CGI at points in modern films
The City of Lost Children!!! This whole movie is visually stunning. Very hard movie to find. Has Ron Perlman in it. If you guys like crazy visuals and practical FX, This movie has it all. Not to mention a great story. Very trippy.
It's always awesome to see the people, who have brought the movies come to live, that i have watched 10-20 years ago. And seeing how passionate these people are, especially john just makes those movies even more awesome. I love to see them just geek out over this stuff
It would be incredible if you could get James Cameron on a VFX artists react & have it as a full hour long episode on RUclips. He has personally pushed computer graphics much further than any other director has.
Has he though? Seems to me, most of his iconic stuff came from ILM, which was a passion project of one George Lucas, the director to push the visual effects industry the most.
John Berton made an excelent outro, that's exactly what I say for years, except he perfectly articulates the thoughts because not only he is smarter than me but also he actually knows the business :) Loved him as guest, do bring him back! :)
Sometimes while watching these videos, I forget that they have legends sitting there on the couch. I think this is because it is super well done and full of passionate stories. You are in it focused on the footage and the explanation of the effects, cg or not.
Y'all may have already checked this one out, but if not, I'd love to see Real Steel on this series cause I always thought those humongous robots looked amazing. 👌
I really enjoyed this! I’m obsessed with VFX and cgi but especially practical effects done super well. His obvious passion and talent just came through so clearly it just made this video extra enjoyable. Listening to people talk passionately about things they love is just the best
I appreciate the sponsor countdown, and also using the same guy every time. I don’t even know his name, but I know to skip anything I see with him. Perfect!

I love this guest. He is a treasure. I hope we will see him in many more videos. It would be great if he could "VFX Supervise" one of Corridor's projects sometime. I'd love to see how he works. Really I would just love to see MORE of anything involving this guy.
John Berton is by far a seminar/master class guest here! There's so much wisdom and passion in his words!!! Man! I felt compelled to produce and create just by watching this video! Great work guys! Amazing work!!! John you are a master!!!!
"VFX should show me something I can't see in real life" I honestly think this is precisely why super hero movies do so well, you can _only_ see that kind of content on the screen.

I will never cease to be amazed at how good some visual effects were before CGI. That handshake is insane.

Something else I noticed with the transition to puppets at 4:45 is that they're both tired and she's hanging off of him. That makes the change to stop-motion jutteriness look more like fatigue than animation limitations.
One of your best guests. Calm, smart, knowledgable. Into his craft.
Surprisingly a lot of night shots are filmed at day, or at least with more light than you think
@@kylespevak6781 for sure, but usually big sweeping shots like in Nope are noticably day for night. Nope really took it to the next level.
I would love a whole day-for-night episode!
@@cckonettaxptor611 same
@@kylespevak6781 one of the most noticable instances is Life of Brian, the „Romans go Home“ graffiti scene. They darkened an incredibly bright day shot. You see hyper crisp shadows and clouds.
This was amazing. Those early VFX pioneers really were geniuses. I love seeing these early films still blowing peoples minds with their techniques and solutions to the ideas they had.
I love Wills performance in MIB, absolutely slaps.
John Berton would be a joy for you to bring back. His episodes so far were both fun and insightful. He knows what he's talking about, he explains the details very well, has great chemistry with Niko and Wren, and is entertaining as he does it.
Perfect timing. 2am, was just about to go to bed.
This is normally my Sunday morning coffee watch.
Best series on RUclips hands down
Loved Mr. Breton, all his knowledge, and his straight ahead, low key and humble demeanor.
The City of Lost Children!!! This whole movie is visually stunning. Very hard movie to find. Has Ron Perlman in it. If you guys like crazy visuals and practical FX, This movie has it all. Not to mention a great story. Very trippy.
Agreed. Along in the same vein Brotherhood of the Wolf for this and Stuntpeople React.
Out of all the guest, John Berton is my favorite. He looks and sounds like such a down to earth guy.
John seems to be such a nice guy.
John Berton made an excelent outro, that's exactly what I say for years, except he perfectly articulates the thoughts because not only he is smarter than me but also he actually knows the business :)
Loved him as guest, do bring him back! :)
Great video as always, keep up the amazing work!
John's a great guest, so glad he was back so soon. Looking forward to more from him. You guys have just been killing it lately.
Yes! I have been looking forward to more of this guy!
Perfect!
@@priyeshpv that's a fucked up thing to say.. he's a human being with a job to do not a puppet. The timer is there to skip the ad to the right point to stop people like you complaining over literally nothing it shouldn't bother you
"They look around and go.....there he is" That is ROUGH buddy. Love John as a guest. Would love more episodes with him!
I feel like they need to do a super episode, have John on, Adam, etc just pull in a ton of hosts and have a video of them reviewing stuff.
I love this guest. He is a treasure. I hope we will see him in many more videos. It would be great if he could "VFX Supervise" one of Corridor's projects sometime. I'd love to see how he works. Really I would just love to see MORE of anything involving this guy.
I feel like you guys should react to Doc Ock’s robotic tentacles from both “No way home” and Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2”
They kinda did in a "spider man 2 vs spider man 2 vs spider man 2" video. I don't remember if they reacted to the no way home tentacles though.
@@ethai1 NWH wasn't out by then
@@nehemiahsomers4141 I meant in a later video, not the same one.
John is amazing. I really hope you have more content with him recorded and/or planned.
Anyone else want more episodes of animator react to anime
For sure
I wanna see some reactions to One Piece 1015 and some Chainsaw Man when it drops
Yes, it's been over a year since the last one
Yaa.
John Berton is by far a seminar/master class guest here! There's so much wisdom and passion in his words!!! Man! I felt compelled to produce and create just by watching this video! Great work guys! Amazing work!!! John you are a master!!!!
"VFX should show me something I can't see in real life"
I honestly think this is precisely why super hero movies do so well, you can _only_ see that kind of content on the screen.
Or a comic... :)
Glad to have a guest who gave so much detail but yet made it simple enough to understand first time.
Love the double take John does towards Wren at 1:01 - Wren has the biggest smile and John is like - you staring at me bro!
This guy is a lengend and speaks legend every time he does. I'm relly happy you guys bring the artists who shaped cinema and give them the love they deserve.
Honestly love John. He's a joy to hear talk about this stuff.
I love when the guests are able to match the energy and passion you guys have. Good wholesome stuff.
