@@SchrodingersDinger All of that talk of the reactor being able to "explode like a nuke" and "raze Minsk to the ground" and how their "heroic efforts saved the world" was propaganda put out by the Soviet Union to make themselves not look like the incompetent fools they were. The truth is that A) the reactor *could not* explode like a nuke. They literally physically cannot do that. A nuke is designed to release all of the energy in the reaction within a millisecond (or less, ideally). A nuclear reactor is designed to release it as slowly, and as controlled as possible. B) Even if it could explode like that, the size of the explosion they quoted wouldn't even set car alarms off in Minsk, let alone have destroyed the city. Not even Pripyat (I think that's the name), which is basically a stone's throw from the reactor comparatively, would've had more than windows blow out at their quoted detonation. C) The reactor itself, as I recall, isn't what exploded - the steam system did. It over-pressurized and exploded. There was then a later secondary explosion most likely caused by the casing of the rods (I forget the exact metal composition, but it contains a highly alkaline metal) falling into the coolant, but I don't think anyone knows for sure. It bugs me how many people still believe the propaganda from this. This event, along with Three Mile Island (another case of human error, iirc) and Fukushima (not exactly the reactor's fault it was hit by a tsunami and earthquake, and all-in-all survived it pretty well), are what gets quoted as "NUCLEAR BAD COAL GOOD COAL SAFER" etc, when, objectively, nuclear power is one of the safer generators available. Their main downside is storage of spent fuel, but there are ways to mitigate that with designs *not* based on uranium-238.
Back in the day when Battlestar Galactica was on I was convinced they had the best space fights I've ever seen. The scenes were made so well you could feel the intensity and the danger. You should react to the 90s CGI in the Robin Williams movie "What Dreams May Come". It used special effects in a really creative way that we haven't seen since then. I would love some insight into how they might have created those images.
There's some really cool stuff in that. But one thing drives me CRAZY...if you're shooting an indie in 2005, why would you have your lead wear WHITE on a green screen??? There's spill on her for the entire movie, I don't know why they did that to themselves.

Looks like the interior of the cabinet would’ve been rapidly replaced with another which already had the food pre-placed and glued there. They might’ve had it set up on a rail, so they could just slide one out and the other one in.
@3:00 I would say that the first time I saw this technique used was in the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. The shakey, handheld camera, documentary feel shots that moves between the characters was super effective. That scene was so powerful and disturbing, it left me thinking about it for months after I saw it.
Would love to see an episode (series?) on "Puppeters React" - there's a ton of cool practical (or practical/hybrid) creature work from Star Wars, Hellboy, Where The Wild Things Are, et that'd be fun to see covered!

@@SchrodingersDinger Seconding this. I think the line "That is how an RBMK reactor core
explodes.
.. Lies." was pretty on the nose...
BRING ALEX ON MORE VIDEOS!!! He's the most awesome dad ever and his insight and experience is a gift to us
Back in the day when Battlestar Galactica was on I was convinced they had the best space fights I've ever seen. The scenes were made so well you could feel the intensity and the danger. They felt alive. They fights didn't have the flashiest and the most grandiose CG effects, but there was something that made the simpler, better.
You guys should react to the legend of Zelda fan film titled “Terrible Fate” it has some really interesting effects that I think you guys would like.
Duuude I love that film!
Curse of the Black Pearl.
Dead Man’s Chest.
At Worlds End.
‘Ye know what to do.
It's a shame that the Battle of the Bastards was where Game of Thrones peaked, but, damn what an episode to fall from.
Na, man. Hardhome was where it peaked.
@@elitemook4234 Was just gonna say that. Hardhome was not only the peak of GoT, but one of the best episodes in TV history. Also fun fact, Miguel Sapochnik, who only directed six episodes of GoT, directed both Hardhome and Battle of the Bastards.
@@ashb7 luckily the guy who directed hardhome, battle of the bastards and winds of winter is doing the new house of the dragon prequel show
nah season 4 was peak
@@phatlewt2932 exactly after that was just pure decline in writing. Characters getting ruined and plot holes everywhere.
Breaking down Band of Brothers and The Pacific would be amazing.
You should react to the 90s CGI in the Robin Williams movie "What Dreams May Come". It used special effects in a really creative way that we haven't seen since then. I would love some insight into how they might have created those images.
Yes. Agreed!
I agree. Some of those scenes were crazy. That river of faces or people if I am not wrong. That was crazy!
+1
Good shout!
Mirror Mask. Yall, it's INSANE. the WHOLE MOVIE. it's TRIPPY. PLEASE.
YES
I legit watched it the other day again, is definitely a odd movie and would be great if they reacted to it
There's some really cool stuff in that. But one thing drives me CRAZY...if you're shooting an indie in 2005, why would you have your lead wear WHITE on a green screen??? There's spill on her for the entire movie, I don't know why they did that to themselves.
@@WeeklyComedian Right!? I just... I have so many questions about that movie and I hope they look at it some day because I am curious for more takes.
Watching them talk about Chernobyl makes me want to watch not only the HBO miniseries again, but also all of Kyle Hill's Half Life History episodes again, Kyle's narration is just sublime.
The horses running into each other looks like they used Euphoria physics
It's good to have an "older" set of eyes on the react couch. Gives some added perspective from someone who's worked in the industry.
There's a practical effects shot in the 1st spy kids where Carmen opens a cabinet and nothing is in there, but less than 5 seconds later it's packed with food and looks naturally placed. I've watched over and over but can't figure it out! Any help? Haha
When you rewatch the scene to figure it out and also for nostalgia 😂😂
Looks like the interior of the cabinet would’ve been rapidly replaced with another which already had the food pre-placed and glued there. They might’ve had it set up on a rail, so they could just slide one out and the other one in.
I see you double comments
I cant find the scene what should I search?
Bruh, sorry but... That's not that hard to do. 🥲
I always like it when a different channel I love shows up in someone else's video. Hi, Tom! 😁
For HBO stuff, "Band of Brothers, and its sister series of "The Pacific" are both well deserving of a look.
Yep. They both have great effects. Both computer and practical.
Wren: "Hide your kids and your wife." So good 😂
😂😂good thing he didn’t say the next line
Nick's dad clearly didn't know the reference.
Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Generation Kill... Go!
@3:00 I would say that the first time I saw this technique used was in the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. The shakey, handheld camera, documentary feel shots that moves between the characters was super effective. That scene was so powerful and disturbing, it left me thinking about it for months after I saw it.
I want Alex to be a regular on this show
Niko: Battle of the Bastards is the best battle on film
Return of the king: *Doubt*
Yep, LoTR stands quite well even after so many years
Battle of the bastards is ok, but any big fight in braveheart or waterloo is superior just because there is no CGI. ROTK is great too.
Yeah the HBO shilling was blatant.
He was so careful to qualify it as just opinion, but here you've done exactly what he didn't and outright stating another battle IS the best
I prefer helms deep
Would love to see an episode (series?) on "Puppeters React" - there's a ton of cool practical (or practical/hybrid) creature work from Star Wars, Hellboy, Where The Wild Things Are, et that'd be fun to see covered!
The Dark Crystal series!!!!
Team America 😅
Jurassic Park's had some puppets too, now that I think of it. (Including one puppeteer you can see in the movie!)
Nick's dad is awesome, his takes are perfect and his interactions with niko and wren are just 👌🏽 keep him coming please
Can you guys take a look at the CG in the movie “No Country for Old Men”. In the early part of the movie where Llewelyn(Josh Brolin) is hunting those deer and they look so good and the lighting looks really good but it’s not until he takes the shot and they ran, then I noticed that the movement looked strange. Can you guys analyze that movie?
I remember finding out that was CGI in a video. Never realised it at all previously. Might be good looking at Coen Brothers in general - O Brother Where Art Thou? was a revolution in digital filmmaking and it's rarely mentioned because it's so subtle.
@@unluckytourist hmm I’ve never heard of that movie. Is it great dialog like no country for old men. That movie is so cool. One of the things I like in that movie is the absence of music in the movie. They don’t use music to set the mood of the scenes. It’s just pure atmospheric sound with great acting. A similar movie is also Jackie brown. Hardly any music
@@keino111689 O Brother Where Art Thou? is like the opposite of No Country For Old Men, a tale heavily inspired by (greek) Homer's Odyssey, just set in 1930s Mississippi. Very funny, a lot of music
@@AccAkut1987 ok cool. I’ll check that out.
its weird to call the 80s history, but its genuinely been that long now
and to think i own 4 cars from the mid 80...
To be fair history is not required to be old it just means the past like something you searched on google yesterday is still called history
History is what happened 1 second ago.
Stop making me feel old!
technically speaking, we are all processing stimuli from the world around us AFTER it has taken place. The visual image from our eye to brain is milliseconds behind. Pretty trippy when you think about it.
Poor guy, he’s gonna be called nicks dad for a long time.
LOVED seeing Nick's dad again. I also love that we're all out here calling him Nick's Dad.
Nicks dad sounds like a Jeff Goldbum variant
I think it would be interesting to look at the VFX in “His Dark Materials” and contrast them with those in “The Golden Compass” movie.
They have done it all ready
I think they already have in a previous episode
Chernobyl was truly so great. Instant classic. I appreciate the dedication to history and accuracy. Amazing work
Pretty cool to hear Wren's fav effect from Watchmen was Looking Glass' mask. I was an animator on the mask effect.
There's a show on HBO MAX called The Valley of tears and it has tank battles. Whenever you see more than two tanks the camera is static but in the last battle the camera moves a lot. Can you explain it to me?
I know this show is mostly based on TV and film, but I feel it would be a cool idea if you guys did a whole episode on music videos. There are really cool VFX used in music videos, both past and present.
I wish they'd react to more bad cgi. This series has become "VFX artists talk about their favorite cgi"
Yeah they should’ve just called this “vfx artists ignore bad cgi” or “vfx artists react to great cgi”
Well this one was for HBO, so you didn't really expect them to point out a lot of bad things, did you?
This was sponsored by HBO, so they’re not going to slate it are they? Fool
@@MC-cp3po yeah but in the end it makes them look like sellouts, hbo pretentious af they should allow criticisms because I saw whole load of bad cgi coming from them
I love the fact that they often feature other youtubers I am subscribed to's content, and it just feels like a big youtube friend group.
Not an HBO suggestion but how about that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie??? Could be for the CGI or the downright silly fight scenes.
Episode 41 covers it a bit
I think they did that already
The Crew wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t think this was all high quality VFX. HBO has been crushing it for years.
They just conveniently did not mention any bad vfx at all
Hob paid for praise
@@downaquarist2781 true but they did tall about the voxels issue

If y'all do another HBO watch, their war miniseries (band of brothers, the Pacific, generation kill) are all fantastic examples of invisible/settings VFX
THIS is what advertising is nowadays... got me interested in Lovecraft Country... gotta check that out now...
So they actually yanked that horses head around like that?...
Right? That can't feel very nice for the horse. My neck hurts knowing that.
@@macs2448 that's horrible if they really did that... especially knowing they could have easily done that in post production considering the entire scene was fake...
Nikos intelligence in each episode never ceases to amaze me.
Suggestion: David Fincher's Zodiac. There's so many VFX shots that are seamless. You've already covered the CG blood spatter but there's so many more that are just clever film making. Goes across many of his films
When will we get a rundown on Kung Fu Panda bridge fight against Tai Lung for both animation and stunts
I could watch endless videos talking about HBO Chernobyl, it made such an impact on so many aspects
There's an 80's movie called The Stuff. It's amazing with some old school amazing effects.
Jon should have been yelling 'serpentine' the whole time Rickon was getting shot at.
You should react to the fights in Cobra Kai. They are surprisingly good, specially when compared to the 80s movie
Niiice! I really enjoy when y’all bring Alex on!
Have you guys reacted to the effects in the Planet Of The Apes reboot movies?
I think you should, especially the effects in the third one are spectacular!
React to Starship Troopers!! I think the bug CGI still looks good now.
Because the animator who did the starship trooper is the same guy behind the Jurassic park
@@Dondingdingding Phil Tippet. I know. I always wanted this channel to react to ST, maybe even include him in the video.
Chernobyl is the most realistic chilling series I have ever seen. VFX enhanced it to another level.
Hell yes to the return of Alex!
Would be amazing for the Audio peeps in the industry to do an "SFX Artists React" episode or series!
Why is Clint still in the end card, but not Peter, Jordan or Nat?
They probably just haven’t gotten around to shooting a new photo for everyone
It looks like those photos were from the photo shoot they did a few years ago. Maybe they haven't had time to organize a more recent on. Jordan and Nat came on last year iirc
They haven't completed the blood ritual yet
