@@parkercrossland410 the effects would kill, but I'd give Villeneuve a Tron film. I think there's a chance of it turning out too "Blade Runner"y, but I think he'd be the right fit for the film
The original Tron was the movie that made me jump careers and get into the burgeoning computer industry back in the 1980's. So you could say it changed my life like no other.
Tron Legacy and Daft Punk are such a strong part of my childhood and everytime I watch Legacy and the OG I feel like a kid again full of hope and imagination of what the future of technology has to offer!
The Tron 2.0 game was such an underrated gem that helped push the story along before Legacy came around. I wish that would get a remaster of some kind.
Tron 2.0 was indeed very impressive for the time. Monolith really nailed the look and the atmosphere of the World of Tron. It's interesting how many of the plot points from that game made it into Tron Legacy, albeit in some cases in a somewhat subtle way.
The GBA game? A remake for 3D consoles would be great, KH2 showed me Tron for the first time. I know there's a PSP game I've yet to play without it crashing, and I haven't found the one for PS3 in the wild because I don't want to just get it off eBay.
I was a little kid when Tron was released. It was the most exciting thing. Looking back I still struggle with the idea that it didn't do well. A lot of things have changed, culturally, since then, but it still doesn't make sense to me that more people weren't as crazy about it as I was.

I actually love that Briggs' digital remake as Clu falls in the uncanny valley because it makes him feel artificial faking humanity. You mentioned it briefly. I think it intentionally or unintentionally fits sooo well. If anything, it has made it age better in the times I've rewatched it.
I can tell very few people actually liked Tron Legacy when it dropped. Everyone bragged on the De-aging of Jeff Bridges at the time. Even the critics that blasted the film commented on how they thought Bridges had undergone Botox or plastic surgery.
PLEASE MATT make a video on Tron Uprising, that show was literally the gateway into animation for me and it's so underrated. This was an amazing video as always!!
The MOST UNDERRATED FILM OF ALL TIME=Tron Legacy 💙 Soundtrack by Daft Punk, Astonishing Visuals, Great Production Desing , Direction by Joseph Kosinsky✨
I am currently in collage studying art, and I legit wouldn’t be here if not for Tron Legacy. I was watching the behind the scenes, and they showed some of the character designs that they were using and I suddenly realized “I. I could draw for a living??”” And here I am, more then 6 years later. This movie is truly an inspiration to so many, especially me!
This movie was such a disappointment. Saw it in the theater with my then young son. I was so excited for him to experience the world of Tron and I was excited to see what they did with it. It turned out to be a droll slog of a film. A HUGE missed opportunity. 😢 All style and no coherent substance. Matt’s videos are cool tho, I can (and do) watch these all day, any time. 🎉
Tron is the Disney franchise that continues to re-emerge to the general audience. From the original film, to Kingdom Hearts 2, to Tron Legacy and Daft Punk’s soundtrack, Tron Uprising, KH3D and Shanghai Disneyland. For a black sheep, Tron has an enduring legacy that people do know
I watched Tron for the first time about half a year ago and I really dug it. It was dated, but there was this sense of nostalgia (even though I had never seen it). Almost directly after that I rewatched Legacy for the first time since seeing it in theatres as a little lad. I really enjoyed Legacy, and was sad to see the franchise so dormant since.
What did you work on? Everything was so gorgeous and despite the underrated aspect i like the tv kiosks will still have the light cycle materialization scene
@@TheGridGam3r I was an animator, I did the shot of Clu rezing up his lightcycle, his carrier arriving, some Light Jets, any a bunch of scattered shots.
Tron was an absolutely brilliant move that was far more than the sum of its parts. I truly love this film and it's been a stable of my comfort watching playlist ever since I first saw it.
Tron Legacy is possibly my favorite movie of all time. I just spent countless hours with it recently when I used it for tuning my new Atmos system in my home theater. I never get tired of it. The scenes are so creatively shot, and the soundtrack fits every minute of this movie as perfectly as could be. And lastly, my on screen crush of Chora can’t be understated. This is truly movie magic that more than likely will never be replicated, even with future installments, but you never know, they could surprise us with another treat.
Both Trons are GOAT Disney live-action for me. Maybe I’m a psychedelia junkie. I would probably love Black Hole. I’ve only ever watched movies sober but the Trons and even show burns like Star Trek: The Motion Picture I find simply transcendent.
It’s crazy how how people are finally embracing what the 2010’s were. Movies like Avatar and Tron are finally getting the praise and recognition that they deserve!
Something interesting about Tron: Legacy was how Kosinski made camera moves that you can't really get in real life. I mean, you can get them, but they were deliberately mathematical and it's odd to see a camera stop on a dime. Or a crane that turns upside down. It's a stylistic choice that I think worked well for the movie. If you see Oblivion or Top Gun, he stuck to normal physics for camera movement.
I saw Tron Legacy as a kid and it’s never really left me. It’s just so cool looking that it fits in a similar place as Avatar (2009) for me. Movies people tend to dismiss, but are absolute visual brainrot for me. I had Legacy on dvd and at least once a year I’d get such an urge to watch it just to experience the grid, I didn’t have as easy access to Avatar and it’s length discouraged rewatches bc of my patience when I was little. I’m so glad Tron like Avatar is getting more content bc I just love the worlds in these movies
I remember watching the original Tron as a kid in good old Disney Channel. Loved it. Truly revolutionary and totally undervalued film. Tron: Legacy was amazing too. Definitely a franchise that deserves to continue. I still hope we see a third Tron someday. We need this kind of "black sheep" movies, now more than ever.
I’ve recently seen another Tron Legacy retrospective that showed Jeff Bridges playing his younger self, wearing some kind of helmet with lots of dots on his face - like when they do cartoon/Marvel/LOtR characters with the actual actor’s mannerisms - so apparently it wasn’t a stand-in. Still remember being freaked out when I saw it at the cinema. Thanks for the vid!
Classic Tron 1982, helped me to choose and shape my actual career, when I saw that movie I was 11 and it impacted me, it has been my favourite IP since then. Legacy enhanced this love for this franchandise a lot more, it is a shame it hasn't been properly recognised... 1982 film was ahead of its time, I'll always be a fan of TRON world.
“No one in their right mind would make a movie like this again” I know. But I wish they would. This film looks better to me than anything else, ever. I love every frame. Legacy doesn’t even come close.
I will forever scream from the rooftops that Tron Legacy is CRIMINALLY underrated. Such a good fucking movie. I get tears evwrytime Flynn says bye to Sam and their life together started to flash on the screen while the fucking absolutely EPIC musical score played.
Please Matt, please do a video on Tron: Uprising. I grew up with the film, and would watch the Uprising series late at night on Disney XD. Hearing you talk about these awesome stories with such in-depth analysis and passion for the subject matter brings a lot of joy to me, so thank you!
I'm so happy to see my favorite movie still being talked about these days. Tron is one of those franchises that always delivers but never seems to get a win. Hopefully that will change one day.
Tron: Legacy is my biggest inspiration for studying animation and game design in college. The fact that this movie came out when I was a kid and was inspired by it was nothing more than perfect timing for me. As we move into a Hollywood filled with Marvel films made by abused VFX artists, I still look back to this film as a glimpse to how VFX should be whether it’s for movies or even games. Also as a musician I also LOVED the soundtrack. I hope Daft Punk can come back for the third movie, since they broke up last year
What I find is that most videos about TRON don't discuss why it was called TRON. For those who know the history of computers (ref: IBM), there was a command that allowed you to trace how a program progressed as it was being executed - Trace On, abbreviated as the command TRON (and yes, there was a Trace Off - TROFF). So, TRON was the program that was tracing how the Master Control Program was running with an eye of finding a way the program could be interrupted.
I remember my brain kinda melting when I first saw the teaser for Legacy on (I think) New Years' 2010. I was a teenager, but I had absolutely no experience with the property before, not even the light cycle game. So, we rented a DVD from the library, I laughed at some of the outdated effects, and then it became a special interest that became my whole life. Seeing the first real trailer in 3D in theaters really solidified it for me. I think I cheered aloud in that crowded room when I saw the updated Recognizer design for the first time. Every new thing I learned about it just flooded my veins with dopamine, and I couldn't get enough of it. I'm still disappointed that it lost the box office to Frikkin' Yogi Bear.
I was exactly the right age for the original TRON. I remember really enjoying it and playing the heck out of the arcade game. Watching it today is ... difficult.
I have never actually seen any footage at all of the original tron but have played through Kingdom Hearts 2's tron level many times. Always been one of my favorite game levels aesthetically in any game. Feel like it did a really good job of capturing the look.
Tron 2 was what got me into techno-music and sci-fi as a kid. Star wars was a favorite of mine but seeing Tron as a kid made me want to see more of what technology and other worldly settings can bring.
Say what you will about Tron, but with how they innovated CGI in the 80s, and how they innovated CGI faces/legacy sequels before it became popular, the Tron movies do a lot of innovating
This came out my birthday weekend in 2010 I what a great movie. The original wasn't ever my favorite movie but this one always holds a place in my heart
I was born in 82, and while I don't remember the first time I saw Tron. I've loved the movie and the idea of Tron, for as long as I can remember. I was so hyped when Legacy came out and blown away by (almost) all of the visual effects.
Can I just say that the opening when the music started I knew exacly what to say and you perfectly hitting the cue as well gave me shivers ! I only watched 3 seconds and HHHHH
Thank you thank you so much for making this video. I am now 54 years old I was 14 the year Tron was released. I can tell you I walked out of that movie theater and my head was spinning. As someone who is a massive Star Trek fan and loved Star Wars. I was hoping Tron might have the same future as those franchises. I kept thinking any year now will get a new Tron movie not. An In 2010 as 42-year-old grandfather we finally got a new Tron movie. Once again my mind was blown, I love the effects the acting. I know the deaging they used on Jeff Bridges doesn't look great, but it was in its infancy at that time. I am thrilled that you said they've announced a 3rd movie because I know I am not the only one out there that love Tron. I've been a lot of conventions and you will always spot a few Tron cosplayers. Anyway, thank you so much for this video
This is one of my most favorite movies. I don't have "the one best movie" like many of my friends but if I had to name a movie, Tron Legacy is always the first that comes to my mind.
I have a genuinely unsettling obsession with Tron Legacy (Tron as a whole but Legacy specifically). When I saw it as a kid it was a really cool action movie. As an adult, there are so many really compelling themes, the art direction is perfect, and not to mention the soundtrack. The whole series really never got the treatment it deserves. I'm happy that it was never dumbed down though, they always kept those intelligent themes in the background, even knowing the franchise wasn't pulling in new fans.
One of my favorite little Tron inclusions is how the original is featured in Kingdom Hearts 2, and then suddenly and randomly included in Kingdom Hearts DDD
I was born in '86. And grew up watching Tron ('82), Captain N: The Game Master ('89), and ReBoot ('94). Because of this, I was obsessed with the idea of living programs inside if computers/games. I wrote so many stories as a kid on the subject. It's still one of my favorite topics. I love Legacy and Uprising, but the original will always be my favorite.
I WILL NEVER forget going to DISNEYLAND with my nephew and mom and dancing the night away and playing aracade games at the Flynn's arcade during the TRON rave event!!
This movie was so incredibly slept on. I’d love to see James Cameron get his hands on this IP along with bringing in some of the old production staff for advising.
This was so great to watch. I must have watched Tron Legacy twice in the theaters back in 2010. My then 6 year old nephew made me bring him with him both times. I was beyond heartbroken when the sequel was cancelled. I still don't know how I feel about Jared being in the driver's seat for this film. In fact, I'm very worried.
I bought the soundtrack on the same day I watched it in IMax. I was working at a movie theater when the movie came out. There was people complaining about they could hear Tron while watching True Grit.
I was so into Tron Legacy when it came out. My grandpa has always been a big computer nerd and he loved the original and told me when a sequel was being made. I followed the production of the movie ahead of time, saw it in theaters.. maybe a few times? It hit SO many things for me. Loved and still do love the Daft Punk score, it makes me dance and cry at the same time. The world is so sleek and beautiful and slightly rugged and with that subtle glow everywhere, it captivated me. The story itself I always heard complaints about but it resonated with me, and I think especially having Jeff Bridges there lends such a gravity to his role. You feel the passage of time, the years Kevin spent trapped in the Grid. I love that. I also loved hearing the original Tron's director talk about how much that story is a spiritual allegory for him, it represents the hero's journey and the identity rings were inspired by mandalas.. I felt like that same energy and symbolism and reverence carried through in Legacy which I also liked, and I think the original director would appreciate that. I absolutely agree Clu's animation is the largest failing of the movie, and it's probably the main reason I don't revisit it as often as I used to. I have seen these movie a lot, and I still really love it. Thank you for talking about it. 😊
Speaking of Sci-Fi: Isn't that Stellaris music in the background? Also: I will NEVER forget the moment I first saw the trailer in a cinema with a friend, because I had no clue they made the movie. I'm like: NOOOOO WAY! What movie are we watching today? Get me outa here I need to watch that movie RIGHT NOW.
Fantastic video as always Matt. Would love to see a video with your take on Tomorrowland and some of Disney's other "failures" in the sci-fi realm. Always felt that good or bad, Disney's attempts at that genre were always very unique.
I'm glad tron 3 is moving forward, but I'm also sad because Daft Punk is no longer making music. My love for EDM and science fiction stems from this movie. I'm terrified to see them fuck it up but I'm also thrilled to see another movie. Hopefully, they can hire more edm producers to make the soundtrack if they can't get daft punk to come back one last time.
Those quotes by Lisberger were the reason why _Tron_ was made and Disney took a huge leap of faith in making it. Back in the late 70s-early 80s, video games were *everything* to kids. I was there. I spent many an hour staring at my TV and playing my Atari 2600. Movie and TV people were scared to death these new-fangled computers were going to erase their industry. _Tron_ was Disney’s attempt to survive by the old saying, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” It’s ironic that a movie about the inner life of computers relied so heavily on human hands touching each frame.
I saw this in the theater when I was 8 years old, and this movie blew me away. I had all the toys (the ziptie powered lightcycles were awesome). Loved the arcade games. I wish my kids liked it a much as I did, but I can see why they don't. it's definitely slow and dated by today's standards, but it's still got a solid place in my heart and head.
I can't help but to think it's an underrated movie on all grounds. Maybe except classic no-risk scenario which no one would have challenged it for anyway. Music is a masterclass, visuals are unequalled at the time and i still find myself coming back to Tron Legacy every years.

Avatar (2009) was great too
@@scottalynch As much as people hype Avatar’s 3D, it really took away from the film in my experience.
@@Eidlones I could see both of those doing well.
Jackass 3D was one of the best 3D films I’ve ever experienced. Believe it or not.
The original Tron was the movie that made me jump careers and get into the burgeoning computer industry back in the 1980's. So you could say it changed my life like no other.
TRON is one of the most important films ever made, watching it is like watching a piece of history.
I had the game for the 2016 movie tie in and it was the first and only game I managed to get 100% achievements and completion on.
I wanted a Tron MMORPG back in 2013, 2014. Instead we got Disney made Star Wars films 💩
The GBA game? A remake for 3D consoles would be great, KH2 showed me Tron for the first time.
I know there's a PSP game I've yet to play without it crashing, and I haven't found the one for PS3 in the wild because I don't want to just get it off eBay.
I love the Tron films & I think it's one of the most underrated franchises out there. I wouldn't mind more Tron movies at all or another series.
I’d rather it be left alone. Anything Disney touches turns to 💩
I was a little kid when Tron was released. It was the most exciting thing. Looking back I still struggle with the idea that it didn't do well. A lot of things have changed, culturally, since then, but it still doesn't make sense to me that more people weren't as crazy about it as I was.
I have the same opinion and similar experience.
Hearing that Disney World was making a Tron Rollercoaster gives me so much hope for the franchise.
Yeah it caught a lot of traction in Asia specifically China and now I'm glad it's gaining popularity here in the states as well
Tron 3 is back.🔥
Directors: Joseph Kosinski and Joachim Rønning
Screenwriters: Joseph Kosinski and Jesse Wigutow
Filming start in august of this year in Vancouver, Canada. 🇨🇦❤
Wait til you hear Tron 3 is oficially in development, also, Lightcycle Run opened in Orlando and Identity came out for Steam and Switch as well
Its lame. Disney can do better.
The MOST UNDERRATED FILM OF ALL TIME=Tron Legacy 💙
Soundtrack by Daft Punk, Astonishing Visuals, Great Production Desing , Direction by Joseph Kosinsky✨
I am currently in collage studying art, and I legit wouldn’t be here if not for Tron Legacy.
I was watching the behind the scenes, and they showed some of the character designs that they were using and I suddenly realized “I. I could draw for a living??””
And here I am, more then 6 years later.
This movie is truly an inspiration to so many, especially me!
TRON: Legacy - Best movie ever or best movie EVER???
Tron legacy was such a great movie
Tron Legacy sucked
This movie was such a disappointment. Saw it in the theater with my then young son. I was so excited for him to experience the world of Tron and I was excited to see what they did with it. It turned out to be a droll slog of a film. A HUGE missed opportunity. 😢 All style and no coherent substance. Matt’s videos are cool tho, I can (and do) watch these all day, any time. 🎉
The original Tron was better.
Yeah I loved the movie and keep coming back to It.
Tron is the Disney franchise that continues to re-emerge to the general audience. From the original film, to Kingdom Hearts 2, to Tron Legacy and Daft Punk’s soundtrack, Tron Uprising, KH3D and Shanghai Disneyland.
For a black sheep, Tron has an enduring legacy that people do know
TRON 1 & 2 are two of the most perfect and achingly beautiful complete works of movie art ever made.
as a kid i literally didnt even notice anything off with the de-aging in legacy. it looks quite serviceable, and feels really ahead of its time
I watched Tron for the first time about half a year ago and I really dug it. It was dated, but there was this sense of nostalgia (even though I had never seen it). Almost directly after that I rewatched Legacy for the first time since seeing it in theatres as a little lad. I really enjoyed Legacy, and was sad to see the franchise so dormant since.
I was lucky enough to be an Animator on Tron: Legacy and become friends with some of the original films creatives.
why did you make it look like garbage this stupid sequel.
@@alexeyl22are you blind or just tasteless? lol
@@alexeyl22 Talk to the Director and Production Designer
Chora? Lmfao You mean you can fine tune your home theater system but can’t spell Quorra? 😂
@@Spooky_515Not everybody uses the subtitles, if you've never heard the name of the website how are you supposed to know?
This video is such a back-handed compliment. Tron is a great movie.
Woah, a video essay on a relatively unimportant topic that isn't 4 hours long. How refreshing, thanks for keeping it concise.
Both Trons are GOAT Disney live-action for me. Maybe I’m a psychedelia junkie. I would probably love Black Hole. I’ve only ever watched movies sober but the Trons and even show burns like Star Trek: The Motion Picture I find simply transcendent.
Man, Tron: Evolution was such a cool game. Prince of Persia in The Grid, what more could ya want?
The end was sad.
Man when Prince of Persia came out as well…..good times😮💨
Tron: Legacy is literally the movie that shaped my music taste and favorite aesthetics. That movie shaped my life.
It’s crazy how how people are finally embracing what the 2010’s were. Movies like Avatar and Tron are finally getting the praise and recognition that they deserve!
Tron Legacy is one of my favorite films, it captured my imagination growing up. It's honestly sad it took Disney this long to make a sequel.
Nice analysis of TRON, and it's always important to talk about the music of both films -- stylistic standouts even today.
Legacy is a masterpiece on almost every level and it's wonderful to see it getting love again.
When Jarred Leto turned to the camera and said "It's Tronning Time" everyone cheered and clapped! I will never forget that moment.
…let’s see Paul Allen’s program
“No one in their right mind would make a movie like this again”
I know.
Its a good *looking* movie...the story is kinda limp in my opinion tho.
I saw Tron as a little kid on VHS and thought it was the most amazing thing ever.
Please Matt, please do a video on Tron: Uprising. I grew up with the film, and would watch the Uprising series late at night on Disney XD. Hearing you talk about these awesome stories with such in-depth analysis and passion for the subject matter brings a lot of joy to me, so thank you!
A tron video? A matt draper tron video?? Im so hyped to watch through this
I'm so happy to see my favorite movie still being talked about these days. Tron is one of those franchises that always delivers but never seems to get a win. Hopefully that will change one day.
"Tron features sights that no eye, no camera has ever before beheld".
Time Magazine, 1982
Oh Tron. Such a beautiful, underutilized franchise. I’m glad Disney is finally giving it some attention again.
I hope Daft Punk can come back for the third movie, since they broke up last year
"legacy" is garbage.
Putting The Midnight at the end of this video was an insane power move. Them + Tron is definitely a vibe!
Very cool to catch up on some Tron news, and I liked this retrospective. Good video - Thanks.
Tron legacy is one of my favorite movies and I'm happy to hear that tron 3 has been great lived
Yeah no one cares lol
@@Spooky_515Just because you don't...!
Oh wow, so technically there's a Hyde to Tron, Troff?
Legacy is one of my favorite films of all time. We need a 4K transfer.
I was exactly the right age for the original TRON. I remember really enjoying it and playing the heck out of the arcade game. Watching it today is ... difficult.
All these years later, I can still recall the first time I saw a movie trailer for it in a cinema. I kept thinking about it for days.
I just want to point out that actual Cindy Morgan just shared this on her social media. Because it's a great video!
These are two of my favorite movies of all time! I desperately want to see another one.
Tron Legacy was amazing. The sound, the visuals, the story...
Tron was experimental and Tron Legacy is the pinnacle of the aesthetics.
Shout out for playing music by TimeCop1983 and The Midnight. I noticed the america online and vampires at the first chord. Great video!
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME? JUST WATCHED THIS BRILLIANT FILM FOR THE FIRST TIME AND YOU UPLOAD A VIDEO ABOUT RECENTLY?! VERY Cool Dude!
I WILL NEVER forget going to DISNEYLAND with my nephew and mom and dancing the night away and playing aracade games at the Flynn's arcade during the TRON rave event!!
great video. I just watched the full making of Tron and feel this is a perfect condensed video of everything in the full documentary
You forgot "the game has changed". I love that track!
Tron legacy: Best sound track to run too. Great video !
This movie was so incredibly slept on. I’d love to see James Cameron get his hands on this IP along with bringing in some of the old production staff for advising.
Great video, totally agree tron is amazing. Also, great choice on using the midnight for some of the background music.
Computers ,did change everyday people's lives, some thirty years later ❤ thanks for these memories ❤
Best Movie Ever! Great review of the series. Tron Legacy is one of my favorite movies too! This was a perfect run through Tron history.
I bought the soundtrack on the same day I watched it in IMax.
I was working at a movie theater when the movie came out.
There was people complaining about they could hear Tron while watching True Grit.
15:36 I absolutely agree. It's one of my favourite movies aswell, might even be my favourite sci-fi movie.
Amazing video! Can't wait for part 3! Fight for the users!
Tron Legacy has one of the best soundtracks ever. It’s still in rotation.
_Tron_ was Disney’s attempt to survive by the old saying, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”
It’s ironic that a movie about the inner life of computers relied so heavily on human hands touching each frame.
Always upvote just for using The Midnight
Great video and Vampires at the end was epic!
