    I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: half the people who saw this film hated it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video. The other half loved it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video.

    • @taqresu5865

      I loved it (and the original) because of the worldbuilding. The music is an amazing addition (my introduction to Daft Punk) but the Grid is just so intriguing. It's a virtual world, but not like the Matrix, which is designed to be a simulation. Daft Punk's soundtrack is the musical compliment to the visuals.

    Tron Legacy in my opinion is such an underrated gem that had massive potential for a franchise and its a shame we lost it in favor of lackluster live action remakes and crappy Star Wars projects, ironically enough Tron Legacy box office would be seen as a success nowadays compared to the massive box office flops Disney puts out.

    I felt that Tron Legacy came a few years too early for the cultural 80s nostalgia wave that really became clear with Stranger Things and peaked with Ready Player One and left with Thor Ragnarok and Wonder Woman 1984
    Tron Ares is going to come too late as we've moved on to 90s nostalgia

    • @sprinkle61
      @sprinkle61 6 месяцев назад +5

      They have so many franchises that its hard to pick the most poorly used one. But its not just Disney, no one can figure out how to make Tron great again. In a way, it suffers from the Matrix curse. HOW do you make the digital world cool and interesting, once you escape the gladiatorial video games, and no longer have a reason to be there at all ? Interestingly, both the Matrix Reloaded and Tron Legacy decided on the same answer, they needed to meet a guy in a bar, get into a fight with them, and then have an exciting chase scene :O I'm also not a fan of 'the girl that is the key to everything' as a trope, and they certainly couldn't find a way to make it compelling, just dropping her off in the Real World as a insta-love interest was not a great ending, and made no sense in universe.

    • @bbro43
      @bbro43 6 месяцев назад +3

      @TheChancellor212 The worst part is. In the final 15 minutes of Uprising, the bad guys are repurposing Tron into Rinsler. All they had to do was change 15 minutes to let it happen and then have Rinsler de-rez the main character, Beck.

    • @Grizabeebles
      @Grizabeebles 3 месяца назад +1

      Personally, I suspect Beck was really a back-up of CLU the whole time. I've heard that in early drafts of the script Beck was originally named "Beta".
      I always puctured CLU pulling the same trick Flynn did in Tron: Legacy and reintegrating Beck into himself during the "final confrontation". That way, he'd be able to obtain Tron's disk and destroy the resistence in one move.
      And it would have made for an even worse gut-punch ending to season 2 or season 3 than simply repurposing Tron at the end of Season 1.

  • @TF2Fan101
    @TF2Fan101 6 месяцев назад +100

    The TRON franchise, for me, is… frustrating.
    That’s not because it’s bad. Frankly, the entire concept is *insanely* creative, and has a *lot* of potential for amazing stories and characters.
    And that’s the problem: Disney’s not DOING anything with it! Sure, there was Uprising, which was amazing and probably one of the best cartoons I’ve ever seen, but it was cancelled after one season! And it was left on a major cliffhanger! And even more frustratingly, it was revealed that there was an Uprising movie in development that would have featured Quorra in some capacity!
    It’s just frustrating that Disney keeps killing off shows and then doing nothing with the IPs even though the creators would probably love the chance to continue their stories.

At least the Tron threequel has a release date! If that wasn’t enough, there’s the Darkwing Duck reboot, every Star Wars movie in the works, a Pirates movies in the works, the live action African princess movie, Sade, which I'm convinced they turned it into the live action Little Mermaid movie🤣
    Edit: Warner Bros in general is the bane of MY existence. They’ve made the most baffling decisions I’ve ever seen a studio make. Even before Victor Zsasz or whatever his name is took over. If you watch it now, it still holds up nicely after 15 years. That says something right there.

    My man(!) Clu is not "de-aged"! He is a total CG construct. De aging is when they film Robert Downey Jr and air brush his wrinkles. Clu is like the planet of the apes movies, golem or Hulk and Thanos. It's a new construct not digital air brushing what is already there.

    • @amirmohamad2270
      @amirmohamad2270 6 месяцев назад +34

      Can't agree. I think his point is that when movies try to sell us younger versions of an actor with the help of technology, it never works.
      So it doesn't matter what technology they are using and whether they are just doing a bit of smoothing or creating a whole new actor out of lines of codes, the movies simply cannot convince us that these are in fact those actual characters when they were younger.
      Therefore you can't compare Clu with Thanos because Thanos is not supposed to be a younger Josh Brolin. He's a fantasy creature. Our minds accepts Thanos because he's not supposed to be real, but our minds do not accept what happens in Tron, Irishman, Indiana Jones etc because in those movies we are asked to take those younger versions as actual real entities even though they are clearly not. I would argue even a human character made out of thin air is more believable than an old actor made to look young. Because at least in the former we don't have a reference. We don't have to connect that person to an actual actor.

    Holy crap this movie aged so freaking well. The cinematography beyond the CGI was so damn good that even mid CGI (which, let me be clear, was way better than mid in this movie) would let this movie age well visually. I thought the story may have been basic, but it was very simple and clean, and just made it quite entertaining, probably a 8/10 for me personally, which is probably brought up by a lot of nostalgia bias. I'd personally 100% recommend to anyone who's curious about it.

    For future reference the generally used calculation for break even is 2.5x. And that's generally the lower end figure, most big budget movies are almost always going to be higher, sometimes considerably.
    For example if you look at Top Gun Maverick. There's an article on deadline breaking down the actual numbers.
    $177m production budget, $180m advertising budget and cinemas took 53% of the box office gross. So the true budget was $357m and they needed a box office gross of $674m just to break even on that.
    That's a 3.8x multiplier on the production budget.
    And that number doesn't include interest on the loans they take out to get this stuff made and talent partiticpations. The true number is probably in the 4-5x range, just to break even.
    So yeah. I doubt Tron Legacy made money, even after post-box-office revenue streams.

They then take a page from Matrix Reloaded and decided they needed to meet a guy in a bar, get into a fight with him and his minions, and then have an exciting chase scene. I'm also not a fan of 'The girl that is the key to everything' as a trope, and they certainly couldn't find a way to make it compelling, just dropping her off in the Real World as an insta-love interest was not a great ending, and made no sense in universe, I mean, she is a type of PROGRAM, so where does her real life body even come from ?

    The problem with Tron Legacy is the same issue that Paramount always had with Star Trek - they didn't get the audience. The original Tron wasn't a huge success, it is more known for the cgi than anything else so it was unlikely that a sequel done 25 years later was going to be a huge success. But there was an audience for it and with a controlled budget, you could have a successful film and they did. If they had proper expectations then things would have been fine and they would have done a sequel but Disney wanted a massive hit and when they didn't get it, they considered it a failure. Yeah the film was just okay but what's wrong with that? It was entertaining and looked good, that's better than a lot of films these days. It could have been rhe steady franchise that kept making Disney money like Trek was in the 80s but Disney wanted big so they did Marvel and Star Wars and were successful for a while but that has run out and they need a hit - I don't think the new Tron will be it.

    I do personally love Tron Legacy but I admit it's largely due to the visuals. It's a stunning world with really cool action, but the characters need just a little more depth. The final sacrifice was a pretty good ending followed by the drive into the sunset.
    I think one of my problems with the movie is it has one of those setups that could've been a movie on its own. The heist into the company and the parachuting off the roof is such a cool intro to Sam's character, but then nothing about the company or his shenanigans really matters because then he's in the grid for the rest of movie. I always forget the movie starts that way because I immediately forget again once he's in the grid.

    There’s also the Tron Betrayal graphic novel that acts a prequel to Legacy. From context in that my theory is rather than create a digital copy of himself to watch over the Grid and make the perfect system, Kevin Flynn siphoned off aspects of his personality into a copy of himself, like Kirk in the Star Trek episode The Enemy Within. Efficiency, any sense of responsibility went to CLU but not the wonder or self-awareness to develop beyond an idea. CLU isn’t an AI gone rogue, he’s doing what he was programmed to, it’s just that his programming never had a protocol for imagination or change since Flynn hadn’t developed as a person to realise this was important. That’s why the merge at the end is fatal, they’re the same person but two aspects who have evolved too far to be reconciled.
    Marvel also did variant covers for some of their comic issues with the characters with Grid based appearances.

    Simple rewrite: Make Sam 13 or 14 instead of twenty-something, and damn the timeline. Heck, make this a period piece! Let it take place in the early 90s. That way, you can build up Sam's anger towards Flynn for being absent all this time. You can play off of Sam and Quorra's ages, because she's mentally older but literally only 2 years old, whereas Sam is 13 or 14, but he actually has all that experience. This could also make Sam react with more awe and wonder to the Grid, as opposed to the current "edgy and confused" look that Garrett has throughout the movie. Plus, when the younger Sam is in peril, we're more worried because he's a kid, we don't want anything bad to happen to him. Have Sam be a wunderkind with computers. That's how he hacks Encom at the start and that's why he's so awed by the Grid. And by the end, he's grown enough to realize why his dad did what he did and he now has a new older sister. I think a Timmy Chalamét would have worked, and as much as I love Olivia Wilde, maybe someone younger would fit the rewrite. Someone that can play 18-19, like barely into adulthood.

    • @taqresu5865
      @taqresu5865 6 месяцев назад +2

      I love how each film's context fits their iterations of the Grid. In the 80s, the Grid was Encom's servers. Computer programming back then was rudimentary compared to current tech (though it was fascinating how Dillinger had a touchscreen desk). The MCP is the top program running things in Encom. A lot of elements were borrowed from Flynn's arcade games, and the Grid developed a culture surrounding them, indicative of how Dillinger stole credit for them. And programs view Users in a religious way, since they are literally our creations.
      In Legacy, the Grid is Flynn's unrestricted vision at work. With newfound understanding, and possessing a genius level intellect and Encom's resources, Flynn made a private server for his Grid. So both stories had in-universe justifications for their respective visual directions.

    One of the best rides I have ever been on in my life was the Tron ride in Disneyland Shanghai. It was amazing thematically, but it was also amazing as a ride itself. Take away the environment and it would still be amazing, but the environment makes it perfect. It has been at least 6 years since I rode it and I still remember it vividly. My family went on it at least 4 times, I think 3 times in a row, so probably more than 4 times total. There are only 2 rides that I've enjoyed that much since, which is Rise of the Reistance (Disneyland and Disneyworld) and the Guardians of the Galaxy rollercoaster (Disneyworld). They are amazing for different reasons, but truly, the Tron ride was, in my opinion, the best ride I have been on. I can totally see a large fan base come up from the ride, especially since it is now in the states. I would love to see a sequel (minus Jared Letto, didn't know about his background until watching this series of videos).
    Side note: if you ever get the chance to go to Disneyland Shanghai, absolutely do it. The park is newer, so there are fewer rides. But, the rides are all high quality, well made, and well designed. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride was absolutely insane, it was so realisitic, I could convince myself I was in the movie universe. The animatronics of the characters was so fluid and smooth, I thought for a second I was watching Davy Jones animated or as a person in a costume. I didn't even register that the ride was in Chinese until I went on it for the 3rd time.
