Love this idea! i have a 1st gen iPad pro 12.9in which is forever stuck in a boot loop but the screen is perfectly good, i would love to make this into a monitor, would the process be the same?
Hi there! while I'm not after an Ipad for it's screen, I'll leave this bit of info: the smaller board may be disconnected off the assembly because, I believe, it's a backlight, hight voltage power supply, which won't be needed in this case.
I think you are right that it's a high voltage board for the backlight, but don't most screens need a backlight to be able to see what's on the screen? Or are you suggesting to remove the back of the screen and use ambient light instead? (this is sometimes possible)
@Incommensurabilities , the high voltage backlight is suited for monitors and mostly old laptop displays. Old tablets feature backlight as well but it's led based (instead of the ccfl lamps that required the high voltage modules). Have you tried without the module?
Great idea, so many of these devices just don't keep the OS up to date. Be cool to make a 3D printed 1084 commodore monitor to hold the LCD and internals with power supply
Really wish there was a control board for the new gen iPad pros , been looking for a 2k res 11 inch 120hz touch screen monitor for a project for awhile. The added benefit of the ipad screen being oled.
This is really sweet, I was afraid about the cost of the board before you mentioned it (well, I suppose I could have read the description before) as it means everything about this kind of project being worth it or not, but given the total cost I think I'll do this at some point. I do have an iPad 2 with part of the touch digitizer unresponsive, which makes the device nearly useless, and thought that might be repairable, being an old, obsolete model I don't think it's worth putting any money or effort into it, and guess it will serve me better as a little monitor instead. Nice!
This is what i really want to do my ipad. Maybe in the future i would do this. But as for now i'm looking for an alternative to make my ipad as second screen without detaching the screen.
There is non for the old iPads. You can use new iPads as second screen on the mac via software, but the only way to do it machines older than 4 years is to open them up.
I've got an ipad air 1 (a1475), but cant find the model of the display without opening.. Can you find/tell the display model number? Thank you in advance!

Have you ever done a MacBook Pro screen? I have a dead old one and considering doing the same. But I’m concerned that, when I look at the connector (flex cable), there may not be an available controller card for it.
I never though of repurpose the screens from old ipads, guess i need to see what lcd is in my ipad air 1 :D i was also in the market for an portable screen.
It would be nice to turn this into a display for RC drones or vehicles that are being used for analog FPV (First Person View). It would be a LOT better, for some, than having to wear goggles.
I'd like to see this for the iPhone screens. They are better for some smaller projects. Too bad Apple didn't include a simple HDMI port on the iPhone/iPad.
Can this work on Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1" panel too? I have old raspberry pi and that would be perfect size screen for "mini arcane game cabinet"- project. :D
Is it possible to use the old casing (once the original iPad innards are removed and only the screen and new board are left) for this? My guess is not really since the new ports are too big for it.
Many years ago, Adafruit came out with the Qualia board which could drive iPad Air displays and worked beautifully, but it was pricey and had only DisplayPort in. But $50 for a replacement gorgeous Retina screen was just too good. Then $22 HDMI/VGA controller boards some time later when iPad Air screens were $25ish on eBay, so I bought a few dozen for projects. Cool that more models are available. Would love to get a 12.9” Pro screen. Even the 1st gen has near Retina color saturation.
That's pretty interesting as a DIY project but unfortunately under the current economical conditions makes no sense whatsoever. I have to admit I like it though but I would never recommend anything like this as a practical exercise. Spending extra money on those display drivers along with getting a non-standard resolution 10 inch display without a case is simply nothing more than a hobby project.
Actually, when I plugged everything in it did work! I thought one of the boards was an IR receiver like in the video; it was actually the backlight driver! A little strange it needs a whole separate board to work, and it also doesn't directly connect to the panel, but if it works it works!
I found some sellers that sell controller boards for the LP097X02 screen but did not specify the SLD6. Do you think this would also work for my ipad2? Thank you so much for your video. I have been wondering what to do with. My obsolete iPad 2 and also needed a small 2nd screen for my desktop Windows PC.
Great idea to repurposing these screens. Wonder if there are any online databases for screens and display driver boards? That's a very nice lunch box computer you've got there!

I do have an iPad 2 with part of the touch digitizer unresponsive, which makes the device nearly useless, and thought that might be repairable, being an old, obsolete model I don't think it's worth putting any money or effort into it, and guess it will serve me better as a little monitor instead. Nice!
Cool. Has anyone worked out how to preserve the touch aspects say so can connect to an single board like ESP32 or RPi
So cool. Love the look of the suitcase computer! Subscribed.
I found this: LP097QX2 (SP)(AV)
Hi, I have the iPad Air 1st Generation and I am trying the same thing!
first ipad’s software was so nice! i keep it as it is.
Hi, did you ever figure out what the connector at 4:35 is? I see some of these boards that come with it and others that don't! Thank you!
Some LCD panels require 24V power. This port is to attach an optional 24V power board.
Being able to jailbreak it and get HDMI out through the lightning connector would be a better approach
I was making driverboatds 5 years ago
Funny thing is you can pick up a thin sleek external monitor now for less than all the stuff you need 🤔
Priceless
there is a way to use the touch ? some kind of interface ?
Yes, there is. On AliExpress there is a board available that does this. I linked it in one of my three iPad videos (in the description).
Good work, thanks for that idea.👍👍👍
Have you ever done this with an E ink device?
Ok, retro is back to the youth....so, I just subscribed. Hello!
Thanks!
I couldn't find it in your channel so I have to ask sorry ... I wanted to know what the small commodore 64 computer was the one that was giving the display output? Thank you. Is it the c64x?
It's the C64 Mini: www.amazon.de/C64-Mini-Electronic-Games/dp/B08JW9X4N5
Holy Crab ! This is what i am looking for so long !!!! Thank you very much for sharing this video and your efforts !
I own a Ipad II 32gb - dinosaur wich i could possible turn into this kind of display !
Thank you so much !
You can hear the iPad Police approaching in the background. Lol.
So how can you make it look put together again?
That is AWESOME!! Thanks!!
Is there a way to use the touchscreen?
Do you know its power consumption? I have an ipad 3 which I assume the power draw will be similar.
With 2A you should be on the safe side.
How to get audio ? Thanks for you video !!
Best to use a $5 hdmi audio splitter.
Brilliant! I am after the control board for the ipad mini lcd display but i can't find it anywhere. Do you if it exists? Cheers!
They exist. Try ebay or AliExpress.
Great video - thanks for C64 demo! I have been unable to find the adapter board for the iPad mini Gen 4 (36-pin display connector) on either Ebay or AliExpress. The 50-pin connector seems to be more common. Do you know of any other sources for that board, or a source for a converter cable from 36-pin to 50-pin? Thanks! @@RetroWK
@@jayblev Nope, sorry! I try to find something but I assume you already did the same.
would it be possible to make a case where few 18650 batteries with a charging board will serve as the power source ?
That case already exists: de.aliexpress.com/item/1005003026843618.html
Great video and useful to know how to do this. Are you going to do a full build video of the end project you used it in?
Here are the links to the video where I made the suitcase Amiga: ruclips.net/video/FdWeXtKIgYQ/видео.html and here is part 2: ruclips.net/video/0eIXewsCF-k/видео.html
Thanks a lot for the inspiring video! I immediately started disassembling my iPad 1and ordered a controler board :) But mine has not a ...SLD6 display, it has a ..SLF6 one, guess it was one of the lastes ones sold, bought it new, when iPad 2 just came out
Should still work. Check the following link for links to more controller boards: www.wolfgangkierdorf.de/retro/ipads.html
Have you ever done a MacBook Pro screen? I have a dead old one and considering doing the same. But I’m concerned that, when I look at the connector (flex cable), there may not be an available controller card for it.
Yes, I did that. You can get controller boards for pretty much everything that displays pixels.
Off topic, but what font did you use on your video thumbnail please??
Commodore PET font.
If I missed it I apologize
Is it only the gen 1 you do this to?
Will it work on a Gen 5 iPad?
Works with all ipads but you need the matching controller board.
@@RetroWKis there a good site to search for comparable boards for any type of screen
@@joshymcdaniel9233 Nope. Sorry. I just check eBay or AliExpress. Sometimes you can also find these things on Amazon.
@@joshymcdaniel9233 ... and you can also check the photos on iFixIt. Sometimes you can see the LCD panel number there in the pictures.
I never though of repurpose the screens from old ipads, guess i need to see what lcd is in my ipad air 1 :D i was also in the market for an portable screen.
do you have the link for iPad mini LCD Driver Board HDMI compatible because I have four of them that I like to use for my car headrest
If you send me the lcd type number I can check. You can also check AliExpress. Search for: lcd (serial) hdmi controller
It would be nice to turn this into a display for RC drones or vehicles that are being used for analog FPV (First Person View). It would be a LOT better, for some, than having to wear goggles.
Thank you for a great video! I have a ipad with screen LTN097XL01-A01 . Do you think the LP097X02-SLD6 will fit?
Should work
Ok, thank you! @@RetroWK
I'd like to see this for the iPhone screens. They are better for some smaller projects. Too bad Apple didn't include a simple HDMI port on the iPhone/iPad.
That would be cool, it's not as simple as just having an HDMI in port, because it would also need additional circuitry that most people wouldn't need
Can this work on Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1" panel too? I have old raspberry pi and that would be perfect size screen for "mini arcane game cabinet"- project. :D
Sure. Just check the display id and Google for "driver board" plus the display id.
Is it possible to use the old casing (once the original iPad innards are removed and only the screen and new board are left) for this? My guess is not really since the new ports are too big for it.
You might need a Dremel to make it work, but it could work.
Spending extra money on those display drivers along with getting a non-standard resolution 10 inch display without a case is simply nothing more than a hobby project.

i bought a similar board from aliexpress for a broken ipad2.
PSA - you may have to try multiple different controller boards before one works. I am sending one back because it does not power the backlight.
That should work.
The algorithm must have noticed the IPad 1 sitting on my desk I still use as a kindle reader.
Great idea to repurposing these screens. Wonder if there are any online databases for screens and display driver boards? That's a very nice lunch box computer you've got there!
I added a link in the description to the list of working driver boards I found so far.
Anyone knows if this can be done with an iPhone original screen?
Can i do this trick with an iMac 27“ ? To use it with a Mac mini
Could work. You need the id of the lcd display and then find the controller board online.
