Hi Peter, I have bought a used 2003 RAV4 2.0vvti (1AZ-FE), manual transmission, 5 door. Thanks for uploading these videos, they are helping me learn more about my car.
i have for over 5 months wanted to disconnect rear wheel drive - Do i have to close any holes and do i have to take the fuse for 4wd off, or will it make no difference on or off? would be nice to make a video on Subtracting back Wheel drive..
Nice. Not all RAV4s have the same 4wd system. The 4.1-4.2's were always in 4wd mode whereas the 4.3, 4.4's were on demand. The 2000-2006 RAV4 4.2's were considered to have the best 4wd (AWD) in these cars with the visco-coupling, and rear limited slip differential. The 4.1's were pretty good as well. The later 4.3/4.4's were more for street and fuel economy.
Thanks Peter, I am wondering how much slack or play is acceptable in the drive shaft. I have all four wheels of the ground with the car on jack stands. When I put the car in park and rotate the driveshaft by hand how much should it turn before it engages the front wheel. The engine is not running. The reason I ask is that I have a stange rumbling noise coming from the transmission area when the car is driving ot gets louder when I make right turns. I do not think it is the outside CV joints or bearings. I am concern there is a problem with the front Differential. Thanks
I have a 1996 RAV 4. All the four wheels appear to be working at the same time. So what then is the use of the Differential button? I thought only two wheels work normally and the other two only get active when you press the Lock Differential button. Is it oaky when all four wheels work?
In normal drive it is 50:50 - under slippage, I.e. the front slips, power will go to the rear making it 20:80. The viscous centre diff Is dynamic, the torque split changes according to conditions, base line is 50:50 The diff lock LOCKS the split to 50:50
this video has been very help full to me thanks a lot. can u do a video on how to change the oil in the transfer box/case and also how to remove the drive shaft
Hi, thank you for the video. I'd like to know more about the center differential. Is it located at the gearbox with front diff? Does it need oil changes as well?
Does my Toyota RAV4 2018 model 4WD ALA49L 2.2L 4D4 diesel have the same equipment ? What about the oil used ? Name, brand, type ? Thank you for your time
Hi, I will want to take out my central drive propeller for my Rav4 2008 thereby converting it to a 2wd. Does that have any implication and what is the best way to go about?
You will need to install a whole new transmission, one that comes from a front-drive Rav4. You could get one in a junkyard but it will be a lot of work and a lot of money. Then comes the electronics that control the transmission; that will also have to be updated for the new transmission. Probably best to just sell the vehicle and get a newer used model that already comes with front-wheel drive.
@@menguardingtheirownwallets6791 I have the front wheel drive and I want the four-wheel drive. The money and the amount of parts to add all of it is not worth it? I can do the labor but I didn't know you have to switch out the transmission
Hello Peter, I just bought a 98, rav4,they might have been driving it with old worn tires on back and new on front. Now has a bad popping in front when going slow with wheel turned. Can that damage an awd transmission transmission? transmission?
Hello Peter I would like to ask you about the gearbox in rav 4 d4d year 2004. The problem arises that in fifth gear below 1800 revolutions you have to use a lot of force to shift into neutral position, if you shift at 2000 rpm everything is ok. The clutch was changed approx. 20,000 km ago and the oil again 3,000 km ago (by Toyota service), but the problem remains. Thanks for your help.
Hello Peter .I have a question not related to this video, I have a Rav 4 xtr d4d 3 door 2005 and i want to change the outer serpentine belt .I have realised it has a manual adjuster bolt and i need to get a new one as am worried it will break.Do you know where i can find this and do you have a video. Many thanks
Hi.....I have a 2009 Rav4 cruiser....Anyway it has a "4wd lock button ".....My question is my rav4 a all wheel drive or just a 2 wheel drive and only becomes 4wd when that lock button is activated ?
maximusEagle hi Maximus, I have a 2010 RAV4 4wd. And the lock button locks the rear clutch to ensure that power is being sent to the rear wheels. I have researched a lot and even read a PDF by Toyota, but I can’t figure out how much power torque is sent to the rear. But, if you are having trouble getting going, this button does the job. It automatically shuts off above 25mph. Other than that, I have no trouble driving in the snow without it on, I use just normal M/S tires, nothing crazy. I only use the button if I need help getting going or if it’s deep snow or mud. The 4WD system is always active but it only comes in when it’s needed like when you start losing traction. They say it comes on when cornering, like it boosts the outside wheel to coming you from skidding if you are going fast. They also say it helps if they step on it from a start but I bet that would only maybe make a difference if you turn of TRAC and VSC. Great car though, very reliable. Got her with 95k miles and I’m crowding 140k. No major problems
I had the two wheel drive but I will have to convert it to the four-wheel drive. Do I have to change the transmission also or do I need a adapter or converter?
I have a 1998 4WD but when i change from D to R i notice a delay in changing followed by a bung. Similarly from R to D. When just starting in the morning however, i do not experience the bung. It happens after driving for a few minutes and i want to reverse. Thanks
It looks like your transmission fluid needs a change. Delayed shifting of gears or excessive noise when shifting generally needs transmission oil change. Start there first. There are tons of videos on RUclips to change Rav4 transmission oil. Really easy.
Hello! Please very much i have 2 videos on my chanel about 10 second long each about my toyota rav4 that i think are problem (they may not be). Can you please check them and comment if it is normal? One video is about oil cap pressure. The other is about driveshaft play when rotating by hand. Thank you a million times!
Hi Thanks for your great video. I have got a Toyota RAV4 2007 with only 34,000KMs on it. The car has the rear differential but it doe not have any 4WD push-button inside the cabin! I am wondering whether this is normal and if it is, why is it like that? Does that mean my RAV4 is AWD all the time? Thank you very much
Engines have oil in them, so the bearings are lubricated by the engine oil. See that mid-way bearing in the driveshaft; what is lubricating it? A little bit of grease in between two road-salt-damaged rubber seals, on a shaft that is spinning a few thousand RPM constantly? Even the main CV joints don't have to withstand that much punishment (the seals rotate 'with' the shaft, they are not stationary). It's amazing the center bearing even lasts 3 or 4 years. I would not want to buy any AWD vehicle specifically because of that one huge defect. Either install an easily replaceable center bearing that can be swapped out every 2-3 years or forget it.
It's "How does the 4wd system work?" Or "This is how the 4wd system works." Not "How works the 4wd system" Just trying to help. Other than that your English is fine. Good video!
Respect to your video, you are more educating the people with easy understanding explanations, Mercy.
