This is a colt lightweight commander with an alloy frame and steel slide, not to be confused with the all steel combat commander from the 70s and on. Hence the “LW” on the serial number. This is a pre 70 so from 1949-1969. Serial numbers extended from 001 to 065 in 1949, and 66-LW to 60277-LW from 1950 to 1969. The last “LW” suffix pistol was assembled in February 1969. Then the resume March 1969 to April 1970 with the CLW serial prefix.

For those obsessed with having a safety on a firearm, you can’t beat the Colt 80 series. You have the manual safety, the grip safety and the firing pin block safety. Of course, the fourth and #1 safety is keeping your finger OFF the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.

The guns are not drop safe and can discharge if dropped on the hammer. That being said, the chances of any hammer fired gun being dropped directly on the hammer are pretty slim. But there’s always a chance. It’s a chance I’d rather not take. I like the series 80 1911’s better. Many people say the series 70 guns have a better trigger pull. Here’s the thing with that. With the exception of professional or competition shooters, I don’t actually know anybody who can shoot well enough to take advantage of the supposedly better trigger pull. I see so many people who tout the advantages of the series 70 trigger but their groups are still pretty large and their accuracy is terrible. The series 70 triggers aren’t helping them shoot any better. I’d rather have the extra margin of safety. A better trigger will not help you shoot better. Shooting makes you shoot better. Repetition and high round counts with your weapon make you shoot better. Many of these same people I know with expensive 1911’s barely go to the range once every 2 years.

She does have some snap, wasn't expecting that first time I shot it. Herniated a disk in my neck (no idea how I did that) and my arm is so weak now I can barely hold it. Hopefully after I get that taken care of I can get some more range time with my Colt.

I bought a decent used Colt 1991 A1 Officer's Model back in the mid 90's for $300. Ended up selling it to a good friend. Ive always wished I'd have kept it. Just last week, I picked up a nice used Colt 1991 A1 Combat Commander for $750 from my neighbor. He threw in 3 magazines, 75 rounds of ammo and a pistol case with it. And the gun has rose wood diamond checkered grips on it. I'd been thinking about getting another 1911 here lately, but never thought it would be an ole Colt. I just happened to be visiting with my neighbor and mentioned to him I was kinda looking for a 1911. He said "Hang on, I'll be right back" and went into his house and came out with the Commander. He had just took it on a trade and was just wanting to sell it. I didn't even know he had it. I know I got a heck of a deal on it- and I'm keeping this one ! I ordered a couple of recoil springs for it today and I've got it in a leather holster.

I have a Colt Stainless Combat Commander that I've had since 1995 and it has over 20,000 rounds through it. I retired it from EDC after 10 years in 2005 for a SIG P220. To this day it still functions flawlessly and when I do carry it on occasion I carry it with confidence. However, I did have to replace several parts at different round counts but even with that, the gun has been a winner for me. Every American gun owner should have a Colt 1911 of some flavor in their collection.

I am hoping that CZ, current owners of the Colt brand, carry on with the historical line-up of handguns.

I really like the original Commander with the Aluminum frame as you said.
Now it's called the lightweight Commander.
My new favorite is the CCO Concealed Carry Officer.
It has a Commander Length Slide and an Officer's shorter length butt. So it has a standard magazine capacity of 6 rounds.
They have been around for a few years.
The Lipsey's Special Wiley Clapp Edition CCO is awesome.
It even has the front stap hand checkered by Pete Single and Novak sights. The front sight is the Classic brass bead.
This makes a really good Carry gun in an IWB holster as the shorter butt and slim profile makes it easier to conceal.

1911s are target sweet. If you are holding the firearm right after firing the sites come right back on target. When I enlisted in 1988 this was the weapon I used in basic training and AIT.

First handgun I bought back in the 1980's was a Colt Commander model. Colt Mark IV Series 80. I paid something like $400 at the time which I thought was high. Still like new. Even have the original box and manual. My big problem is what grandson to leave it to when I am gone.

Sootch00 l carried a Colt Government model 45 while I served as a Navy MP back in late 80’s to the early 90’s. That’s where the love affair started, then came a Blue series 80 Combat Commander in 45 ACP, that was fellowed up by a Blue series 80 Combat Commander in Colt Super 38 Auto. I still have em and I still shoot ‘em and I still love em ❤️

Just FYI but the pistol you reviewed is an alloy-framed Commander, not the steel-framed Combat Commander. That was immediately obvious when you weighed the Commander against a steel-framed Government Model. Other clues: the serial number has an LW suffix, which means "lightweight". Also the black alloy frame is a different color than the blued slide, and the slide is marked "Commander Model" instead of "Combat Commander". And finally I looked up the serial number on Colt's website which shows it is a 1966 aluminum-framed Commander Model. Great video otherwise... I look forward to every one you make.

@Ron Doobie SC = Satin Colt finish. If your pistol is numbered like that it most likely was originally finished in satin nickel.

    • @williamhudson4938
      @williamhudson4938 3 года назад +2

Exactly! 3/4" of slide and barrel doesn't equal over 10 ounces! I did the same research. The all-steel Combat Commander didn't come out until 1970.

Yea but the one I'd like to have is a General Officers Model, not a Colt Officers Model, they're different and the two different names cause quite a bit of confusion with people, when I mention a General Officers Model people usually believe I'm talking about the Colt Officers Model but I'm not, they're two entirely different things.
The General Officers Model variant of the M1911A1 was a batch of M1911A1's that Rock Island Arsenal took and cut down to the same size as the Colt Combat Commander back in 1974, they really worked them over into first rate pieces, they machined down the sides of the slides and frames to restamp them which unfortunately did away with all the original stampings so it's impossible to tell which of the original manufacturers each particular host gun was made from.
They tightened up the slides on them, blued them, cut heavy deep checkering into the arched mainspring housings and a bunch of other nice touches including a nice plaque on one of the wooden grips so it could be engraved with the name of the General that requested it and had it issued to them, not just any General could get one, they had to be in charge of a combat unit like a division commander, they also came with a highly polished black leather belt and holster made for each one.
They're about as rare as a Singer .45 and go for about the same amount whenever one comes up for sale.
If you go to research them online to read about them or see pictures don't enter "General Officers Model .45 automatic" or something like that because the vast majority of drop downs you'll get on it are for the Colt Officers Model, enter something like "Military issue M1911A1 General Officers Model" to narrow down the field and eliminate a lot of the confusion over the name.
I first learned about them in the early 90's when someone gave me a box of old American Riflemen magazines and the one dated Feb 1974 (I think Feb, I still have the magazine buy it's in a storage facility) has a story about them and how Generals can put in a request for them, it's also the same AR magazine that's the feature story is on John Garand as his famous invention the M1 rifle and has a picture on the cover that was him at that current time at the Springfield Armory museum holding one of his inventions, it's actually the same picture that Fulton Armory has used a sketched version of for a logo, they note in the magazine that Garand passed away between when his picture had been taken and he was interviewed for the article and before the issue went to print.
Edit: the military gave it the nomenclature of "M15 Pistol" when they made them available to qualifying Generals who could obtain them.
