  • Some people like to play with fire and find chopping wood a good exercise, but most of us like the romantic idea but hate the hassle of cleaning chimneys, storing wood, repainting black ceillings, warm livingrooms vs cold bedrooms etc. or don't have the space or housing for a fireplace. Now, here is the answer for you all, an almost real looking fireplace with real fireplace sound. And the best of all, easy to make and inexpensive to purchase and maintenance in comparison to real fireplaces.

Removed a section in my camper where the entertainment area is and installed. Works great. Instead of propane furnace heat, I can use this ruclips.net/user/postUgkxATHBlMJwipGgVWseuAFKvDQ_5R4_lywo to heat the camper as long as it's hooked up to shore power. Only thing I do not like is there does not seem to be a thermostat. I'm presuming it has a built-in one so it does not overheat. Really like all the other color options it has to offer.

I tried this using a 32” smart TV I got cheap. I put it in our non working fireplace. I wasn’t sure if our Wi-Fi would work in the fireplace, but it sure does! Now I can pick any of the fireplace videos on RUclips! I thought it would look really silly, but with the fireplace screen across it it looks great.

My uncle, a frugal Scottish gentleman aged 80, told me that on chilly mornings he doesn't put the heating on, he puts on a fireplace DVD that he bought from a pound shop. He said it made him feel warmer. I didn't believe him so I tried it myself at home - and it does seem to make me feel a bit warmer!

No sarcasm here. I've done that for years and it works for me. The fire and sound relax me, and I think that's why it feels warmer.

I built one of these ages ago after trying lots of different designs and use it every day. I bought a dirt cheap old fashioned log effect from an old gas electric fire and removed the old red heat and metal disc flame effects bulbs { they generate heat to spin the little metal fans } and replace with the new LED flicker fire bulbs, they last 10,000 hours and are about £6 each. Second hand TV with DVD player of your choice and I cut the log effect in half to be nearer the tv screen. A real fire with sound and all in less than £100, I was going to add a pond fog generator for smoke but the water vapor was a bit dodgey near the TV lol

Thanks for sharing this idea, I'm going to do it with a fire place that we have had for over 15 yrs, it's just been sitting in a corner doing nothing, I've looked on line and the same fire place is $500 or more, this one works off 220 volts, so I'm gutting it out,the heater doesn't work, but everything else looks like new, even has a wire mesh screen,I'll post it when done. oh and far as tv, already have a flat screen 32 inch smart HD tv that was given to me a yr ago, been packed away, so altogether this is costing me maybe the price of getting another AV or HDMI cord.

Sadly this won't work in an antique Victorian cast iron fire grate because the 'format' (so to speak) is vertical (the fire space taller than it is wider.) The TV would have to sit on its side. The only way to solve the problem would be to make my own video of a real fire with the camera held sideways (portrait style.)

Some people are looking for the functionality of a fireplace true, however lots of us just like the appearance, tranquility of one. I just spent $800 on an electric fireplace, it does have a heat option but to me I didn't really need the heat option, I'm still going to have to run my central unit because it's not that powerful and it's not going to probably help because I have cathedral ceilings. So yes some people need a fireplace because they're looking for a heat unit, but some of us just like to look at it, it's peaceful!

So the placebo effect apparently even works for fireplaces in Scottish homes...I always thought the frugal Scots sucked 'Extra Strong Peppermints' to keep warm....can't imagine them forking out for a DVD and the equipment to play it on.
