    I really like your asthetic - very tasteful and very appealing for the space without being too much "matching tie and handkerchief" if you know what I mean. The time you spent designing it was certainly worthwhile. Not sure if you've ever considered it but you have quite an eye for interior design. Sorry - I don't mean to sound so fawning, but it's refreshing to see balance - while the mantle certainly draws attention, it doesn't take over the room. Really impressive.

    I have a 1998 fireplace surround and fell in love with this style is there a way to retrofit this one over the one I have now. It has a 7” deep mantle, 60” tall, 70” at the widest. The fix box is standard size with 12” tiles surrounding the box. Would I have to remove all the old one or would this be able to slide over it in place. Also would there be room to run electrical sockets? Mine is also a corner fireplace.

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking 4 года назад

      Hi Pattie. Yes, this fireplace mantel can be adapted by a local custom woodworker for your needs. The existing mantel would have to be removed. There's likely space to run electrical so you can include an electrical outlet.
      Here's a link to the plans you can purchase - woodenitbenice.ca/collections/woodworking-plans
      When you look for a quality woodworker, I'd stay away from businesses that operate without their own website (e.g., use Facebook). I hope this helps

    Thanks for the great video! How did you finish the front edge of the mantel top? It looks like you were using a piece of 3/4" plywood but I can't see the layers in the finished product. Any info would be really helpful.

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking

      Aaron Scott I used iron-on edge banding. It's a product that is a thin veneer with heat-activated glue on the back. It is attached using a clothes iron to activate the glue. Have you used it before?

    • @aaronscottmusic1
      @aaronscottmusic1 6 лет назад

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking 6 лет назад

      It will hold up well if it's attached properly. Here's a video of a plywood table where I show how to apply the edge banding. ruclips.net/video/0O1abWfg-CQ/видео.html It primes and paints well. I hope this helps.

    Question, is there a reason why someone shouldn't use MDF for a mantel? I can't think of a reason why. I see yourself and others using poplar or maple. Thoughts on material choices?? I want to build one like yours. Thanks,

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking 5 лет назад +9

      Hi Alvin. There are a few reasons I avoid MDF when I build most things:
      - cutting and shaping MDF creates a lot of fine dust - much worse than wood or plywood (wood dust is a carcinogen)
      - MDF tends to warp more than plywood on horizontal surfaces
      - MDF can move with humidity changes whereas plywood won't
      - MDF doesn't paint well with water-based finishes as it can swell
      - MDF can be fragile and chip easier than other building materials
      - MDF doesn't hold screws well
      - MDF doesn't hold well with glue as it can just flake apart
      In short, I'm not a fan of MDF. I use plywood because it's strong, stable, and holds well with glue and screws.

    Can you re-explain the purpose of the panels with the rounded edges?

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking 5 лет назад

      The panels with the rounded edges are separate pieces of wood. I built the frames first. Then I needed to cut a rabbit (a recessed area) for the panel to fit into. I used a router bit to do this, so when It gets to the corners, it cuts a 1/4 circle at the corner. Instead of chiseling out the corner to make it square, it's faster to round the corner of the panel that gets glued into place. Does that make sense?
