Here's the deal... no one does this today. No one. It's music and it's musical and it's talent and it's amazing. Nothing comes close to this today... nothing. Thanks, Judy... thank you so much!!
"Age cannot wither her...." how true! The voice is still as pure and true as it ever was. I just listened to your beautiful rendition of this song, and it took my breath away, and transported me right back to my youth, when I used to lie on my bed at college and just let your beautiful voice wash over me. Gives me the same pleasure now in my 60's, as it did then. You have such a God given gift Judy.Thank you for all the wonderful memories, of listening to your music over the years. The quality was consistently OUTSTANDING.Regards, Christine.
One of my favorite folk songs from the 1960s-70s was Farewell to Tarwathie song by Judy Collins and Whales. Wriien as a poem by George Scroggie circa 1856. It turns out he was my great-great- grand uncle. His brother Robert left Scotland and settled in Sarnia Ontario, Canada. What a thrill to have such a connection to such a wonderful song. The mellody has been used in many folk songs" The Wagoner Lad, Farewell Angelina and others.
Judy Collins never received her highly-due recognition in the U.K.: a real tragedy. Listening to it again takes me back to the late 1960s when I used to frequent Folk Clubs. But no-one sang this song as beautifully as JC. In this rendering, her amazing voice is simply pitch perfect.
Judy is just as beautiful now as she was as a young woman. Her blue eyes pierce a darkened hall all the way to the back and her long, flowing white hair add to her timeless intrigue...and the voice is still one of the best.
If you are unhappy with with your lot in life , listen to this song think of the suffering of the sailors months on the ocean in high seas whipped up by gale force 9 winds 16 hours a day for a pittance often resulting in frostbite and lost limbs or death and the needless slaughter of the harmless and defenceless Whales I cry every time I hear it and it puts my own life into perspective .
Exactly! -- Very well said, sir, and I share your emotional reaction to this incredibly beautiful song sung so masterfully by Judy Collins. I remember the first time I heard this song. It stopped me in my tracks and mesmerized me -- and it still does.
Perfectly pitched and pure voice. Not one note is out of place. One of my favourite tracks in "Colors of the Day" album. Her live performance is just as flawless as the recorded version. I very much hope that she will perform this song when she comes to Edinburgh in March, 2020. I've never seen her in concert, so this would be a real treat for me.
Thank you so much Judy for the most gorgeous live rendition of this Scottish song in your concert in Edinburgh on Monday. It was flawless and this charming melody reminded me of Jean Redpath singing John McCormack's "Song to the Seals". It was the most unforgettable experience in my life to see you sing live. I will always treasure this memory. Your voice is the voice of amazing grace. Please come back soon to Scotland and we would love to have you back any time. The gentleman sitting next to me was moved to tears when you sang "Send in the clowns". He said that it was his favourite (and mine too). You and Mr Walden were both amazing!
oh! my boyfriend bought us tickets to see and hear her in London - one of my nineteenth birthday presents which i've never forgotten (whenever i remember it)
I have always loved Miss.Collins voice is as beautiful now as it was when I was a young boy in the 70s. And she still has the same gentle spirit, and still so pretty. Had a big crush on her back then!😉😉😉
We all have gifts, creative gifts. It comes from God our father the greatest creator of all. I am so glad that one of Judys gifts is singing. She doesn't need music, not every singer is as blessed as she. Her voice is crystal clear. I can bake you a cake or clean your house but she can move your soul. This song to me is perfection !! Thank you so much for sharing with us your wonderful gift..xo
My favorite song of hers, followed closely by "Send in the Clowns". Got to see her live in Dallas in the late 1990's. She was such a gracious performer, interacting with the audience, telling stories, and of course, singing beautifully. Not all performers are as good live as in studio, but she was. Just riveting.
My God what a full life I have lived, from New York with that crew (Richie Havens), all the way to LA, with this almost perfect person a Lady of the Canyon, this was the time of 8tracks, fast cars, and fun.Judy I love you still. .....BB
No. You are thinking of "Bonnie Ship the Diamond. This one, "Farewell to Tarwathie" was on her "Whales And Nightingales" album, released in November 1970.
over all the oceans and lands I've been , only two kinds of people I've chanced to meet - the sensitive, and the dead. Long live the sensitive...thanks, Judy!
sounds like you know the "magik" of the ocean. There is no place on earth that is as wonderful and lonely at the same time. Really gives a man perspective. Four weeks on the water will cure all ills.
This brings me to a complete stop... hanging on every note... and when she goes up a pitch for the last verse... I find myself leaning in and closing my eyes... because it is so beautiful... my heart goes out to the whales...and their survival... they should not be hunted!t
i have loved this one since 1970!! i understand it was written in 1857. i have just posted a keyboard version to a disco beat (please dont worry, it's fine and it's contextual; that's what they call the beat on the yamaha….) and to the related melody of 'the parting song'
Clearly one of the best voices ever (along with Baez). Among my top ten LPs ever is her "In My Life" which I had to buy more than once cause I kept wearing it out... even with a pro-quality turntable.
Love the song. I know one shouldn't analyse a song as beautiful as this....only i must say there's both people and birds in Greenland :) ;) Love your Words btw BluegillGreg!
One of my favorite artists....such a pure, beautiful voice. I first heard this song when I was very young, and I've always loved it....thanks for posting.
I saw Judy singing this song live a few years ago on Irish TV. Such a crystal clear, beautiful voice. The Irish TV version did not have the annoying whale song in the background either which just distracts from Judy's performance imo.
@Jenniferspartner Although whale hunting must be one of the most obnoxious things that our species has ever done, I just love this song. As soon as you mentioned those other two songs, I recognised the connection. Wonderful song.
So beautiful - Judy's soulful voice above the whales' haunting cries. In the 1800's whale-oil lamps made a reason for whaling, but in this century there's no excuse to hunt and kill these magnificent seafaring mammals. Judy's haunting ballad gives a powerful call: Save the Whales!
Reminds me of falling asleep standing up covered in blood with my knife still gutting black cod, three o clock in the morning fifty miles off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. I'm afraid I'd do it again given the chance, old bones and all. It's the Ocean's version of god with stars jumping crazy all over the blackest sky as the boat drifts, rocking, with the deck lights out and the motor off. Aren't we all seawater and stardust anyway?
Hey, anybody else notice that an image comes up at around 1:18...standing white figures? not sure what that is or why it would be there. I can't pause on the image at the right moment to see it clearly after trying several times. Very mysterious... also she has a beautiful voice, not into the traditional songs, but I really love some of her other songs she sings.
I love this song, but i want to say that she should sing 'FAIRWEIL' @0:24. if you would care to listen to The corries' Derwentwater's Farewell, they sing 'fareweil, fareweil .......give it a listen. They are really good
And when Assisi, WA rises off Fidalgo Island next to the Shakespearean theatre-in-the-round, the OSD Univ (ocean systems defense) and is re-christened Tarwathie Island to launch the Django Bridges between Seattle and Santa Barbara, Judy will probably sing this one again...ssshhh, don't tell David, Graham, and the Mayan!! :-)
I just heard the back story to Judy's recording of this song tonight:www.npr.org/2014/12/26/373303726/recordings-that-made-waves-the-songs-that-saved-the-whales
Remember that you once lived near the beach with a barefoot co-ed in cut-offs and played this song on vinyl and it makes it easier to grow old,
This a capella piece shows what an incredibly beautiful voice she has.
Tarwathie, - A wee place not far from my home town (Fraserburgh) in NE Scotland.... Lovely nostalgic song. Written circa 1850 by George Scroggie.
Here's the deal... no one does this today. No one. It's music and it's musical and it's talent and it's amazing. Nothing comes close to this today... nothing. Thanks, Judy... thank you so much!!
I disagree. Sarah Jarosz, Aiofe O'Donovan, Sarah Watkins, Sierra Hull...
There are awesome singers around today but they are few and far between.
Nevertheless Judy is in her own category.
Joan Baez
dman - could not have said it better. Still holds true in crazy 2020.
You are so wrong. There are lots of truly amazing artists out there. I highly doubt Judy herself would agree with you.
"Age cannot wither her...." how true! The voice is still as pure and true as it ever was. I just listened to your beautiful rendition of this song, and it took my breath away, and transported me right back to my youth, when I used to lie on my bed at college and just let your beautiful voice wash over me. My 3 year old grandson insists on hearing this before his nap. Loves the whales song! Thanks, Judy!

Her voice has been, and still is, like liquid silver.
Oh that voice.....those eyes!
Whales sound so much like sad puppy dogs :( That plus Judy's haunting vocals... waterworks every time.

Wow.. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Absolutely beautiful.
My best friend, Lisa and I listened to this album almost every day. We both lived this song. She died at 39, so my heart aches everytime I hear it.
Perfectly pitched and pure voice. Not one note is out of place. One of my favourite tracks in "Colors of the Day" album. Her live performance is just as flawless as the recorded version. Did she?
That’s what actual singers can do as opposed to performers who need digital help
oh! my boyfriend bought us tickets to see and hear her in London - one of my nineteenth birthday presents which i've never forgotten (whenever i remember it)
I can't get through this song without crying. It touches my soul.
With you there.
I have always loved Miss.Collins voice is as beautiful now as it was when I was a young boy in the 70s. And she still has the same gentle spirit, and still so pretty. Had a big crush on her back then!😉😉😉
Whaling & War share a strange beauty~ with love...lost/found.
We all have gifts, creative gifts. It comes from God our father the greatest creator of all. I am so glad that one of Judys gifts is singing. My mother used to sing this to me 😢
Hauntingly beautiful, ever since first hearing it at Ft. Devens, Mass-1971
+Jim Hill I spent a year at Devens - June 83 - June 84!
+QuantumRift Pleasant memories! ASA 33G20 with Autotune!
Lucky you! I only had the album.
at St. Augustine, Fla, Summer of 1970,
from Whales & Nightingales album.
Haunting - that was the first word that came to me!
My favorite song of hers, followed closely by "Send in the Clowns". Got to see her live in Dallas in the late 1990's. She was such a gracious performer, interacting with the audience, telling stories, and of course, singing beautifully. Not all performers are as good live as in studio, but she was. Just riveting.
love it! I lov how Judy does not trill her voice and add flowery bits like some would be folk singers
My God what a full life I have lived, from New York with that crew (Richie Havens), all the way to LA, with this almost perfect person a Lady of the Canyon, this was the time of 8tracks, fast cars, and fun.Judy I love you still. .....BB
One very special lady is our. Joan have been a fan for 60 years and still going
Her voice is so beautiful. She is such an accomplished vocalist.
Beautiful, and she makes it seem effortless.
No. You are thinking of "Bonnie Ship the Diamond. This one, "Farewell to Tarwathie" was on her "Whales And Nightingales" album, released in November 1970.
what a voice stirs the Scottish blood in me!!
over all the oceans and lands I've been , only two kinds of people I've chanced to meet - the sensitive, and the dead.
Long live the sensitive...thanks, Judy!
This song has always been one of my favorite performed by Judy Collins. She's going to be in concert this week at THE EGG, in Albany, NY.
Love this song -- I used to sing it as a lullaby to my children.
And the song. ONEOF THE BEST ABOUT THE SEA, EVER. Thanks Judy.
sounds like you know the "magik" of the ocean. There is no place on earth that is as wonderful and lonely at the same time. Really gives a man perspective. Four weeks on the water will cure all ills.
Transcendent voice accompanied only by the whales-magical still!
I treasured the old National Geographic record of Wale songs, in my barn atic, as a child...
An Angel's Voice from on High, Stuck in the confines of earth, Thank you Judy for the years of singing and giving us such joy.
Found this song after hearing it on a Freakonomics podcast episode about whaling. Glad I listened to that episode.
This brings me to a complete stop... hanging on every note... and when she goes up a pitch for the last verse... I find myself leaning in and closing my eyes... because it is so beautiful... my heart goes out to the whales...and their survival... they should not be hunted!t
She has a very beautiful voice, It has been years since I have heard her
This brings back memories... i sang this after doing Macbeth
i have loved this one since 1970!! i understand it was written in 1857. i have just posted a keyboard version to a disco beat (please dont worry, it's fine and it's contextual; that's what they call the beat on the yamaha….) and to the related melody of 'the parting song'
Happy Birthday, Judy Collins!
WONDERFUL! Thank You so much for posting this! God Bless you! LCDR John Sullivan, USNR (Ret.) sends.
Have sought in vain the entire episode of this. Tommy Makem hosted it on PBS and it has simply disappeared
Dear Lord that is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing this video! Thanks to Judy for her Blessed Angelic Voice!
Clearly one of the best voices ever (along with Baez). Among my top ten LPs ever is her "In My Life" which I had to buy more than once cause I kept wearing it out... even with a pro-quality turntable.
I have this on the album that i bought in the early 1970's. Judy is simply superb with an incredible pure voice.
lovely as always with Judy...where the angels touch the sea...
Judy sings of my area.
Beautiful.
Love the song. I know one shouldn't analyse a song as beautiful as this....only i must say there's both people and birds in Greenland :) ;) Love your Words btw BluegillGreg!
Beautiful voice
Chills...I just...just chills...
Just beautiful ! - I have loved this since I first heard it in the '70s . .
Aye! You be a lover of the sea.
Old Davie Jones would smile upon thee.
I'm lost for words, this is so good.
@BluegillGreg You made me gasp and feel insufficient. You're a poet, sir, reminding me of the wonder of work and the night.
Lovely song.
Thanks, and Again, Mistress
Simply beautifull
Back at this beaut of a song..
A beautiful voice
Beautiful!
you have a poets heart. I love your words.
One of my favorite artists....such a pure, beautiful voice. I first heard this song when I was very young, and I've always loved it....thanks for posting.

Love is secretly disguised as Judy. Always remember, all mythology came from OUR stories. Stay true, stay real and be human …….,..,,
I live not far from al the named places, tanwathie . Crimon and Mormond Hill. I just love this from the age of a bairn.
I saw Judy singing this song live a few years ago on Irish TV. Such a crystal clear, beautiful voice. The Irish TV version did not have the annoying whale song in the background either which just distracts from Judy's performance imo.
Nice choice Kate , I was kind of in a bad mood . Feel much better now thanks
this is awesome!
Always loved this album - Must get a new needle for my deck so I can play it again!
Anyone who would down vote this is soulless.
@Jenniferspartner Although whale hunting must be one of the most obnoxious things that our species has ever done, I just love this song. As soon as you mentioned those other two songs, I recognised the connection. Wonderful song.
Awesome!
Lovely song.
i miss hearing her rendition of 'Pirate Jenny'.
Memories of the North Atlantic
"Thank you to the whales." ... Judy Collins, that little chick. Always a laugh riot.

Jk it healed my broken soul.
You know you can do it when you don't even need background music
That is just beautyfull
que bien canta, es fabulosa
first heard to this in outherard in galway by a band called ardvanna
Chills.......
Beautiful - now we have mad cat lady...
I love this song, but i want to say that she should sing 'FAIRWEIL' @0:24. if you would care to listen to The corries' Derwentwater's Farewell, they sing 'fareweil, fareweil .......give it a listen. They are really good
How many singers can sing with just whale calls as her backups???
And when Assisi, WA rises off Fidalgo Island next to the Shakespearean theatre-in-the-round, the OSD Univ (ocean systems defense) and is re-christened Tarwathie Island to launch the Django Bridges between Seattle and Santa Barbara, Judy will probably sing this one again...ssshhh, don't tell David, Graham, and the Mayan!! :-)
Unbelievable.
Makes me weep, but that may be becuase I'm off my meds.

I am sure, I hat heard this song in a movie. But I cant remember, which movie?!?!?
