This was my Mom's favorite song, she had it on a 45 record. She used to play it on Saturdays when we were cleaning the house. Sometimes she would listen to it over and over. This song describes my Mom's life. Especially when it came out in 1975. She was always in such turmoil. My father did not make her life easy. Mom passed away in August of 2023. This song still haunts me when I hear it. 😔♥♥♥
In January of 1975, my dear Father took a train from Ft. Lauderdale to Gainesville in Florida just to visit me. I was in graduate school at the University of Florida. On a very cold night I was invited to a party after the Art Opening of a great friend and mentor of mine twenty years my senior. A roaring fire leant two kinds of warmth to an atmosphere of caring folks. This song was on repeat, adding another perfect layer to this feeling of affection that embraced us all. My Father would pass away eighteen years later, but he often spoke of that evening. He was a very sentimental man. His wife of 24 years, my mother, had died of breast cancer at age 43 in 1969. Although he never spoke about it, I am certain it brought memories of her to him. She too was a beautiful vocalist, one that Big Bands that came through the WWII industrial town of Bridgeport, Connecticut where they and I were born, were so impressed, some tried to lure her to come on tour with them. But she had met my Dad by that time, and turned down those chances to raise five children. I know he along with me was very happy he made that trip.
My adult children and a niece know all this great music! Played it all the time in the background , instead of television. Every now and again my niece will surprise me with a song as her mom and I never played the same music!
I first saw and heard Judy around 1963 when I was 14 years-old. She and Tom Paxton I think it was, were making their rounds on Cape Cod, (and Massachusetts) at that time. They put on a nice little show at the old National Guard Armory, (which is now a court house) on Jones Road in Falmouth, Ma. Judy was absolutely fabulous that night! I can still see her on that little stage wearing a white dress and high heels. She had the most beautiful, big blue eyes I have ever witnessed. I've been a huge fan of hers all these years and my favorite song sung by her is, "Both Sides Now".
1975 I married my first wife. I bought the Album Judith which featured this song. When I got home this would always be on the deck having been played by my dear wife. I lost her to cancer after 19 years of marriage but this always takes me back to young love of 1975.
1975 and this was on the radio as I studied for my finals. A relationship with a lovely girl had just come to an end. The divine voice of Judy Collins takes me straight back to my room which was mine for that year, reminding us that dreams and desires don't always have the perfect timing that they need to come true.
A dark chilly night turned off the tv and thinking what is to become of us. Send in the clowns ...don't bother they're here. Wish it was 1976 and I was sitting on a shag carpet listening to this on my record player.
Although I don't fully understand the meaning of this song....I think its beautiful!! What I "do" get from it is the value of clowns to try and make the best of a bad situation.I want this played at my funeral service someday!!
This very much happened to my boyfriend and I. Minus the involvement of kids and took us about 7 years to get together. We been living together for 3 years now but knew each other nearly 10. This song was also part of a dance residual that i was involved with as a kid in the 1980s. For some reason I woke up today with it stuck in my head. So after watching this video and can relate greatly to the why. It made me cry of corse. And no the clowns didn't make me tear up. Mostly cuz when you’re at a great loss at that time of your life, what else can you do but find some comic relief to all that heart break.
Where did this woman get that voice? She became one with the song and its emotion . Others have sung this song but she is this song and all the others don’t compare
I was assaigned in Germany from 1973 through 1976 when I first heard this beautiful piece of music, and still love it today. I listen just for the memories.
The Meaning of This Song (backstory) - This is a song based on a musical "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim. In the musical, the woman Desiree Armfeldt is having an affair with a married man Fredrik. But he doesn't want to continue the relationship and instead wants to be committed to his young wife Anne. Feeling rejected and heartbroken, Desiree sings "Send in the Clowns" which is what they would do in the circus in the old days to distract the audience from a failed performance (i.e., some tragedy happened like someone on the trapeze fell, or a lion attacked a handler, etc). And so she sings "Send in the Clowns" to distract her from the tragedy that is her life.
Beautifully said, yes I completely agree with you . Strange thing is though the “ something beautiful “ for me almost always happens to something of the emotional value. Like doing a kind gesture but no one notices. Either way, a beautiful song . Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it .
A typical 1970s Masterpiece.....loved this as a nine year old in 1975....i am nearly 58 now.....and this brings a tear to my eye......so proud of being a 70s child........
This is one of those songs that inspired absolutely no mediocre feelings about : one either absolutely despised it, . . . or one absolutely cherished it ! My first partner was among the former group. Count me in the latter.
The death of Sondheim brought me here. It's a deeply beautiful arrangement and vocal. I know it was for the Muppets (my deep love) - but I wish that they had used the clowns differently. It could have been very beautiful if they had used the clowns more delicately - blurred perhaps and certainly slower.
Toss up for sure. But I'll say Frank, well because it's Frank!!, arguably the greatest singer/entertainer of the 20th century!!❤ Both are breathtakingly beautiful..and Judy sounds like what angels would sound like singing!
This particular clip, though you’d never know it by seeing it like this, is taken from Judy Collins’ wonderful guest appearance on the original late 70’s The Muppet Show. So those clowns are technically Muppets! An odd design choice but somehow it just...works.
Usually I am quick to be able to understand the Lyrics of Most songs ! But this one ; as much as I Like the tune I try and try to understand its meanings Is there someone That can put me in the picture ??
The man she is singing to, was always pursuing her professing his love, but she was never interested, when she finally realizes she loves him she goes to tell him, but now he has found someone else and she realizes it's too late- she missed her chance for someone that truly loved her
It's referencing the idea of how, in the circus, when someone dies or a huge accident happens (trapeze artist falls and breaks their leg, for example), they send in the clowns to distract the audience while they clean up
@@rodneyfrost1674 Wow, you people are really pathetic. With all due respect, it is not just a matter of your aesthetic predilections. We each of course have our own and it varies from person to person. Rather it is quite concerning with regards to understanding what you are looking at and your interpretative capacity. It is actually quite perfect, that is complimentary. It has to do with ineffably deep and voiceless hurt, sarcasm and parody.

When I was a kid. About six or seven, I thought it was a most beautiful song I ever heard
Such a shame that only 1000 you tube folk have had the benefit of listening to this awesome classical piece of music and theatre - truly wonderful
This is hardly the only venue that presented this beautiful song. Keep the faith!
Do you know how RUclips works?
As of June 14, 2024, it reached 110,000, deservedly.
Beautiful song beautiful voice 💖💃💖

What an absolutely beautiful voice this lady has . I've seen her twice at Leicester Sq Theatre ,she was wonderful!
Judy Collin’s has such a beautiful voice and this was a spectacular performance all around🤩
Judy Collins did a magnificent rendition of Send in the Clowns by Stephen Sondheim.

The best and most beautiful version of melody I've heard. Love the clowns! Cleverly done.
The best presentation of the song of all the others. Miss Collins "aced" it.
This song makes me cry. Makes me think of my mama
I agree me too
Lovely, sad, resolution in song. Her voice is a good medicine for the heart.
Hadn't heard this song for sometime have to say it brought a tear to my eye such a beautiful song which reminded me of a better time. Beautiful

Every piece of this song and it's music is so deeply send a very emotional feeling .Difficult to describe but my tears telling it.
One of the greatest performances, I've seen to date. Such a sad, song, great performance Judy
I love this song. Haven’t heard it for a long time.
THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF MUSIC. THE PIANO IS VERY CRISP AND JUDY CAN SING. VERY SWEET AND SOFT.
I've seen her twice and will again in 4 days, but she never sang this yet. Going with my friend who introduced Judy to me back in the late 60's.(Bill)
I think this is the very best rendering of a Stephen Sondhiem song I have ever heard. ❤️
The definitive version of this song.

Masterful. The first approach to such masterwork
I would have loved to see the king to this song. Rest in peace Lisa Marie. Good night Graceland. TX
One of those most beautiful songs where most would need an even stronger adjective to describe...
We all know what she can do,anyway Judy is one of my favourite artists of all times, she is too good to be true, love her very much
beautiful singing ❤ my favourite singer

Thank you for sharing this song. It is one of my favorite songs. I have very few songs that I like.
the best version I've ever heard.....
Saw her in Sept. 2024, and she sounds just like she does here in 1975.
Whenever I hear this song, I think of something beautiful, but unappreciated.
Unappreciated? This is Collin’s most ever purchased song

Beautiful.
Judy's version is beautiful and simply done. Her voice is ethereal- one of great beauty. Too many clowns tho. But i loved this song.
Beautiful song by Judy Collins.
One of the greatest songs of all time.
The song called send in the clowns by Judy Collins it is a beautiful song in 1975 her voice is incredible

OMG!!! Her voice.

Greatest piece m composed and best version as gylnis tended to talk hers. Imagine a double act breaking up.

this song has got to be about a love...a strong and endearing love...a forgiving love..that maybe is coming to an end
Fantastic
We must laugh occasionally to avoid the tears.
Love this. Now who was best, Frank, or Judy? I just can't call it.

This song makes me feel human.
love it x
I wish someone,,,,,,would send in the clowns.
Listen to Send in the Clowns and think of Robin Williams. You will get it .
You've got to understand imagery and symbolism to better appreciate this incredibly beautiful song.
When I realized where the title phrase originated it physically hurt.
Awesome
that girl can sing even at 83 years old
I think she sings it even better now!

If she can sing that beautifully at 83 she must an angel.
According to the NY Gov, this is us Trumper's theme song! And we're PROUD of it, thank you!
Though this should be BIDEN'S theme!!
super
This is from the muppet show… that’s why there’s those weird clowns in the background
Anybody know if this video is available without the clowns?
Nope ya gotta take the clowns it’s “as is” sorry
Bueatiful
This song seems to be about broken love. Or you arrived and it wasn't there.

A Sad Song especially that Saigon fell that Year 1975
This is The Muppet Show version of this song, in case anyone wanted to know!!
It's not the Muppet show version, she just happened to sing it on the show, don't demean a beautiful song
The clowns were sent into the White House in 2021.
Its the UK government. LOL!
A commentary on our coming election.
It was written for the late great Glynis Johns by stephen the Legend Sondheim.
The clowns in this song are not mean to be represented by actual circus clowns. It is a song about looking back at your life with regret.
There everywhere 😂😂
There is a song!
Belíssima interpretação 👏👏👏
I must be stupid doint understand the record
Gaak!
Bit literal with the clowns in video: Don't bother they're here: (meaning we are the fools)

Having those clowns in the background was a terrible idea - annoyingly distracting.
Yes the song is actually not even about clowns, So serious and poignant.
