First I thought that Scott should watch this but maybe its waste of time since he actually thinks that Venomoth is a fire/dragon type. Fortunatelly you corrected your mistake at the end and well get to see the proper psychic/dragon run later. Thanks for the videos man!
Maybe this is just me, but the pokemon that share the qualities of a type without being the type, like butterfree, venomoth, and Golduck are really cool.
I can agree with that. Still it always makes me wonder how they would perform if they DID get the typings that they logically should have, and thus we test it out.
Funny thing the only Psychic moves Golduck learns are Confusion and Rest in Generation 1. I gets Psychic as an Egg move in Gen 2 and finally is able to learn Psychic as a TM in Gen 4.
@RBYPokemonChallenges Good one. Here's another dad joke. "Sometimes I wrap my arms around my legs and lean forward... 'Cause that's how I roll." I'll see myself out now....

For Zubat to be terrible obviously. I skipped Leech ife on Parasect and Venomoh as a kid because I assumed it was trash from all the Zubats in every cave.
Because Bug was an "early game" type. This was the first game, and they hadn't figured out the formula just yet. Move pools were very shallow, and clearly shaped around the role a particular Pokemon was meant to play in the overall power curve of this specific game. They weren't thinking about making the Pokemon fleshed out enough to use in multiple games, and they weren't thinking about people actually trying to use early game Pokemon into the late game (except the starter obviously). They had to make the games in order to understand how people would play them, and that helped them make the future games better.
Typing isn't the only weird thing with Venomoth. There's a theory that the sprites for Venomoth and Butterfree were switched - they should have been the final evolutions of each other's lines. This is based on the visual designs of the two, which actually make a fairly compelling argument. Venonat and Butterfree both share the 'compound eyes' look while neither Caterpie nor Venomoth have that style - and the pointed head crest of Venomoth looks a lot more similar to Caterpie's 'horn' while Butterfree and Venomoth both instead have the long floppy feeler antennae. Butterfree's legs also look similar to Venonat's. (Presumably this would result in Butterfree instead having Venomoth's stat spread and typing and vice-versa.) Now, it's unlikely we'll ever hear anyone at TPC say that this was the case, and at this point it's an academic discussion because they're not changing 30 years of established connection, but I think it kind of suggests that some of these Pokémon had...less attention put into them than others. Maybe a perception that the Bug type was pretty irrelevant overall and not one that people would care much about (ironic considering bug collecting was one of the inspirations for Pokémon in the first place), so they didn't really think much about the details of Bug-type Pokémon or care much if something got switched around, thinking that it wouldn't be paid much attention to. Except for the late-game rare ones like Scyther and Pinsir, because they very clearly had the most attention put into their design. Anyway...62 resets versus 115 for the OG? I'd say that's a marked improvement. And not like that one would do any better against Aerodactyl.
Yeah there are a lot of design inconsistencies and situations where it seems they retroactively to changed things without a lot of thought. Just wait for Normal-type Rhydon coming soon. Yeah, both were reasonable good. We definitely need Reflect to make Aerodactyl reasonable.
I kinda want to see a challenge where you throw all the modifications into a single file. Psychic Venamoth, max Mewtwo, max Weedle, dragon Aerodayctl, rock Cloyster and the like just to see what that game becomes

VENOM - MOTH venom = poison moth = bug Even though I think it should of been psychic bug...I think the developers realised they found such a good name that they had to make it poison bug
Venomoth as a bug psychic type seems right to me, because it doesn't get that much poison moves in gen 1 other than poison powder. Maybe the developers had to scale it in order for ghost types to be used too(if only the code was doing what it was intended to do) against Sabrina and Koga. Even though it had a rough time without tms against Lance, while Misty and Brock were still major hartals, because you can't get better moves at that point. Butterfree got to have it's own run as psychic bug to see how good it could have been, with one of the best typings in gen 1.
Why didn't psychic count towards used TM in the overlay? Is it because it is in the natural moveset? EDIT: Explained later on that this is indeed the case
Comment before watching, Venomoth is easily one of the coolest gen 1 pokemon. My prediction is making ir psychic will be a slight net positive as it will have more one-shot power and be able to take Sabrina out effortlessly. However it will also suffer from 'smart ai' no longer spamming agility.
As a kid I always thought cloyster was water/ghost, because my dumbass brain thought it was the evolution of gastly lol. To be honest water/dark could be fitting for cloyster, but not suitable for gen1.
Can you change the base power of attacks? If so maybe give attacks like lick, leech life or dragon rage (rare types with terrible attacks in gen 1) some actual competitive punch and see how something like a zubat running the modded move set does.

@@RBYPokemonChallenges wow that makes sense, I played a china bootleg "Pokémon Blew" and each of the Elite 4 had a slightly different Venomoth I was so confused as a kid
I still find funny when a Gen.1 miss happens, is just so stupid (funny enough, another game that is NOT Pokemon Gen.1 that ALSO happens to have the Pokmon Gen.1 miss situation, and is the JPN only Fire Emblem 6 for the GBA) is fun to watch these type of runs as this shows how much fun we can have, ESPECIALLY after beating the game as intended (probably including glitches we CAN use for some stupid stuff like unintended movesets on other pokemons without using a Gameshark with the extended "Mew" glitch for example).
I agree. The glitchiness of the Gen 1 games is part of what makes them interesting. When you consider that in a solo run you are actually attacking a couple hundred times, a Gen 1 miss somewhere in the run is actually pretty common. That being said, losing a fight to a Gen 1 miss and then winning the next attempt when the opponent Gen 1 misses is just ridiculous and hilarious in my opinion and just keeps the game feeling interesting even in fairly trivial fights
@RBYPokemonChallenges how cool would it be if quad types existed! So like how over powered would venemoth with STAB psychic, aeroblast sludge Bomb and mega Horn be? If you hack a rom to have 4 STAB types
Yeah, it also made little sense, but at least it didn't get Psychic as a level-up move at least. Venomoth actually gets a Bug/Psychic level up learnset that just makes me think there's no way it's not this type.

I have an eye condition called keratoconus, basically misshapen corneas. At the degree to which I have it, it's basically no correctable with glasses or contacts and causes extreme near-sightedness and blurring/seeing multiples of things until they all blur together. For example, I see multiples of icons like the indicator that shows the move or item that I've chosen I less I get really close to the monitor or squint really hard at it and since my eyes get really tired if I'm squinting the whole time, I sometimes have errors in move choice, routing etc. So while I am using the term "blind" somewhat casually here, I am referring to the fact that I have an actual condition and it basically is the entire reason why I don't do pure "speedruns" - I'd have so much time loss to minor errors or having to take extra time to check the information due to not seeing the screen well enough that I honestly couldn't compete with the best players.
Hello, i really enjoy your challenges and specially like the way you show information on the sides, its very interesting and i imagine it takes a lot of time and effort, im always looking at that info so i would recommend to have a way to always align the info at the same height, across the video the height of the info moves up and down and its a bit jarring when trying to read it
