I agree. The reason for losing Swift was because Blizzard is needed to get the ranges I need on Rival 5. Without it, that fight is MUCH worse. It's a tradeoff though for sure
So, the whole thing about using pokedoll on the ghost has an actual answer to if it's a glitch or not. I got it on the next attempt easily, and likely should have just gone two Ice Beams there instead (I still went Blizzard because it's 90% accurate and I knew a Critical Hit would OHKO. I wouldn't say the Pokedoll oversight is a glitch. It's an oversight. It's clear that the intent wasn't to allow you to skip Marowak by using a Pokedoll, but they forgot to code an exception for that battle. It's like how being able to dig out of some places in Blue where they forgot to tag them as not being able to dig out of, but they did fix a lot of them in Yellow. Not a glitch, just, they clearly didn't intend for you to do that based on how you can only do those things in the oldest releases. A glitch typically happens when you have an unintended outcome from something that the game is trying to make sense of. A pokedoll ends a battle. That's all it does. It's working as intended, it's just for story purposes, it shouldn't work, and that's why they fixed it in Fire Red/Leaf Green and Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. A glitch would be like Missingno. Not an intentional thing that they programmed in the game, or the "Mew glitch" or various other things that another RUclipsr uses in a video series calling them "secrets" and an actual secret would be something the devs intended but hid well. I highly doubt anyone working on Red and Green and Blue and Yellow was like "alright, we're going to make it so you can open the menu when a trainer from a long distance spots you, then you can teleport away, get into a battle, and encounter a Mew, but if you use Growl several times it can be level 1 Pokemon that you encounter that can have underflowed experience and when the game tries to correct this, it becomes level 100. BRILLIANT!"...
I can certainly understand where you're coming from. However, I would argue that in these cases the Trainer Fly is therefore an exploit and not a glitch. it was simply ab oversight of the developers to consider that pressing start to open the menu and fly/dig/escape rope is working exactly as intended, and it was simply an oversight to not make that work when a trainer spotted you and an oversight not to code an exception for th case of ending a battle when a player escapes in view of a trainer. Same for Badge Boost glitch, it was a mistake in the core that was implemented, but we aren't altering the game and overwriting data somewhere, were simply exploiting an oversight from the devs.
@@RBYPokemonChallenges I'd say glitches can be oversights but not all oversights are glitches. The pokedoll is working as intended as far as Gen 1 is concerned. It ends a wild Pokemon battle. It's clear Gamefreak was aware of the special exception case for Ghost Marowak because you can't catch it. There are a lot of other things that aren't intentional either, like Pokemon that evolve by stones can evolve if that Pokemon levels up, and another Pokemon levels up and learns a move that has a corresponding index number with the item index that would allow it to evolve. Then you have Gen 2 where, the item ID for moon stones from Gen 1 was used for the Moon Ball, but when they changed item indexes, the Gen 2 slot became Burn Heal so Moon Balls better catch Pokemon that evolve with Burn Heal... Not a glitch, just a hilarious oversight. Meanwhile, I'd argue a glitch ends up causing the game to perform unintentional behaviors that the people coding the game didn't anticipate and may not have even known about. I'd be surprised if the team knew about the Badge Boost glitch. They apparently didn't know about the select being able to swap your Pokemon and items in Red and Green but it was patched out of Blue and Yellow. The Fly/Teleport/Dig/Escape Rope work as intended, but, when a trainer battle is initiated and the game simultaneously registers you as being in a battle but also using whatever your method was of escaping, it puts you in a glitched state that leads to other glitched outcomes. As far as Gen 1 goes, I'd argue Mew was a secret (I heard rumors that Mew was snuck in at the last minute, but I don't know why they'd name #150 Mewtwo (it's also Mewtwo in Japanese) without Mew existing, considering all of the other Pokemon that didn't make it off the cutting room floor for gen 1). The Pokedoll is an oversight, they thought about Pokeballs, but didn't think about Pokedolls. And the stuff that happens after intentional behavior and the game trying to make sense of it afterwards is a glitch. Using the pokedoll on Marowak doesn't lead to the game going into a glitched state to my knowledge, it just treats the battle as ending and you get the text that happens as if you made the ghost Marowak faint anyways. That's why I don't call it a glitch, it's an oversight. Using the Pokedoll doesn't lead to any unusual behavior. If using the Pokedoll made your character temporarily able to walk through solid objects or something; I would agree it's a glitch. Clearly when you're walking around the overworld you're meant to be able to open the menu and talk to NPCs, but you're in a glitched state, so you can't. Clearly you're meant to be able to use a Pokedoll to exit battles, and that's all it's doing during the Marowak fight. That's just my final thoughts.
I actually didn't even consider doing this on Red and Blue. There's probably a few more Pokemon who can find ways to cheese right past the bad AI, I imagine.
Hey dude im stuck in my old ways, ive been playing gen 1 and 2 since they were released with exceptions to gen 3 titles when they were released mostly fire red. What i think would be the most ideal scenario is that pokemon release an old style game with old style graphics on mobile, it would be the biggest most popular pokemon game ever released. Anyway back to the question, any hope for me getting into scarlet and violet?

@RBYPokemonChallenges im a big fan of your channel, dont ever change! To make matters worse i just bought a copy of pocket monsters green haha i will be playing that through next. To me though, pokemon yellow version is the best gen 1 game and crystal is the best gen 2 game. I usually teach a pokemon the best moves in crystal then send them to yellow version to train to 100 haha P.s. pokemon yellow has amazing sprites combined with gen 1 mechanics makes for the greatest game of all time 🐐 😏
Do you have a mod to skip wild encounters? I know you can edit those out, so I wanted to ask. I'm pretty sure Diglett Cave would be terrible because repels wouldn't work due to your low level and running would be hard because of Diglett's speed. (If you did, it probably helped reduce RNG differences between the 2 games, making the comparison more accurate)

GIft Eevee in Celadon would let us repel wild encounters other than Dugtrio, greatly reducing the number of the encounters with repels. and if you get a Dugtrio, especially a Level 31 one, then catch it and basically use it to avoid/escape further encounters
Wow,that super minimum battles route was really interesting, maybe it takes a few more setup to make possible, but it was really interesting to see how that route diverge from a standard minimum battles run . That goes to show how amazing Mewtwo's stats are. 😊 Im not sure if onter pokemons can follow Mewtwo's footsteps though.. maybe Hypno can do it with the help of some tms 🤔. Maybe you should make a new tier list for this new route.😂
I don't think the Pokedoll Ghost Marowak skip is a glitch. It doesn't fit most definitions of a glitch. It's an item working exactly as intended, letting you escape from a battle. Programming oversight, maybe, but not a glitch.
This is such a long-time debate. I mean, every glitch is a programming oversight in some way. By the same logic, badge boosting isn't a glitch, because it's working exactly as they programmed it.
Wait wait wait. Badge boost glitch DIDNT activate AFTER the leer from Flareon for special. Is the glitch fixed for Yellow? Leveling up does reset the boosts, but there was NO crits, and Mewtwo was faster, so that 2nd Psychic should have been a GUARANTEED kill in the rival fight before E4.
Every time I see the gym leader intro you have for Blaine I'm left wondering why the anime took away his mustache. He looks like a completely different character without it!
The range on the Sandslash required Blizzard and Blizzard, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic remain useful for the rest of the run. Swift is only really useful for Sabrina, but not necessary to win.
Haven't watched the video yet, just the first two minutes, but trying to predict what the way to reduce battles will be, at first I expected glitches but you said glitchless so my next guess is maybe with traded pokemon? Usually these runs don't use any outside game but that would be a way to reduce battle count without glitches! getting cut early means you can skip the entire nugget bridge section, the boat and going to vermillion altogether (until you need the badge but then you can take another path without battles). Though it still doesn't account for the number of battle you say you're going to skip so maybe it's not that or maybe it's that as well as an additional idea I'm not thinking of. If I'm totally off though I actually think it'd be interesting to have some challenge runs that take into account how you could make the game harder in a legal way through trading.that's pretty unexplored outside of straight up softlocks.
OMG you can transfer items from pokemon stadium?! I did not know that! Cutting the entirety of rock tunnel is huge! I guess combined with the fact you're allowing the pokedoll glitch (seems a bit glitchy to me but ok xD) that accounts for most of the battle skipped now, pretty cool
Yeah, I allowed Pokedoll glitch in this case because speedrunners claim it's not a glitch. I don't really agree either, but it is as simple as an item, so I allowed it. I think the lack of the Game Corner Rare Candy had a big effect on the end
@@RBYPokemonChallenges It's definitely a glitch lol but then again it's gen 1 you can only do "glitch less" and not "glitchless" =p so at some point you have to pick and chose what arbitrary glitch are ok or not
I can see the argument for the pokedoll skip not being a glitch. It's working as it's supposed to, Game Freak just forgot to put in a check for that battle for it to Not work. So oversight, not a glitch lol.
@@mistahl5350 Nah cause you can run away from this battle (in fact you're forced to if you can't identify ghosts) and it doesn't let you skip it. The glitchy behaviour is that it counts as a win instead of fleeing. Also glitches are oversight lol, missingno glitch is mostly due to an oversight of a flag in the game not being updated properly (combined with the fact cinnabar shore tiles actually act like the last grass encounter you had if I recall correctly). Something being a glitch or not is very arbitrary and there is no objective way to decide, it's on a "I know it when I see it" kind of basis, but generally sequence breaks based on unintended behaviours from the game tend to be unambiguously classified as glitches in about every game xD
Agree on that. I always mention in normal runs that the bill section and Mt. Moon give so many levels that even on minimum battles we can outlevel everything and easily win. It's usually not until Koga in Yellow that the game level curve catches up. And if you play like I did as a kid and fight every trainer, say goodbye to any semblance of challenge 😂
Interesting concept, but I can’t really take a glitchless run seriously that includes pokedoll skip. It’s a shame the speedrunning community has somehow made this standardized, though thankfully a lot of popular poketubers are now realizing that skipping a big chunk of the game is obviously a glitch.
I 100% agree with this, which is why it is generally banned in all my runs. I include it here only because 1) it is included in Bulbapedia's list of sequence breaks and 2) it is so widely accepted (even Scott allows it in his speed challenges and 3) it reduces battles further removes a Rare Candy and a PPUp, thereby upping the challenge a bit. I think 2 Rare Candies which this root removes affected the final battle because Level 53 is a damage rounding threshold
not immediately using all of your rare candies in blue at the beginning of the elite 4 feels like a pretty big blunder in a race like this. even tho it didn't change the outcome.
Like I mentioned, this was my first run in Blue on these settings, so I didn't know if I would need them later or not. In hindsight, slamming them makes sense
For sure. There is an entire Bulbapedia article on sequence breaks. I tried to only use the ones that are "accepted" as non-glitches (though I still think Pokedoll is a glitch)
@@RBYPokemonChallenges poke doll thing is definitely a glitch, but seems to be sort of shuffled aside/accepted like the badge boost glitch is, though more for saving tons of time for the poke doll since you don't have to do the rocket hideout if you use that glitch

Let’s find out!

Don't think I've ever been called Mr. Teo-butter 😆
i wonder if mewtwo is the best for this? or is a weaker pokemon in a better experience group better? im hoping mewtwo
This was mostly just about validating the route. Already recorded the next two Pokemon for this
Very cool run. Nice to see the thought process. Gen 1 Mewtwo is so good 😂
Way too strong 😆
Wow,that super minimum battles route was really interesting, maybe it takes a few more setup to make possible, but it was really interesting to see how that route diverge from a standard minimum battles run . That goes to show how amazing Mewtwo's stats are. 😊 Im not sure if onter pokemons can follow Mewtwo's footsteps though.. maybe Hypno can do it with the help of some tms 🤔. Maybe you should make a new tier list for this new route.😂
I think TMs are mandatory on this route, but as long as it can be done without broken TMs I'm happy 😂
@@RBYPokemonChallenges Yeah, this route is really difficult to stick with, without tms ,even with thier help it's really challenging.🤣
yayyy he put it up today
I don't think the Pokedoll Ghost Marowak skip is a glitch. It doesn't fit most definitions of a glitch.
It's an item working exactly as intended, letting you escape from a battle. Programming oversight, maybe, but not a glitch.
This is such a long-time debate. I mean, every glitch is a programming oversight in some way. By the same logic, badge boosting isn't a glitch, because it's working exactly as they programmed it.
@@RBYPokemonChallengesThey didn't intend for it to be reapplied every time your stats are modified.
Meanwhile It takes me 100+ battles just to level up one Pokémon
Level curves in newer games are ridiculous 😂
How are toxic and mimic broken??
Watch the Level 5 Arcanine video....
Before watching prediction is Red and Blue is faster due to Mewtwo being strong enough to handle early game and Yellow having the tougher late game.
Fair assessment
Wait wait wait. Badge boost glitch DIDNT activate AFTER the leer from Flareon for special. Is the glitch fixed for Yellow? Leveling up does reset the boosts, but there was NO crits, and Mewtwo was faster, so that 2nd Psychic should have been a GUARANTEED kill in the rival fight before E4.
Also, I knew Red/Blue would be faster since Jrose literally did this over a year ago without the skips and got UNDER 2 hours in-game time.
No BBG is not changed
Every time I see the gym leader intro you have for Blaine I'm left wondering why the anime took away his mustache. He looks like a completely different character without it!
Yeah, he is literally 2 different characters
I'm gonna bet Mewblue will win
5:06
Why you get rid of swift
The range on the Sandslash required Blizzard and Blizzard, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic remain useful for the rest of the run. Swift is only really useful for Sabrina, but not necessary to win.
Since when does red/blue have so much color? I grew up playing red and blue on an atomic purple gbc and my games never had that much color
I am using a recolor ROM patch
Why does Pokemon blue look so good?
Using the Gen 2 color mod patch on my Blue Roms
@@RBYPokemonChallengesi was about to comment why it looks like gold and sliver
That's exactly it. I think it makes the game look much better. Shout out to Gym Leader Matt who uses the same thing and inspired me
Haven't watched the video yet, just the first two minutes, but trying to predict what the way to reduce battles will be, at first I expected glitches but you said glitchless so my next guess is maybe with traded pokemon?
@@RBYPokemonChallenges It's definitely a glitch lol
but then again it's gen 1 you can only do "glitch less" and not "glitchless" =p so at some point you have to pick and chose what arbitrary glitch are ok or not
I can see the argument for the pokedoll skip not being a glitch.
42:51 when did dragonite look like that
He didn't, but I think that design looks cooler 😂
I dont really understand why they deleted the azuria break but not the ss anne break in firered
The boat was way more interesting than bill
Agree on that. I always mention in normal runs that the bill section and Mt. Moon give so many levels that even on minimum battles we can outlevel everything and easily win. It's usually not until Koga in Yellow that the game level curve catches up. And if you play like I did as a kid and fight every trainer, say goodbye to any semblance of challenge 😂
Go MewBlue!
RBY Pokemon Challenges
Denis! 🔥
That Blizzard at the end was, painful to witness and it only sank in after it happened
Didn't mean too much but ow
Yeah, I should have just Ice Beamed and called it good.
Under the same rules you could have sent over a ton of Rare Candies and gone even faster!
Now that would have been too broken 😂
Probably Red/Blue since Yellow is the HARDER Gen 1 game of the 3.
I guessed red blue, just because of the nasty Magneton + cloyster combo
Both very reasonable assessments
I have mixed feelings about trading and/or transferring items in a challenge run.
I feel you, I only do it in the name of upping the challenge further by eliminating battles to make the game even harder.
Got a little mad at you over that blizzard at the end. I'm glad it didn't make a real difference lol.
For sure. Mistakes and lucky spots are in every run, but I get it!
Where did Bruno go 😳🤔
does he even exist?
3:41 mewblue prob wins imo
I am going to venture a wild guess that you are 100% coreect
34:29 to 34:35 Speaking of optimizations.....
I bet that ledge costed you a minute.
I am so bad at speed running, ledges destroy me 😂
He speeding
Hope Officer Jenny doesn't catch m in Vermillion
not immediately using all of your rare candies in blue at the beginning of the elite 4 feels like a pretty big blunder in a race like this.
even tho it didn't change the outcome.
Like I mentioned, this was my first run in Blue on these settings, so I didn't know if I would need them later or not. In hindsight, slamming them makes sense
wow, very interesting to see you can cut out many battles by using tricks like these
Mellow

Lol, 🤣
Why didn't you use ice beam on Blane. In Gen 1 only I am pretty sure Ice is strong against fire
It's not strong, just normally effective. That being said, it is possible to freeze.
@@RBYPokemonChallenges I wonder if its one of those Mandela effects because I remember using ice beam on Blane as a kid and seeing super effective
@@xRussianbishop Could be. It definitely isn't super effective, but it isn't resisted like in later Gens
It could be the Mandela effect! So if you've ever used Charizard or your rival used Charizard, you might be remembering the super effective message because it's part Flying.
@@El.Bewear This is very possible
