It reminds of me walking in the deciduous forest in spring and I look around the forest and hearing bird chirping

I will never forget hearing Stokowski conduct this (I believe it was 1960 or 1961) with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This prelude floated ever so softly for resonantly off the stage of the Academy of Music, like a beautiful, fragrant fog of sound. Imagine.... this huge and splendid orchestration was Schonberg's first orchestral work!

The listener just floats on the beautiful sunlit ocean of sound here.

@alejandra379 you are quite correct that people do not think that Schoenberg wrote music of this nature. But it already has all the elements of his later, more controversial style. In short, Schoenberg was always Schoenberg, regardless of tonality or the lack of it. If more people grasped this, I think he would be far less controversial and given the accolades he so richly deserves.

@alejandra379 not typical of what people think of when they think schoenberg, but wonderful. Also listen to Verklärte Nacht and for a more typical example of Anrie try Pierot Lunaire.

I much prefer this than the 12 tone stuff. Although it has its place it's just not my thing.

@alejandra379 Check into his response when he got a rousing response when it was premiered......google it....he has moved on to such a different style by the time this premiered.....

Must agree, but for the best performance musically, check out Levine with Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

If you listen to this beginning and compare it with how the work ends you can hear the clear difference in style - it is just as lush but things have become sardonic and sour - listen to the narrators tone when he tells of how the tragic love affair ends - it sound like a Brecth / Weil song but with a massive orchestra - BTW this performance is very poor - to get the full effect of the prelude search for/listen to how the BBC use it in the Ascent of Man pt2.

Horrible grainy sound from EMI. Try Chailly on decca for the Ulitmate in this Mahlerian/Scriabinesque orchestration masterpiece

Gurrelieder like transfigured is still tthe early schonb.Itis radiant music but it offers no help to face the piano concrto or vioin concertoor moses und aaron. Malcolm Mcdonald's book is a great help. I'm amazed Oscar Levant(of all people) sought him out and Sch actually sent him a note to clarify his piano concerto
