Many Finnish immigrants settled there, mixing with the aboriginal Cree and Ojibway people. I remember a Cree elder who told me that he couldn't believe that the Finns were Europeans. "They're exactly like us," he said. "They have the sweat hut (= sauna), when they speak it sounds something like our language, they know how to live in the forest, how to hunt, how to walk in the snow, how to tell stories around the campfire in the proper way. They belong here, like we do. It's strange that they look so pale, though." I'm not a Finn, but when I hear Sibelius, he speaks to me like a brother.

I'm a grown man sitting here on the 6th of December crying more than a few tears listening to this. It's hard to explain. If you're not Finnish, you may think this is a great piece (or not) but for so many of us this might just be the most beatiful piece of music ever written. Not only because of the music itself, but for what it represents to us. Depicting the struggles our people had to experience in the past in order to grow into the blossoming society it is today. Everything about it makes me feel so grateful to have been born and lived in this country. A truly inspiring masterpiece and the only music that has ever had me in tears. Happy independence day everyone.
3:33 the cellos in the background can almost symbolize the low, ominous drone of bombers flying overhead. The dreadful brass makes it so sad. I almost cry playing this in orchestra. I'm a cellist and it almost feels like I'm in a bomber ready to bomb Helsinki. I know the piece was written well before bombers were invented. But its almost foreshadowing.
Because I'm a finn, I can never listen to this without tears coming into my eyes. The music tells the incredible story of Finland. The hard struggles, the fights, how the tough people of Finland went from being a poor country to rich one through hard work etc of every finn, then becoming a free and modern society. It is difficult to tell with words. One needs to be a finn to really get the depth of this masterpiece. This piece represents Finland from the first notes to the last ones. I love my dearest Finland with all my heart and mind and will without a doubt always protect my country against any possible aggressor. It would be my honor to die for my country.
A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area in 1939 are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Finnish soldier is better than ten Russian". The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill where Upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian." Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence. The calm Finnish voice calls out again: "One Finn is better than one thousand Russians" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought.... Then Silence. Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men......it's a trap. There's two of them."

The piece can ,if we leave out anything "political" about it and just think about the natural romanticism, be seen as the "unofficial anthem of the historical finno-estonian cultural region". :) Which meant : Finland+ Estonia+ Livonia (including a part of today's Latvia) + small parts of northern Sweden + small parts of northern Norway (counties FINNmark with much partial finnish-lappish ancestry and a big finnish migration in the 1800s, and under doubt also Troms- where many of the kveenit / kainulaiset /kvæner and the tshud people migrated into from the late medievals and onwards until the 1700s)
I live in finland near small city in country side, surrounded by nature. I haven't seen bears in this neighbourhood (middle finland) but just saw fox the other day. I was smoking pot at the terrace, so it was silent and peaceful moment... that's the position where I have spotted lot's of animals over the years. Pufff! I understand J.R.R Tolkien loved the finnish language, music and nature and used finnish language as inspiration to the elvish language in his books. I feel like the music writers to the movies after Tolkiens work had inspiration from this aswell. A masterpiece.
I believe there were few Finnish musicians who got to add a small piece to the movies, not full composed songs, but things that make scenes dramatic and such. And I'm sure it was solely because of Tolkien's love for Finnish things.

@charlesmartel930 While you may be right in some cases, part of the reason why we broke ourselves out from Russia were the terrible conditions we had under Russian rule. I would perhaps even argue that the hope of better life and restoring proper balance to our society played significant role on our decision of independent Finland. Therefore, it could be said that democracy did play a role in our country's history which invalidates your statement arguing about "never" fighting for democracy.
I love how this song starts. It starts with a dark, descending feel citing back to the awfullness oppression done by the Russian empire to Finland but then the tune changes into hopeful melody, referencing to Finland's independence. Then melody changes into suspicious time interwar period after that again dark when Finland is attacked by the Soviet Union..
Baltijas Vilks there would be no Finland without Russian Empire, because Sweden didn't allow us to even have our own language, an during the time in Russian Empire cities were built, railway from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna was made and Finns could affect in things about them. So I don't think it was awful that Russian Empire came here, cause if they hadn't we would all be speaking only Swedish and be part of Sweden.
I know, you see I'm from Latvia and we we're taught only bad stuff about Russia and USSR and Russian Empire, sadly I've tried to look for a more neutral way to see things. I read how much Russians developed Finland during it's time in the empire. But you have to agree that years 1899-1917 were more of an oppression years than year of advancements.
I knew that stuff already :P I'm a history buff, I live in Hämeenlinna and there's a sign about the railroad built from Hämeenlinna to Helsinki, and from Riihimäki there was a railroad to Saint Petersburg
There's no way Finlandia could reference to Finland's independence since this piece had its premiere in 1900 and the vote for Finland's independence passed in 1917. I myself hear a lot of hope and hopeful tones and melodies in this musical piece as nationalism was greatly on the rise in Finland in the early late 19th century and early 20th century Finland

You have a stunning country, my Finnish brothers and sisters! Just like my own country, it's full of forests, lakes, snow, frost and with one great classical musician (Sibelius, Grieg) which triumphs over all the others. Plus, you freed yourself from your suppressive neighbours too. Best wishes, your Norwegian brothers and sisters
Yeah, sorry, Grieg is a fourth-rate composer, perfectly nice as he is. His compositions are... cute. Nice. Soulful even. Emphatically not a great composer, has absolutely nothing on Sibelius. Grieg has no symphonic ability and his only concerto of substance is a particularly lame imitation of Schumann. Svendsen outperforms Grieg quite handsomely and should be promoted more. Norway is a very cool country and all, but even Alfvén and Gade outrank its classical music output by several orders of magnitude.

But its almost foreshadowing.
this comment is almost just as much of a work of art as the song itself
Vuoden jälkeen♥🇫🇮
Because I'm a finn, I can never listen to this without tears coming into my eyes. The music tells the incredible story of Finland. The hard struggles, the fights, how the tough people of Finland went from being a poor country to rich one through hard work etc of every finn, then becoming a free and modern society. It is difficult to tell with words. One needs to be a finn to really get the depth of this masterpiece. This piece represents Finland from the first notes to the last ones. I love my dearest Finland with all my heart and mind and will without a doubt always protect my country against any possible aggressor. It would be my honor to die for my country.
I identify with you, being Israeli and all.. going through crazy tough times. Great composition.

The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian."
Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences.
After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence.
The calm Finnish voice calls out again:
"One Finn is better than one thousand Russians"
The enraged Russian commander musters
1000 fighters and sends them to the other side
of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades,
rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible
battle is fought.... Then Silence.
Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men......it's a trap. There's two of them."
so great!

even if you have to fight an 80 year war, independence is possible against the biggest of empires.
So : The unofficial anthem of the "Greater Finland". The official anthem of Finland today is Maamme.
And what a year it will turn out to be. Rise Finland!

Protect it, as the population grows, nature recedes.....

Tolkein learned Finnish , he read the book about Kalevala.
I believe there were few Finnish musicians who got to add a small piece to the movies, not full composed songs, but things that make scenes dramatic and such. And I'm sure it was solely because of Tolkien's love for Finnish things.
He used Finnish as an inspiration for Quenya, and Welsh as an inspiration for Sindarin.
The biggest mistake made by Peter Jackson it's to not put Tarja Turunen as female elf in his LOTR movies 😅

Well, the song was written in the year 1900, so it kind of wrong to say that it's about ("citing back to") events that happend many years after that.
I saw and listened to Finlandia being played by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra as the last item on the last night of the 2019 Sibelius Festival in the city of Lahti. An elderly Finnish couple sat next to me held hands ALL the way through this magnificent piece with tears in their eyes. A proud nation full of a proud peoples and a delightful country to visit.
Since I came here Finland gave me a lot of lessons about freedom, about resilience, about being strong in my own proposes and - Finland gave me the love of my life. ♥️
.
Freedom and love... Finnish best things ever.
We love you, Finland.
Respect from a Brazilian girl.
Rayssa Monroy can you make the rest of the Brazilian girls follow you? It might save our country, not enough people born here anymore :’)
Rayssa Monroy try to withstand the winter without snow
jo blo you could but it’d not make any sense. :)
Jean Sibelius wrote this for his fellow Finns, but it cries out on behalf of all people who will stand up for freedom. In all the detailed information above, there's no mention of the orchestra or conductor ~
This arrangement was by Herbert Von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Thank you, Northwest! How did you discover this?
A lot of searching. I figured it was Karajan at first because he conducted Sibelius's pieces slower than other conductors did. Eventually I found this exact same recording on one of Karajan's Sibelius tapes: ruclips.net/video/Q0MVF_32tbk/видео.html
Hope this helps!
Huh, that IS a boost! I'm love that king of big shows!
I'm glad it wasn't just me who felt this was slower than other times I've heard it!

Cheers from Finland! Love Grieg btw.!
Kiitos for answering me :D
Yeah, sorry, Grieg is a fourth-rate composer, perfectly nice as he is. His compositions are... cute. Nice. Soulful even. Emphatically not a great composer, has absolutely nothing on Sibelius. Grieg has no symphonic ability and his only concerto of substance is a particularly lame imitation of Schumann. Svendsen outperforms Grieg quite handsomely and should be promoted more. Norway is a very cool country and all, but even Alfvén and Gade outrank its classical music output by several orders of magnitude.
@@OdiumAestheticum What's your problem, did your dad never praise you?
Make that two! - Rautavaara! Neither of them had Liszt as their teacher though. Greetings from Finland.
Peace. Kyllä Finlandia-hymnistäkin hyvä kansallislaulu tulisi (eikä sitä silloin kuunnella hiljaa koko ajan)
Ja itkee. :)

Long live the Finnish people!
Whoever worked at putting this film to this music was an absolute genius. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I have just posted it on my fb page saying "Fantastic video, never mind the music!"
I would agree very much and I like this but for the message in the music from the heart of a Finn there is a lot here too:

It's just beautifully epic.
Venäjällä on näin hienoa luontoa?
Suomella on kaunis luonto.
@FradTF YT
Minusta Venäjältä löytyy hienompiakin alueita. En edelleenkään keksi, mitä meillä olisi mitä ei muualta löytyisi. Esim. Ruotsissa on enemmän järviä kuin meillä. Silti tykkään Suomen luonnosta paljon. Se on kiva kokonaisuus.

Part of the reason I came to live in Finland in 1969 was the depth of feeling and history that Finlandia conveys and I still shed a tear or two when I hear it. I am very proud and thankful to have become a Finn.
Brian Forder proud to have you here, buddy!
Thank you sir. Tervetuloa veli.
You can't "become a finn" you either are one or aren't, you are born into it.
@@kookoo9235 well anyone can become a Finn if they integrate themselves to finnish Culture, religion and society even if they weren't born in Finland (kinda how europeans immigrants integrated themselfs to america). However nowdays most immigrants don't speak finnish sadly or be part of its culture or society (and I mean immigrants from all continents , not just africans or arabs)

105 years of Independence today Finland. Thank you Lotta Svärd and the Veterans who made it possible.
My father died just before Christmas 2020 and this was his choice of music as an introduction piece to his funeral in January (UK). Due to the Covid-19 lock-downs around the world we were unable to attend his funeral (living in Norway, Australia and London, UK), however we were able to listen to this wonderful music and watch this beautiful video recording in absentia, remembering so many wonderful memories with him. Thinking of everyone who has lost a loved one at this time. Lets hope that they have gone to a better place❤️
This is one of my favourite classical songs, I have listened to it almost daily ever since I heard it. Absolutely wonderful. Greetings from Canada! :)
In this music you can hear history of Finland. This has it all. Happy independence Day, 2021.
Beautiful composition. It made me feel proud to be Finnish even though I'm an American who has never been to Finland and has no Finnish ancestry at all. I will pay a visit to Finland someday, it seems like a pretty nice place.

Amazing country, love Finland, greetings from El Salvador.
This was my mother's favorite hymn. She was born in what is now Oklahoma, but in 1905 is was Indian Territory. I was born when it became the Christian Hymn called "Be Still my Soul" in 1941. I still get tears in my eyes every time I hear it, as now. The last time I heard it was when it was played at her funeral.
I knew it in my school choir as "We Rest On Thee". I was most touched when I saw a Navy choir singing on deck of a ship that was due to deploy to Viet Nam.
I know and love the tune as this hymn:
This Is My Song by Lloyd Stone and Georgia Harkness
This is my song, O God of all the nations,
a song of peace for lands afar and mine;
this is my home, the country where my heart is;
here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine:
but other hearts in other lands are beating
with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean,
and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
but other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
and skies are everywhere as blue as mine:
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
a song of peace for their land and for mine.
May truth and freedom come to every nation;
may peace abound where strife has raged so long;
that each may seek to love and build together,
a world united, righting every wrong;
a world united in its love for freedom,
proclaiming peace together in one song.*
This and Ravels Bolero is how I came in to classical music back in -67. Beautiful and powerful, love to my brothers and sisters in Finland.
Now that you mention Bolero, I understand that it talks to me too like that, a close cousin in a way to Finlandia
