So much emotion and beauty in this music and this performance. I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate this as they are missing something extraordinary.
So few groups can perform works of the second Viennese as well as the Berg Quartet. This performance is spot on with the score without forgetting the essential. Amazing. And thank you for the upload.
I'm old enough to remember when Beethoven's late quartets were still described as "difficult". They're now definitely in the mainsteam and manifestly accessible regardless of how they are heard and interpreted. Same, I reckon for Webern, late night BBC 3, proves it if nothing else. Its good music that calls to the emotions and intellect. No more, no less.
I had the pleasure of seeing this performed live by the Ariana Quartet at Madeline Island Chamber Music for Strings. Truly incredible to listen to and even more amazing to see performed!
@Schizopantheist I agree. I had much the same experience as you. Although I didn't fully understand the music at first, its sheer beauty made me want to get to know it better. Now it's one of my favourite pieces of quartet music.
definitely staggering performance. I would suggest two more recordings might be of interest for similar reasons: Berg's Lyric Suite (La Salle), and the obscure "Verdigo" performed by La Scala String Quartet (memorably inspiring playing)
This recording is fantastic! Any more information about it? It is these 5 pieces (with not a note out of place) that turned me into a lover of Webern, and having ranged over the rest of his output i still return to them often. I think this is his masterpiece and a highpoint of 20th century western culture.

My god webern was so highly strung during this period..The breakdown wasn't far off..Brilliant music..Ahh!!!!!!! Expressionism at its most extreme.
Great piece. Gives me goosebumps!!
Maravillosa música. De lo mejor en la compacta producción musical de Webern
