Those are the bare minimum times required for an on-time departure. Being 5 (or 10?) minutes late for the bare minimum cutoff is not something an exception can be made for. It means he was really a lot more late than he thinks, considering the recommendations for arriving at the airport early.

The reason they can't let you check your bag after the cutoff is because it takes time to go through the screening process and the automatic sorting system. If they take a late bag, then the airline is responsible to wait for it to get on the flight which could lead to a costly delay.

While employees shouldn't have been rude, I'd imagine the reason they were short with you is because you were late and acted like it was their fault for then being unable to check in your bags. All airlines have cutoff times. The 45 minute prior checkin rule is posted online. It's so your bags can have time to go through security and get put on your plane so that way you're not angry at the bag claim as well. Secondly, you wound up getting your tickets reissued with American later anyway, which is something you could have done at the original counter before you walked off to try the other airlines. Earlier this month I was stuck on standby in DFW myself from 10am until 6pm. It was upsetting but I wasn't rude to employees who had nothing to do with it and just asked to be rolled over until I got on a flight that went. DFW is a huge airport to explore with lots of good bars and restaurants to vlog about. You missed an opportunity.

The trick is to be at the airport at least two hours before your flight. That gives you adequate time to make sure you're checked in, have your bags checked, and to go through security. After that, you don't have to worry too much, just relax and get some food or something instead of rushing to get to your plane. It works out nicely if you're there early.

I flew round trip from SMF to JFK. Go to print boarding passes and 5 min into the 24 hrs before and we get group 9! How does that work?? They offer us upgrades for $$ (pick a seat check bag etc) so I picked 2 seats across the aisle from each other. Get there and they took our carryons saying group 9 cannot have them! Seats coming and going were impossibly small and close together. I could not reach my purse or fold my tray down (not that they served food). Horribly uncomfortable! Baggage fees! Seat picking fees! Back still hurting 5 days later from being jammed into that tiny space. I flew United in December and couldn't have been more pleased with service and employees help.

There may be a line at the ticket counter, an even longer line at the (government-run) TSA security check point, a long walk to the gate sometimes, not to mention other unexpected delays in traffic on the roads etc. Far too many entitled people make no effort to be early - or even on time - because the world revolves around them. Hopefully this young man will realize sooner than later that it does not. We are all of equal importance, and no one person’s schedule is more important than anyone else’s.

I love like you're late for check-in and then blame everyone for your fault. Lucky you have your mummy to sort things for you out.
The trick is to be at the airport at least two hours before your flight. That gives you adequate time to make sure you're checked in, have your bags checked, and to go through security. After that, you don't have to worry too much, just relax and get some food or something instead of rushing to get to your plane. It works out nicely if you're there early.

Dude, you were late for the flight. You can't blame AA. You can tell this guy doesn't really know what he's talking about when he says "United is the best airline." You just cant call one airline good or bad because of a mistake that you made. One day you might have a great experience with an airline and the next day you might have a terrible experience. The problem with US carriers is that they are so big and it's really luck of the draw for if you have a good flight or bad depending on the few staff of thousands that you interact with in the airline.

I flew round trip from SMF to JFK. Go to print boarding passes and 5 min into the 24 hrs before and we get group 9! How does that work?? They offer us upgrades for $$ (pick a seat check bag etc) so I picked 2 seats across the aisle from each other. Get there and they took our carryons saying group 9 cannot have them! Seats coming and going were impossibly small and close together. I could not reach my purse or fold my tray down (not that they served food). Horribly uncomfortable! Baggage fees! Seat picking fees! Back still hurting 5 days later from being jammed into that tiny space. I flew United in December and couldn't have been more pleased with service and employees help.
