Cool. We will try and do more of them. It’s so much fun learning from people as we travel and we are so grateful that Mata Iki was willing to give up so much of his time to teach us too. Thanks for hanging out and for taking the time to drop us a message here too.
What a delightful fella, to share his knowledge so freely. I was left thinking that it must be a pretty safe community to live in. I mean, your next three years income is just hanging on a float out there for the taking.
He was such a nice guy. Hope we get to meet him again some day. It really is amazing how safe we have felt in so many of these remote places. We did hear that there was some issues with theft when Pearl farming collapsed back in the day and there was a good bit of stollen pearls moving around but for the honest guys out there, they work tirelessly to bring in an income. Such respect for them all.
I think we were most definitely the pupils in this episode. Learnt so much from Mata Iki and so grateful he was willing to spend the whole day with us sharing his experience. Now we just have to work out what to do with these treasures.
Yeah, the odd shaped ones just have so much personality to them. We just couldn’t believe the depth of colours in each of these pearls. So hard to show in video but hypnotising for sure.
It was an eye opening experience for sure. The detail and skill that goes into positioning the nucleus was great to see. French Polynesian is known for their care in making sure the oyster lives for many years. In some parts of the world, they kill the oyster as part of the harvesting which is a shame. As you saw, there are accidents and disease that can cause that but for the most part Mata Uki worked to ensure the oyster wasn’t damaged/hurt during the whole process
@@RedSeas Just very informative! I knew that pearls came from oysters but your whole explanation about the strings, cages etc was very good. Of course both of you with your infectious laughter and how you go about everything helps. Actual sailing topics also appreciated. IMO lots of the You Tubers are not great sailors with a few exceptions like Better Together, Barefoot Doctors, and Colin. But they become better sailors while going around the world.
This is super helpful. Thank you. Hopefully we fall on the right side of the sailor status. We don’t often show the details of passages, mainly because we kind of do things automatically a lot of the time, but we keep trying to find ways to share more of our adventure and sailing is obviously a huge part of it. If you ever want more details on a particular aspect of sailing, just drop us a line and we can make sure to include it in a future episode too. Cheers!
@@RedSeas Well, I know how hard it is to get content. I did a crossing in May from Bahamas to Panama on a 42ft Cat and decided to film some of it! Super fail! I managed about a 2 minutes of useful footage and decided it was useless to me and anyone else! 😁 Keep up the good work!
That was so interesting and I am so happy you managed to buy a couple…proud you were restrained….he would have had to employ me for my debt to be repaid….lol
😂 he was pretty surprised that we wanted to buy any to be honest. We had to convince him to let us. Super cool to have the pearls we harvested as keep sakes too. If you like, we can put in a good word for you with the boss 😃
It was so cool to learn the whole process and we are so grateful to mata iki for letting us have a go too. Learnt so much that’s day and hope to get back there sometime to see how he is getting on.
It was fascinating to try our hand at the process. Certainly, the farmers are working very hard to harvest these precious stones. Wild how expensive they can be.

Great episode watched with a smile thanks
Yay! Thank you. So happy we were able to share this little adventure with you. And even better that it put a smile on your face. 😃

A talented teacher plus your french is very good ! 😅 both of you that's great. This video is awesome ❤ the souvenirs from there... I'm almost jealous😂

I like the odd shaped Pearls. The necklace chains are to me mesmerizing. 👍 🙂
Fascinating 🤗

What an interesting video. The most I knew about pearl farming was they stuck something in an oysters mouth and hoped for a pearl.

Always great to see where stuff actually comes from.. not just Amazon.
Donate for a Dream
It’s wild to think these little stones spend years growing in the shallows
Great episode! Very interesting and IMO one of your best videos for a long time.
Cheers! We have been having a lot of fun with episodes recently. Would love to know what it was that appealed to you over our other episodes.

That was really really interesting
And one your best
Cheers. It was fun learning so much from Mata Iki
Thank you.
You're welcome! Cheers for hanging out with us again.
So informative - thank you
Thanks. I’m pleased you enjoyed it. We loved learning the whorl process and getting a better understanding of what makes these pearls so special.
Great episode,,,, very informative on the process. Always a fun Sunday with Red Seas,,,, Thanks,,,
Cheers! Thanks for hanging out with us and dropping a message here too
Millionaires this time next year
Absolutely. Rich beyond our wildest dreams already

😎🌏 Thats the first time ive ever seen that process. 🧙🏻♂️
Us too! Crazy isn’t it?
Great video guys! Did a little farming back in the day but ended up burning the product inside thin paper! Lol
We all make our millions somewhere 😂 I’m sure it was just as enjoyable. 😊
@RedSeas haha never made any money at it but it was enjoyable!
Certain it was pretty stress free too 😂
Super interesting guys!! What an amazing process. Thanks for sharing! I like the wonky ones too haha :)

@@RedSeas such a special experience!! That would be so cool
A very interesting video.
Wow black pearls go from anywhere between €75 up to €1500+ a piece, although I doubt the actual farmers get those prices.
It was fascinating to try our hand at the process. Certainly, the farmers are working very hard to harvest these precious stones. Wild how expensive they can be.
Awwee we'd get our mail done and Pinky's would get hoops
#90’s kid
Great episode. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
You can’t take Iain anywhere. What do they say again? ‘You break it you buy it’. 🤣😂
That was the concern. Don’t know the going rate for a 1 year old oyster. 😥
@@RedSeas Probably two Nanny engines....lol, that or a years worth of labour...lol
Iain was interment with that oyster 😂, he implanted it and became a father.
We got very close during the procedure. Should we be worried lol
@@RedSeas only if the oyster comes back for child support. LOL.
11k wooooo hoooo soon you’ll be at 20k
We are on a bit of a roll. No idea if we will ever make it to 20k but wouldn’t that be amazing?!?
😂 thanks guys..
A traumatising experience for all involved but hey, we all learnt something today 😂
Idea , just hang a few oysters under the boat and harvest every year. In 20 years you got a 10k profit… 🤓
You joke, we came away honestly questioning if that should be a retirement plan lol
😛
😜
Iain = Perl-daddy ....... Bri = Perlmutter
Are we going to get a RED pearl?
❤ from 🇨🇦 BC
Red Sea Pearls 😎
Do we need to set up a new product in the merch store? 😂
You can’t take Iain anywhere. What do they say again? ‘You break it you buy it’. 🤣😂
Exactly
